Postseason History

KU’s first taste of the postseason came under Francis in 2000, when the Jayhawks qualified for the Big 12 Championship as the No. 8 seed and faced top seeded Nebraska. Despite holding the third-ranked Huskers scoreless in the first half, KU fell 4-0. The following season, the Jayhawks earned another trip to the Big 12 Championship, this time as the No. 4 seed, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. However, KU was eliminated in the first round of the tourney by BYU, 1-0. It wasn’t until 2003 that KU earned its first postseason victory. After posting a 6-3-1 Big 12 record during the regular season, the Jayhawks earned the No. 3 seed in the conference tourney and downed sixth-seeded Oklahoma, 1-0, in the opening round. Freshman Jessica Kilpatrick and sophomore Caroline Smith connected for the only goal of the match. The Jayhawks earned their second NCAA Tournament bid in 2003, after a 15-4-1 regular season. KU traveled to Columbia, Mo., for the first round of the tourney and came away with a pair of victories. KU dispatched of Illinois State, 3-1, in the first round on a pair of goals from Kilpatrick. The ‘Hawks then knocked off archrival Missouri, 2-0, to advance to the round of 16. Smith and senior Carmel Kaplinger scored the KU goals, while Meghan Miller made four saves to earn her 11th shutout of the season. The Jayhawks fell to national No. 2 seed UCLA in the round of 16, but enjoyed their deepest run in the national tournament. The following year, KU won the Big 12 regular season title and scored a postseason record four goals in its opening round triumph over Iowa State. In the conference quarterfinals, KU led fourth-seeded Texas 2-0, but eventually fell in double-overtime, 3-2. The 2004 NCAA Tournament brought another first to the KU program, as the Jayhawk Soccer Complex was selected to host first and second round contests for the first time. The Jayhawks defeated Creighton, 3-1, in the first round on goals by Afton Sauer, Jessica Smith and Monica Brothers. However, KU experienced more heartbreak in the second round. The Jayhawks outshot visiting Nebraska 17-1 in the second half, but could only manage a single goal, falling 2-1 in overtime. The 2006 season saw another first in Jayhawk postseason play as KU’s Big 12 Championship first-round match with Colorado came down to penalty kicks. The teams played through 90 minutes of regulation and two overtime periods tied 1-1. Kansas returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2008, posting a 2-1 victory over Denver in the first round in Palo Alto, Calif. Junior Shannon McCabe tallied the game-winning goal just seconds before the end of the first half – her third of the postseason. The Jayhawks eventually fell to topseeded Stanford in the second-round of the tournament to end its season at 13-8-2. Just getting back to the national tourney took a strong run at the Big 12 Championship. The Jayhawks were the No. 7 seed in the conference tournament, but upset second-seeded Texas A&M, 4-2, in the quarterfinal round. Monica Dolinsky set a KU postseason record with three assists against the Aggies, while McCabe recorded a pair of goals. KU was eliminated from the Big 12 Championship on penalty kicks in the semifinals by Missouri, the eventual tournament champion.
