John Alan Zirkelbach started at Kansas Athletics in July, 2002 and serves as a staff athletic trainer. His main responsibility is head athletic trainer for women’s soccer and softball, while also serving as aquatic rehabilitation center supervisor and sports medicine IT coordinator.

At KU he has worked as a trainer for the track and field teams (2002-03) and as an adjust instructor in the school of education for the Health, Sport and Exercise Science Department’s athletic training education program. He has also served as a volunteer for the Ironman 70.3 Kansas triathlon as the local medical coordinator for the last four years. Zirkelbach was born in Monticello, Iowa and attended Johnston High School in Johnston, Iowa where he played baseball, golf and football. He graduated from Iowa

State in 1999 and earned a Master’s from Oklahoma in 2002. While at Iowa State, Zirkelbach worked as a student athletic trainer for the football, cross country and track and field teams. After graduation he spent one year as an assistant athletic trainer at Notre Dame (1999-2000) and two years at Oklahoma (2000-02). Zirkelbach enjoys cooking, personal nutrition, training for triathlons and half-and full-marathons in the off-season. He is also a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and Kansas Athletic Trainer Society.
