hanks to your continued support of your KU Alumni Association this past year, the Association set new records in terms of communications, programs and attendance at events worldwide!
It’s no secret to us Jayhawks that alumni and friends of KU are recognized as among the most generous and loyal in higher education. Since 1883, alumni voices and active participation through the KU Alumni Association—an independent nonprofit organization governed by alumni and friends—have propelled KU far beyond the ranks of ordinary Midwestern universities to become recognized by every standard not only as the flagship university in our state, but also one of the nation’s premier public institutions for higher learning. Donors and members of the Association wield the power of influence, and when 43,000 voices unite for the good of KU, great things happen. You represent the human capital to protect and increase the value of the KU degree—often by simply renewing your membership or increasing your support to the Association. Corbett and Briley As you help the Association recruit students, host events in your area, advocate for KU in the Kansas Legislature, and mentor current students, you make a significant difference. To help the University build on its prominence, we must expand our Jayhawk network exponentially in the years to come. Year in Review The Alumni Association provides programs and services to engage and mobilize students and alumni, who are the most vital resources for a greater KU. The following highlights of the year are only possible with the support of our members. Everything we do strengthens KU.
Legacy Scholarships Grow Legacy Scholarships The Jayhawk Generations Scholarship is a true testament to the work of alumni. Initially a two-year program, the scholarship became permanent in 2011 and benefits out-of-state legacy students. Thanks to the Association’s advocacy, the value of these awards tripled to a maximum of $46,700 over four years ($11,675 per year). Improved scholarship access The Association helped revamp KU scholarships, increasing the amounts and making it easier to apply, a benefit for all students.
Members make the difference! 3
Jayhawks for Higher Education Advocates promoted key achievements, including: • continued funding to advance KU’s effort to achieve National Cancer Institute designation • the new BEST building at the Edwards Campus and the Clinical Research Center in Fairway, part of the Johnson County Education and Research Triangle • Alumni support and legislative advocacy were vital to voters’ approval of the historical Triangle initiative.

More than 500 events were held during fiscal year 2012 with member support and the help of 1,800 volunteers.
’Hawk Days of Summer

The Association staged ’Hawk Days of Summer, an ambitious program that connected staff members with Jayhawks in all kinds of settings. A 12-member team covered 143 events that spanned 83,865 miles in 90 days and welcomed 8,285 alumni. Staff on the home team dispatched online chronicles of events through social media, video and photos from the road.

Kansas Billboards 20 billboards are in place, and two in Garden City have been renewed.
Kansas Honors Program For 41 years, KHP has reached out to high school seniors across the state. Highlights include: • 3,520 new KHP scholars • 8,000 participants in 42 events Musical Theatre for Kansas
• 357 alumni represented the University
Wichita Chapter Kansas Chapters Eighty percent of the Association’s events highlight academic and student activities. The newest addition is “Musical Theatre for Kansas.” The theatre department, partnering with the Association, created a seven-student troupe to bring four performances to Kansas this spring. The troupe performed the revue “Boy Meets Girl” in Topeka, Pittsburg, Liberal and Colby.

Wichita is home to the nation’s second largest KU community. The Wichita Chapter hosts more than 30 events a year.
Jayhawk Roundup The Jayhawk Roundup in Wichita draws nearly 500 alumni and friends for an evening of casual fun.
Kansas City Chapter More than 88,000 Jayhawks live in Kansas City, the nation’s largest KU community. The KC chapter hosts 25 events a year.
We Are Kansas City Campaign After Mizzou’s secession from the Big 12, the Association worked with the University to highlight KU’s commitment to KC. Increased efforts included: KC Jayhawk Open Golf Tournament

Rock Chalk Ball
Rock Chalk Ball Celebrating its 17th year, the Kansas City Chapter event helps fund the Association’s many efforts to strengthen KU. This year’s gala featured a garden theme, a spirited crowd and strong fundraising. Alumni artists contributed unique birdhouses for the silent auction.
Homecoming The Alumni Association sponsors KU Homecoming, serving as advisers and mentors to the student committee as well as providing other resources. Week-long events include art contests and fundraising to benefit the United Way, culminating in the Homecoming parade and game-day festivities.
The event raised a record $147,189.
National Chapters and Across the Globe National and international chapters promote and strengthen ties between KU and its alumni and friends living around the world. Highlights include: • 217 academic and social events were held in 54 cities, and 33 events in support of athletics were held in 16 cities. • Across the globe, the Association connected with Jayhawks in 15 world locations.

Adams Alumni Center The Adams Alumni Center welcomes more than 35,000 people at more than 800 events each year. The events are hosted by the Association, University departments or individual Association members.
Alumni Records The Association maintains records on more than 315,000 alumni and friends in a database of 518,000 records. The Association produced a new Alumni Directory. The last edition was published in 2006.
Gold Medal Weekend
Alumni Reunions Jayhawks gather on campus to reunite and reconnect with classmates. Winter events included the KU Band Reunion and the National Board of Directors Reunion. National Board of Directors Reunion The Association invited former national board members back to reconnect on the Hill.
The 2012 directory is the largest to date. The records staff updated 33,000 records as part of the project and added 7,400 email addresses, bringing our total email addresses to more than 130,000.
A Year of Giving, Donor Support The Presidents Club has grown to 325 members. FAR ABOVE Campaign commitments to the Alumni Association are $1.44 million, plus $1.46 million in deferred giving.
Gold Medal Weekend The Gold Medal Club and the Class of ’62 enjoyed reunion festivities on the Hill.
CASE Awards Association publications won three gold medals and four bronze for the ’Hawk Days website, Kansas Alumni magazine and the calendar.

Student Programs Student programs remain strong, with more than 1,200 members. Student Alumni Leadership Board The SALB works to engage students and prepare them to serve as advocates for KU. Lawrence March Madness celebration
March Madness The women’s basketball team made the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2000, and scored tourney upsets before falling in the Sweet 16 to Tennessee. Buoyed by the thrilling end to our rivalry with Missouri, the men’s team battled through postseason with five NCAA Tournament victories. The Jayhawk Nation rallied at the Association’s pregame parties. KU blue filled the streets of St. Louis and New Orleans.

In Lawrence, fans crowded Mass Street after KU defeated North Carolina to make the Final Four and Ohio State to compete for the NCAA National Championship KU’s championship dreams ended with a loss to Kentucky. Kansas Alumni Sports Watch Mobile App The first mobile app was launched in March and received more than 4,500 downloads. Content will be updated for the fall.

During the University’s 11th Commencement, a small group of alumni founded the KU Alumni Association with “the purpose of forming a closer bond among ourselves.” The Association has been maintaining KU’s records and bringing alumni together ever since. on and Kay Brada never miss an opportunity to recruit Alumni Association members. During a recent trip to Washington, D.C., they met a young graduate who works for U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins. “He was so excited to see people from Lawrence, so Don asked him if he was an Association member,” Kay recalls. “He said he wasn’t, and we said he should be. He’ll be hearing from us.” In addition to their support for many areas of KU, the Bradas have established a $100,000 programs endowment for the Association. “You need to stay in touch with your friends, and you need to stay in touch with your school,” says Kay, c’61. “Someone helped you, and you need to do the same.” As Life Members since their graduation, they continue their annual support for the Association as members of the Presidents Club “because it was the natural next step for us,” she says. “An annual contribution reminds you of your connection.” They have volunteered for KU in Hutchinson, Wichita and now Lawrence, where they moved after Don, c’61, m’65, a psychiatrist, retired as associate dean and professor at the School of Medicine- Wichita. Both won the Mildred Clodfelter Award for local volunteer service in 1990. Kay served on the Association’s national Board of Directors in the 1980s; Don began his term on the Board in July. As a two-time graduate and former faculty member, Don especially appreciates the Association’s commitment to represent the breadth of the University’s academic programs. “The way many people know about KU is the football and basketball teams,” he says, “ but the Alumni Association is the principal

alternative to communicate to people what is going on at the University. It’s important to get a view beyond athletics.” But the KU basketball and football keepsakes that adorn their basement attest to the Bradas’ passion for KU athletics. This fall they traveled to the KU-Northern Illinois football game and attended the Association’s tailgate. “It was wonderful to see what the Association pulled off,” Kay says. “We had 500 alumni in a tent, and people took notice. I’m sure the president of UNI took notice, because his tent was next to ours and he had only 50 people.” 17

W
hen the Alumni Association and the University in 2009 launched the Jayhawk Generations Scholarship for out-of-state legacy students from KU families, Kyle Vann, e’69, was among those applauding the move. Student recruitment has long been among his top priorities as a KU volunteer in The Woodlands, Texas, where he is now retired from a career that included 25 years as an executive with Koch Industries. O
n a Wednesday afternoon, hours before the KU volleyball team’s match, Catherine Holland is already on campus, dressed in her crimson and blue, including her socks and sparkling bracelets. “Aren’t you coming to the game?” she asks. “We play K-State!” Holland, c’65, d’71, celebrates more game days than the average loyal Jayhawk. She attends KU contests in volleyball, soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, football and tennis whenever she can—while dividing time between Topeka and her hometown of Russell. So it’s only fitting that she has created a $100,000 Game Day Endowment for the Alumni Association’s events at home and away games. Raised on KU traditions by her parents, Herbert, l’30, and Helen Shaffer Holland, c’29, she followed their examples and became a Life Member when she earned her bachelor’s degree in physical therapy. Her late brother, Michael, c’62, l’65, played football for the Jayhawks. “We’ve always had a connection to KU,” she explains. “It’s part of our family.” To strengthen KU connections, she has purchased Association memberships for her extended family and many friends. Her friend LoEtta Waters, h’78, of

Topeka, first met Holland in 1977 and has attended countless KU games with her through the years. “Once you’re a friend of Cathy’s, she keeps in touch,” Waters says. “If she travels to away games, she makes sure she sees friends and asks them to go to the games with her. She’s very generous.”
