Project summary /

URBAN ZONE

THE PROJECT DISTRICT 8

RURAL ZONE

The project is called “bụi đời”, or “dust of life”, and refers to “migrant homeless children”. There is a high population of migrant homeless children in the city, but there is no true law enforcement from the government. Many have become victims of homelessness, labor exploitation, and other deceptive practices. Their voices are unheard, and their rights are forgotten. The children are invisible under the eye of the legal system, education, and the general society. Therefore, the project focuses on children’s rights in Vietnam, particularly those of migrant working children in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The proposal is developed upon three pillars: law enforcement of children’s rights and protection, support of education, and a safe space for children of vulnerable circumstances.

These three pillars are transformed into a system consisting of a juvenile courthouse, a public library, and a child advocacy center. Aiming to translate this institutional concept into a less intimidating and traumatizing space for children, the facilities are located in District 8 of the city. The district is between two general areas: rich and poor, as well as urban and rural. The project now becomes a bridge to mitigate the economic gap and provides resources to those who have limited access to education and legal protection. Besides, the facilities become sculptural paths and unexpected playgrounds, immerging between a park with sounds of rural Vietnam. The courthouse, the public library, and the child advocacy center could be occupied in many ways: on top, underneath, and between.

Adaptive-Reuse | natatorium + recycling center Manhattan, New York

Project summary /

anima: ‘to breath’ [latin] The project is the synthesis of three main programs (natatorium, incinerator, and recycling center), and the integration with the existing UPS facility. This is created with three main intentions: urban context and site accessibility, a climatic response in the formal language, and ambiguity of the three programs. Firstly, the urban context & site access were taken into consideration. The project is located on a long and narrow site with an existing UPS facility. While this facility serves as a vital function for the city, the building itself appears to be uninviting. The reason is that this facility runs along with the entire site with access points solely on the extremities. - With the idea of providing more pedestrian circulation through the site and creating public spaces for the community, the middle portion of the UPS building is demolished. However, the existing column grids remain. Some are used for the newly built structure. Some are left free-standing to become a colonnade public garden. A public skate park is also designed based on the grid. - The pedestrian and vehicle circulations are rerouted without overlapping.

Secondly, The project’s formality is a response to the climate of the site. The shorter edge of the site is in the South. With a limited amount of direct sunlight, the project aims to create light refraction moments through its sculpture form. 3 main light wells are designed for this purpose. - One is tilted toward the South, gaining direct sunlight for an active space use through the built atriums - One is facing North, getting a dimmer atmosphere for more leisure and relaxing space - The smallest one acts as an exhaust/administrative space for the incinerator and its users. Thirdly, the seamless interactions of interior spaces are expressed through the development of an ambiguous formality. The intent is to fade the stereotypical boundary between an actively used community space and an industrialized neighborhood. There are overlapping moments between the three programs, which created a sense of awareness of these typically hidden programs.

Project summary /

existing site The project, a proposal for a high-density tower with a vertical park, is designed with the idea of introversion. The building is an introvert of itself and of its surrounding while introducing a new condition of public space and creating a new housing typology. Contextually, the project holds three edges of the site, while still maintaining shortcuts through out the block. The three edges are where the cores supporting the three main programs: retail, housing, and offices.

To maintain privacy for the main residents, retail and office entries are separated. Being an introverted building, all units are facing inward. The gesture allows a new typology of spatial and volume distribution. The upper portion of offices is more open, allowing opportunities for sunken courtyards to bringing greeneries. The exterior of the project facing to the city remains modular with a rigid grid of apertures. The surface is composed of smooth green-tinted aluminum panels. The exterior of the project facing inward itself offers a canyon-like park experience that alludes to the geological composition of New York City and offers opportunities for juxtaposing sports. When the two languages meet, shared semi-private spaces are formed.

Project summary /

Firm: O'Neil Langan Architects Supervisor: Rachel Duong The project is located in an existing shopping village, The Forum in Carlsbad, California. The new tenant is Lululemon Athletica, an athelic apparel retailer. The scope of work includes the alteration to existing building for interior tenant fit-out and new tenant storefront to match with Lululemon's aesthetics.

Responsibilities: - Worked on the project from DD to close-out phases - Directly consulted with client, GC and structure/MEP consultants - Due diligence for city and state codes - Prepared and completed narrative, drawing documents and renderings for internal reviews, permit submittal, and as-built set - Heavily involved in interior wood millwork design and detailing at storefront, cash area, and community wall

Inspired by Lululemon's concept, "mediocrity to greatness", the design is also dedicated to bring a fresh and innovative branding through the uses of new finishes, interactive fixtures and effective FOH and BOH layouts.

Project summary /

Firm: Ware Malcomb Supervisor: Jeff McCue The project is located in a shopping center in Williamsville, Buffalo. The scope of this project involves the North and East Elevations are to demolish the existing walls and glazing at the retail area. The two exterior walls of the sales floor are to be infilled with storefront glazing, where structurally feasible. All work will be within the existing building footprint. The proposed renovation will not increase the existing building's height or area.

Franchise Restaurant | Ground up Construction Weslaco, Texas

Project summary /

Indoor Dining conceptual rendering Firm: David Ports Architect Inc. Supervisor: David Ports, Rich Mahoney Bar-B-Cutie is an established 3,000 SQF fast-casual restaurant chain with both corporate and franchised locations. DPA has provided ongoing services for Bar-B-Cutie since 2004. At this Weslaco location in Texas, the project is a mirrored prototype of their previously built restaurant in San Antonio. The restaurant provides both semi-outdoor and indoor dining. The most important key is to ensure the indoor air quality of dining areas. We locate the smoker room far away from the dining area, but close to the main kitchen and its related support areas, and staff offices.

Responsibilities: - Refined and implemented Bar-BCutie existing brand design package; - Preliminary design layout for kitchen, drive-through and dining rooms - 3D Modeled the building structure and facades in Revit; - Collaborated with Structural, MEP and Civil Engineer Consultants; - Construction documentation including: technical details, site/finish/ reflected ceiling/floor plans, sections, and conceptual renderings; - Construction administration including any technical revisions during construction process.
