Mission Statement

We are an inclusive community on a mission to inspire unbounded curiosity and independent thought in every one of our students. In a unique educational environment that extends well beyond campus, we nurture students’ knowledge of themselves and the world, expanding their full academic and personal potential while preparing them to lead lives characterized by thoughtfulness, integrity, and a quest to effect positive change.

Philanthropy at SCH

Giving is an integral part of the success of SCH. The extraordinary generosity of our community members makes SCH what it is today: a school with high expectations, strong values, and happy, hardworking students.

Our students reflect a generous spirit because the adults in their lives model philanthropic behavior. Simply put, philanthropy connects people to SCH in a deeper way and makes the community stronger. Springside School, Chestnut Hill Academy, and now SCH families have invested in the future of our school for more than 150 years to ensure the very best education for our students.

2021-22 school year, we are so grateful to you, our committed donors, for your generous support of our students, faculty, and staff. Your choice to make SCH a philanthropic priority sustained our momentum; advancing our strategic plan, and providing our students necessary tools to become citizens, thinkers, and pioneers in an ever-changing world. As you turn the pages before you, you will see the names of our community members who have generously given of their financial resources in support of our school’s mission. You will see photos of school events made possible through the gift of time by volunteers. And most importantly, you will be reminded of the actions of our faculty, staff, and community as they work diligently to provide a welcoming and supportive environment for our students and families. Thank you for your integral and valued role in the SCH community. Throughout the 2021-22 school year, every SCH student grew their personal talents, found new strength in their voices, and thought about how they can apply lessons learned in the classroom, on the playing field, or on the stage in our wider community. These students are exactly what our world needs, and your support has ensured that we will continue to inspire the next generation of independent thinkers. For nearly 50 years, The Rec has faithfully served its purpose as the performance home to the Players. But this 135-year-old facility is showing its age and requires substantial renovation and updating to ensure it can continue as a valued part of the school’s history.

With the funds raised so far, the roof and the windows of the Rec were replaced this year. The rest of the renovation includes:

With many thanks to our lead donor, Bruce Whelihan from the CHA Class of 1960, we have raised more than $4.7 million of the $6.85 million needed to continue the renovations. Please join the almost 400 donors that have shown their support of this important project.

Bruce has issued an ongoing challenge: He will match each and every gift to the Restore the Rec campaign up to $25,000 per gift.

Progress Report: Campaign for the Commons Coming Together to Make a Difference

RAISED: $2.76M

The Commons is the central hub on campus where our Upper School students dine, study, socialize, train, and compete. The building is home to our Upper School dining hall, Kingsley Gym, Woodward Gym, McCausland squash courts, training rooms, fitness center, and locker rooms as well as our students’ favorite social and hangout areas. This crucial space needs renovations to accommodate our growing student body and offer upgraded facilities to our students.

The plan includes expanding the dining and social areas, creating a state-of-the-art fitness and wellness center, upgrading the training and locker rooms, and redesigning the outside social areas. The impact this campaign will have on the SCH community, including the health and wellness of our students and our ability to compete athletically, will be profound.

Open for Play: Miss Janet’s Playground Coming Together to Make a Difference

In May, ECC families gathered to dedicate a transformed playground to its beloved director, Janet Giovinazzo H’01, P’12, P’15. The play space that many boys remember from their elementary school days at CHA has been replaced with two large play structures and a series of features built with elements from nature that are appropriate for our youngest students—a natural sandbox, a “rock river” with a bridge, a series of stepping logs, and a big hill and tunnel. A slide was added to provide a fun and fast transport for ECC students to slip from the back patio to the grass. A beautiful sign designed by Pia Druggan which reads “Miss Janet’s Playground” will now hang on the fencing surrounding the playground (along W. Springfield Avenue). Many thanks to the McCausland Family and the McCausland Foundation as well as the many other donors who made this fabulous new outdoor space possible. The children of ECC LOVE it!

SCH, always mindful of an opportunity to repurpose and reuse, was pleased to be able to donate the Jordan building playground equipment to the Community Partnership School in North Central Philadelphia, thus enabling a whole new group of elementary school students the chance to enjoy it.

It’s wonderful to see our youngest students enjoy and utilize the new outdoor space. It’s created an incredible opportunity for exploration, creativity, and play.

The Wissahickon Leadership Society recognizes individuals and organizations that make leadership contributions of $1,500 or more annually. Members of The Wissahickon Leadership Society are essential partners with SCH’s dedicated faculty, staff, and administration and share a passion and vision for providing 21st century education to our students.
