UNIQUE COURSES

New programs provide opportunities to gain skills in fast-growing fields Kennesaw State University’s College of Continuing and Professional Education is continuing its proactive approach to class offerings by unveiling new courses to accompany previously existing cuttingedge programs. These courses will provide a tremendous opportunity for those seeking to change careers or advance in their current position. “We’re excited to continue to provide fresh and relevant course offerings,” said Barbara Calhoun, dean, College of Continuing and Professional Education. “We closely monitor the job market for trends and patterns with the goal of fulfilling our students’ interests.” Foot Solutions Academy of Pedorthic Science and KSU have partnered for the Pedorthist Certificate program (page 23), one of the few courses in the country approved to offer the new pedorthic curriculum. You will learn how to specialize in comprehensive patient foot care using therapeutic foot wear and supportive orthotic devices, utilize CAD/CAM

technology, and conduct practice labs in a working orthotics/fitting/technology production facility. Jack Zweber, 2013 graduate, said “The program was convenient and quick, and the instructors are great. By going through the course at KSU, I can now take the certified pedorthist exam, get certified and licensed to practice in any state.” New classes run April 7-26 and May 5-24. The Social Media Marketing Certificate (page 9) is designed to assist companies scrambling to keep pace with this very fluid medium. Tyra Burton, marketing instructor and consultant, will teach the basics of content creation and management for sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn and Pinterest, all with the goal of increasing your company’s branding and visibility. Linda Dudley, 2013 graduate, said, “This course gave me the knowledge and tools needed to understand and effectively manage my company’s social media platforms.” The next course runs June 2-25.

TALKING POINTS

ESL student Moises Arroyo ready for new start “I’ve always wanted to learn to speak English,” said Moises Arroyo. He has been able to do this and more with English as a Second Language (ESL) courses from KSU’s College of Continuing and Professional Education.

next objective. He was studying architecture and journalism but struggled in his English courses. Arroyo plans to take his improved English skills with him to complete his education.

This 27-year-old Mexico City native said he used to feel “incomplete” because of his limited English skills. Now, he said, “I feel better than before.”

Arroyo said another highlight of taking ESL courses has been the personal connection with others from countries such as Brazil, Guatemala and El Salvador. Also, this diligent student has never missed a session – even after accidentally locking his car keys in his house.

Arroyo said he relied on his cousin to translate certain words, but he wanted to learn more. In 2012, he came to a Career Training Expo, a free open house event hosted by the college biannually. “I came with my cousin because I thought no one would speak Spanish, and I needed someone to translate for me,” he recalls. Arroyo met ESL instructor Nancy Brown that night and took an assessment test. “Before she left the room, Ms. Brown spoke to me in Spanish. She said, ‘No cheating!’ It was a surprise, but it made me feel comfortable.” Arroyo started ESL courses shortly after. “I was kind of nervous because I always wanted to learn to speak English, but I wasn’t sure if it was enough to make progress and earn the knowledge.” Today, Arroyo said he no longer has to ask for words to be translated. “I feel comfortable with my English. I can express my feelings to my boss, and I can make a joke with my friends.” He has also been able to accomplish a variety of goals -- one of which involves a Siberian Husky named Lola. He wanted to buy a dog with zero help from others. “I did it by myself,” he said, beaming. “I wrote the email, sent it to the breeder and asked about the price – everything. I felt good about this.” Arroyo will complete his ESL certificate soon, and earning his bachelor’s degree is his 34

His potential is limitless!” Arroyo encourages anyone looking to improve their English skills to take ESL courses, saying, “Believe you can do what you want to do. If you’re doing your best, one day it’s going to happen. Don’t give up.”

Bridge in the 21st Century - Part III, Defense The third in a series of courses for beginning and advancing players offered by the American Contract Bridge League and KSU. In this course we look at techniques for defeating contracts that declarer would make if we do not defend carefully. We start by looking at the guidelines for handling specific situations on defense: opening leads, third-hand play, second-hand play and signals. We move on to look at how the defenders establish winners and take their sure tricks. Then we see how the defenders can interfere with declarer’s plan to make the contract. Finally, we take a look at how the defenders

formulate their plan and put it into action. This course does not require completion of the first two courses in the series but it is recommended that the student consider taking those classes prior to taking this class. $99, 16 Hours R. Women and Money Through divorce, death of a spouse, or choice, more women are more likely to be living on their own. This means women are more likely to assume sole responsibility for making their own financial decisions than ever before. Women live an average of 4.9 years longer than men. This fact alone shows that women face several financial challenges including: • A decrease in income due to the loss of a spouse. • The need for women to stretch their retirement savings over a longer period of time.

• Increasing health-care costs related to chronic health conditions due to aging, including the increasing costs for medications taken over a longer period of time. • The fact that women are likely to provide some long-term care for a spouse or loved one, yet women are more apt to face their own need for longterm care alone. • The fact that women who outlive their spouses will probably bear the ultimate responsibility for the disposition of their marital estate. Women today have never been in a better position to achieve financial security for themselves and their families. Yet seizing the opportunity for long-term financial success requires awareness of potential issues and careful planning. $49, 2.5 Hours T.
