Cursos de la Secundaria

Volume 1 | Issue 1

May 2012

In This Issue Welcome to GEAR UP • Choosing Middle School Courses • Statistics You Should Know Bienvenido a GEAR UP • Eligiendo Cursos En La Secundaria • Estadísticas Que Usted Debe Saber

Middle School Courses Challenge your student now with classes that can help in high school.

Hold high expectations of academic achievement. Monitor students’ time spent outside of school. Students who participate in school events are less likely to drop out of school. Talk to your child about educational plans. Start talking to students in kindergarten about the importance of education. Insist that your child persists when learning is hard and not opt for the easy way out of school. Make sure your child is attending school. Employers and colleges look at attendance records as well as grades. Seek information about going to college. Here are some helpful websites: gentx.org ownyourownfuture.com aie.org

Did You Know... Statistics Every Parent (& Child) Should Know High school dropouts earn an average of $14,500 a year. High school graduates earn an average of $7,000 more a year than non-graduates. College graduates can earn up to $1.5 million more over the course of a lifetime.

Less than 40% of high school dropouts are employed each year. ED NE

90% of jobs are expected to require some postsecondary experience.

The courses students choose in middle school make an impact on their high school education. You should consider several factors when selecting your middle school classes. Challenge your student: Select courses that match their abilities, but are also challenging. Parents, teachers and middle school counselor can help students make the right decisions. Don’t let them choose easy classes thinking that middle school doesn’t matter. The more students are challenged now, the better prepared they will be in high school. Investigate options: Some middle school courses can be taken for high school credit. However, realize that high school credit courses are usually very demanding and require good organizational skills and a determination to get the work done. Talk to teachers and our middle school counselor about high school credit courses in middle school.

For example, if a student likes computers and is considering taking computer classes in high school, you might want them to first take a keyboarding class in middle school. That will increase typing speed and help them be better prepared for high school courses that require knowledge of the keyboard.

Meet with your student’s counselor: Visit with your student’s middle school counselor regarding interests and future plans. The counselor has a wealth of information and is anxious to share it. Remember: The education students receive in high school is directly connected to what they do in middle school. Think about these decisions carefully.

Gracias Vickie Evans Coordinadora De GEAR UP
