Student profiles Ida Thomas

Why do you like studying at Sixth Form? I like studying at the Sixth Form because the non-contact periods allow me to be independent and do my own work. I receive a lot of support from my teachers who are incredibly enthusiastic and encouraging. I have always wanted to study science and this Sixth Form has provided me with my ideal course combination and I am confident they have prepared me for the future

Why do you like studying at Sixth Form? Teddington School Sixth Form is smaller than most and its provided me with more structure and one to one support that colleges don’t give you. Its gives you the stepping stones you need in terms of developing skills like research, independence and higher order thinking and learning.

Why did you choose Teddington Sixth Form? The atmosphere here is absolutely incredible; everyone is really friendly and welcoming which has helped me adjust to Sixth Form life, which was particularly important to me as an external student. Furthermore, compared to other Sixth Forms it has excellent facilities including multiple computer rooms, spacious classrooms and numerous sport grounds. What advice you would give to other students about choosing A Levels you need for your specific course/or direction you may have in mind for university? Choose A Levels you genuinely think you would enjoy and would be willing to dedicate lots of time to! Make sure you also do research into what A Levels you need if you have a specific course/direction in mind for university. The last thing you want is to spend two years doing courses you enjoy but can’t progress with. What are your next steps? I aim to study Veterinary Medicine at a high profile university like Cambridge and possibly a year of study abroad. However I am also considering a gap year to gain more work experience and ensure I am fully prepared for university.

Why did you choose Teddington Sixth Form? Teddington’s results are much higher than when I compared to other Sixth Forms and colleges. The high student and teacher ratio really influenced my decision and I also knew it had an excellent science department which attracted me. What advice you would give to other students about choosing A Levels you need for your specific course/or direction you may have in mind for university? Choose subjects that you enjoyed most at GCSE and or did best in. If you enjoy the subject you are studying you will be more committed to it and definitely reach your potential at A Level. Just remember to work hard and don’t underestimate the jump from GCSE to A Level! Start embedding your learning by using your non-contact periods and revising right from September; don’t wait until just before the exams. What are your next steps? After my A Levels I plan to study Chemical Engineering at university.

At Teddington School Sixth Form we offer students a variety of opportunities, enhancing their life experiences, building selfconfidence and respect. By encouraging students to engage, participate in and lead on some of the activities below we aim to support their applications for the world of work, or higher education. Through these enrichment opportunities it is evident that Teddington students grow into well rounded, open minded individuals who are recognised on a local, regional, national and international scale. • Sixth Form Leadership Committee • Student Council • Jack Petchey • Students Ambassadors • Subject Related Talks • University lectures • External Speakers • Aim Higher days • Peer mentoring • Head Girl and Boy • Graduation Ball • Sports Clubs • Work Experience

Student Voice

We have a number of projects on offer for the students within the Sixth Form to get involved with. They can be elected to be a form representative and subsequently sit on the school council. The can apply to be part of the Sixth Form committee where roles such as Head Girl or Boy, Deputy Girl or Boy and Senior Ambassadors are available to support the school and Sixth Form moving forward. They will be asked to lead on certain areas within the school to help develop their leadership skills within the lower school and to act as roles models within the school community.

Education Destinations Last year our students were very successful with their A Level courses and gained places at many universities across the country. The table below shows some of the universities and courses our students went on to study.

Community and Charity Work Our school core values continue to be emulated within our Sixth Form and our Sixth Form students relish their involvement in fundraising to and raise awareness of charities. Each year due to the determination and kind hearts of our students we make a number of sizeable donations to local and national charities, helping those less fortunate. • • • • • • •

“My gratitude towards Teddington Sixth Form is honestly endless, on countless occasions; you provided aid for all students at Teddington Sixth Form and worked tirelessly for the betterment of our grades. My decision two years ago to remain at Teddington School Sixth Form, rather than move on to another college was a life-changing decision. My gratefulness is perpetual.”

Facilities Teddington is fortunate to have its own Sixth Form Centre, which is a beautifully sculptured two storey building. Framed by soft curves the building compliments our main school building. fully equipped with a variety of modern teaching rooms and three large specialist science laboratories, we are able to offer students an exciting space to which to study. Although most Sixth Form lessons are taught here, three subjects are housed in the main building where Sixth Formers benefit from a bespoke space for Drama, a re-modelled Art studio and a state of the art Photography suite that contains 20 Apple Mac computers. To enable independent learning the centre has its own study area with many computers for you to use and lots of space for you to work in. The building is also fully wireless so you can access the school system through your own devices. For convenience every Sixth Former has their own locker. Away from the classroom there is a dedicated cafÊ area for group work and socialising with friends at breaks and lunch times. This links through bi-folding doors to a large outdoor space which is for the sole use of the Sixth Form students: the perfect place to hold our infamous summer Sixth Form BBQ’s.
