about me

M

My name is Kalie and I am currently a senior at Iowa State University working towards a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Interior Design and a Minor in Urban Studies with a focus on historical architecture. I am passionate about looking at historically traditional spaces through a unique and fresh lens. My goal is to create designs which appreciate a space for what it once was and what it can become.

o1. MODERN RENAISSANCE

luxury residential | 2020 + 2022

TTHIS VACATION HOME will serve as a private retreat for a high profile client, her husband, and children in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. The space should emulate the character of historical architectural styles from the French Renaissance with a symmetrical layout, decorative ornamentation, and exaggerated proportions. Modern elements such as color, furniture, and art will incorporate the client’s modern tastes. Finally, the space should draw from the coastal environment with a color palette of soft mauve pinks, wood tones, and neutrals. An air of calm whimsy will unite the unique elements into a cohesive space.

historical reference

TTHE FOUNDATION OF THIS PROJECT was based on character defining features from the French Renaissance era. The era featured versatile historical elements which could be interestingly paired with modern designs. Great inspiration was taken from a previous trip to Chateau de Chenonceau. The French Renaissance is considered a “rebirth” for social and artistic movements and is thus, a perfect canvas for exploring how classical designs can evolve into the modern world.

•floorplans of this era reference classical design values rooted in balance and geometry.

•closely placed wood beams adorn the living room and primary bedroom ceilings. This ornamentation highlighted the grandeur and expanse of the rooms in which they decorate.

•elegant marble tiles were common through design history and are featured in the butlers pantry of the home.

•hand crafted terra cotta tiles featured throughout French Chateau’s of the era. Many tiles came in classic red or specially hand painted. Terra cotta tiles cover the foyer of the home.

o2. RIVERVIEW TERRACE SUPPER CLUB + VISITORS CENTER

frank lloyd wright rehabilitation | 2022

TTHIS PROJECT was apart of a graduate level Historic Preservation studio which aimed to research and rehabilitate the current Taliesin Visitors Center by Frank Lloyd Wright and Taliesin Associate Architects (TAA). The project finds roots in Wright’s original plans for the Riverview Terrace, a supper club and gateway to Taliesin. The original building will be turned back into a supper club, renowned not only for its food but also for design. An addition on the upper left side will be added to support tour groups, a gift shop, and staff operations for the Taliesin Estate.

left + above: Wright’s 1958 floorplan informs the project floorplan

We believe Wright’s significance as a prominent architect, and arguably, interior designer, places value on his original design intent (1958). The final plans provide a fluid circulation and maximized use of space while maintaining Wright’s style.

TAA’s subsequent 1967’ plans fail to capitalize on Wright’s original design. The use of space fully ignores Wright’s innovative “open floor plans” and most notably, the integration of circular geometry which he explored at this time.

With the intent of sustainably preserving existing infrastructure, we aim to keep only the exterior entry structure from the 1967’ plan.

Visitors to either the visitor’s center or supper club will be invited to experience both offerings. The design intends to intrigue guests to learn more about Frank Lloyd Wright, the Taliesin Estate, and relax for a meal.

03. RED VALENTINO: THROUGH THE LENS

shop-in-shop at La Rinescente | Rome, Italy | 2021

WWITH A CONSTANTLY EVOLVING STYLE AGENDA, Red Valentino has gone from feminine fantasy to edgy and effortlessly cool. To embrace the brands focus on the modern day girl, a girl who lives her life through social media, videos, and photos, the design looks at Red Valentino THROUGH THE LENS. Soft, romantic florals lie behind the first lens of glass dressing the walls. Smaller lenses with mirrors and digital screens offer an unexpected perspective. Material selections include light rosewood inlaid with quartz, marmorino finish, aged bronze, smooth beiges, and pops of bold color. The selections aim to create a fearless mix of luxury and urban, reflecting the missions of the brand and the heart of the girl who wears the clothes.

•Florals have become a staple motif throughout Red Valentino’s collections. The flower represents romantic femininity while also promoting structure, strength, and perseverance. These qualities are at the core of the Red Valentino girl and thus, are featured in a softly modern twist.

•The Red Valentino girl aesthetic- fearless, romantic, and bold. The fashion brand establishes their muse not only through fashion, but through curated blogs, lifestyle essentials, and music playlists. All of these elements influenced the energy we wanted to capture within three walls of the shop-in-shop. A place which mixes domestic and urban, inviting the Red Valentino girl to feel at home where she can laugh with friends, take photos, and become who she dreams.

o4. TUDOR REHABILLITATION

educational | 2021

THE LANDSCAPE

ARCHITECTURE BUILDING

Ton Iowa State University’s campus has sat underused and unmaintained for years. Our team was tasked with rehabilitating the structure to serve as an educational and meeting place for international students. We aimed to honor the buildings rich history while creating a unique space which students could make their own. The project scope covered three levels including faculty offices, student classrooms, a cafe, lounge, and library. Within our team, I developed and produced all elements for the third level.

above: building history

•The Landscape Architecture building was originally constructed as a horse barn in 1900. It was eventually converted to an educational building housing the Landscape Architecture program from 1980. While the building sits underutilized today, it remains one of the oldest buildings on campus, playing a significant role in Iowa State University’s history. We believe history connects people and place. By rehabilitating and restoring historic character defining features, we hope to restore the Iowa State communities connection to this place.

left: reimagined character

•The Landscape Architecture building was built in the Tudor Revival style. Unfortunately, nearly all interior character had been lost. We plan on reimagining the historic elements which would have been, including an abundance of heavy millwork, wood beams, and earth tones. The historic color palate inspired us to introduce colors and patterns from the 1970’s to contrast and highlight traditional tudor features.

•The student lounge encourages international students to meet new people and spend time with friends. Modular furniture and an open floorplan allows for a variety of uses from movie night to an educational workshop. Tudor Revival elements -wood beams, trusses, and balustrade- are reimagined to reintroduce historic character back into the space.

05. SKETCHES AND REDNERINGS

miscellaneous

AA MIXTURE of hand renderings and sketches from various projects and travels, many of which were completed abroad. While studying abroad in Rome, I took the wonderful opportunity to record my experiences with ink and paper. Sketches were completed using Micron pens and a variety of line styles. Drawing famous portico’s, courtyards, and churches throughout Italy was a life changing experience and broadened my understanding of historical design and proportion of space.
