Courtesy KCACSPORTS.COM The present legal entity comes from a reorganization of the conference when the predecessor Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference formally disbanded on December 1, 1928 and a new conference was formed called the Kansas College Athletic Conference. The members were Baker, Bethany, KS Wesleyan, McPherson, Ottawa, and St. Mary’s colleges. At that time sportswriters quickly gave the KCAC league a nickname: the “Little Six,” in contrast to the Big 6 (which became the Big 8, now the Big 12) which also was organized in 1928. St. Mary’s College was discontinued in 1931. The College of Emporia returned to the fold in 1933, and Bethel was readmitted in 1939. Friends, a former member of the KIAC, was admitted in 1953. Sterling and Southwestern were approved for membership in 1958. In 1968 Tabor College and St. Mary of the Plains College were admitted to make twelve members in the conference, and the conference was organized into Northern and Southern divisions until 1970 – when Baker, College of Emporia, and Ottawa withdrew to join two separate Missouri-based conferences. In the mid-1970s the formal name was changed again to Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. In 1975 women’s intercollegiate athletics were incorporated into programs of the KCAC. Ottawa was readmitted in 1981, bringing the conference membership to 10. In 1992 St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City left the conference and eventually closed. In 1999 University of Saint Mary-Leavenworth joined to bring the KCAC membership to ten. Today the KCAC sponsors conference intercollegiate athletics in football, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor/outdoor track and field, baseball, softball, golf, and men’s and women’s tennis.

Peoples Bank Field

This is the Braves fourth season of playing at Peoples Bank Field. Overall, the Braves have a 10-14-2 record with a 6-6-1 KCAC record on the field. During the 2008 season Peoples Bank Field hosted the 2008 Men’s and Women’s KCAC Soccer Championships. Peoples Bank Field features Fieldturf®, a registered trademark of Fieldturf Tarkett. It has been installed on more than 1,800 fields world-wide, several in continuous use for almost a decade. The turf has received wide acclaim for its forgiving nature, durability and grass-like performance. Fieldturf® users have also documented a reduction of sports injuries in comparison to the carpet-like artificial turf of the past. The field features an eight lane track that is named the Bill “Bo” Boucek Track.

Tauy Jones Hall

Hull Center For Athletics On October 15, 2004, the University celebrated the completion of the Hull Center for Athletics with a dedication ceremony. The Hull Center became a reality through the generous gift of Jeff L. (’88) and Tracy J. Hull. The gift was made in honor of Jeff’s grandparents and parents, and represents the ongoing relationship between the Hull Family and Ottawa University. Jeff’s grandfather, Robert L. Hull, was the University’s superintendent of buildings and grounds for over twenty years. In addition to keeping the University’s physical plant running in top shape, Robert was also the general contractor in the construction of the Mabee Athletic Center. Richard L. Hull (’71), Jeff ’s father, attended OU on a football scholarship, while majoring in Biology. A four-year starter on Ottawa’s football team, he was captain of the 1970 KCAC championship team. After graduating from Ottawa, Richard completed medical school and set up a successful medical practice as a physician and surgeon in Iola, Kansas. Jeff came to Ottawa University on a football scholarship as well. He was a four-year starter for the Braves, earning numerous awards including two-time All-Conference, two-time NAIA Academic All-American, and the College Football Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. He graduated with honors and distinction in 1988 with a major in accounting. He has gone on to have a successful career in business, serving as the chairman, president and CEO of Atrium Companies Inc. Jeff’s two other siblings, sister Cindy (’97) and brother Michael (’00), also left lasting marks on Ottawa University. Cindy (Hull) Stockton was an All-Conference player on the Lady Braves basketball team. When she finished her playing career at OU, she held various records including highest field goal percentage and most blocked shots in a season. She was also a member of Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. Michael became OU’s first two-time NAIA First Team All-American football player and is second all-time in career receptions (156). The outstanding athletic talent and academic success represented by the Hull Family affirms a family philosophy that the two should go hand-in-hand. Indeed, the Latin inscription on the Hull Center, mens sana in corpore sano – a healthy mind in a healthy body – gives testimony to this belief.
