STUDENT DIRECTORS TAKE THE HELM OF ONE-ACT PLAYS

For the 2014-2015 school year, NWC students took on the challenge of directing their peers for the Dramateurs’ one-act plays. In October 2014, Charles Faselle ’15 and Olivia Fenton ’15 directed a one-act, comedic adaptation of Homer’s epic The Odyssey. In Tom Smith’s adaptation of the classic work, Odysseus (Anthony Lenczewski ’16) and his crewman Pete (Charles Gfeller ’18) must overcome many perils on their long voyage home from Troy, including an awkward teenage Cyclops named Polly, some Sirens crooning elevator music, and various other gods and monsters. Along the way, they both learn some hard lessons in trust, humility, and the power of brains over brawn.

In February 2015, Haley Higgins ’15 and Jacquelyn Collas ’16 directed Carolyn Lane’s adaptation of Tales of Hans Christian Andersen. From an assortment of surprise packages come some very special gifts – the gifts of storyteller Hans Christian Andersen to the children of the world. Out of a bright birthday box steps “The Steadfast Tin Soldier” to tell of his undying love for a paper dancing doll. From a basket of eggs comes the well-loved story of “The Ugly Duckling.” The trio of tales concludes with the touching romance of “The Little Mermaid” who loves a human – the story discovered in an ancient sea chest. Both productions featured the talents of over a dozen NWC students.
