AZKENA ROCK FESTIVAL, 10 AÑOS DE R&R Diez años, una larga década de rock and roll en la ciudad de Vitoria-Gasteiz, ésta es la celebración que el Azkena Rock Festival se enorgullece de presentar en 2011. Lejos queda ya aquella primera edición de 2002 organizada en la antigua sala Azkena de la ciudad, en la que grupos como Mudhoney, Supersuckers o Backyard Babies eran las primeras estrellas de lo que poco después se convertiría en uno de los festivales de música más aclamados del país y el protagonista absoluto en lo que a rock and roll se refiere. El éxito de aquella incursión festivalera en la ciudad hizo que un año más tarde se apostara por dar un paso de gigante repitiendo la cita al aire libre en un gran recinto como Mendizabala. La apuesta tuvo su efecto y con ella llegaba la primera visita a Europa de Iggy Pop & The Stooges, además de Ray Davies (The Kinks), Steve Earle, The Hellacopters y más bandas internacionales que también atrajeron a fans de otros países. En tan solo dos años el ARF se había consolidado como el festival de rock and roll por excelencia, aunque lo más grande aún estaba por llegar… De 2004 no podemos evitar recordar las lluvias y el reto que supuso para la organización sacar a flote los conciertos y, por supuesto, a Flamin’ Groovies, New York Dolls, Roger McGuinn (The Byrds) o Ryan Adams. Pero, sin duda, el momento clave llegaría en 2005 con Queens Of The Stone Age protagonizando, según la opinión del público, el mejor concierto de la historia del festival; motivo más que suficiente para que Josh Homme y su banda regresen como cabezas de cartel en este décimo aniversario. Además Wilco, The Pogues y Deep Purple, entre otros, redondearon una edición de auténtico lujo. Si 2005 fue un año importante, 2006 superó todas las expectativas con Pearl Jam en lo alto del cartel y más de 40.000 personas botando en un repleto Mendizabala, edición en la que también vimos a My Morning Jacket, Wolfmother y, de nuevo a Iggy y New York Dolls. Arraigado en los corazones de su público incondicional - y por ello cada vez más exigente-, el festival ha superado todos los altibajos a los que se ha enfrentado y, a estas alturas, podemos estar orgullosos de haber disfrutado de TOOL y DKT/MC5 en 2007, Sex Pistols y Dinosaur Jr. en 2008, Alice Cooper y The Black Crowes -otro de los mejores conciertos del ARF- en 2009, hasta llegar al grandísimo momento de Chris Isaak bajo la lluvia el año pasado, poco después de que Bob Dylan hiciera temblar Mendizabala. A lo largo de esta década los escenarios del ARF han visto desfilar a lo más destacado del panorama rockero, grandes figuras y muchas otras quizás no tan conocidas que han resultado grandes descubrimientos. Pero si de algo se puede enorgullecer el Azkena Rock Festival es de contar con un séquito de fans adictos a su dosis anual de rock and roll en Vitoria. Para celebrarlo, este año hemos organizado un festival por todo lo alto, con un montón de eventos especiales repartidos por la ciudad que sorprenderán a más de uno durante la semana del 21 al 26 de junio.

AZKENA ROCK JAIALDIA, ROCK&ROLLA 10 URTEZ Hamar urte, rock and rolla hamarkada luze batez Vitoria-Gasteizko hirian, hauxe da Azkena Rock Jaialdiak 2011n harro aurkezten duen ospakizuna. Urrun geratzen da hiriko Azkena areto zaharrean antolatutako 2002ko lehen edizioa. Orduan Mudhoney, Supersukers edo Backyard Babies bezalako taldeak izan ziren geroxeago herrialdeko musika-jaialdirik txalotuena eta rock and rollari dagokionez erabateko protagonista bihurtuko zenaren lehenengo izarrak. Jaialdiaren arrakastak urrats erraldoi bat ematearen aldeko apustua ekarri zuen urtebete beranduago eta zita kanpoan errepikatu zen Mendizabala bezalako barruti handian. Apustuak eragina izan zuen eta berarekin Iggy Pop & The Stooges-ek Europara egiten zuten lehenengo bisita heldu zen, horrez gain Ray Davies (The Kinks), Steve Earle, The Hellacopterts eta nazioarteko banda gehiagok beste herrialde batzuetako zaleak erakarri zituzten. Bi urtean ARF rock and rolleko jaialdietan nagusiena gisa finkatu zen, nahiz eta oraindik handiena heltzear egon… 2004ko edizioari dagokionez, ezin ditugu euriak ahaztu ezta antolakuntzak kontzertu guztiak aurrera ateratzeko izan zuen erronka ere eta, jakina, Flamin’ Groovies, New York Dolls, Roger McGuinn (The Byrds) edo Ryan Adams. Baina, zalantzarik gabe, 2005ean helduko zen une giltzarria Queens Of The Stone Age taldearekin, publikoaren iritziaren arabera, jaialdiaren historiaren kontzerturik onena; arrazoi nahikoa Josh Homme eta bere banda kartel-buru itzul daitezen hamargarren urteurren honetan. Gainera, Wilco, The Pogues eta Deep Purple-k, besteak beste, biribildu zuten benetako luxuzko edizioa. 2005 urte garrantzitsua izan bazen, 2006k itxaropen guztiak gainditu zituen Pearl Jam kartelaren gorenean zegoela eta 40.000 lagun baino gehiagorekin saltoka erabat beterik zegoen Mendizabala barrutian. Edizio honetan My Morning Jacket eta Wolfmother-ez gain, Iggy eta New York Dolls ikusi genituen berriro. Hamarkada honetan zehar ARFren eszenatokiek rock-panoramaren banda gailenak ikusi dituzte, figura handiak eta hain ezagunak izan ez arren, aurkikuntza handiak gertatu diren beste asko. Baina, Azkena Rock Jaialdia ezertaz harro egon badaiteke, urtero Gasteizera bere rock and rolleko dosiaren bila hurbiltzen den jarraitzaile-talde bat izateaz da. AZKENA ROCK FESTIVAL, 10 YEARS OF R&R Ten years, a long decade of rock and roll in the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz: that is the celebration the Azkena Rock Festival is proud to present in 2011. We are far from that first 2002 edition organized at the old Azkena hall in the city where groups like Mudhoney, Supersuckers or Backyard Babies were the first stars of what a bit later became one of the most acclaimed festivals in the country and absolute leader of the rock and roll scene. The success of that festival in the city made possible to take a much bigger step the year after repeating the open air date in a bigger venue as Mendizabala. The new proposal had its effect and with it, the first visit to Europe of bands like Iggy Pop & The Stooges, as well as Ray Davies (The Kinks), Steve Earle, The Hellacopters and more international bands which also attracted fans from other countries. In only two years the ARF has consolidated as the rock and roll festival par excellence although the greatest part hadn’t arrived already… From 2004 we can’t avoid remembering the rains and the challenge it meant for the organization to go on with the concerts with some bands like Flamin’ Groovies, New York Dolls, Roger McGuinn (The Byrds) or Ryan Adams. But undoubtedly, the key moment arrived in 2005 with the Queens Of The Stone Age starring, according to the audience, the best concert of the festival history – a more than enough reason for Josh Homme and his band to come back as headliners of this tenth anniversary. Wilco, The Pogues and Deep Purple completed this truely luxury edition. If 2005 was an important year, 2006 exceeded all the expectations with Pearl Jam as headliner and more than 40,000 people jumping in a full Mendizabala – an edition where we also saw My Morning Jacket, Wolfmother and, again, Iggy and New York Dolls. Deeply rooted in its staunch audience, and therefore more and more exigent, the festival has exceeded all its ups and downs it has faced. By now, we can be proud of having been able to enjoy TOOL and DKT/MC5 in 2007, Sex Pistols and Dinosaur Jr. in 2008, Alice Cooper and The Black Crowes – one of the other best ARF concerts- in 2009, up to the greatest moment with Chris Isaak under the rain last year, a little bit after Bob Dylan made Mendizabala tremble. Throughout this decade the ARF stages have seen the most outstanding figures of the rock scene, great musicians, underground bands and many others perhaps not so known who have become true discoveries. But what the Azkena Rock Festival is really proud of, is the flock of fans addicted to their annual dosis of rock and roll in Vitoria. To celebrate it, this year we have organized a festival in style with a lot of special events all around the city which will mean a surprise for some people on the week of the 21st to the 26th.

El 10º aniversario del Azkena Rock Festival ha recorrido todo el país gracias al ARF 10th Anniversary Tour Party que se ha celebrado durante los últimos meses en muchas salas de España, fiestas en las que no ha faltado la música en directo. El Foro del ARF (www.foroazkenarock.com) es un punto de encuentro para los fans de la música y del Azkena Rock Festival en el que sus incondicionales debaten acerca de todo lo que gira en torno al festival: se desmenuza el cartel, se proponen bandas y se exponen iniciativas originales. Fue en el seno de este espacio donde surgió la idea de realizar un disco recopilatorio con canciones de los grupos de los que algunos foreros forman parte, una manera personal de celebrar el décimo aniversario del ARF. La propuesta no pasó desapercibida para la organización, Last Tour International, que decidió apoyarla encargándose de la edición del disco para regalárselo al público del festival que contara con el ARF Passport. El resultado es un triple CD con 42 temas de otras tantas bandas emergentes, canciones elegidas por los responsables y usuarios del Foro del ARF. Esperamos que os guste y, que si no los conocíais ya, descubráis un montón de grupos interesantes. El CD también se puede comprar en el puesto oficial de merchandise del recinto de Mendizabala. The ARF forum (www.foroazkenarock.com) is the meeting point for music and the Azkena Rock Festival fans where their staunch admirers debate about everything that goes on around the festival: the line-up is fully analyzed, bands are proposed and original initiatives are exposed. It was in this space where the idea of doing a compilation album with songs from the forum bands came out as a personal way to celebrate the tenth ARF anniversary. The proposal didn’t go unnoticed by the organization Last Tour International who decided to support it by dealing with the album edition to give it as a present to the festival audience having bought the ARF Passport. The result is a triple CD with 42 tracks of so many other emerging bands, songs chosen by the ARF Forum users and responsible ones. El Auditorio del Conservatorio de música Jesús Guridi de Vitoria-Gasteiz inaugura la semana del Azkena Rock Festival el martes 21 de junio con un concierto muy original protagonizado por los alumnos del centro. Grandes canciones de la historia del rock sonarán como nunca antes adaptadas para formaciones muy diferentes a las originales: la orquesta sinfónica, el coro y la big band del conservatorio. El repertorio incluirá una selección de clásicos del rock con algunos de los mejores temas de grupos de diferentes estilos, desde Deep Purple, Queen o Pink Floyd hasta Brian Setzer Orchestra o Steppenwolf. Una perfecta ocasión para aunar música clásica y rock and roll y para hacer a los jóvenes estudiantes parte activa del aniversario del Azkena Rock Festival 2011. The Auditory of the Conservatory of music Jesús Guridi from Vitoria-Gasteiz opens during the Azkena Rock Festival week, on Tuesday June 21st with a very special concert performed by the centre’s students. Great songs from the rock history will sound as never before adapted for very different formations to the original ones: the symphonic orcuestra, the chorus and the conservatory big band. The set will include a selection of rock classics with some of the best songs from bands with different styles going from Deep Purple, Queen or Pink Floyd to Brian Setzer Orchestra or Steppenwolf. This will be the perfect chance to combine classic music and rock and roll and to make the young students become an active part of the Azkena Rock Festival 2011 anniversary.

El Azkena Rock Festival 2011 presenta en Vitoria-Gasteiz la inauguración mundial del trabajo fotográfico sobre Motörhead realizado por Pep Bonet. El fotógrafo mallorquín ha viajado con la banda documentando su vida en la carretera y captando en instantes únicos la energía e intensidad de uno de los grupos de rock and roll más emblemáticos del panorama mundial. En 2009 les acompañó durante su gira sudamericana (Brasil, Colombia, Argentina…), en 2010 continuó con Lemmy y los suyos en el tour de festivales europeos y tampoco se separó del grupo durante la grabación de su último disco “The Wörld Is Yours” en Los Ángeles. Todos estos momentos han quedado retratados desde un punto de vista privilegiado, personal y documental a través del objetivo de Bonet para presentarlos en esta muestra que reúne más de 90 imágenes con un diseño expositivo de Fernando Martínez de Viñaspre. The Azkena Rock Festival 2011 presents the international opening of the photographic work about Motörhead done by Pep Bonet. The photograph from Mallorca has travelled with the band documenting their life on the road and capturing unique moments of energy and intensity of one of the most emblematic rock and roll bands of the international scene. He travelled with them in 2009 during their tour around South America (Brasil, Colombia, Argentina…), he continued in 2010 with Lemmy and his mates in the European festivals tour and he did not separate from the group either during the recording of his last album “The Wörld Is Yours” in Los Ángeles. All these moments have been portrayed from a privileged, personal and documentary point of view through Bonet’s objective to present them as an exhibition showing more than 90 images with an installation design by Fernando Martínez from Viñaspre.

Mike Farris regresa a Euskadi para ofrecer un concierto muy especial en la catedral vitoriana de Santa María (Catedral Vieja). El que fuera líder de Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies llega junto a su banda The Roseland Rhythm Revue en la que reúne a músicos de dilatada trayectoria que a lo largo de sus carreras han acompañado a artistas como Johnny Cash o Stevie Ray Vaughan. Famoso por sus intensos directos, Farris tendrá la ocasión de mostrar su voz privilegiada en una de las catedrales góticas más bellas de Europa, templo que sirvió de fuente de inspiración a Ken Follett para su novela “Un mundo sin fin” -continuación de la famosa “Los Pilares de la Tierra”-, según reconocía el autor en la presentación de la obra que tuvo lugar en el pórtico de la catedral. Esta cita es la única visita del grupo a España en 2011 y será grabada en vídeo para su posterior edición. CONCIERTOS EN LA PLAZA DE LA VIRGEN BLANCA KONTZERTUAK AMA ZURIAREN PLAZAN CONCERTS AT THE VIRGEN BLANCA SQUARE Los conciertos en la Plaza de la Virgen Blanca, al aire libre y gratuitos, se han convertido en un clásico del Azkena Rock Festival. Con esta programación el corazón de la ciudad se llena de música los mediodías del viernes, sábado y domingo antes de que los decibelios estallen en Mendizabala. En la jornada del viernes Rob Kingsley, uno de los mejores impersonators de Elvis Presley en todo el mundo, hará revivir a “El Rey” cantando sus mejores temas. El sábado retrocederemos en el tiempo hasta la época dorada del soul gracias a la voz negra del británico James Hunter, discípulo de clásicos como Sam Cook o Jackie Wilson. Por último, la jornada del domingo llega a La Virgen Blanca una de las estrellas de la música del siglo XX, nada menos que Gregg Allman, fundador, junto a su hermano Duane, de los Allman Brothres; todo un icono del rock sureño y una banda seminal en la historia de la música. Ofrecerá un concierto acústico con un repertorio especial preparado para la ocasión, diferente al que interpretará la noche anterior en el escenario de Mendizabala. El Artium se convierte durante estos días en el centro de debate de diferentes cuestiones que giran en torno al Azkena Rock Festival. Temas tan controvertidos como “La filosofía del ARF” y las “Reunificaciones de bandas” serán puestos sobre la mesa para que periodistas músicos, promotores e incluso miembros del foro ARF expongan sus puntos de vista. Las charlas, que tendrán lugar el viernes y el sábado antes de los conciertos de la Virgen Blanca, estarán moderadas por Carlos González, periodista alavés responsable de Cultura del Diario de Noticias de Álava. Prepara tu cámara para este rally fotográfico que te propone un re-descubrimiento de la ciudad. No es necesario contar con un equipo profesional, tan sólo necesitas una cámara de fotos y un poco de imaginación. A los participantes se les facilitará un listado con los temas que deberán retratar, series que irán relacionadas con la celebración del Azkena Rock Festival y el rock en nuestra ciudad. La sesión se prolongará hasta el mediodía y por la tarde cada participante deberá elegir y presentar en formato digital la imagen correspondiente a cada uno de los temas. Los trabajos se proyectarán en Centro Cívico El Campillo y un jurado escogerá a los ganadores. Habrá categorías para mayores y menores de 16 años y en ambas se concederán suculentos premios, económicos y en material fotográfico (un total de 1.500€ en premios). Se valorará el conjunto de la obra de cada participante, además de la creatividad, el atrevimiento, la resolución técnica y la imaginación. MANUAL DE USO RECINTO MENDIZABALA ¿A QUÉ HORA SE ABREN LAS PUERTAS? La apertura de puertas del recinto del festival será a las 16:30 horas todos los días. HORARIO DE TAQUILLAS. VENTA DE ENTRADAS, CAMBIO DE BONOS POR PULSERAS Y RECOGIDA DE ACREDITACIONES E INVITACIONES Jueves: de 13:00 a 1 de la madrugada / Viernes: de 13:00 a 1 de la madrugada / Sábado: de 14:00 a 1 de la madrugada. APARCAMIENTO Todos los vehículos que accedan al festival podrán aparcar en el parking del estadio de fútbol de Mendizorroza, situado a 300m del recinto del festival. SERVICIO DE TAXIS Teléfono del servicio de Radio Taxi: 945 27 35 00 CAMBIA TU BONO POR UNA PULSERA Tanto los bonos que se adquieran anticipadamente como los que se compren el día del festival deberán ser canjeados por pulseras en las taquillas indicadas con el nombre “Pulseras”. La pulsera te permitirá entrar y salir del recinto cuantas veces lo desees hasta las 05:00 de la madrugada. Las entradas de día no llevan pulsera por lo que si sales del recinto no podrás volver a entrar. Recuerda que LOS BONOS SON PERSONALES E INTRANSFERIBLES. En el momento que canjees tu bono por la pulsera, éste se convierte en tu pase para acceder al recinto de conciertos y la entrada deja de tener valor alguno. Cuida la pulsera, no te la quites, pierdas, rompas o intercambies con otra persona, porque con ello perderás tu derecho a acceder al recinto. Si las personas de seguridad denotan que tu pulsera está rota o forzada, te impedirán el acceso, dando por hecho que la has intercambiado con otra persona. ¿CUÁNDO SE ABRE LA ZONA DE ACAMPADA? La zona de acampada se abrirá el miércoles 22 de junio a las 18:00 y permanecerá abierta hasta el domingo 26 de junio a la tarde. El derecho a acampada se adquiere con la adquisición de cualquiera de las entradas (día o bono) del Azkena Rock Festival, pudiendo acampar en cualquier momento entre las fechas señaladas. En la zona de acampada se puede introducir comida y bebida así como camping gas. COMIDA Y BEBIDA Para comprar comida y bebida necesitarás canjear tu dinero por los correspondientes tickets en las distintas cajas repartidas por el recinto. Te sugerimos que no esperes a la hora punta para comprar tus tickets; sé previsor y cómpralos al entrar en el recinto, te evitarás muchas colas. Recuerda también que EN EL RECINTO DEL FESTIVAL NO SE PUEDE INTRODUCIR NI COMIDA NI BEBIDA. ZONA DE MINUSVÁLIDOS En los escenarios principales, junto a las mesas de sonido, habrá una zona elevada para que los asistentes con problemas de movilidad puedan ver las actuaciones. SERVICIOS MÉDICOS En el Azkena Rock Festival hay un área destinada a los Servicios Médicos, equipada con médicos, ATS, ambulancias, hospital de emergencia… Si te sientes mal, o has tenido o presenciado algún tipo de accidente, acude allí y solicita que te asistan de inmediato. Asimismo, habrá una representación de protección civil, los bomberos y la policía local. OBJETOS PELIGROSOS Está prohibido entrar al Azkena Rock Festival con objetos punzantes, de cristal, metálicos, arrojadizos, inflamables o contundentes. En la entrada se realizará un control por la seguridad de todos. Por favor, colabora con nosotros y vente ligero al Azkena Rock Festival. CONSERVACIÓN DE LA ZONA El Azkena Rock Festival cuenta con una ubicación privilegiada: Mendizabala. La limpieza y conservación de este espacio natural es uno de nuestros principales objetivos y esperamos que el tuyo también. OTROS CONSEJOS Está prohibido entrar al Azkena Rock Festival con grabadoras de audio, de video y/o cámaras fotográficas profesionales (con reflex o teleobjetivo). USER’S MANUAL MENDIZABALA VENUE WHAT TIME WILL THE DOORS BE OPENED? The Festival venue will open its doors at 16.30h everyday. TICKETS OFFICES TIMETABLES: TICKETS SALE, VOUCHERS FOR WRISTBANDS EXCHANGE AND PASSES AND INVITATIONS COLLECTION. Thursday: from 13:00h in the afternoon to 1h in the morning / Friday: from 13:00h in the afternoon to 1h in the morning / Saturday: from 14:00h in the afternoon to 1h in the morning PARKING All of the vehicles going to the Festival will be able to park in the soccer Mendizorroza Stadium parking, located 300m far away from the Festival venue. TAXIS SERVICE Radio Taxi service telephone: 00 34 945 27 35 00 CHANGE YOUR VOUCHER FOR A WRISTBAND Both the vouchers purchased in advance as well as those bought during the Festival, will have to be exchanged for wristbands in the ticket offices announced as “Pulseras” (“Wristbands”). The wristband will allow you to enter and go out as many times as you like, from your first entrance into the concert venue until 5.00h in the morning. The one-day tickets do not have wristbands so if you go out you will not be able to go back. The 3 day-vouchers are PERSONAL AND NON TRANSFERABLE. Right after you change your voucher for the wristband, this becomes your pass to access the venue to the concerts and t he ticket becomes useless. Take care of the wristband, do not take it off, break it or exchange it with anyone else as you will loose your entrance right to the venue by doing so. If the security staff see any sign of a broken or forced wristband, they will prevent you from going into the venue, taken for granted you have exchanged it with other person. WHEN WILL THE CAMPING BE OPENED? The camping area will be opened on Wednesday 13th of May at 18.00h and will remain opened until Sunday 17th of May in the evening. The right for camping is acquired with the acquisition of any Azkena Rock Festival ticket (one-day ticket or voucher) and it will be possible to camp at any moment during the abovementioned dates. It is allowed to enter food and drinks in the camping area as well as campingaz. FOOD AND DRINKS If you want to get food and drinks, you will have to get previously the respective tickets provided for such purpose in the different boxes placed all around the venue. We suggest you not to wait to the peak hours to buy your tickets. Think in advance and get them once you get in the concert venue, you will avoid many queues. Remember also that IT IS NOT ALLOWED TO ENTER FOOD OR DRINKS IN THE FESTIVAL VENUE. HANDICAPPED AREA At the sides of both main stages, next to the mixers, there will be a higher area designated for those people with mobility problems so that they can watch the shows. MEDICAL SERVICES There is an area at the entrance of the Azkena Rock Festival for Medical Services with doctors, nurses, ambulances, emergency hospital… If you feel sick or you have suffered or witnessed any kind of accident, go there and ask for an immediate assistance. There will be also members of the civil protection service, the fire-brigade and the local police. DANGEROUS OBJECTS It is forbidden to enter the Azkena Rock Festival with sharp, glass, metallic, easily thrown, flammable or heavy objects. At the entrance there will be a check for everyone´s security. Please, collaborate with us and come light to the Azkena Rock Festival. PRESERVATION OF THE AREA The Azkena Rock Festival is located in a privileged place:Mendizabala. One of our main goals is the cleaning and preservation of this natural space and we hope it is your concern too. OTHER ADVISES It is forbidden to enter the Azkena Rock Festival with professional audio and video recorders or cameras (reflex o with telephoto lens). TEATRO, PERFORMANCES Y BODAS AL ESTILO LAS VEGAS EN MENDIZABALA ANTZERKIA, PERFORMANCEAK ETA LAS VEGAS ESTILOKO EZKONTZAK MENDIZABALAN THEATRE, PERFORMANCES AND WEDDINGS IN THE STYLE OF LAS VEGAS IN MENDIZABALA El recinto de Mendizabala se convierte este año en una gran fiesta ambientada en Las Vegas, cargada de música en directo y algunas otras sorpresas. Entre las actividades especiales nos encontraremos con la representación teatral “Nocturne Beastly Cabaret Troup” (una troup de pájaros nocturnos); cabaret oscuro y canalla embriagado del Rock & Roll que despertará tus más bajos instintos. También podremos ver la adaptación teatral del film de culto de 1975 “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” con su glam rock de los 70 y toques vampírico-sexuales de la mano del Doctor Frank-N-Furter. Además te daremos la oportunidad de compartir cena con estos míticos personajes. Por otra parte, gracias a la colaboración con la empresa vitoriana Act & Co, Mendizabala contará con la instalación de la ARF Wedding Chapel, una capilla para oficiar bodas al estilo Las Vegas con cura y atuendo de Elvis. Te llevarás un recuerdo fotográfico inolvidable de la décima edición del festival. Si se mete en una coctelera el cancionero de los Dubliners, bastante misticismo carlista decimonónico, independentismo navarro, incredulidad y vehemencia ante la doctrina clásica del nacionalismo vasco, alcoholismo, desprecio absoluto a la constitución española, altas dosis de humor y muchas ganas de juerga en conciertos llenos de músicos colocados a la manera de los Jefferson Airplane en el 67, ya tenemos a los Bizardunak. Ellos lo definen como “folk radikal vasco”. Los nueve barbudos navarros van a la yugular con sus revisiones de temas irlandeses y americanos clásicos y temas propios de pegadizos estribillos. Sus letras sin prejuicios no dejan títere con cabeza y atacan a todo lo más sagrado siempre desde el humor más descarado y provocativo. Talde nafar honen osagaiak hurrengoak dira: Dubliners-en kantutegia, hemeretzigarren mendeko mistizismo karlista, independentismo nafarra, euskal nazionalismo klasikoarenganako fedegabezia, alkoholismoa, Espainiako konstituzioari mespretxua, humorea, parrandarako zaletasun handia eta Jefferson Airplane-ren antzera kolokatutako musikariak. If we put in a shaker the Dubliners’ song book, quite a lot of carlist mysticism from the IXX century, independent spirit from Navarra, with some skepticism and vehemency in front of the classic Basque nationalist doctrine, alcoholism, a deep-seated contempt for the Spanish Constitution, high doses of humor and eagerness for party in concerts full of stoned musicians in the style of Jefferson Airplane in ‘67, we get Bizardunak. They define it as “Basque radical folk”. The new bearded men go directly to the point with their reviews of classic Irish and American songs together with their own songs with sticky chorus. Their lyrics without prejudices spare nobody and attack all the most sacred things always from the most shameless and provocative humor.

At the end of the last millenium he started his solo career after collaborating with his idol Alice Cooper. After four albums, “Hellbilly Deluxe 2” is his last release.

The Riff Truckers se formó en 2005 en la localidad vizcaína de Ea. Desde sus comienzos apostaron por el rock&roll, sin dejar de lado el blues, el country, y como no, el whisky. En el año 2006 empezaron a dar sus primeros conciertos y desde entonces no han parado. Después de una primera demo lanzaban su, primer disco de estudio en 2009 grabado en los estudios Muxik-On de Muxika (Bizkaia) bajo la atenta mirada de Iñigo Etxebarrieta “Pitu” (técnico de Berri Txarrak, Extremoduro y Gatibu…) y con las colaboraciones de Gaizka de Audience (saxo, hammond y teclado) y Gotzon de The EIB’s (guitarra). El disco se llama “On route” y está compuesto por ocho temas de autentico rock&roll que les han servido para hacerse con el primer premio en la XXII edición del concurso Pop Rock Villa de Bilbao (2010). After a first demo they launched their first studio album in 2009 recorded at the Muxik-On studios at Muxika (Bizkaia) carefullly supervised by Iñigo Etxebarrieta “Pitu” (sound technician of Basque bands like Berri Txarrak, Extremoduro and Gatibu, among others) and with the collaborations of Gaizka from Audience (sax, hammond and keyboard) and Gotzon from The EIB’s (guitar). The album is called “On route” and it is comprised of eight songs of true rock&roll with which they have got the first award at the Pop Rock Villa de Bilbao XXII edition (2010).

This is their twelfth album released last year after 25 years of career and it is one of the most beautiful and moving works that has seen light in the last years.

El resto, Nacho Beltrán (batería), Joe González (saxo) y Rober (guitarra, voz), no necesitan mucha presentación. “Gargantuan Melee” es un disco que supera las barreras en forma de expectativas gracias a dos factores: el barbecho de dos años del grupo y cierto eclecticismo. Reúne ejercicios de abstracción donde el blues sufre de luxaciones para encaminarse hasta la efectividad. By this stage they have won in their own right a place among the greatest rock and roll history. After Homme’s experience as Them Crooked Vultures’ leader, they are now back to the stages and return to Mendizabala six years after their concert at the ARF 2005.

En 2010 participan en el recopilatorio “Ataque Rockabilly vol 5” de la discográfica mexicana Esquilo Records y en diciembre de 2010 lanzan Rockin’Noise” (Subterfuge), un CD con 17 temas producido por 17 temas, con reminiscencias de Buddy Holly a los Clash, de Bo Diddley a The Reverend Horton Heat, pasando por The Meteors y Social Distortion, sin olvidar a Stray Cats. Juke Box Racket taldea Bilbon, 2007an, sortu zen, hiru belaunaldi ezberdinetako rockeroez osatuta. No hay armonía tan intensa y emocionante como la fraternal. A saga in which The Avett Brothers could be included, a folk-rock band coming from North Carolina formed by two brothers: Scott and Seth, in the banjo and guitar respectively (although in fact they play multiple instruments) together with Bob Crawford (bassist). Band Of Horses es un grupo procedente de Seattle que cuenta con tres discos de estudio en su haber. Liderada por Ben Bridwell (guitarra y voz), la banda ha cautivado a crítica y público con su indie folk-rock y se ha convertido, desde 2004, en una de las mayores promesas del género en Estados Unidos. En 2005 editaron su debut, “Limited Edition Tour”, un EP que se vendió exclusivamente en sus presentaciones en directo y en el sitio web de Sub Pop. Su primer álbum, “Everything all the Time” (2006) obtuvo muy buenas críticas en las que se les comparaba con My Morning Jacket y Jane´s Addiction debido, principalmente, a las similitudes vocales. In 2005 they edited their debut “Limited Edition Tour”, an EP sold exclusively in presentations and at the Sub Pop web site. Their first LP “Everything all the Time” was produced by Phil Ek and got good reviews. It has been compared to My Morning Jacket and Jane´s Addiction, to a great extent due to the vocal similarities. Their last work “Infinite Arms” was released only some few months ago.

THE KNOCKOUTS
The Knockouts es un trío de rock sueco formado en 1996 en Estocolmo por el cantante y guitarrista Johan Frandsen. Aunque en todo este tiempo solo han editado tres discos de estudio y un EP, el grupo ha empleado gran parte de su carrera recorriendo las carreteras de Europa de concierto en concierto y participando en varios festivales. Practican un punk rock bañado de rockabilly, festivo y en ocasiones acompañado de arreglos de vientos. Johan Frandsen también formó parte durante dos años del grupo The GoGetters, una formación sueca de rockabilly. Su último disco es el intenso y explosivo “Among The Vultures” publicado el pasado 2010, un disco de rock and roll adictivo que vuelve locos a los punk rockers. Pero la carrera de Setzer continúa y actualmente cuenta con ocho referencias discográficas en solitario y otras doce junto a The Brian Setzer Orchestra, Su último disco es “Setzer Goes Instru-Mental”, publicado el pasado mes de abril, y supone su primer trabajo instrumental. En la gira europea que le trae al Azkena Rock, interpretará un set especial junto al también co-fundador de Stray Cats Slim Jim Phantom. His last album entitled “Setzer Goes Instru-Mental” was released last April and it is his first instrumental work. In his European tour bringing him to the Azkena Rock and baptized as “Brian Setzer’s Rockabilly Riot” he will interpret a special set together with the also Stray Cats’ co-founder Slim Jim Phantom.

The Whybirds es una banda de Bedford, Inglaterra, aunque su música suene 100% americana: country-rock potente de guitarras y melodías pegadizas, sin resultar edulcorados, órganos hammond por aquí, armónicas por allá y una amplia gama de canciones y estilos vocales. En fin, una delicia, fácil de asimilar. Se estrenaron en el año 2007 con “Tonight”, un EP de carácter optimista y una maestría musical que volvieron a mostrar con mayor sentido de la madurez un año más tarde en su primer disco largo de título homónimo. El pasado 2010 el cuarteto británico renovaba su repertorio publicando un segundo álbum: “Cold Blue Sky”, más que recomendable. Bere soinua %100 amerikarra bada ere, Bedford-eko talde ingeles baten aurrean gaude. Countryrock indartsua, melodia itsaskorrak -gozoegiak izan gabe-, hammond organoak, harmonikak eta ahots estilo ezberdinak dituzten abesti sorta ederra aurkezten digute, barneratzeko erreza eta atsegina. 2007an “Tonight” EParekin estreinatu ziren, estilo optimista eta maila musikal handia erakutsi zuen lan bikaina. Danzig es una banda formada en 1987 por el vocalista Glenn Danzig tras su salida de The Misfits y tras poner punto final a Samhain. Han editado una decena de referencias discográficas y se han movido por estilos diferentes como el heavy metal y el hard rock. Si en sus comienzos la banda mostraba una progresión del gótico-deathrock de Samhain hacia un ritmo más pesado, con más blues y heavy metal, años después, coincidiendo con cambios en la formación, comenzaron a utilizar sintetizadores y a experimentar con la electrónica, fusionando heavy metal y rock industrial en su quinto álbum “Blackacidevil” (1996). En los siguientes trabajos la evolución del grupo continuó hacia el goth metal mientras que la alineación de sus componentes cambiaba con cada álbum. Su último disco es “Deth Red Sabaoth” de 2010. Como guinda para el pastel de este cumpleaños, los diez años de rock and roll que han hecho vibrar a miles de fans en la capital alavesa quedarán inmortalizados en dos obras emotivas y documentales. El cineasta vitoriano Juanma Bajo Ulloa (“La madre muerta”, “Airbag”, Frágil…) está inmerso en un largometraje que contará la historia del festival a través de sus verdaderos protagonistas: el público. La emoción y la pasión de los seguidores pretende ser el hilo conductor del relato, con los propios artistas y otros personajes que han pasado por el Azkena Rock como secundarios de lujo. El estreno del documental está previsto para este otoño. Eduardo Ranedo (Ruta 66, Radio Euskadi), uno de los críticos musicales más destacados de nuestra escena, por su parte, nos contará lo que ha ocurrido durante todo este tiempo en Mendizabala a través de un detallado libro que verá la luz el año que viene. Contará con las colaboraciones de músicos y periodistas además de presentarnos las mejores imágenes y una recopilación de afiches. The film-maker from Vitoria Juanma Bajo Ulloa (“La madre muerta”, “Airbag”, Frágil…) is immersed in a film which tells the story of the festival through its true main characters: the audience. The fans’ emotion and passion aims to be the thread of the story with the very artists and other characters visiting the Azkena Rock as luxury secondary actors. The debut of the documentary is previewed for this autumn. Eduardo Ranedo (Ruta 66, Radio Euskadi) one of the most outstanding music critics of our scene, on his side, will tell us what has happened during all this time in Mendizabala through a detailed book which will see the light next year. Some musicians and journalists will be collaborating in it and it will also show the best images and a compilation of posters.
