Secret 2 GETTING A HANDLE ON OBJECTIVE TESTING tephen went to the mall to buy a birthday present for his girlfriend. He took his friend Charlotte along to help because he always had a hard time making decisions. As they entered the mall, Charlotte asked him how he felt about the history test they had taken earlier in the day. “Not so good,” said Stephen. “It was multiple-choice.” Stephen dreaded multiple-choice tests. After reading the question, he would read the answer choices three or four times, hoping that the right answer would jump out at him. But it rarely did. Every time he filled in an answer choice, he felt nervous and usually ended up changing his answer immediately after. Charlotte, on the other hand, loved multiple-choice tests. “But multiple-choice questions are a cinch,” she explained to Stephen. “The answer’s right there. It’s not like you have to pull it out of thin air.” “But I’d rather pull it out of thin air,” he sighed. “I get distracted by all the choices.” Charlotte tried to cheer him up. “Well, next week we’re having an essay exam in English. I’m sure you’ll do well on that.” “Sure,” Stephen said, “but what about the SAT? That’s entirely multiple-choice.”
