CREATIVE CORE FOUNDATIONAL

DIVERSE

All undergraduate School of Art, Architecture + Design students take Creative Core classes during their first two years

Because any IU student can take Creative Core classes, you’ll learn what it means to collaborate and think across disciplines

THE CLASSES Intro to Art, Design, and Merchandising Color Drawing 3D Design

Students taking CREATIVE CORE classes are from all sorts of programs and majors, so you are able to see the different ways people approach problems. Last semester, I took a 3D Design Creative Core course. Each project we did was with a different medium: foam core, clay, acrylic, wood, and cardboard. It was very exciting to be able to learn how to use materials that I wouldn’t normally use.” —Katherine Patus

APPAREL MERCHANDISING (B.S.)

PASSIONATE

COLLABORATIVE

We study the intersection of fashion and retail through courses on product development, branding, and more

We showcase our business savvy by engaging with industry innovators and leading-edge merchants

After graduation, I’ll be heading to a job at Crate & Barrel in Chicago, where I interned last summer. I would not have gotten the internship if it weren’t for all the relevant classes I took. In one class, we looked at the frustrations of online shopping —the clothes don’t look the way you thought or they don’t fit. We conceptualized an app for a virtual fitting room and showed it to a local retailer. “ —Abbey Kittaka

COMPREHENSIVE DESIGN (B.S.) BOUNDARYBREAKERS

STUDIOINTENSIVE

We range across many fields, including interiors, architecture, public art, and the urban environment

We use design-thinking to find strategic solutions to problems large and small

Pretty much as long as I can remember, I’ve liked to build things and design things. But I didn’t want to limit myself by going into a specific design field right away. Comprehensive Design gives you a very solid, broad foundation and then you can worry about specialization later.” —Henry Levesque

We learn to master the very latest design and digital drafting software: AutoCAD, Revit, and Rhino

Project by Seul Kim and AnnaJean Pittman from the Advanced Design Studio course

I did an internship at the IU architect’s office. It definitely pushed me further into understanding interior design and materials. Now I want to be a licensed architect and an interior designer. I just learned I’ve been admitted into IU’s new masters of architecture program next fall!” —Stacy Hardy

There’s a stigma that if you go to art school, you’ll have a hard time finding a job. But I always had an interest in business too. I minored in merchandising so that when I was working as a creative, I’d have the baseline of a business education to solve problems for my client.” Now a creative manager for social media at Starbucks in Seattle, Suzie says, “My job is a mix of left and right brain. I like that it involves data and testing. It’s measurable and highly creative.” —Suzie Reecer

STUDIO ART (B.F.A.)

INTENSE

INDIVIDUALIZED

We are highly motivated artists with our sights set on an M.F.A or a creative career

We work side by side with faculty mentors in small classes and create a thesis exhibition before graduation

Work by Danni Xu

The B.F.A. program is structured, but it also allows people to broaden their horizons and pursue things on their own. We get guidelines and we are provided with all the opportunities and resources we need, but it’s understood that we are more driven and motivated, so we can develop whatever specific skill sets we want. We have immediate access to faculty to show them our personal work.” —Tommy DeNardo 24
