A VERSATILE LEARNIN G ENVIRONMENT:

LEARN IN G H U B

DATE: Fall 2013 CUSTOMER: Aalto University, School of Chemical Technology, Department of Forest Products Technology DESIGNED BY: Kreetta Airila, Marijke Davey, Sarah Nilles and Justyna Puchalska The task was to transform the existing library space at the Forest Technology building in Aalto University Otaniemi campus into an inspiring and versatile learning environment. The upgrade of the current department library to a new Learning Hub will benefit the students both in terms of study, but also pave the way for social interaction and group work. Aalto has an existing family of Learning Hubs, of which the Forest Technology Learning Hub will become a sibling, and will respond to the existing model that concerns itself with innovative, user-driven, multifunctional facilities. The existing library will be transformed into a brave new learning environment that will encourage study, whilst also providing the library with varying spaces to cater for many types of working conditions be it group work, individual work or discussion groups. Main challenges in this project were finding flexible use of the space, listening to the different needs of the clients and staff and staying in the budget.
