Q How long have you been in the jewelry industry?

A I started my jewelry career at the age of 13. It’s been 40 years! Throughout my career I’ve worked for many companies including Tiffany & Co. and Cartier.

Q How did you decide to be a jeweler?

A Because of the economic hardship in the country I grew up in (Guyana). When I was 13 it was either go to the sugar factory and harvest sugar cane (Laborer) or find a trade to support my family. I was lucky enough to get an apprentice job in the local jewelry shop.

Q Would you say you have a specialty in one area?

A No one can call themselves an expert jeweler. Everyday the technology is changing. I love learning all the new things in jewelry making.

Q Was there ever a time you were really challenged to complete a design? & what design are you most proud of so far?

A Yes, there are many times when I am challenged but eventually I figure it out because of my knowledge and so many years of experience. I am most proud of this bracelet I designed and handmade for myself!

Q As jewelry designs evolve and change, what inspires you now?

A I don’t follow any designers or get inspired by them. I get inspired by the customers and their vision. My job is to make them happy. So, I get inspired to hear what they want and bring it to life. I never realized how many people have sentimental pieces that are so important to them. With the new technology, I can keep the integrity of the original piece. Being able to restore their jewelry that maybe someone said can not be fixed is my greatest passion. That is what makes me happy. I can always figure something out. I didn’t learn from books, I learned from trying.
