Terms and conditions apply 1. Name: Kolanie van Baalen 2. What is your handicap? 9 3. How long have you been playing Golf? I started playing on and off from October 2011, but only one round every two weeks or so. Since March 2013 I’ve been taking my golf a lot more serious and my first tournament I played was in April 2013 and was the Sanlam South African Stroke Play Championship held at Pretoria Country Club which is kind of one of the biggest tournaments of the year for an amateur golfer. So in my head I’ve only been playing for about two years now. 4. Who got you into playing Golf? My dad and my brother and the ladies of Koro Creek Golf Estate 5. Who is your favourite golfer?

Adam Scott

6. Where are you currently a member at? Koro Creek Golf Estate in Nylstroom, Limpopo 7. Which is your favourite golf course? Mmm… tricky question, its either my home club Koro Creek or Wingate Park Golf Course. 8. What has been your most embarrassing moment on the golf course? Well it is embarrassing telling you this, but way back when I just started playing, Koro Creek asked me to play for them in their ladies league team and I was so extremely nervous I hit 3 consecutive “freshies” on the first hole! 9. What is your definition of success? My definition of success in golf, is setting yourself a goal and practicing until you achieve that goal. January/February 2014

HEALTH & LIFESTYLE 10. What do you hope to achieve in the coming years? I truly love this sport and I really want to become a professional golfer one day. So my goal is to raise funds for coaching, because till now I’ve not had one golfing lesson at all, and also for the entry fees and traveling fees for all the tournaments I need to play all around South Africa in 2014. 11. Any superstitions? For some reason when I tee off and putt, my ball needs to face me so that I can see the name and so that the clubface doesn’t hit any printings but only clear white ball. And my tees that I carry with me, the short hole tees are always wood tees and small and are always in my left front pocket and the longer ones are always bright plastic ones that don’t brake easily and are in my front right pocket along with my pitch repairer. 12. Favourite Movie: Forrest Gump 13. Three things I can’t live without: Well you said THINGS, not people, because I love my family. But 3 things: My mobile phone, my sunglasses and my car. 14. My guilty pleasure: Sleeping very late without setting an alarm to wake me up! 15. My favourite food: Pasta, Pizza, Steak and Sushi 16. Happiness is: waking up and knowing that I’m going to see my 3 best friends and we’re going to play some golf that day! 17. Get me a plane ticket to: To Scotland. I need to play The Old Course at St. Andrews! It’s on my Bucket List! 18. Someone I look up to: Kim Williams. She is totally going to kill me when she reads this but she is my local hero, very good friend and an amazing person 19. I’m not embarrassed to say: that it is truly my wish to become a professional golfer! The sooner the better! 20. Favourite quote: Don't take life too seriously; you'll never get out of it alive. If you can't win, make the one in front of you, break the record. Season Six If you would like to be considered as a SA Golf Trader “Golfing Gal” please submit three colour photo’s of yourself on the golf course and one photo of your choice to neville@sagolftrader.co.za. One girl per edition will be chosen by us (the editors decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into). The winner will be the girl who receives the most emails. The competition will be over six editions and closes on 31/08/2014. If you are selected by us you will have to answer the questions that SA Golf Trader puts to you. January/February 2014

WINNING LETTER To the editor As someone who regularly bets on sports outcomes, I thought that I would offer your readers my views on betting on golf. Firstly it is very important to gather as much information about the players and the game itself to boost your chances of winning. Also, there are a couple of pointers that you might want to focus on. They include remaining patient throughout the tournament, studying the statistics, and examining the course where the tournament will be played.

Professional golfers are very familiar with certain golf courses and you should take note of them before placing a bet. Also, it would be best to bet a minimal amount if the players will play on a particular course for the first time. This is because strange things tend to take place if golfers play on a course that has a different layout and landscape.

There are also many other sources of information that you can check out to make sure that you have everything you need to place a bet that has a high Numbers play an essential role when it comes to golf chance of winning. From Internet sites to mobile betting. It is essential to check out official statistics point spread app’s, there are so many tools out there and disregard the opinion of other bettors. Dear Selwyn Thank you for writing in. Yes a lot of people I know like to take a flutter every now and then. Knowledge of the rules of the game, the environment and the competitors is obviously essential. Modern technology certainly makes loads of data instantly available to us – does this make betting any easier? No, but it certainly increases interest in the game. Regards

Better vision = better golf A new series brought to you by Sir Nic Rose (Dip-Optom(SA)FOA(SA)Wits 1976)

Golf is an extremely demanding visual sport Sir Nicholas Rose has spent the last 2 months investigating a multitude of sports specific, off-the-shelf sunglasses, some better than others... One very unique product, which is not available from your local sunglass shop, stands far above the rest!

A golf ball travelling away from you on a long drive requires excellent vision to be able to track and follow its path and landing. Besides the requirement of being able to see it as it gets smaller and further away, you have the added difficulty of it blending with the colour of the sky, clouds and the green of the grass as it travels. Tracking the ball is actually similar to a visual acuity test. As the ball travels further away it gets smaller and more difficult to see. 6/6 or better is essential to follow its course.

mium product, up till now not available in South Africa.

Evaluating the contour and topography of the course is also essential and generally not easy with natural eyesight.

Well, the Carl Zeiss Golfing Professional High Definition, High Contrast Sunglass arrived for the very first time in South Africa late last month and we have spent all week testing them to give you a solid professional opinion.

In my hunt for the perfect pair of high contrast golf specific sunglasses, I discovered that Carl Zeiss, one of the world’s top optical companies offers a pre-

These lenses, manufactured to Europe's highest quality standards are simply "Mind Blowing and unparalleled".

What they do: Blue light present in normal sunlight overlaps and mutes other colours in the visual spectrum thus hampering your ability to determine contrast. Speciality filters used in the Carl Zeiss golf lens eliminate this blue overlap thus giving you exceptional high contrast and enhanced visual definition. When you put them on all colours become brighter and clearer. The brain actually initiates a colour shift program to accommodate the new filters and as you watch everything actually becomes incredibly clear and contrasting. It is hard to believe that this is possible without seeing it for yourself. The lens tint intensity is specially formulated to be just the right darkness for sunny and cloudy golf days too. If you have ever tried playing in a 90% sunglass tint you will appreciate what I mean - the minute there is shade you have to take your sunglasses off to see clearly. Not so with these, you just keep wearing them whatever the weather. One player who tried them asked me if wearing them was not cheating! I replied, “certainly not" as they are actually still classed as sunglasses. Take them off and it's like someone has switched the lights off! To summarise, this is what they achieve /provide: Significantly enhanced contrast Greens become highlighted and more defined and contrasting allowing you to see the exact contour of the green in front of you. The direction of growth on the putting green is easily seen and slight deviations in slope are easily recognized. The white of the ball is highlighted both against green and the blue of the sky and even against clouds allowing you to follow the path of the ball on a long drive.

order to have the highest optical quality and distortion free transmission values. Such highly specialised coatings are not often found on sunglasses but more usually seen on untinted prescription spectacles as it is essential for night vision and proper HD vision for computers. A little known fact is that without this coating on sunglasses the reflections actually double. Double the reflections means that vision is disturbed exponentially reducing clarity. Complete UV Protection UV impacts on an unprotected eye resulting in a chemical change in the lens of the eye where clarity is lost. My own personal clarity score went down by 5% per year until I started protecting my eyes correctly. Proper UV protection is an essential ingredient. Unparalleled optical quality which translates to superior vision. A patient of mine told me how he has to aim 30 cm to the left of the hole when putting. This is called prism shift and can occur when you are wearing an older pair of spectacles. The new design of the Zeiss golf lens will take care of this problem. The "pincushion" effect with high minus prescription spectacles can also be eliminated completely. A professional lens product that is completely customisable The Zeiss golf lens uses the latest digital optimised freeform distortion free technology and can be customised for your particular needs: either as a zero prescription, in your own distance prescription or even further customised in a sports multifocal design. The lenses can be fitted into virtually any frame

Welcome - class of 2014! So, you've had your downtime, chilled over the festive season with friends, family and loved ones, reflected back on your 2013 season, created closure with it and then just got away from it all :-) aybe you wanted to pull a sneaky on the rest of the pack, taking a few days off around Christmas and New Year but trained hard, ate responsibly, wanting to jump out early on in the season to a hot start establishing the platform to achieve your goals?

Whatever your reason for doing what you did or didn't is all okay :-) There are no formulas, no right nor wrong way. All you have to do is listen to your voice of reason, consult with your trusted support structure and make the best decision for yourself going forward :-) everyone is unique, every situation different.

There has been many a talented player quit before that impending moment of positive change, many a moment where mediocre players rise up above the rest where against the odds, through a positive outlook on life and perseverance, surprise us all ;-)

Sometimes with your best intentions things work out and sometimes they don't. There are

right amount of work into their game on a holistic level and focusing on specific areas that need priority. These players also understand the difference between a training or playing phase and phase into and out of technical work where it doesn't impact on their competitive play. In the balanced individual there lies a calm centre, a sense of knowing, knowing what they want and what it takes to get there. In essence this is all that matters. It's not up to anyone else to know. It's all up to you but what with your support structure being 100% behind you, believing in you, operating only through a point of positivity and affording you the financial platform to grow in the game, only then may it be possible for success. There is no place for negativity. Negative thoughts are 100% effective :-( One thing is for certain ;-) nothing in life is GUARANTEED! The game as a reflection of life gives and takes as it does. There will be times when with your best intentions and efforts to control your physical, mental and Spiritual Being things don't work out but the resilient, optimistic character always has a greater chance at finding moments of success. Those brief moments are all it takes to make the journey worth while. The joy between a river of tears. Because success is so rare in this game and relative to each individual, find moments in your life, even none golf related, that offer a sense of success and enjoyment. Even just the mere fact of waking up on each given day, brushing your teeth like a champion or that great drive you smoked down the 14th, acknowledge the good things you do. Success builds success :-) In the context of time life is short, as is a shot gone in the blink of an eye, so to a round of golf,

The game is a reflection of life :-) when we tee-off it is like birth, when we finish it is like death and how we handle the ups and downs along the way are the measure of the man or woman :-) The nice thing about golf is we get another chance to discover ourselves and grow as individuals every time we peg it up ;-) Enjoy the journey, be accountable to no one, be professional in what you do and just allow your true ability to reveal itself along the way.

This will be my last mental or inspirational article for a while. The journey will now be on more advanced scoring techniques around the greens. So let's enjoy the journey together. Check out www.gap2success.co.za for more info :-)

Indwe Risk Services renews Senior golf sponsorship Indwe Risk Services have signed a three-year extension to their sponsorship agreement of the SA Golf Association’s senior amateur golf. The short term insurance broker have been a partner to the senior amateur golf circuit for nearly a decade as the title sponsor of their two flagship events, the Indwe Risk Services South African Senior InterProvincial and Indwe Risk Services Senior Amateur Open Championship. Indwe's executive director of marketing, Joe Szemerei, explains that the partnership dates back to 2005. “The initial agreement was with Prestasi Brokers in 2005, and we continued our association with senior amateur golf after the company merged with Thebe Risk Services and re-launched as Indwe Risk Services. “We have enjoyed a successful partnership with the seniors for nearly a decade and we are extremely proud to continue sponsoring their two national championships,” says Szemerei. "The benefit of the continued sponsorship is the association value for the company. There is a considerable upside for us as established sponsors, in that we can continue to build a brand that has already been established over the last six years. As the partnership expands and grows, the seniors become more associated with our brand with each event that we host and sponsor.” January/February 2014

A traditional Country Club - that is Wingate Park Country Club! Wingate Park Country Club is a Country Club in the true sense of the word. Private, and offering a variety of recreational sports facilities. Situated in Moreletapark on the eastern side of Pretoria, Wingate offers golf, tennis, bowls and road running. They can cater for weddings, parties and business functions and the clubhouse offers privacy and a stunning outlook.

S

teeped in history, Wingate Park CC was founded in July 1947. Named after MajorGeneral Orde Wingate, Wingate Park CC was originally a Jewish club where all persons were welcome regardless of their position or creed. Initially offering riding, tennis, bowls, cricket and swimming, the golf course was opened in April 1951. Desiree Stone has been working hard to bring the traditions and history of the club to the fore. Trophies and memorabilia that were stashed away for decades have been unearthed and are now being displayed. Desiree has always added the so called x-factor to clubs that she has managed and it looks like she is set to do the same at Wingate Park CC.

Wingate is not the longest track in the country but don't be fooled by this, accuracy is a must of the tee and with some of the best putting surfaces around its important to leave yourself in the right areas on the greens. It comes as a big surprise to see that Wingate is not rated in the top 50 in the country as the course is superbly manicured throughout the year and their clubhouse facilities are fantastic. It gives you the feeling that this club has a lot of history and tradition which only comes with time. They have a fully stocked pro-shop with Shane Hayes as their resident P.G.A. professional who is available for coaching, playing lessons, repairs and club fittings. Golf carts can be hired and qualified caddies are available to make your golfing experience all that much better. Wingate takes one back to a period of traditionalism and offers a Country Club experience that only time can bring about. We wish Desiree and her team all the best in their endeavours at Wingate Park CC. 20

Madiba Magic yields two 59s in Nelson Mandela Championship When the sun finally came out over Mount Edgecombe during the Nelson Mandela Championship it shone down on a ninth and 18th green that within 30 seconds witnessed European Tour history. Spain’s Jorge Campillo and South Africa’s Colin Nel both shot rounds of 59 – the first in European Tour history – in the second round of this weather-affected tournament. They finished within seconds of each other, Campillo first and moments later Nel. Both will not go down as official records on the European Tour because both were scored on a Course One reduced to a par-70 because of a waterlogged fifth fairway and both were scored using preferred lies. But both still had to be scored, and for this they remain an incredible achievement. In 2009, Peter Karmis shot 59 in the final round of the Sunshine Tour’s Lombard Insurance Classic on his way to victory at the Royal Swazi Sun Country Club. It remains the only official 59 in Sunshine Tour history. 24

e were fortunate to spend a couple of days on the estate in one of their luxury, state of the art, self catering houses situated on the bank of the river, and experience what the estate and area has to offer. Being only an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, Vaal de Grace is ideally situated for a weekend or short break away from the busy city life to come and relax. This estate offers far more than just the golf. It features a host of natural fauna, including a large variety of bird species, impala, springbuck and more. Moreover with an abundance of yellow fish (small and large mouth) it offers some of the best fly fishing I have come across. So don't forget your tackle box. 26

The course itself is not the longest, measuring 6403m from the club tee's, with lots of dog legs and some short drivable par 4's for the long hitter, but then again accuracy is of big importance. It requires good course management due to the doglegs, large bunkers and of course the river. The tees are in fantastic condition and the bent grass greens are some of the best putting surfaces I have played on, and good reading of them will be rewarded. With the lack of rain during spring and early summer the fairways and surrounds are a bit dry but hopefully with some good rain forecasted for the next month or two the course will be in superb condition again in no time.

The Estate is only a couple of kilometers from Parys, which in itself is a special little town. The area surrounding Parys is distinctive in that a Table Mountain sized meteor struck the earth nearby some two thousand million years ago – leaving an indent called the Vredefort Dome, the biggest and oldest of its kind in the world. Consequentially, the impact resulted in a rare array of geomorphological shapes and flora and is a huge tourist attraction. Parys also features an array of antique shops and art galleries. There are eating places and restaurants galore, eateries with chairs facing the broad street, tables under giant spruce and oak trees… Funnily enough, one of the town’s top eateries is right on the estate, an ideal spot for a sundowner after a hard day’s golf or shopping from the lady's point of view. . . Not too far down

stream, there is also some spectacular whitewater rafting, quad biking, skiing (believe it or not) and lots more for the outdoor adventurer on offer. Proper planning during your stay at Vaal de Grace is imperative as there is so much on offer. Most of the houses are riverfront units with fantastic views. Ideal for a fourball or two or three or four couples where the guys can play some golf and maybe fish a bit and the ladies can explore this quaint little town. Here you will have time and space – to play and to relax, yet to be in the midst of a special kind of beauty and grace… Vaal de Gráce Golf Estate is decidedly the ideal break away destination, be it permanently or transient.

LET joy for Williams and Dlamini World number six Dlamini reeled in four birdies at the challenging Samanah course at Golf Al Maaden in Marrakesh, but a bogey at the final hole cost the Swazi golfer a joint second place. Nevertheless, the reigning Sanlam SA Stroke Play champion signed off with an impressive 69 for a 90-hole total of four-under-par 356 that vaulted her from an overnight share of 17th to joint fourth on the final leaderboard. Meanwhile seventh ranked Williams overcame a few hiccups early in her round to close out a dream season during which the 27-year-old Pretoria golfer won the Sanlam SA Amateur Match Play and reclaimed the top spot in the Womens Golf South Africa Senior Rankings. “Q-School is a real rollercoaster of emotions and it’s hard to put into words just what a mental challenge this week has been. I was gutted after missing last year and I wasn’t even sure I would come back. But I had a really good season, so I decided to give it one more try.” Williams was tied for ninth going into the final round and knew it would be a mental, rather than physical battle she faced. But while Williams and Dlamini will be celebrating their success, Williams spared a thought for fellow amateur Nicole Garcia, who missed the top 30 cut-off by just two shots. Bredenhann, who turned pro at last year’s QSchool, carded a closing 73 to tie for 27th and January/February 2014

The African quartet will join regular LET campaigners Lee-Anne Pace, Ashleigh Simon, Connie Chen, Stacy Lee Bregman, Tandi von Ruben, Morgana Robbertze and Laurette Maritz in Europe next year, while Williams, Dlamini and Garcia will also make their professional debut in South Africa on the Sunshine Ladies Tour in February.

Central Gauteng crowned SA Junior IPT champs The junior side looked great on paper and was among the favourites to challenge ahead of this year’s national championship, yet they didn’t make their presence felt until they pulled together for a superb turnaround victory against hosts Western Province in the fourth round. “This match was a lot closer than it looks on paper, but I have to commend every player on the team for the way they pulled together and played for each other,” said manager Andy Truluck.

SPECIAL FEATURE – CELEBRITY GOLFER PROFILE

Where were you born and which schools did you attend? I was born in Veereniging, I moved down to Durban at the age of 2 and attended Atholton Primary School in Umhlanga and then Durban High School and matriculated in 2007. I am currently studying through UNISA and busy completing a BCOM in I&O Psychology. At what age did you start swimming? Until the age of 4 or 5 I was terrified of the water so I only really began swimming training at the age of about 9. Where you coached from a young age? Yes I have been with the same coach since I started swimming competitively at the age of 11. I train at Kings Park Swimming Pool in Durban under the guidance of Alistair Hatfield. You compete in the 400 meters individual medley; do you favour a particular stroke? The 400 meters individual medley is 100m of each stroke but I do prefer the Freestyle and Backstroke legs, the Butterfly is one of my weaker legs. You were at the 2012 Olympics in London, what was that like? The London 2012 Olympic Games was an incredible experience and one that I will remember for a very long time, it was amazing to be able to be a part of something so spectacular. 36

What I enjoyed the most was seeing all the big names we hear about on TV and to be in the same dining hall having lunch/ dinner with them sitting a couple of tables away. I also enjoyed watching the Men’s tennis final in the Wimbledon stadium. Briefly what does it take to be a top-class swimmer? A lot of hard work and dedication and putting in at least 3-5 hours of swimming every day from a fairly young age. How important is genetics? I believe genetics do give people an advantage but out on the field the athlete who has worked the hardest and has the will to win generally does. Who would you call the best swimmer ever? I would have to say Michael Phelps, he has achieved so much in his career and to be able to be in such good form for almost 15 years is truly amazing. Do you swim in the ocean much? Yes I enjoy the feeling of being out in the open as opposed to staring at the white line at the bottom of the pool! What are South Africa’s future prospects like in the swimming department? There are a few good swimmers coming up and I think South Africa will have a few medal contenders at the Olympics in Rio 2016 but more so in the 2020 Olympics.

AFFORDABLE GOLF – GARDEN ROUTE

Why Mossel Bay? Because: Garden Route Why is Mossel Bay the perfect investment, golf, and holiday destination? Well, the people of the town have always known that this is because it’s on the Garden Route – and now the people of the world are beginning to see it, too. “We were incredibly excited when we heard that the Global Golf Tourism Organisation, IAGTO, had named the Garden Route its Golf Destination of the Year for Africa, the Indian Ocean and the Gulf States,” said Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm. She checked a little, and added: “Not to sound too smug about it, but we nodded our heads knowingly.” Mossel Bay, she said, boasts 60 km of sandy beaches and year-round beach and golfing weather. “It’s safe and affordable; it’s got some of the best health care and educational facilities in the Cape; and it’s easily accessible because it’s less than 40 minutes from the George airport, and it’s just 400 km from both Cape Town and Port Elizabeth on the N2. “But, especially for golfers, these facts paint just part of the picture, because Mossel Bay is also where you’ll find Louis Oosthuizen’s home course, the Mossel Bay Golf Club, and the Pinnacle Point Beach and Golf Resort – which must be two of the friendliest clubs in the country. And it’s within a short drive of at least a dozen other desirable courses like Oubaai, Fancourt, George, Kingswood, Knysna, Pezula, Simola, Plett, and Goose Valley.” Ms. Holm pointed out that Oubaai is an Ernie Els course - and that The Big Easy won this year’s IAGTO Honourary Award, which the organisation describes as a ‘tribute to the achievements of one extraordinary individual.’ 38

But, she said, golf isn’t the only activity in the area – strange as this might seem. “Mossel Bay calls itself the ‘Do stuff destination’ for solid reasons, and its unique confluence of sea, sand, mountains, fynbos, culture, and modern facilities makes it a playground of epic proportions. “So whether you’re into adrenalin sports like surfing, diving, skydiving or flight training – or whether you prefer more relaxed activities like whale watching, birding, or even just doing nothing in an especially beautiful environment – it really does offer almost everything we South Africans love when we’re at leisure. “And to complement all this – it’s got a full diary of entertainment and sport,” said Ms. Holm. Events for Q1 of 2014 include the Dias Festival (www.diasfees.co.za - from the 30th of January to the 2nd of February); Proe Mosselbaai (www.proemb.co.za) - the town’s annual culinary celebration, which will run from the 28th of February to the 2nd of March; and the Christianthemed Arendsfees (www.arendsfees.co.za: 18 to 20 April). FANCOURT’S MAN BEHIND THE LINKS GOLF CLUB Tyrone Farrell (31) is Manager of The Links Golf Club at Fancourt, South Africa’s leading golfing and leisure destination on the Garden Route. Since taking up the reins in 2012, his personal approach has strengthened this exclusive club’s ranking among the country’s best, and enriched the unforgettable golfing experience offered at The Links golf course – the prized jewel among Fancourt’s trio of awardwinning courses.

Although he is a self-proclaimed traditionalist, his penchant for introducing fine touches to enhance the overall experience has made him a firm favourite among members. ‘My main focus is to create a warm and hospitable environment, where members enjoy spending time before and after a round on the golf course. Along with this, they need to feel cared for at all times’, he said. Born in Pretoria, Farrell spent much of his childhood in the coastal town of Knysna in the heart of the Garden Route, and his family still run their very successful coffee roasting business ‘Espresso Concepts’ from here. he Volvo Golf Champions, The European Tour’s season-opening ‘Tournament of Champions’, will return for the second consecutive year to the Province of KwaZulu-Natal and will once again be played at the magnificent Durban Country Club, from 9th to 12th January 2014, with an increased prize fund reinforcing the Championship’s position as one of the most prestigious tournaments on The European Tour International Schedule. Memberships are now open at Durban Country Club (DCC), recently voted one of the Top 100 golf courses of the World by Golf Magazine USA and they have some really attractive options available, consider the fact that they have two courses, DCC & Beachwood which are both in fantastic condition. They have no entrance fees, monthly memberships and free golf options to golf members and I must stress that visitors are most welcome. South Africa is hosting no fewer than eight tournaments in the 2014 Race to Dubai. Durban Country Club as mentioned hosting the first, the 2014 Volvo Golf Champions. There are approaching 500 courses of every variety dotted throughout South Africa’s vast and very beautiful landscape. They exist not just in quantity but in quality, a testament to which is the fact that they will be home to more European Tour events in 2014 than any other country.

Stressed‌‌who me? We are at the time of the year when just about every Superintendent either loose some hair or keep all their hair but gain a few grey hair along the way!

K

eeping a course in good condition during periods of high temperatures and higher rounds takes some effort from the maintenance team and one wrong move can set you back for weeks with regards to conditioning of the course. Greens are usually the focus point on the course when it comes to keeping the perfect surface all year round, and greens are also usually the first surfaces that take strain with regards to heat stress and higher traffic over a smaller surface area.

There are many products on the market to help alleviate stress on greens, and I have tried many. The most success I have had was with the Aqua aid range of products. These are quality products that gives you what you pay for, the golden rule is just to stay with the program all year round, this will ensure that the applications gets cheaper as you go along. You can contact Jenna Hattingh from TurfNetwork SA for more info on the Aqua Aid range (082 467 8527).

Ways to manage heat stress is by cooling the greens down on regular intervals during the day without disturbing the golfers on the course, we call this a light syringe cycle. This is the process where water gets put down on the surface by means of the sprinklers next to the greens in short bursts, basically one turn of the sprinkler or by means of staff manually cooling down the greens with a hosepipe and nozzle. Specialized products such as wetting agents in the form of tablets or liquid formulations can be applied to the soil through special applicators and in this way keep the soil moist through days with high temperatures. The goal at the end of the day is to have a consistent moisture level through the entire profile of the soil, this will also create a consistent root depth and will ensure a uniform and stress free grass surface. 54

Other products that can almost be seen as must have products are “Greenstim” from Nan Turf, they also have a wide range of products and they will give you expert advice on programs that will take you and your course through the year without a glitch. Call Ockert Fourie @ NanTurf (044 690 4428).

Insects….. You can either employ a group of people to monitor your insect movement (Very expensive) or use an insect catcher, this device attracts insects with light at night and collects them in a tray at the bottom, this way you can see what insects are on the move during the year and spray preventative insecticides with the information that you have. It is very important not to spray any pesticides if you have not got proper reason to do so! Insects can build up resistance to certain insecticides due to over use of certain products and most of all think about the environment before you spray without reason.

NEWS CLIP

Dawie makes his own magic for Madiba title It was always going to be a special week. But Dawie van der Walt had no idea it would be this special. With a final round of 66, Van Der Walt won the Nelson Mandela Championship presented by ISPS Handa on a 54hole total of 15 under par at Mount Edgecombe CC last month. He finished two strokes clear of Matthew Baldwin and Jorge Campillo, and claimed his second victory on the European Tour this year after winning the Tshwane Open early in 2013. With his victory he also won the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit, overtaking Darren Fichardt in the final tournament of the season. It was an incredible finish to a year which began so promisingly for him when he won his first European Tour event, and which then hit rock bottom in the middle when an ankle injury combined with poor form for the worst few months of his career. Van Der Walt came into this tournament hoping to just find his game and play half decent golf. And as has been the case with the entire country, he found a world of inspiration in chasing a title that, finishing on the eve of the state funeral of Nelson Mandela, will always be a historic one. “This is so small compared to what Nelson Mandela did,” Van Der Walt said. “But it makes it a little more special. You can win the Nelson Mandela Championship in 10 years time, but this one will always be a special one.” 56

Bosch Hoek Golf Club

– Setting New Standards A trip to the KZN Midlands cannot be considered complete without a round of golf at Bosch Hoek Golf Club; we reviewed Bosch Hoek some three years back and found it then to be a fantastic 9-holer designed around lakes, dams and streams. With an abundance of bird life and magnificent views of the indigenous bush on the surrounding hills, it was a fantastic day of golf.

A

rriving in the Midlands for this visit we discovered that Bosch Hoek has been in the process of a serious upgrade. Originally designed by Bob Grimsdell in 1963, who by then already had many highly acclaimed courses behind his name including the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington - East course, it was strictly private for many years. It was then launched as the Bosch Hoek Golf & Country Estate in 1990 and was made available to discerning golfers of the public. Bosch Hoek Golf Club is today owned by well known South African entrepreneur Ivan Clark and his vision is to have it be the finest 9-hole golf course in South Africa and ultimately one of the finest in the world. Golf Data and head designer Sean Quinn were called in for the redesign (Golf Data are one of the county’s leading golf course design, construction & maintenance companies) and a number of exciting and significant improvements have been made including newly laid Bentgrass greens.

Bob Grimsdell

The Clubhouse kitchen has also been extended and state of the art kitchen equipment installed. The Men’s and Ladies’ change rooms have been renovated and the Clubhouse Patio area has been enlarged and upgraded. We have been invited to the official opening which will take place early this year. It is with great anticipation that I look forward to returning to Bosch Hoek Golf Club. 58

Nottingham Road Brewing Company makes history Established in 1997, nestling in the shady grounds of the renowned Rawdons Hotel, in the heart of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, the Nottingham Road Brewing Company is making history. Nottingham Road Brewing Company is one of South Africa’s oldest craft breweries and up until now, has been distributing to local outlets and also in Johannesburg. The reason for the restricted distribution has been as a result of the need for refrigerated transport, given the fact that the ales and lagers delicate balance can be spoilt by exposure to heat and light. After intensive investigations and testing over a period of 6 months, Notties Brewery as it is affectionately known by beer lovers, is now offering 440ml canned beer. This is the first craft brewery in Africa to take this ambitious and costly move. Says Peter Dean, Rawdons Proprietor and visionary behind the brewery `From the start, we have worked with South Africa’s best brewers to produce our beer. The quirky names assigned to the beer – such as Pickled Pig, Whistling Weasel, Tiddly Toad and Pie Eyed Possum have added to their allure, however our secret truly lies in the fact that we use only the finest quality hops and purest spring water which we draw from our artesian well on the grounds. We have been very proud of the success of the brewery but equally frustrated that we could not get our beer `to travel’. Now that has all changed. We have already had orders coming in to produce beer from other breweries and to can it for them. This alone will be doubling our current production levels and with time and the ability now to sell our beer not only in South Africa but throughout the world, we have certainly achieved a long awaited milestone’. So here’s to making history – Cheers! January/February 2014

estled in the foothills of the Northern Drakensberg Mountains lies the picturesque 9-hole, 18-tee Amphitheatre Golf Course. Whilst playing on one of the best maintained golf courses in the Drakensberg, you can enjoy the panoramic views of the Amphitheatre and surrounding mountains.

On first sight this course is often misconstrued as a mashie course, but, as stated by many a player...this is quite a challenging course. They are affiliated to the SAGU and you can swipe your membership card and enter your score on the National Handicaps terminal at reception. Not only is it a great course, the rates are extremely reasonable to play; from R70 (for a resident) and R130,00 (non resident) for 9 holes and from R100 for 18 holes. They are a caddie-less course, but have golf carts and clubs for hire, as well as balls, gloves, tees, etc for sale in the shop. It is not essential to book, you can pitch and play, but should you require any further information (see their ad above). The course is situated on the Hlalanathi Berg Resort so one can enjoy a well deserved holiday with the course on your doorstep. Hlalanathi offers self-catering chalets from R600,00/chalet per day as well as caravan/camping sites from R90,00/adult per day. They also have a stay and play special where you can save 30%. Book for three nights or more (Sunday through to Friday morning, out of season only) and pay R250 per person per night sharing. Plus you pay for 9 holes and play 18. January/February 2014

Monks Cowl Golf Resort - A whole new experience! We last played Monks Cowl some three years ago, it was back then a fairly ropey 9-hole track with some basic accommodation. After hearing that the well known Gooderson Leisure Group had recently taken over and that big changes were afoot we contacted them so that we could go and see first-hand what was happening.

The resort is ideally situated in the Central Drakensberg approximately four hours from Johannesburg and two and a half hours from Durban, in the magnificent Champagne Valley, immediately next door to Champagne Sports Resort and adjoining the popular Cathkin Estate development.

We arrived after the fairly short drive from Durban and were instantly impressed with the new accommodation which is on the golf course, very spacious and with a flat screen TV and DSTV; I found myself lounging back catching up on the latest sporting action before dinner.

The original Friar Tuck restaurant is still there and to eat I had a generous portion of ribs whilst Louis had a superb rump steak. The staff were friendly and with the restaurant being quite on a Monday evening we chatted to them over a few drinks. All of them are really excited at the changes that have been made and say that the feedback from guests has been extremely positive. We then retired to our rooms eager for an early start and a round of golf the next morning. Mornings in the Drakensberg are always special and few things beat an early round of golf. The golf course is 9-holes with 18 tees and recent refurbishments were evident. With views to die for from practically everywhere and some really challenging holes Monks Cowl is a fantastic course which it always was however it just goes to show the difference that a few changes and proper maintenance can make.

A new swimming pool and a spa are scheduled for early this year and with so many nearby attractions (Drakensberg Boys Choir, Spioenkop Dam and Nature Reserve, Valley Bakery) Monks Cowl Golf Resort now offers the golfing enthusiast and the whole family an affordable fun filled getaway.

2014 to crown three years of consecutive growth for global golf tourism, predicts IAGTO

I

AGTO’s ground breaking global golf travel survey published last year showed that golf tourism grew by an average of 9.3% in 2012. According to the global golf tourism industry organisation, golf travel grew strongly once again last year and all the indications are that this trend will continue in 2014, which will then mark three years of consecutive growth. Speaking from Mexico’s premier golf destination of Los Cabos, IAGTO Chief Executive, Peter Walton, said today: “The vast majority of our 2,140 member golf resorts, golf courses, hotels and golf tour operators in 97 countries reported further growth in 2013 on the back of a strong 2012. Destinations as diverse as Spain, South Africa, Scotland, the Dominican Republic, Malaysia, Ireland, Abu Dhabi, Mexico, Portugal, Turkey and Thailand have all reported year on year growth. Our 520 golf tour operators in 62 countries are a good barometer for the coming 12 months and many have indicated that forward bookings for the first quarter of 2014 are looking healthy.”

travel bag out and heading to warmer, greener climes. So basically, a long warm summer followed by a cold and miserable winter should be good for the golf travel business!”

Walton added: “In very general terms, a long warm summer gets golfers out onto their local courses more often, lowering handicaps and increasing expectations, while a cold and unpleasant winter focuses their minds on getting the golf 78

“This demonstrates clearly the importance of a strong and sustainable golf tourism sector to the wider golf business community,” Walton added.

Commenting on the impact of golf tourism on golf course development, Walton said: “It was interesting to learn in the National Golf Foundation’s excellent and ongoing study* of golf courses

under development that approximately two-thirds of the 1,000 or so golf course projects outside of the USA in all phases (including under construction, in planning, in preliminary planning or on hold) are considered to be tourism related (resorts with golf courses, or real estate developments with golf courses that have a resort component).

The NGF report cites China’s Hainan Island PIC8 as an example of one of the golf travel destinations that is enjoying golf course growth and it is to

Haikou that IAGTO will be taking its 3rd Asia Golf Tourism Convention from 24-27 March this year. “Asia continues to be a driving force both as an outbound market of golf travellers and an inbound market of golf destinations. We can report today that the number of golf tour operator buyers registered for this year’s AGTC has already exceeded the total for last year’s successful event,” said Walton. “With more than two months to go, 152 buyers from 35 countries, all selling golf destinations in the Asia Pacific, have signed up to attend, which will undoubtedly make this year’s AGTC the most important international golf tourism event in the region with the total number of delegates expected to exceed 500.” Continued on p80

Born in Ashwood, Virginia, America in 1912, he passed away in 2002.

He won a record 82 PGA Tour events, including seven Majors. He never won the U.S. Open, though he was runner-up four times.

He was known for his silky smooth swing and tremendous length off the tee.

The son of a farmer, he grew up in the mountains of Virginia, where he hunted and fished and caddied at a local resort.

Growing up in poverty led to one of his classic lines: "Keep close count of your nickles and dimes, stay away from whiskey and never concede a putt."

Although he didn't practice as much as his peers, he understood the value of it, which was summed up by another memorable quote of his: "Practice puts brains in your muscles."

He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974, and received the PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998. Answer on page 96

ON TOUR WITH TANDI

Tandi on Tour

Another season on the Ladies European Tour draws to a close and the new season will start with the co-sanctioned events in Australia from February 2014. My last two events for the year were the Hero Handa Ladies Indian Open which was held in New Delhi and the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters held at the Majalis course in Dubai. The event is India moved venue this year to the New Delhi Golf Club situated right in the city. The course was very challenging and narrow off the tee with “geehardy’s” running alongside the holes. These Geehardy’s are the local term for thick bush similar to that of Durban Country Club. The greens were firm, fast and true and made scoring low not always easy. 88

Tandi von Ruben tied 28th on +6

Stacy Bregman tied 54th on +12

Stacy Bregman made the cut but then had to retire.

Missing the cut: Tandi von Ruben and Laurette Maritz

The Omega Dubai Ladies Masters is always one my favourite events on the schedule on what I consider to be one of the best courses we play on tour. The rough this was thick and lush making accurate driving a premium. Hitting long irons and hybrids out of the rough was very difficult to control which meant that one’s short game had to be very sharp.

Lee Ann Pace was voted player of the year for the second time of her career for the 2013 season, well done Lee Ann! Both Ashley Simon and Lee Ann Pace attended the LPGA Tour School at the LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Florida. Ashley Simon successfully secured a full card and Lee Ann Pace secured a conditional card, missing out on a full card by 3 shots.

Ek hoor graag van julle by: andrecruse@worldonline.co.za of Cell: 082 990 7156. January/February 2014

LAUGH OUT LOUD

Laws of Golf LAW 1:

LAW 9:

No matter how bad your last shot was, you should have Inner Peace knowing that a worse one is yet to come. This law does not expire on the 18th hole, since it has the supernatural tendency to extend over the course of a tournament, a summer and, eventually, a lifetime.

The last three holes of a round will automatically adjust your score to what it really should be.

LAW 2:

All vows taken on a golf course shall be valid only until sunset.

Your best round of golf will be followed almost immediately by your worst round ever. The probability of the latter increases with the number of people you tell about the former.

LAW 3:

LAW 10: Golf should be given up at least twice per month.

LAW 11:

LAW 12: Since bad shots come in groups of three, your fourth consecutive bad shot is really the beginning of the next group of three.

Brand new golf balls are water-magnetic. Though this LAW 13: cannot be proven in the lab, it is a known fact that the more expensive the golf ball, the greater its attrac- It's surprisingly easy to hole a 50-foot putt when you tion to water. Expensive clubs have been known to be lie 8. partly made with this most unusual natural alloy.

LAW 14:

LAW 4: Golf balls never bounce off of trees back into play. If one does, the tree is breaking a law of the universe and should be cut down.

Counting on your opponent to inform you when he breaks a rule is like expecting him to make fun of his own haircut.

LAW 15:

LAW 5:

Nonchalant putts count the same as chalant putts.

The higher a golfer's handicap, the more qualified he deems himself as an instructor.

LAW 16:

LAW 6:

It's not a gimme if you're still 4 feet away.

A golfer hitting into your group will always be bigger than anyone in your group. Likewise, a group you accidentally hit into will consist of a rugby player, a professional wrestler, a convicted murderer and an IRS agent – or some similar combination.

LAW 17:

LAW 7:

There are two things you can learn by stopping your backswing at the top and checking the position of your hands: how many hands you have, and which one is wearing the glove.

All 3-woods are demon-possessed. Your Mother in Law does not come close.

Every time a golfer makes a birdie, he must subsequently make a double or triple bogey to restore the fundamental equilibrium of the universe.

LAW 18:

LAW 8: Golf balls from the same "sleeve" tend to follow one another, particularly out of bounds or into the water. See LAW 3. Answers: Ball 4, Sam Snead 96
