The 2014 United Fire Brigades’ Association National Drivers Challenge took place over the weekend of 19th and 20th July at Teretonga Park Raceway, Southland. More than seventy firefighters, put themselves through a series of tests including, backing a fire engine into a garage and completing a slalom course in the big red machine. In a competition where every move of the steering wheel counts, as most of the manoeuvres are measured to the inch. Local resident Tom Reid who has been a member of the Airport Fire Service for over thirty years, competed in the wee ken d eve nts . “ Th e weekend consisted of ‘infield’

June’s Rolleston Combined Probus speaker was J ens Christiansen, Christiansen a well know identity around Rolleston from his time on the Selwyn District Council and his involvement with the Industrial area of Izone. The group found it extrememly interesting to hear of all the development in the area. June also saw members enjoy a midwinter lunch at Rossendale in Tai Tapu with more than sixty members attending. At the beginning of July Rolleston Co m b i n ed Pr o bu s Cl u b celebrated their ninth birthday. The day was marked by the group hosting a ‘bring a plate morning tea’, with local Rotary President, Kingsley Clark in attendance as a guest. Entertainment for the birthday treat was supplied by Brian Ringrose, Ringrose a man who has spent most of his life entertaining, playing in bands and also making commercials. Brian not only played songs that the group could remember and sing along to, but also spoke about his life. Brian brought along with him his first guitar, purchased when he was a child. He jokingly

commented that he retains the guitar, “because it knows all the songs I likes to play!” At present thirty six members of the Club are on a much anticipated cruise to Noumea and around the Pacific. This is to be followed by a tour of Sydney. During July Club members enjoyed a trip to ‘The Movies’. This was held in a small (twenty

four person) private theatre, which plays the old classic movies. The next meeting is to be held on August 12th with guest speaker Colin Patterson, Patterson a farmer and poet from the Leeston area. Also during August the group will visit Kilmarnock Enterprises.

Men from Rolleston’s Men’s Shed have been busy over the last few months, with the completion of the shed built for the Rolleston Playcentre. The Men’s Shed members have also completed new jumps for the Dog Club. The Rolleston Men’s Shed, based in a temporary site on Brookside Road, aims to bring men together in one community space to share their skills, have a laugh, and work on practical tasks individually (personal projects) or as a group (for the Shed or community). The sort of projects a Shed tackles is entirely up to the Shed

concerned, however most Sheds around New Zealand take on som e com m unity projects, exam ples of which include building playgrounds for preschool centres, repairing toy library stock, repairing old bikes for distribution to poorer communities, building planter boxes for the main street of the local central business district, etc etc. As the Rolleston Men’s Shed is up to date with current projects, they would welcome contact from any community organisations in the Rolleston area who may have a sm all pr oj ec t ne e din g

completion, The Men’s shed will soon move to a new location; the site is currently being cleared and plans are being finalised. Members of the Rolleston Men’s Shed are looking forward to having their own permanent home. “Anyone who is interested in joining the Men’s Shed is more then welcome to pop in,” said Men’s Shed spokesperson, Neil Bennett. group is a Bennett “The very frie nd ly gr ou p an d only too pleased to help out where possible,” Neil added. “We can be contacted at rollyshed@xtra.co.nz,” he ended.

A Rolleston pre-schooler has beaten the odds to prove she can swim. Emma Bol ton has been attending swimming lessons at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre for the past ten months. The four-year old has mild cerebral palsy which affects the brain signals to her legs, but her mother Anna Bolton said, “she doesn’t let it hold her back, if anything it’s motivation to prove she can work through it.” Cerebral palsy is a permanent physical condition that affects muscle control and often cau s es p r o b l em s w i th movement, co-ordination and balance. It is the most common physical disability in children, occurring in one in every 500 babies. Before Emma started swimming she was unable to walk unaided and used a small walker to get around. Her parents were unsure if she would be able to walk unaided in future. Anna believes swimming, along with a Botox treatment to relax the muscles in her legs, has helped Emma learn to walk properly. “It’s amazing to see how far Emma has come since she first started taking lessons at the Aquatic Centre. Not only can she move freely in the water now, but she can happily run around out of the water too,” said Anna. As her strength and abilities have developed she has become more independent and a big part of her success has been through learning in small groups of three children of a similar age. “Emma is starting to balance

Four year old Emma Bolton swimming at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre. and co-ordinate herself to safely move in the pool, float on her front and back with assistance, submerge under water and learn breath control,” said Preschool Swim Supervisor Jenny Heaton. Heaton Anna said Emma is more confident in the water now and enjoys jumping off the side into the water with the other children. “She isn’t put off by a struggle so it’s refreshing to see her being treated like any other kid her age.” “I am thankful for what the pool has offered our family and I only hope that anyone who may be in the same position will consider using the pool too,” she added.

Swimming is a great form of exercise for all ages and abilities. It can also be beneficial to those who suffer from joint problems such as arthritis, and those recovering from an injury. Weight-bearing exercises such as running or jumping can stress the body, however swimming is a lowi m p a c t a ct i vi t y w h i ch em ph as is es g entl e an d repetitive motion. All of the pools at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre are accessible for people with disabilities and there is wheelchair access into the leisure, hydro therapy and lane pools. A hoist has also been installed by the spa pool to help people into the pool.

The Establishment Board of Trustees for the new Rolleston School, currently known as West Rolleston Primary School was officially appointed on April 15th. The trustees are, Simon McDermott as Chairperson, Rebecca Scott, Scott Sherryll Wilson, Wilson Kate Duncan and Denise Sheat as the representative of Te Taumata, the local Runanga. Trish Hann has joined the team as secretary/treasurer. The representative from the Ministry of Education is Linda Youl and the governance facilitator is Tom Scollard. Scollard Since the appointment the Board have been busy planning and meeting regularly in preparation for what will be an innovative and forward thinking new school. The Board will develop the school’s charter, architectural design and appoint

the principal and staff. The board will work with the school community to develop the vision for the school. The school which is planned to be open in January 2016, with construction through 2015 (green-field site), the school is anticipated to have a roll of up to seven hundred and fifty. Late last year, as part of the Rolleston education consultation process, feedback was gathered that has been used as a starting point for the development and preparation of the school and vision. The Board have been working closely with CORE Education further developing the vision which is an essential first step in the planning stage. It will be a school that has the ability to give students new opportunities and experiences. Further community feedback

and consultation will be sought throughout the process of developing this contemporary, modern learning environment. The Board also recognises the importance of working alongside the other schools in, and surrounding, Rolleston and will continue to support them along their journey.

Rebecka, who brings years of experience to the region, is now with Kirwee based company HHPM and working with a small committed team, led by Sue and Paul Robinson. INTEREST RATE ‘HIKES’ We have heard a lot from the media about interest rate hikes with the OCR steadily climbing from an all-time low of 2.5% back in April 2009 to the current 3.25%. Just to put this into perspective, 1.05% is hardly a ‘Hike’ and the difference for a $200,000 mortgage at 5% to 7% is about $60 per week. If rates climb to pre ‘90’s at around 20% then we can call that a ‘hike’! Similarly, “no lending over 80% LVR needs to be put into perspective. All banks are allowed to have 10% of their lending above this and so there is lending to be had over 80%. To qualify in this bracket you do need to have things in your favour, like a clean credit record, good income from full time employment and show stability in your living/employment situations. If you believe you fit these criteria then you stand a good chance of borrowing above 80%. Also new builds are exempt from the 80% limit and banks are lending up to 95% in some cases. If you want to own your own home, let’s talk and just see where you are at. It just may be easier than you think. Stay Warm!

of course is important, but also to ensure they look after your property as though it’s their own. Instead of taking the first person to enquire, we need to work with you to get the ‘right’ person,” Rebecka stressed. HotelHomes originated from the boutique holiday home market, focussed specifically on in-bound tourism during the Rugby World Cup. However post-earthquake in Christchurch quickly caused the business to evolve and it began specialising predominantly in furnished short term rental management for earthquake repairs. The recently established HHPM side of the company will specialise only in unfurnished long term property rentals led by Rebecka. “We ensure the homes are exactly that - homes for our tenants, not just bricks and mortar houses,” commented Managing Director, Sue. “We identified the need to grow and expand as currently the rental market is volatile and in constant flux - changing daily”. ‘We know that it’s vital that we are not only on top of market changes, but also forecasting and predicting future trends. BURGLAR A burglar broke into a house one night. He shone his flashlight around, looking for valuables when a voice in the dark said, 'Jesus knows you're here.' He nearly jumped out of his skin, clicked his flashlight off, and froze. When he heard nothing more, he shook his head and continued. Just as he pulled the stereo out so he could disconnect the wires, clear as a bell he heard 'Jesus is watching you.' Startled, he shone his light around frantically, looking for the source of the voice. Finally, in the corner of the room, his flashlight beam came to rest on a parrot. 'Did you say that?' he hissed at the parrot. 'Yes', the parrot confessed, then squawked, 'I'm just trying to warn you that he's watching you.' The burglar relaxed. 'Warn me, huh? Who in the world are you?' 'Moses,' replied the bird. 'Moses?' the burglar laughed. 'What kind of people would name a bird Moses?' 'The kind of people who would name a Rottweiler Jesus.'
