As people become increasingly health conscious and aware of the need to foster wellbeing, martial arts remains a popular choice for health and fitness. Proactive Templeton has been operating for ten years and is part of Christchurch's biggest network of Martial Arts’ schools. Opening in October 2004, they now have well over one hundred students ranging in age from four years old, to some students in their sixties. Proactive is a self defence based martial art suitable for all age groups, whether it is fitness, confidence, coordination or self defence it offers something for everyone. Rolleston resident Jacki Wollard has been involved with Proactive for seven years. Beginning as a white belt with no prior experience, she is now a 1st degree black belt. Along with training twice a week she also teaches students aged between seven and eleven, at

the yellow belt grade. Her daughter, Nicole aged 15, is involved with the Club too, and has been for approximately six years. Jacki initially joined for confidence and fitness, as well as the self defence aspect. Most Proactive members would agree that martial arts training is a great complement to their other sporting pursuits. Proactive have a number of teenagers training who find it really good for their core strength and co-ordination, which translates well for rugby, netball, football, hockey and even dance. Proactive Martial Arts owner Allister Sutherland, a 4th Dan Black Belt and his wife, Jacque, a 3rd Dan Black belt, both teach Martial Arts full time. Their three children have all obtained their Black Belts, with their daughter, who has been doing Martial Arts since the age of four, grading to her 2nd degree this month. Son, Matthew, Matthew has preferred to

go down the Kickboxing path and during November will represent New Zealand in Spain. Fundraising for his trip is currently underway and anyone who can assist should go to: Matthew Sutherland Give a Little. While most members train for pleasure, there are people interested in going in the ring for organised fights. The Club caters for these members by holding two fight nights per year. This began with just four Proactive clubs getting together but has now grown to include fighters from Clubs up and down the country. The last few Club Carnage fight events have been held at the Templeton Club venue and have been sell-outs weeks before the event. “They are a fantastic night and although a lot of hard work, they are also a lot of fun,” Jacque concluded. For more information about Proactive see the advertisement in this issue for contact details.

The concrete slab of the Men’s Shed, shed is now laid and looking impressive. The next stage is for the shed to be moved onto its foundation and for the final construction details to be completed. Once that happens members can set up and work on getting the new extension erected. Everyone is looking forward to being able to do some work inside over the colder winter months. It has been a long wait

but genuine progress is now being seen. The fundraising battery drive is going well and the collection continues for those who want to get rid of old car, truck, tractor and motor cycle batteries. Rolleston Men’s Shed extends thanks to Frank MacKenna for donating a full truck load of scrap metal which was most appreciated and also to Metalcorp for coming and picking it up.

On May 26th, 36 members of the Rolleston Combined Probus, were collected by bus for what was to be an extremely interesting day out. The Group’s host for the day was local body politician and broadcasting personality, Barry Corbett. Corbett An outstanding tram ride around Christchurch City stirred emotions and memories, complemented with a bus tour out and around Sumner. Everyone enjoyed the ride on the Gondola up to the Restaurant for lunch, the view being outstanding. There was plenty to see around the complex especially the six minute time tunnel ride which was a great experience -

The fifth Equestrian Rogaine to be held in Canterbury, raised over $2,500 for the GRACI Foundation (Gynaecology Cancer Research Trust). Held on hill farmland at Brooksdale near Springfield on June 14th, riders were fortunate to have a perfect day for the event. Teams of two to four on horseback, navigated with a map to score checkpoints marked on it. The teams had three hours to score as many points as possible, with each checkpoint having a different points value. The winning team of Heath Macfarlane, Macfarlane Sandra Tarrant and John Murphy successfully scored all twenty nine checkpoints, within the three hours. Jodie Lockwood and Nicole Bulford (Rolleston) were the first women’s team

and Sophia Roper and Chloe Bolingford (Governors Bay) were first junior women. Teams came from as far as Oamaru for the event and the youngest rider was eight-yearold Trent Marshall of Leeston. N ume rou s loca l Se lwyn businesses supported the event

The Men’s Shed has welcomed several new members recently and still encourages anyone who is interested to make contact. “It’s a great bunch of guys of all interests, so you should fit in and it’s a wonderful chance to get out of the house,” commented Chairman of Trustees, Neil Bennett. FINANCE FOR THAT NEW BUILD As new homes are exempt from the Reserve Bank’s 20% deposit requirement, new builds can be a good op on for the first home buyer, as you are also eligible for Homestart and Kiwisaver withdrawals if you and/or your partner have contributed to Kiwisaver con nuously for three or more years. HomeStart grants can be up to $10,000 per person ($6,000 a?er three years, $8,000 a?er four years) and can be used in conjunc on with all your KiwiSaver contribu ons (including employer contribu ons). You are now able to use your HomeStart Grants and Kiwisaver for deposit funds. So, if you are looking at a fixed price contract of say $500,000 including sec on, and you and your partner have contributed to KiwiSaver con nuously for five years, you would have: $20,000 HomeStart Grants plus $40,000 Kiwisaver Contribu ons (you would need to contact your KiwiSaver Provider to confirm how much you are eligible to withdraw). Required deposit 10% - $50,000. As you can see, this is well worth looking into, especially if you are struggling to save a 20% deposit – say $80,000 for a $400,000 home. You can do this by way of a “fixed price” contract whereby you get a fully priced contract from a registered Master Builder, and you pay on invoice throughout the build. You need to bear in mind that the bank will charge interest for these par al drawdowns which you need to pay on top of your exis ng rent. Or you can enter into a “turn key” contract where you pay a deposit and then nothing un l you move in. Repayments Principle and Interest on a fully drawn loan for a build of $500,000 less 10% deposit $50,000 - $450,000 over a 30 year term at 6% would equate to $622 per week.

The Rolleston Volunteer Fire Service emerged victorious from the United Fire Brigade Association’s South Island Road Crash Rescue Challenge (RCR) held in Cromwell over the weekend of June 6-7th. The RCR has become an extremely important event, mirroring the increasing number of road incidents Brigade volunteers are being asked to attend. The challenge provides an unique learning opportunity to practice rescue and medical response skills in true-to-life scenarios. Teams consist of six members; five Brigade members and one St John medic. Members had to race against the clock to extricate and treat patients in staged road crash situations, while being scored on their techni que s. T ea ms who participated in the South Island challenge came from Queenstown, Wanaka, Milton, Balclutha, Ranfurly, Geraldine, Leeston, Lincoln, Rangiora and Rolleston. “The idea of the competition is to simulate on-road events to challenge the teams to ultimately further enhance their skills. Those skills get taken back to the Brigades, which benefits the community,”

Challenge committee chairman Nigel Lilley of Rolleston, said. Rolleston won the event, with Milton second and Geraldine third. Milton won the trauma challenge, with Ranfurly second and Rolleston third. Rolleston will now join the winners of the North Island challenge, Hawera Volunteer Fire Brigade, to compete in the Australasian Rescue Challenge event, to be held in Alice Springs, in July. The competition was organised by the United Fire Brigades Association, with support from

St John, Free Ambulance Wellington and the Central Otago Motorsport Club. The Cromwell Volunteer Fire Brigade were proud to host the South Island challenge this year and were also heavily involved with organising the event. Preparation for the challenge was a huge undertaking, from sourcing scrapped cars to arranging for the volunteers required to set everything up with realism. But Nigel concluded that the event's value to the community was definitely unquestionably ‘worth it'.

Selwyn MP Amy Adams has welcomed figures from Chorus which show that the average internet speed in Selwyn’s rural areas has more than doubled thanks to the Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI). “The figures provided to me by Chorus show that the a ve ra ge coppe r lin e connection speed has increased from 3.9 Megabits per second (Mbps) in November 2011 to 8.9 Mbps in April this year,” Amy said. Amy, who is also the Minister for Communications, stated that some of the 3,360 broadband connections in the Selwyn RBI zones had achieved speeds of up to 71.0 Mbps. “That is an astonishing improvement when you consider that back in 2011, before the RBI was underway, the maximum connection speed was 8 Mbps,” she commented. Unlike Ultrafast broadband in towns such as Lincoln and Rolleston, which is delivered via fibre, the Chorus part of RBI is delivered by copper phone lines which have been upgrade d to provide significantly faster broadband. “41 out of 46 cabinets

BEAT THE MUD! Every year, Lincoln University offers students, who have acted as leaders in their school or community, the opportunity to develop their leadership skills while undertaking tertiary study. This year the Lincoln University Future Leader Scholars have organised a ‘My Town’ children’s design competition. The Future Leaders want to speak to children in Selwyn about putting forward their ideas for improving the towns and communities in which they

live. It may be a child’s school, club house, playground, park or in fact anywhere at all that they would like to see a plan implemented for. It’s a chance to get creative! The competition is open to teams comprised of up to six children, aged five to thirteen. In the lead up to the ‘My Town’ event, the Future Leader Scholars will work hands-on with each group, mentoring them to help develop their project and brainstorm ideas. It will then be

over to the group to create a proposal to present, ‘Dragons Den’ style, at a fun-filled ‘My Town’ event to be held at Lincoln University on September 11th. The winning group is expected to implement their project afterwards. There is no limit to how many groups can enter and entry is free. Closing date for entries is July 17th, 2015. For an information pack email: lend.a.hand.lu@gmail.com

Rolleston Netball Club (RNC) has had a successful round one of competition, with four of their teams placing first in their grade: Primary A, Primary D, Masters A and Rolly Razamataz. RNC is delighted with their results and is looking forward to even more tough competition in the rest of the second round. During the first round there

were representative selectors looking out for talent on the courts and many Rolleston girls got the opportunity to trial for Selwyn Netball Centre’s U19, U17 and U15. The RNC extends congratulations to all those that trialled. There was considerable talent for the selectors to choose from and as a result there were a few who narrowly

missed out on selection. Those who made it from Rolleston are: U19 - Dakotah Bishop, Dannii Malzard, Charlotte Robb and Hannah Wilson U17 - Hayley Hallinan, Te Rina Keno, Hannah Glassey, Kintea Thomson and Georgia Tuatini U15 - Katie Bryce, Lucy Glassey, Ruby Keno, Emma Bryce, Shaunagh Poutoa, Mikala Gillespie and Samara Northmore Primary are yet to have their trials. Mary Wiering - RNC Secretary concluded on behalf of the Club, “good luck to the girls for the upcoming tournaments and thank you to Rolleston community for your on-going support, especially to all our sponsors. Look forward to seeing you at the courts in the second round!” For more info on Rolleston Netball Club please see their website at: www.sportsground.co.nz/ rollestonnetball

A new anode is far cheaper than a new cylinder! WANTED

A couple were lying in bed together on the morning of their 10th wedding anniversary when the wife says, 'Darling, as this is such a special occasion I think that it is me I made a confession...... before we were married I was a hooker for eight years.' The husband ponders for a moment and then looks into his wife's eyes and says, 'my love, you have been a perfect wife for 10 years! and I cannot hold your past against you. Maybe you could show me a few tricks of the trade.” She said, 'Darling I don't think you understood me correctly, my name was Brian and I played rugby for Wales '
