The Selwyn Dog Training Club (SDTC), based in the Foster Dog Park, Rolleston, was formally established in 2004. Club members felt there was a need for a dog exercise facility in Rolleston and convinced the Selwyn District Council to establish the dog park. They played a key role in sourcing grounds, developing concept plans, and assisting with the provision of regulations for the Park. In 2009, the Club moved to its current home at Foster Dog Park. Selwyn Dog Training Club is one of the biggest, busiest, and most competitive clubs in the South Island. While their membership is predominantly from the Selwyn district, they do have members from as far away as Ashburton and North Canterbury who attend training regularly. The Club has over 100 financial members with an additional 80 or more people per year participating in community dog training

SDTC is also one of a limited number of clubs nationwide who are certified to run the New Zealand Kennel Club’s ‘Canine Good Citizen’ programme. Club members range in age from children to the elderly and all breeds of dogs (including mixed breeds) are catered for. SDTC owns the Clubhouse located at Foster Dog Park and they pay a lease to be based there. The Club’s volunteer instructors are all extremely experienced, knowledgeable,

Skin needling ..... What are you wai ng for? Probably you may have heard of this term and wondered what it is, how it works and the amazing results that can be achieved. Skin needling is also called micro-needling therapy or collagen induc on therapy.

It is a minimally-invasive nonsurgical and non abla ve procedure for facial rejuvena on that involves the use of a micro-needling device to create controlled skin injury. As each fine needle punctures the skin, it creates a channel or micro-wound. The controlled injury triggers the

Not just content with 36 years of serving the Barbering industry Chris Bradley decided the time was right to enter the Barber Craft Expo. This event was held in Auckland last year and saw Chris named as one of New Zealand’s top barbers. This result was just the catalyst Chris needed to further develop and expand his already successful enterprise - with the latest addition being that of setting up in Selwyn. His business has already doubled in size and created numerous employment opportunities for talented, up and coming staff and now locals can experience the Hair4Men expertise in the new South Point complex on Faringdon Boulevard, Rolleston. “Currently we have a mobile service in Geraldine, the main shop in Ashburton, employing several barbers, and now this new shop in Rolleston,” Chris explained. “We intend to have at

least four barbers operating full time and see this new retail complex, that already has a variety of shops, as being the ideal place for a top-class barber’s to be located.” Barber Craft comes up again in May and Chris is sharpening his scissors in preparation. Practise makes perfect and Chris would

body to fill these microwounds by producing new collagen and elas n in the lower levels of the skin where new growth occurs. This treatment leads to skin rejuvena on, i.e. improved skin texture, firmness and hydra on and fading of pigmenta on. There are various skin needling devices including rollers, stamps and pens. Needles are up to 2mm in length, and at ‘Affinity’ we use the very popular pen op on as recovery is fast and the depth of needle can be adjusted as required, by your therapist, to ensure safety, recovery speed and of course the best results. Professional skin needling is considered to be one of the safest skin treatment procedures. Unlike chemical peels, dermabrasion and laser treatments, skin needling causes minimal damage to the skin. What is skin needling effec vely used for? • Reducing scars caused by acne, surgery or thermal burns. • Reducing fine lines and deep wrinkles. • Pigmenta on e.g in melasma. • Tightening ageing skin. Benefits of skin needling: • Reduced risk of hyperpigmenta on and scarring, therefore safe on

ethnic or dark skin. • Suitable for thin and sensi ve skin. • The procedure is well tolerated and well accepted by all skin types. • It can be done on areas of skin not suitable for peeling or laser resurfacing, such as near eyes. • As opposed to abla ve laser resurfacing, the epidermis remains intact and is not damaged, therefore recovery is faster and clients can resume regular ac vi es within a few days, depending on the depth of the needles. What is the skin needling procedure like? The procedure is well tolerated. It can treat small areas or a full face and can be started aEer an in-depth consulta on with a qualified skin therapist. AEer cleansing the skin we apply numbing cream (topical) on the treatment area, to make the procedure more comfortable. The skin is treated in a specific pa-ern using a skin needling device. The device is passed over the skin mul ple mes for best results. As each fine needle passes over the skin, it creates micro channels in the skin to allow the healing cascade to begin; also this allows us to apply potent skin rejuvena on

serums and ingredients directly into the skin to help s mulate the skin cell regenera on. Depending on the condi on treated it may take anything between five minutes to an hour to complete the procedure. A minimum of six weeks is recommended between treatments, as it takes that long for new natural collagen to form. Postprocedure care: Skin needling is well tolerated by pa ents, but as with most advanced procedures there is always down me for the skin dryness, scaling, redness and heat may be seen aEer treatment, las ng for just a couple of days. Quality professional homecare prescribed by us, can lessen these effects greatly. Less quality skincare can actually cause unnecessary complica ons and slow healing, as well as hinder results. Sun Protec on is essen al. Rejuvena on of skin may be seen as soon as two weeks and as long as six to eight months aEer this specialised procedure and mul ple treatments are required to give the best results. The number required depends on a client’s skin concerns and goals and can be discussed at the consulta on stage.

The Cat’s Pyjamas Preschool & Nursery in West Melton now has a new state of the art building with the addition of another Prep room (3-5 years), incorporating the latest safety standards and technology available. “The Cat’s Pyjamas is a truly magical place of learning, where care is first and foremost, followed by learning that is calm and unhurried, yet filled with discovery, imagination and fun,” said Tracy Summerfield who along with husband Gavin, Gavin own and operate the successful Cat’s Pyjamas Preschool & Nursery centres in both West Melton and Rolleston. “Both centres are warm and welcoming, with experienced, qualified early childhood teachers who care for, and assist, the children in their development to become independent, capable and confident learners. Local dogs and their owners are on an unexpected mission working with Selwyn District Libraries to help children to improve their reading skills. Paws for Reading is a new programme being launched in May. The programme is designed to provide an opportunity for children who are not confident reading aloud, or who need to develop their reading skills, to read to a friendly dog for fifteen minutes each week. “We are excited about this new programme as similar ones overseas, and in New Zealand, have been shown to assist most children to improve their reading fluency and confidence,” said Selwyn Libraries Manager Vicki Carlyon. Carlyon The dogs being used in the reading programme are carefully selected by the Selwyn Dog Training Club to be suitable to work with children. The dogs are supervised by their owners while children read and library staff are also present at sessions. The sessions are being trialled during term two at all local libraries and are open to

IS IT TIME TO RETHINK THE 4 BEDROOM 3 BATHROOM IDEAL HOME? With a lot of a-en on being given to the Tiny House movement, affordable housing may be undergoing a change. A well specced smaller home on a small sec on may be a be-er alterna ve to a big mortgage, with a big sec on and a big home. Big sec ons require maintenance that you may not be commi-ed to weekend aEer weekend. Are those extra bathrooms really necessary? Or those extra bedrooms that use up hea ng? Perhaps a simpler lifestyle is the way to go – weekends spent fishing, skiing or other enjoyable pas mes instead of being a slave to the gardens and lawns. Perhaps you can use the surplus cash to buy investment proper es and get your money working for you. Downsizing does have a lot of upsides, can free up cash to live a fuller life, and it doesn’t have to be scary! Garage sale weekends are a good place to start. The ‘Relay for Life’ held on April 1st and 2nd in Rolleston, raised funds for the Canterbury West Coast Cancer Society to provide support services for cancer patients, their families and those that support them. The funds also help vital cancer research and provides the public with information on reducing the risk of cancer through a smoke free, sun smart, healthy lifestyle. The ‘SWATT’ team from Rolleston entered in the relay, inspired to raise funds and take part in this event by friends, and family members who have battled, and who still are

battling, cancer. Jo Cummings, Cummings a member of the SWATT team commented on the Relay for Life experience. “Our team was called SWATT (Sprinters, Walkers and Trash Talkers) and throughout the relay we had over fifteen relay team members, as well as many supporters, young and old, who came along, donated and walked a few laps with us. The motivation to be part of this event came initially from my son's diagnosis of Leukemia just over two years ago and watching him go through the horrendous journey that is cancer. We recognise the

importance of support during these hard times for everyone with a cancer diagnosis. As a team, each and every member has been affected in some way by cancer - as a collective group we have children, parents, partners, colleagues, friends, grandparents, siblings and other family members who have battled cancer, as well as knowing families in our community that are affected as well.” With a goal of raising $150, the SWATT team raised a whopping $1,782.90 - certainly an outstanding effort going to a wonderful cause.

Members of the Rolleston SWATT team L to R: Rachel York, Jo Cummings, Anna Molloy, Katie Morris and Lee Longdin.

The increase of staffing in Rolleston to guarantee a 24/7 patrolling police presence is welcome news for Selwyn, said local MP Amy Adams. Adams Police Commissioner Mike Bush announced further details of the Government’s $500 million Safer Communities package last week, which included a target of having 95 per cent of New Zealanders within 25 kilometres of patrolling police 24 hours a day. “Rolleston will be one of the first twenty towns around New Zealand to be resourced to ensure a police officer will be on patrol, and on call, at all hours of the day. This will give our community more confidence that help is on hand, and will ensure fewer victims of crime in

Selwyn,” Amy added. Commissioner Bush also revealed how many new staff would be allocated to each District, with seventy new staff heading to the Canterbury region. “All twelve Police Districts are receiving more officers as a result of the Government’s investment in policing and I am thrilled to see seventy additional staff allocated to the Canterbury District over the next four years,” Amy said. “While it is up to the District Commanders to work through which towns will receive the additional staff, it is pleasing to see some of those new officers allocated right here in Selwyn to support the upgraded 24 hour police presence.

“It’s not just about the numbers. This investment in policing also means a new 24/7 non-emergency police number as well as new r e s o u rc e s t a r g e t ed a t disrupting and dismantling organised crime. “Twelve new mobile police stations will be set up around New Zealand and we’ll be setting new challenging targets for police including 98 per cent of home burglaries attended within 48 hours and one minute faster emergency response times.” The first intake of new recruits will begin in July, with the first recruits on the beat by November.

Clark Land Surveyors Ltd Lincoln Envirotown are happy to announce that the recycling of household batteries has started in Lincoln at the New World supermarket and they would urge everyone who has been holding these and wondering what to do with them to go and deposit them in the container provided. The scheme was initiated by Lincoln Envirotown Trust, who contacted Alan Liefting of Ecotech Services to discuss this specialist service offered by them. The Trust was soon joined enthusiastically by Kyle Burnett of New World who agreed to provide the space for them to trial the concept. Maria Wake from the Sustainable Initiative Fund Trust was also supportive and the Trust agreed to fund the start-up costs of the project. Selwyn District Council’s Waste Manager, Andrew Boyd is extremely positive about the potential of this unique plan. “It’s great to see a problematic material in the waste stream being tackled through a community led initiative,” he said. “After much research on the safe storage of batteries, a

Lincoln Envirotown will soon make the first delivery of batteries for recycling to Ecotech Services, where they will be sorted, discharged where necessary, and stored for shipment to specialist recycling plants overseas. As far as anyone is aware there is no household battery recycling with the ease of a ‘drop off’ at a local retailer

anywhere in New Zealand. This exciting ‘first’ for Selwyn fulfils the important objective of keeping toxic materials out of landfills and is another step towards achieving environmental goals. In some European countries it is compulsory to recycle household batteries. “The hope is to start other ‘stations’ at retail outlets around Selwyn, but in the meantime everyone is urged to keep their batteries out of bins and bring them to New World in Lincoln,” Dave concluded.

Local Police and Selwyn District Council are reminding motorists of the importance of checking and checking again before crossing an intersection. 41% of all crashes in Selwyn occur at intersections. From 2012-2016 in total 520 crashes occurred at intersections within the district, and of these 225 crashes involved an injury, with twelve fatalities recorded. Nationally, many crashes occur at intersections, with 58,170 crashes occurring at intersections in New Zealand, or 39% of all crashes. “Police continue to observe motorists that do not stop at stop sign controlled intersections,” said Senior Sergeant Pete Stills of the New Zealand Police. “Far too many people have been killed or seriously injured in Selwyn at intersections. Police would remind motorists that STOP means your wheels are not moving, at all. Nothing else defines having come to a stop. A very good habit to form is to not start looking either way until after you have come to a complete stop.” Selwyn Road Safety Coordinator Ngaire Tinning commented that

while many crashes in other areas of New Zealand occur at urban intersections, most crashes in Selwyn are at intersections on rural roads where higher speed limits apply, creating more risk that injuries may occur. In Selwyn the most common cause of crashes at intersections are failing to stop or give way (a factor in 34% of crashes) and poor observation (a factor in 29% of crashes). The ‘Check and Check Again’ campaign is being carried out in Selwyn, Ashburton, Timaru and Waimakariri. The campaign will remind motorists of a driving basic - coming to a complete stop when approaching a stop sign, checking both ways for traffic and checking again before crossing the intersection to ensure it is safe to proceed. Failing to stop at an intersection can cost a driver a $150 fine, twenty demerit points, a serious injury or even a life if it causes a crash.

When approaching a Give Way intersection motorists also need to slow down and be ready to stop, give way if needed and check carefully before passing through the intersection. Drivers are also being reminded that showing some patience and courtesy to other motorists and road users at intersections helps create a safer environment for everyone and helps reduce the number of crashes. Selwyn motorists are being invited to check their knowledge of intersection rules by taking part in a quick questionnaire. Every entry goes into a draw to win a $250 MTA voucher and a weekly draw of a $50 MTA voucher. Entries are open until April 26th - to enter visit: www.selwyn.govt.nz/ intersections or pick up a form from a Selwyn Library/Service Centre.

Rolleston Reserve is coming to life with animated dinosaurs, kittens and alien invaders these school holidays. The reserve is the first park in Selwyn to become a ‘Magical Park’ where children are guided by an app that allows them to herd cats, see dinosaurs brought back to life, and witness what an alien invasion would look like. “The app involves children in a number of fun tasks at parks including finding dinosaur eggs, and herding kittens which provides a great workout,” commented Selwyn

District Council Senior Events and Recreation Advisor Dave Tippett. Tippett “The app combines technology and physical activity in a free engaging activity for families to try out over the school holidays.” The ‘Magical Park’ app is designed for children aged 611. It can be downloaded for free from Google Play or the ITunes App Store. It is compatible with iPhone 5+, iPad 3+, or android devices with a compass, gyroscope, accelerometer and GPS.

The average playing time for kids using the app is 30-60 minutes and in this time youngsters typically cover between 700 metres and two kilometres. “Magical Park is being trialled at Rolleston Reserve and if it proves popular we will look at introducing it at some other parks across Selwyn,” Dave added. Signage has been installed at Rolleston Reserve near the skate area with information on how to participate in Magical Park.

We have a lot of people asking us where do the spiders on their house come from. Well the majority of them don't just arrive there as big spiders, they fly in as ny li-le spiderlings. And they really do fly! If you have ever looked up into the sky on a sunny day and seen thousands of bits of web driEing in the wind, some of them long shiny strands, others sort of bundled up like a ball of fluff; well on each of those there is a baby spider. On Sunday last weekend was a perfect example - the sky was full of them. The baby spiders hatch out in a tree in the forests north of Christchurch, then they create a small web which liEs them up into the air and they float off to find a new home wherever the wind takes them. As the wind slows down and the cooler air of the evening comes in, the spiderlings gently float down to the ground, covering houses and trees, finding their new home. Of course if your house has been spider-proofed they will die before ge ng established on your home and before they will obviously grow into large spiders. These small spiders are so ny they can get inside window frames through the gaps in the vinyl beading, as well as through the window vent. So next me there is a hot sunny day hold your hand up to block the sun and look past it carefully; you maybe able to see some of your new neighbours on the move.

With the season drawing to a close, all remaining Malvern and Club competitions were completed. The West Melton Bowling Club congratulates Roye Daniel and Vonnie Clark who both finished off a very good season by winning the Malvern Junior Pairs played on April 9th. 1. Cut vegeta on back from north facing windows to make the most of the free heat you receive from the sun. 2. Does your home feel damp? Damp soil underneath the house is common in Christchurch. Community Energy Ac on can install a polythene vapour barrier to help stop the damp rising into your home. 3. Heat pumps are a very efficient way to heat a wellinsulated home: for every $1 of electricity you get up to $4 worth of heat.

Top Tip….. Prepaid electricity might seem like a good budge ng tool but check for high daily fixed costs and/or a high price per unit
