“A great success” and a “very enjoyable afternoon and evening”, was the response from those in attendance at the Darfield Netball Club fiftieth anniversary celebrations, held last weekend. There were old netball uniforms aplenty, at Saturday morning game time when present day players got to wear the old styles. This definitely raised a few smiles, and also saw them abandoned after just one quarter, as the old gym frocks were deemed far too hot for today’s players to wear! Late afternoon saw the arrival of guests, past and present committee members, along with former and current players and coaches. The Darfield Recreational Centre was superbly decorated with displays of memorabilia, trophies and photos. Much of which caused considerable amusement and laughter. The formal part of the evening saw acting Club President Victoria Leech take on the duties of MC, for the evening. Speeches from Jill Moore current Patroness, as well as past Presidents and committee members, made many present realise the amount of effort, hard work and

Springfield’s Tawera Hall was filled to capacity last Saturday for the inaugural Mel Parsons and Anika Moa concert. Requests were still going out on Facebook pages, right up to the day, urgently requesting extra tickets, such was the demand. “We were absolutely thrilled with the turnout,” said Mel, “we were fortunate to have a great, full house, for Saturday night. Thanks to everyone who came out and made a night of it with us!” “Anika has a really funny, interactive show and, after a little encouragement, was joined onstage by a couple of keen local backup dancers - Jess and Sian,” Sian Mel laughed. “The community really got in behind the show; tickets sold out in advance; Springfield School ran a fundraising food stall; local boy Jack Curle organised a raffle to raise funds for his trip to USA with Cure Kids; and Springfield's newest b u s i n es s ( W a n d e r l u s t Ch ocolate) made an appearance." While this all added to the

atmosphere - those attending would definitely agree that it was the entertainment onstage, the talent of the musicians and their rapport with the audience that well and truly made the night. “The Springfield Hall is an

awesome facility, and works well as a venue for concerts - I'd really like to bring more acts to the area in the future,” Mel concluded. Th e M al ver n com muni ty definitely hopes this will be the case, very soon!

The forthcoming, eagerly anticipated, Terrace Downs art exhibition is entitled, ‘The Long Road Home’, and features talented New Zealand artists, Lorna Allan and Sheena Lassen. Lassen Lorna is a committed and passionate artist who creates stunning landscapes capturing the profound and infinite beauty of the surrounding world. “I have always enjoyed the works of the Old Masters and also the artists of the Hudson River School,” Lorna commented. L o r n a’ s w o rk s ar e internationally recognised and she has won many awards, both here and overseas. In 2013 a selection of her works were published in the April/May issue of the International Artist Magazine under the title of, ‘Master Painters of the World’. Sheena, a Christchurch born artist, is equally recognisable by her achievements, particularly in Selwyn where she has earned many awards at the annual Malvern Community Art Week exhibitions. Sheena is well known for her representational landscape paintings in oils and she has a passion for the rugged high country of the South Island. She is however, versatile and enjoys working with other mediums and varying her style to suit the subject. “Artists like Lorna and Sheena have a way of capturing the magic light that sets off a majestic mountain, or the glistening dance of a water reflection,” added Terrace Downs’ Art Director, Rachael Inch, Inch “and I am really excited about seeing this collection come together. Landscape paintings are something that

After almost four years of waiting, the Brand family from Prebbleton are pleased to have moved into a new home after living in a shed because their home suffered earthquake damage. Supporting them along the way has been J enny Harkerss, Harkerss Selwyn Distri ct Council’s Community Recovery Support Officer. Jenny has been helping Melissa and Ken Brand, Brand as well as many other families, with their earthquake related problems since the September 2010 quakes. “Jenny has been with us right from the word go almost, so it was great to have her here with us on our move in day,” said Melissa. “She really does go the extra mile and it’s nice to have someone make the whole experience of dealing with insurance and builders a little easier.” Jenny reported there are a number of people in the same position here in Selwyn. Since the earthquakes, Jenny has been in contact with more than 400 families. Jenny has been helping people to resolve their earthquake claims over the past four years so she has a good understanding of the processes and systems organisations use such as EQC and insurance companies and is able to provide advice on how people can progress their claims. The Selwyn Earthquake Relief Fund was recently transferred into the Mayoral Relief Fund and is still available to help people who were living in Selwyn during the earthquakes and are experiencing hardship as a result of them. Clark Land Surveyors Ltd During last weekend Darfield Police attended three different reports of dairy cattle loose on main highways in the Darfield area. Unfortunatel y one heifer wandering on a main road, late on Friday night, was involved in a crash with an oncoming four wheel drive. It was extremely fortunate that none of the occupants of the vehicle were injured. Police treat all calls for livestock loose on the roads with urgency and we do our best to locate the animals and return them to a secure paddock in order to keep the roads safe for the public. We also attempt to locate the relevant farmer and provide advice to prevent this from happening in the future. This is the time of the year when heifers on local dairy farms will be calving. When they become separated from their calves, maternal instincts kick in and they will naturally be inclined to go looking for their calf and may break through, or over fences. Shortly the spring grass growth will be coming away and fresh roadside grass is tempting for livestock.

For all farmers and lifestyle block holders, now is a good time to be doing an inspection of all your boundary fences, especially paddocks adjoining roads. If your fences are not up to an acceptable and stock proof standard, take the necessary measures to get them up to standard. If you have paddock gates which open onto roads, consider also applying a chain and padlock as an added safety feature to prevent livestock breaking out of paddocks. Where you have lane ways running out onto roads, it would be good practice to keep the gate shut at the end of the laneway, if livestock get out of a paddock into the laneway they can't then walk straight out onto the road. In cases where farmer's livestock are loose on the roads, involved in accidents and negligence can be proved, the respective landowner may face criminal proceedings. I would encourage road users to contact stock control at the Selwyn District Council and Police if you observe livestock loose on our roads. In doing so you may just prevent a motorist

T o c o m m em o r a t e th e declaration of World War 1 (New Zealand entered the war along with Britain on August 4th - one hundred years ago) the Sheffield Waddington Township Committee, in conjunction with the Sheffield School, is to hold a tree planting ceremony at the Sheffield Cenotaph. Few events of the twentieth century are as important for determining the social and political events that followed this war. As a result empires were destroyed to found new nations from their parts. Revolutions were triggered, the results of which are still lived with - for example, the current chaos in the Middle East. New Zealand, so eager to join the War was changed for ever.

The ‘home before Christmas’ became a long four years that sent 100,000 young men to the service of King and Country. Of these, 41,000 were wounded and 17,000 killed. For a country whose population was approximately one million it was a huge commitment and loss. Little wonder that there are numerous memorials scattered across the countryside; in cities, towns, small settlements, plaques in halls, churches, schools, indeed anywhere people gathered. A small example is the Sheffield cenotaph; twenty names from the 17,000.

Peggie Jenkins President of Darfield Netball Club 1966/1967 and Ngarie Hewitt original committee member and first Patroness of Darfield Netball Club cutting the 50th anniversary cake.

On August 4th at 2pm the school and community will gather to remember this event and mark it by planting a Gallipoli Oak.

Two local lads were amongst the seventeen who recently attended the Tectra Learner Shearing Course held near Darfield. Both Harry Pankhurst and Stefan Breunisse attended the Tectra five day course, held at the farm of Andrew Adams. Learner Shearing courses are designed to give trainees a general understanding of wool shed operations, from hazards and terminology, to the roles and responsibilities of each team member. On successful completion, participants will be able to catch and confidently crutch sheep, plus have an understanding of the basic pattern for shearing a sheep. Tectra run courses nationwide and will return to Darfield to run further courses in December.

The Malvern Game Hunters Annual competition, held last weekend was the 21st Competition. Entries were high again this year and 292 hunters bagged a good number of large, impressive animals for the weigh in on Sunday at the Coalgate Tavern, which would have seen over 700 people attending. The committee would like to thank the Coalgate Tavern for their ongoing support, as well as their sponsors, in particular Hunting & Fishing New Zealand, who donated a raft of wonderful prizes. “This hunting competition is one of the largest in the South Island and is very well supported by hunters and sponsors alike,” commented Club Secretary Barry Wright. “The Club very much appreciates this generosity and support.” All of the main winning animals were larger this year than last, except for the boars (104.5kg was the largest last year, compared to 73kg this year). The Douglas Score winners were also larger this year except, once again, the boars.

Above: Malvern Under 17 player Anna Hurst displaying fantastic defensive skills against the Selwyn shooter. Teams from the Malvern Netball Centre attended the Canterbury Country Field Days netball tournament at Lincoln’s courts last weekend. The Primary A, U15 and U17 teams all played w el l , w i th s u b s t an ti al improvement on the previous week’s tournament, held at Hurunui. Primary A team, lost all four games, however they were excellent games and the girls

were very competitive. Under 15 team, team had two good wins over Kaikoura and Hurunui, a great improvement on last weekend’s tournament, but lost against North Canterbury and Selwyn. Under 17 team, team had a win and three losses. The win against Kaikoura showed improvement in the short space of time, since last weekend’s game.

The Malvern Representative Under 15 team netball participating in the two minute shoot-out. L to R: Shanyia Johnston-Kroll, Tessa Mitchell, Olivia Brackman & Hayley Fraser. When the Malvern U15 netball coaches Steph Bothwell and Rachael Peddie suggested to the team the possibility of attending a netball tournament in Hokitika, all the girls were excited. However to make this happen the coaches stressed that the team needed to organise their own fundraising and show their determination and dedication to attend the event. Last week saw the U15 team out and about in Darfield seeking sponsorship for a shoot-out. This is where each team member gets two minutes to shoot as many goals as they possibly can. Th e t eam h a ve n o w successfully completed their shoot out and thank all those members of the community, along with local businesses who pledged sponsorship. At present money is still being collected, but it is anticipated that the team have achieved close to their target!

Many thanks to our sponsors.
