The afternoon of Saturday, May 31st saw Springfield/Sheffield Netball Club host their fiftieth Jubilee. The weather was good, and many past and current players attended at the Springfield Netball courts to participate in the day’s events. The Netball Club began in 1964 with one team playing on Springfield School’s netball courts. Currently the Club has five teams entered into the Malvern competition, as well as junior non-competitive teams. The sunny afternoon saw around fifty people turn out to celebrate the fifty year occasion

and take the opportunity to catch up with old friends. The format of the day was an invitation game of netball, where netball players past and present played against the Springfield/Sheffield Senior A Team. This game was followed by an afternoon tea, where the cutting of the jubilee cake took place. The cake was cut by the oldest member of the Club, Val Rowe and the youngest member of the Club, Maddy Judd. Judd Plenty of photographs were taken, and carefully arranged into the decades of play.

Pheasants are one of New Zealand’s most sought after game birds. Their bright plumage and superb eating qualities make them popular with game bird hunters, but the season to bag them is very restricted. Male birds only are able to be shot on June 7th and 8th in the North Canterbury Fish and Game region and to celebrate this fact Darfield Hotel are hosting a Pheasant shooting competition. The weigh-in, to be held on Sunday, June 8th at 2pm will also feature a kids’ pheasant plucking competition with prizes for the quickest pluck and the best

pluck (look out for the colouring competition too). Shooters can vie for the major prize of a Motorised Decoy by entering their two, heaviest pheasant combined weights. The first English pheasants arrived in Wellington in 1842 and further liberations resulted in the bird being abundant in both islands by 1870. The pheasant population then plunged into a remarkable decline, from which it has never recovered, due to eating poisoned grain used for rabbit eradication followed by the release of stoats and weasels to quell the rabbit plague. However, there are still enough pheasants for hunting, assisted in some areas by annual releases of hand reared stock. In the South Island pheasants are limited to the Nelson area, some coastal riverbeds, plus a few other isolated habitats in Canterbury. Pheasants have no down and dislike damp conditions. Shooters can only take male birds (roosters) and it is illegal to shoot hen pheasants (females) as they are protected as the providers of next year’s crop. Pheasants are vocal birds, particularly towards the end of the season as territorial disputes are settled. As a result

they can be easily located. They have good hearing and sight and successful hunting requires elements of silence and surprise. When pheasants are flushed they often glide for quite a distance before landing and running at high speed. Often they will sit tight in dense vegetation. One trick is to stop frequently, which can unnerve a hiding bird in thinking that they’ve been seen and send them into flight. Teaming up with other hunters to walk in a line through crops and flush pheasants ahead is often successful too. The best pheasant hunting occurs on bright days. Sunny spells have the birds moving about from daybreak to mid morning and again from mid afternoon to dusk. A good dog is almost essential as pheasants can be difficult to flush from cover. While cock birds are easily located and flushed, shot birds can be difficult to find. Breeds like labradors, pointers and spaniels are useful as they flush and retrieve the birds. Points to remember: North Canterbury Fish and Game area. Cock Pheasants only to be shot - June 7th and 8th. 2014, (two days only) and a daily bag limit of one.

On Queens Birthday Sunday crowds took to the streets of the city to compete in varying sections of the Christchurch Airport Marathon. With categories to choose from such as; full marathon, half marathon run and walk, ten kilometre run and walk, along with Kid’s Mara’Fun, there was plenty of opportunity for people to compete. The Malvern News would like to Darfield’s Mark Beattie on congratulate all its readers that completion of the competed and completed, or full marathon run. just participated to the very best of their ability. Ex Greendale local Finlay Fraser Milne not only has Scot’s ancestry, but also has a Scot’s ability to play the bagpipes. It was this ability that saw Finlay travel to Gallipoli and play the pipes at the 2014 Anzac service. Finlay is currently a Lieutenant in the New Zealand Army (Queen Alexandra's Mounted Rifles- QAMR). Prior to his military career Finlay lived at Greendale, attending Greendale Primary School, followed by Darfield High School, before securing a piping scholarship and progressing to St. Andrews College (STAC), Christchurch. Finlay’s family still reside in the local community and for Finlay this area will always be thought of as his home. “We were extremely proud that Finlay was chosen to represent the New Zealand Defence Force and play the bagpipes at the Gallipoli Anzac Service this year,” said Finlay’s father Michael Fraser Milne, Milne “he had quite a bit of piping to do at various services and also at the New Zealand embassy in Ankara, Turkey.” Michael with his accent and his

love of Whisky, which is his bu sin es s, is an eas il y recognisable Scot, but he laughingly confesses to only playing the pipes, ‘badly’. The family did however, give Finlay the opportunity of piping lessons following on from his father’s basic instruction on the chanter. “Finlay took lessons from Barry Shaw, who was employed by the Malvern School of Music, after school, every Monday, from the age of eight,” Michael said. The parental start, followed by lessons, obviously paid off for Finlay, as was proven by the achievement of a piping

scholarship to STAC where he continued playing with the school pipe band, ending up as Pipe Sergeant and going to Scotl and fo r th e Wor ld Championships. “The Anzac Gallipoli trip was quite an experience for him,” Michael commented, “and the various battlefield tours had quite an effect too. As a young soldier seeing lads of his age or younger, from his regiment, buried over there, was definitely thought provoking. He felt, and was, very privileged to see all this through the eyes of the military.”

To the Editors: Koanga Gardens are appealing for money to purchase land to keep their seed saving gardens operating (the land is currently leased). A small donation of $10 will help buy a metre of the land. I hope the gardeners of Darfield and surrounding districts are willing to join the cause. Kay Baxter has worked long and hard for many years collecting and growing on many heritage seeds. Since 1920 we have lost 90% of our heirloom seeds and 85% of our fruit varieties. Many of us are aware that the modern seeds do not perform very well, if at all, and food value is not of a high standard. To donate www.koanga.org.nz and click donate or post a cheque to Koanga Institute, Kotare Rd, RD 5, Wairoa. Remember the wonderful taste of apples off our own home grown trees, and donate a few dollars to help retain our fruit flowers and vegetables, I am sure Darfield gardeners are willing to do our bit.

An elegant vegetable cookbook released by Selwyn chef Robert Koller late last year is now available in several bookstores around Canterbury. The Quickenberry Vegetable Cookbook is full of ways to make vegetables special. It brings a lifetime of cooking experience and Robert’s passion for making vegetables interesting, into print. The cookbook has been named after the Lodge Robert owns with his wife Christine on the grounds of Terrace Downs Golf Resort. It is one of several high country tourism businesses that operate in the area. “The cookbook is full of recipes and stories about food and some bits about ourselves and Quickenberry,” commented Robert. “It has taken many years to collect the ideas and photos, but I’m very pleased with the final product. It’s hardback with glossy pages and pictures, linen bound and with a dust jacket. It makes a beautiful gift for people who love good food,” he added. After achieving well at the preliminaries local J ames Davidson has earned himself a place in the ANZ Young Farmer Contest Final, to be held around Christchurch as well as at Lincoln University, over the first weekend in July. It was a first appearance for James in the regional final, held at the Fairlie A & P Show, on E as ter M o n d ay. J am es commented “I was hoping to learn from the experience and scope it all out,” he said. “My goal was just to make it to the top four, so it was a definite surprise to win.” James and his partner Chloe moved from Ashburton to Darfield in February to both start new jobs. James currently works as 2-ic on a 1,400 cow dairy farm in Darfield where he hopes to gain more experience before he takes the next step up in his career. Chloe holds a teaching position at Kirwee Model School. “The ultimate goal,” James said, “is farm ownership, but in the meantime I am working on developing our r ecen tl y purchased 70Ha grazing and silage block at Glentunnel.” James grew up near Ashburton in Eiffelton, a small rural district, on his parents arable and sheep

Nominations are now open for the Faringdon Sensational Selwyn Awards 2014. The awards are held every two years to recognise and honour outstanding Selwyn businesses, community groups and individuals for their inspirational work and achievements. The awards are organised by Selwyn District Council with Faringdon as the naming sponsor. Nominations can be made in nine categories: Agri-business, Arts and Culture, Business, Community Service, Environmental, Sports, Tourism, Young Achiever and The Diana Isaac Cup (for native planting in the Selwyn District). In 2012 over sixty nominations were received for the Sensational Selwyn Awards. “There are many individuals, businesses and groups who help make Selwyn a great place to live,” commented Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe. “The awards are an opportunity to recognise excellence, innovation and service and I encourage people to put forward nominations.” Jake Hughes from Faringdon added that they are pleased to be sponsoring the 2014 awards. “Selwyn is a very exciting, innovative environment for businesses to operate in and it is also a great place to choose to live in with a high level of community facilities available. It is fantastic for Faringdon as a new community evolving in Rolleston to be able to recognise the work of businesses, community groups and local residents by sponsoring the awards.” The awards are open to individuals and organisations who live, or are based, in Selwyn district and meet the criteria for entry listed on nominations forms. 2012 award winners are not eligible to enter the same category in 2014. Award nominees must give permission to be entered on the entry form - applications close on June 20th. Nomination forms are available from Council libraries and service centres, the Lincoln Event Centre and online at www.selwyn.govt.nz/awards.

farm. He attended St Bedes College following that with Lincoln University where he gained a Bachelor of Commerce in Agriculture. James has also spent time overseas travelling in Australia, Europe, Africa and Asia. While in Australia and the UK he also took on farm work. Upon returning home James spent two years on a robotic dairy farm in Mayfield before taking up his current position “As a youngster I never thought I would end up farming,” James said, “I always thought I would like to do engineering,” he added. James believes it was the sale of the family farm, when he was young that sparked his farming bug, “once something's gone you appreciate it in a whole other way,” he commented. The highlight of James’s Young

Farmer Contest so far, has been winning the Regional Final in Fairlie. “During the competition I tried hard all day, but to see the points come up during the evening show, was pretty rewarding. Getting to this stage of the competition opens up so many opportunities,” James added. So is James looking forward to the Grand Final? “Just getting to Grand Final will be a great feeling, there is a lot of hard work to be done preparing for it. It will be nice to put it all into practice. I am looking forward to the practical aspects of the contest. I enjoy problem solving and being able to test my farming skills in a pressure situation like this, makes this competition what it is.” James finished.

James Davidson of Darfield recently won the Aorangi Regional Final to become one of the seven contestants in this year’s ANZ Young Farmer Contest Grand Final to be held at various locations around Christchurch and at Lincoln University over the first weekend in July.

Synchronised Swimming is alive and well in Selwyn. Based in Weedons, at Small Strokes Swim School, a group of dedicated girls aged from seven to fifteen years old have been preparing to compete in the South Island Championships. “Currently we are the only affiliated Synchronised Swimming Club in Canterbury,” said Coach and Small Strokes’ owner Joan Billing. Billing “The girls have been practicing up to three times a week, since the middle of last year, for this competition, and will be expected to compete in the pool over two days of competition. Typically there is a figure section where the girls have to demonstrate single individual moves, and then a team routine to music for three minutes. That might not sound like a long time, but they must not touch the bottom of the pool at all, and have some pretty tricky moves to execute,” Joan commented. Joan, is an experienced national level coach plus judge and has over 28 years experience with synchronised swimming events. Since moving to Selwyn eight years ago, Joan has led a team of professional swim coaches specialising in learn-to-swim classes for babies, through to school students. The South Island Championships will be held in Dunedin on June 21st and 22nd. Small Strokes Swim School can be contacted direct by anyone interested in finding out more about general swimming classes or synchronised swimming. “We would also like to acknowledge the help we have had from people to attend these competitions,” Joan added. The Selwyn District Council, Synlait and The Warehouse in Rolleston are all worthy of our appreciation, as they have provided either grants or clothing. We also gratefully thank Weedons School and Small Strokes clients who supported our two bake sales,” Joan concluded.

Castle Hill’s Greg Hopkinson was born in 1958 on the West Coast - a rugged, dramatic place that tends to shape the lives of the small group of people who live there. Living in Greymouth and attending Grey High, at a time that that particular educational institution didn’t rate highly on the leader board, Greg was attr acted to th e m or e adventurous characters at the School. All of whom had a natural inclination to extend the en vel op e of accep tabl e behaviour. However he went on to study engineering at the University of Canterbury and become an extremely successful businessman, but perhaps not such a great partner/friend. Greg went through some heady days of partying, high pressure business deals and all the trappings that brings, before realising it wasn’t making him, or the people around him, happy. He then went on a search for a better way and in his words; found it. go about their day. He speaks to groups and businesses about the benefits of mindfulness and meditation in daily work and life; how being more present makes practitioners more focussed, creative, efficient, productive and how everything flows easily and enjoyably. ‘Boundless’, the recently published book, is his story. On one level, ‘Boundless’ will appeal to readers who find Greg’s escapades from a neardeath exp erien ce in an avalanche, through to doing business in the decaying Soviet Union and few other adventures in between, fascinating. Others who are looking for more happiness and contentment in their life, but haven’t got a clue where to start, will find his journey to become a monk, equally fascinating. ‘Boundless’ has the potential to change readers’ preconceptions about happiness and success. Having established a successful chain of retail stores with his

wife and a group of friends, Greg finally exited business, after his marriage failed and went on a quest to find a better way in life. He and partner Sally live at Castle Hill and are both monks of an ancient non-religious teach i n g . G r eg tr avel s extensively and fills his life with the things that make him content - skiing, walking in the bush near his home, socialising and chipping away at a range of diverse projects.

Selwyn residents are being asked to share their views on the delivery of Council’s services as part of the 2014 Resident’s Survey. Each year the Council carries out a resident’s telephone survey which asks people to comment on what they think of the quality of Council services like parks, roads, rubbish and recycling co ll ection and libraries. The survey also asks residents what they think the Council’s spending priorities should be. This year’s survey also includes questions on the Council’s Smoke Free Policy and on pokie machine gambling. The survey seeks responses from around 1,000 randomly chosen residents by telephone. The telephone survey is designed to be representative

of the demographics of Selwyn District, and is carried out by independent research company Research First. The telephone survey is being carried out until Monday, June 9th. “This year people who are contacted by telephone and asked to take part in the survey will also have the option to complete the survey online,” said Melissa Renganathan, Renganathan the Council’s Research and Policy Advisor. “The survey provides the Co u n c i l w i th va l u ab l e information we can use to evaluate our performance and identify what we are doing well and what we can improve.” “We are also inviting other Selwyn residents to complete the survey online as we value their comments on the Council’s performance,” she added.

G r ou ps and i nd i vi du al s interes ted in pres er ving Selwyn’s heritage are being encouraged to apply for funding for their next project as Selwyn Heritage funding applications are now open. Selwyn District Council has funding available to meet some of the extra costs associated with pro tecting heri tag e buildings and trees for the community’s benefit. This may include restoring, reinforcing and pr otecting h er itag e buildings, and other structures such as war memorials, sites and trees. Grants given in previous years have ranged between $250 and $17,000 for projects such as pruning old oak trees, restoring weather boards and earthquake repairs to buildings and other structures following the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. The Ellesmere Band Hall is a listed heritage item in the Selwyn District Plan and received a grant of $3,000 to replace weatherboards and repaint the exterior of the hall last year. Band secretary Alison Donley commented that the hall was in desperate need of restoring. “We were grateful for the grant from the Council to repair the hall as it is enjoyed by the whole community and adds to the heritage of Selwyn. It was great

to see it in tip-top condition for the Anzac Day commemorations this year.” Averil Carpenter from the Old Vicarage in Prebbleton received $1,000 to replace an aluminium window frame with a wooden frame two years ago. “The previous owners had put in a box bay aluminium window, but it didn’t match the style of the 150 year-old home,” Averil said. “When Councillor Malcolm Lyall told me about the Selwyn Heritage fund I was delighted that a grant could cover part of the cost of replacing the window to maintain the heritage of the building,” she added. There is one Selwyn Heritage funding round each year and $35,000 is available to support projects by owners of heritage buildings or protected trees in the Selwyn District. Priority is given to items listed in the

● ● ● ●

Selwyn District Plan. The heritage fund can be used to pay for part of the cost of restoration or protection work, and applicants will also need to fund some of this cost from other sources. Applications for this round close on Friday, July 11th, 2014. Applicants need to include at least two quotes from suitably qualified tradespeople. Funding may be given to activities such as restoring chimney posts, replacing plaster, repairing windows, w ater bl as ting buildings, tree trimming or pruning, roof repairs, organ repairs and enhancement to heritage features. Funding cannot be used for routine main ten an ce, or for improvements which are of personal or commercial benefit such as new kitchens or bathrooms.

Students at Windwhistle School have been busy painting the new rebound wall at the School. But before the students could get involved with the painting, a problem-solving maths lesson took place. Students were required to work out how much paint would be needed, to give the wall two coats. Utilising measurements of length and height to calculate the area to be covered, the students were able to calculate the volume of paint required to do the job. On Friday, May 30th students from Hororata Primary School not only got to attend classes wearing their favourite Pyjamas, but also got to have a mammoth pillow fight and all while donating a coin to raise funds for the Starship Children’s Hospital. Organised by the School’s Student Council, money raised from the purchase of food provided on the day, was put toward Senior Camp.

When the necessary funding for a parti cular speci al needs learning programme was not available from other sources, a Windwhistle School representative approached Malvern Lions to see if they would be able to help. “We were blown away with how supportive the Malvern Lions were right from our first contact with them,” said Windwhistle S ch oo l Teach er , K a th y Mehrtens. Mehrtens “They went out of their way to develop a clear understanding of what we were trying to achieve with our forthcoming programme and why it was so important. The Lions' members backed us, with substantial contributions from several sources: Malvern Lions, the E B Millton Trust and CRT Darfield Real Estate,” commented Kathy. On behalf of Windwhistle School, Kathy would like thank all the Malvern Lions members including Chris

Malvern Lions President Chris Abbott presents a cheque enabling a special needs learning programme to go ahead for Windwhistle School students. This was gratefully accepted by Kathy Mehrtens from Windwhistle School. Abbott, Abbott John Morten and Brian Davidson, as well as Kerin Davidson Pitkethley of CRT Real Estate. “To know we have such a hard working organisation in our community as the Lions, who

will generously support us to make a direct difference to the future lives of our students, is a great feeling. The specialist learning programme is now underway,” Kathy concluded.

Mr Tomlin, Mr Dawson and Mr Blondell have the full support of their work colleagues at West Melton School, as they start the 150 day beard growing competition as part of the celebrations for West Melton 150th anniversary. Front Row: Mr Tomlin and Mr Dawson. Mr Blondell was missing in action for the photo, but staff found a replacement . Mr Blondell (insert) - apparently (said with tongue in cheek) - Teachers WITH beards give out 7.4% less homework than teachers without beards! West Melton is turning 150 years old and to celebrate this milestone, the community will hold a weekend of celebrations over Labour weekend - October 2014. Last week saw the launch of a beard growing competition. Contestants turned up cleanly

shaven at West Melton Tavern on May 27th, exactly 150 days out from Labour weekend, to register for the event which will be judged over the forthcoming Labour weekend. Three male staff from West Melton School put themselves

forward to grow creative art on their chins. Messrs Thomlin, Dawson and Blondell have the school’s full support. Both students and staff members are looking forward to the changes that will happen before their eyes!

New renovations: renovations These are due to begin in mid June creating a new teachers aide space and breakout learning area. The School is currently applying for grants to furnish the new areas.

James White and Logan Holland (in pink shirts and Logan with pink hair - you’ll have to believe us on this!) two of West Melton School’s councillors. The boys organised ‘Pink Shirt Day’ for students of the school. Pink Shirt Day is about working together to prevent or stop bullying by celebrating people's differences and promoting positive relationships. Pink Shirt Day began in Nova Scotia, Canada in 2007. A group of students decided to defend a child who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. In a show of solidarity, many of his peers turned up to school the next day wearing pink shirts, and so Pink Shirt Day was born. West Melton pupils turned out not only in pink shirts but also in pink skirts, pink socks and very pink hair!

New families: families Greendale School recognises the input of new families coming on board which adds to their school community in such a positive way. “We are a small close knit school where our community is special and important to us,” commented the School’s principal.

Malvern Netball Centre have recently trialled local netball players for their inclusion in Malvern Represent ative teams. Each year Malvern selects players in the grades of Primary A, Under 15’s and Under 17’s to attend t o ur nam e nt s ar o u n d Canterbury. This year Malvern recruited outside selectors to attend the trials, involving a substantial number of girls from local Clubs. The trials were not only well attended, but with all the girls playing to their best ability, it made it tough for the selectors to decided on final teams. Malvern would like to acknowledge the coaches who have offered to coach and support the girls through this season. A man calls home to his wife and says, "Honey I have been asked to go fishing at a big lake up in Canada with my boss and several of his friends. We'll be gone for a week. This is a good opportunity for me to get that promotion I've been wanting so would you please pack me enough clothes for a week and set out my rod and tackle box. We're leaving from the office and I will swing by the house to pick my things up. Oh! Please pack my new blue silk panamas." The wife thinks this sounds a little fishy but being a good wife she does exactly what her husband asked. The following weekend he comes home a little tired but otherwise looking good. The wife welcomes him home and asks if he caught many fish? He says, "Yes!
