Darfield Preschool and Nursery has received a research-grade scientific sensor to measure UV levels in the playground and send real-time sun-smart information directly to the teacher’s smartphone or tablet. This is an New Zealand invention given free of charge to 100 early childhood facilities in New Zealand. It is a joint initiative between suncare brand Banana Boat and innovation company Spark 64. The most active, yet vulnerable, members of New Zealand society - those aged five years and under can now benefit from Kiwi innovation. “The UVLens technology was developed to ensure a safer summer for Kiwi kids. It has been a huge undertaking, requiring significant investment, and there is no way we could have equipped 100 early

childhood centres with UVLens sensors without the funding and support of Banana Boat,” said Daniel Xu, Xu UVLens inventor, Spark 64. Research grade scientific sensors’ risk factors on cloudy days, alerts for reapplication, skin-type analysis questionnaire, and sun smart tips, will be at the fingertips of thousands of pupils and teachers, all in real-time and deployed directly to smartphones and tablets complete with interactive education tools. According to the Melanoma Foundation six Kiwis are diagnosed with melanoma every day and sunburn in childhood can contribute towards the cumulative effect of sun exposure over a lifetime.

On February 13th and 14th the many locals training for the Coast to Coast will have their efforts tested when the event takes place. This is the 33rd Coast to Coast and has this year attracted more entrants than in the previous five years. Now operated under the control of a new management team, headed by event director and multisport icon Richard Ussher, Ussher the 243 kilometre, 2015 Speight’s Coast to Coast will take place with some innovative changes. “We listened to the competitors and those with a long history of involvement in the Coast to Coast and introduced a range of new initiatives,” Richard said, “these include a new final bike leg, an event App (available for both Android and Apple) and GPS tracking.” A digital radio system and the GPS tracking of athletes will enable the story of the event to be told like never before - while also improving safety, through the more robust communication system. A reduction in entry fees was also important and Richard added that he has been ‘extremely encouraged’ by positive feedback received from competitors, sponsors and stakeholders, saying they were on the right track. Richard added that the thirty teams in the new tandem event was a great example of increased interest and he has been encouraged by the enquiries coming from overseas and is keen to work on ways to make it easier for international competitors to come to New Zealand to compete. 44 South Terrace, Darfield 7510 Ph 318 8896 valbriggsinteriors@xtra.co.nz

the Godzone Adventure race. Teams ride individual bikes, not tandems, but must stay in close proximity throughout the entire event.

The News* spoke with one of the local competitors, Physiotherapist Candace McGirr about her preparation for the event: *Which event are you entered in and have you competed before? Candace: Three person team event this year. Last year I completed the two day individual.

*What is your motivation for entering? I am a last minute fill in! I was rung three weeks ago to join the team after their female kayaker had to pull out due to injury.

*What personal goals have you set yourself? To get through the Gorge in one piece, and staying dry!

*If part of a team, which section are you doing? Three person team event - I am doing the kayak section.

*Training - When did you start training for the event? Officially started training three weeks ago but have been kayaking on/off throughout the year.

*Run/cycle - how many kms do you run/cycle in a day/week? • • •

Run 1/week for 3-5km Bike 2/week for 70-100km. One of these rides is with the Sunday Bike Group Kayak 2/week for 10-30km

*If kayaking - was it challenging obtaining the Cert required for entering? No as long as you feel confident in your boat.

*How do you prepare for the weather conditions and challenges such as river crossings? Weather is something you cannot change therefore you must train in rain, hail or shine. It is important when training to carry the compulsory gear required for the race just incase.

*Have you done a guided mountain run as part of your buildbuild-up and if so, how was it? No but it would be wise; Jill Lang and I did the run last year and got bluffed (stuck) as we didn’t know what side of the river to be on!

*Equipment - What equipment (shoes/kayak/bike) do you need and do you have to pay for it yourself or are you able to look for sponsorship to help with the cost? All the gear I have bought, over the last few years. My newest purchase was a kayak which has been a great investment.

*Diet and Nutrition - What, if any, special diets have you been on and has it been difficult, especially over Christmas/New Year? - Do you need special high energy food on the day, if so what sort of things do you carry? Festive Season issues not applicable as I was not confirmed as racing Xmas/New Year. On the day I like to eat bananas, Ems power cookies and lollies. For recovery I like creamed rice and choco milk!

*Support Crew - Who is in your support crew and what do they do before, during and after the race to assist you?

15% off Luxaflex Rollershades and Sunscreens until February 28th 2015 • Curtains • Rods & Tracks

The new tandom category comprises of teams of two racing the entire course together. They will paddle the same double sea kayaks used in

• Mirrors • Lamps

My support crew this year will be my other team mates. Before the race they make sure you have all the appropriate gear including food and water. On the day they help you into and out of your kayak. And after the race a massage is always greatly appreciated! It was awesome last year having everyone supporting you as you came out of the river at the Gorge Bridge and I hope to see everyone out again this year supporting our local competitors.

The investment of $850,000 in the Rolleston to Lincoln Cycleway is a positive move to enhance cycling infrastructure in Selwyn, said local MP Amy Adams. Adams The cycleway is one of thirteen projects which have been prioritised by the Government because of their value to commuter cyclists, and their additional benefits to recreational riders. “The Rolleston to Lincoln cycleway will receive $300,000 from the Urban Cycleways Fund, with $275,000 each from the National Land Transport Fund and local government. “This is a great example of Government agencies and the community working together to

improve safety on our roads for cyclists and motorists in Canterbury,” Amy said. The announcement is part of a $37 million package of cycleway projects to be rolled out across the country in the next year, pulling together a range of funding sources to expand and improve New Zealand’s cycling network. “The Urban Cycleways Programme is providing $100 million over the next four years so high-quality projects can get underway faster. “Cycling contributes to healthier communities, and the Urban Cycleways Programme encourages everyone to enjoy the benefits of an active lifestyle,” Amy finished.

The 100 early childhood centres, selected to represent the population base throughout the country, will receive extensive information, support and sunscreen products and can participate at no cost. Following the duration of the initiative each early childhood centre is encouraged to keep and use the UVLens technology. A spokesperson from Darfield Preschool and Nursery commented that the sensor was great and being linked to a cellphone made the information easy to receive. “We have certainly found the sensor very helpful, especially on cloudy days to see what the UV index is and confirm whether we need to apply sun screen or not.” “Our policy, in line with the Cancer Society, ensures we apply sun screen around 10am, 12pm and 2pm as well as wearing sun hats outside through terms one and four.”

It’s time to ditch your normal mode of transport, dust off your bike and start exploring the glorious outdoors again! This February is Bike Wise Month and Kiwis are encouraged to jump on their bikes and take part in the numerous events around the country to celebrate. Bike Wise is a national cycling programme run by the NZ Transport Agency that promotes cycling as a fun, healthy and safe way to travel, while encouraging all road users to share the road safely. Last year approximately 80,000 Kiwis took part in Bike Wise Month in around 850 events in New Zealand. Hundreds of cycling related events will be taking place around the country this month, including Big Bike Tune Ups where mechanics conduct free bicycle maintenance and safety checks and the national Go By Bike Day on the February 11th where those taking part can grab a free breakfast on the go!

NZ Transport Agency’s National Cycling Manager Dougal List, List is excited to see more people give cycling a go throughout the month of February. “The Bike Wise programme for 2015 features plenty of great events up and down the country, providing some wonderful opportunities for people to get involved. Cycling is a great way to bring families together, socialise with friends, and meet like-minded enthusiasts,” he said. “This year is the thirteenth year of the Bike Wise programme and we are looking forward to seeing more New Zealanders taking to their bikes as their chosen method of transport. Bike Wise is all about encouraging participation and making it fun.” Keen cyclist and New Zealand comedian and author, Jon Bridges, Bridges is a great supporter of Bike Wise and looks forward to taking part in some of the cycling events on offer. “Bike Wise Month is a fantastic way to ditch your cars for a few weeks and get on your bikes!” he said. “I’ll be attending my local Big Bike Tune Up and can’t wait to

help some would-be cyclists to get their bikes out of the garage and make them safe to get back on the road.” NZTA are urging cyclists and motorists to share the road safely and have put together some tips:

Safety Tips for Cyclists •

Be prepared: Plan a safe route and check your bike before you start – brakes, tyres, chain, lights and reflectors Be aware: Watch for car doors opening, potholes, rubbish, grates, pedestrians and other hazards Be confident: Ride in a straight line, use cycle lanes when you can Be considerate: Try not to hold up the flow of traffic – if necessary, pull over to allow vehicles to pass Be predictable: Make eye contact with other road users and signal your intentions clearly Be seen: Wear high visibility or brightly coloured clothing. Use front and rear lights at night, in low light and rain Be patient: Slow down near parked or lined up vehicles. Pass slowly and only when safe.

Safety Tips for Motorists •

Be aware: Watch for cyclists, especially in low light or rain, before opening car doors and at intersections. Cyclists may be travelling faster than you expect Be patient: Slow down near cyclists and if need be, wait behind them. Pass slowly and only when it is safe. Ideally, leave a space of about 1.5 metres

Be considerate: Cyclists sometimes need to use the traffic lane for their safety. Please give them time and space to move in and out of the lane When turning left: Remember that if you have passed a cyclist just before approaching a traffic signal, driveway, bus stop or junction, it is very likely they will end up on your left-hand side or just in front of you – assume the cyclist is in one of your blind spots.

Bike Wise Events •

Big Bike Tune Ups, throughout February 2015 To ensure bikes are safe, road-worthy and are a good fit for the cyclist, a series of Big Bike Tune Ups will be held throughout the country over Bike Wise Month. People are encouraged to bring their bikes along to a local Big Bike Tune Up where mechanics will conduct a free maintenance check.

Go By Bike Day, February 11th, 2015 Bike Wise Month’s key event, Go By Bike Day, encourages Kiwis to leave the car at home and cycle to work or school. In a number of regions, they can even enjoy a free breakfast on the way.

See www.bikewise.co.nz/events for a full list of events.

What is Citizens Advice? How can it help you? Citizens advice provides free advice and support to enable you to access information about your legal rights and responsibilities, for you to resolve your issues or problems. Volunteers undertake a year of training to ensure they can provide you with information to enable you to discuss options that fit your needs. For example: How many times have you returned goods to the shop when they are not up to standard? How many times has the shop assistant said, “I am sorry we cannot refund you.” Do you know your consumer rights? Talk with Citizens advice and be confident when dealing with consumer issues. Not sure how to fill in that form, need budgeting advice, counselling, or having problems with tenants, neighbours or immigration, maybe just need contacts for local activities or a JP. This is just a small representation of the areas in which Citizens Advice can provide confidential advice. Next time you have a query and are not sure what to do, talk with a Citizens Advice volunteer. Never feel that you don’t know again, pick up the phone or pop into the office.

Corporal (rtd) Willie Apiata VC has confirmed that he will attend the fundraiser Rannerdale World War One Commemorative Centre Regimental Dinner as guest of honour. This event is being held at the Air Force Museum on February 28th, 2015. Corporal Apiata is New Zealand’s only living Victoria Cross recipient. The VC was awarded after rescuing a fellow soldier under brutal enemy fire while serving in Afghanistan with New Zealand’s SAS. Rannerdale’s CEO, Steve Shamy said, “we are honoured that Corporal Apiata VC has accepted our invitation to be guest of honour at our World War One Commemorative Regimental Dinner. The Wildlife Veterinary Trust is looking for volunteers to help get the South Island Wildlife Hospital up and running, and to assist with its operation on a regular basis. The Trust need people who can regularly commit to going along to open the hospital, for a few hours, once or twice a month, and help with a variety of tasks. Tasks include: looking after reception, gardening, building/ handyman work, vet nursing duties, cleaning/care of wildlife, and manning after hours mobile phone, as well as marketing and fundraising. The goal is to create and operate a Veterinary Hospital at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, specially equipped to care for

sick and injured native New Zealand wildlife. At present, the more common species are treated and rehabilitated by a loose unit of volunteers and at shelters. It is envisaged that the proposed wildlife facility will act as a coordinating centre for this important network, and provide services and training that will enhance the work done in this area. Its core objective however, is Native and Endemic species, or specialised wildlife where individuals or populations are at risk for what may be a variety of reasons. Many endangered birds needing medical care (eg: Takahe, Kiwi and Kakapo) are often flown to Auckland Zoo or

Massey University, Palmerston North. The time and travel involved in sending these birds to the North Island means they are exposed to additional unnecessary stress and delays in treatment, which can impact significantly on their survival. A South Island facility will allow prompt, professional and specialised treatment of these valuable species. There was a great turnout for the recent open afternoon, held in December 2014 as well as an open night in mid-January.

For anyone interested in volunteering, check: www.wildlifehospital.co.nz for full and further details.

To the Editors:

McHughs Forest Park I write about the most beautiful, glorious walk I know of, in Central Canterbury, and beyond. It is an historical Track, over 100 years old, with unique character, in its NATURAL state. I have just learnt, by chance, that in the upgrade, which sure needs it in many places, shingle will be put on the ENTIRE track. The width is 2.5 metres, and depth 6 inches. No mention, not a word of it, in the Management Plan. How can one make a Submission, if there is nothing to submit on? I am alarmed by this extraordinarily ambitious upgrade. I have unanimous support, so far. The track includes numerous stretches, one almost 100 metres, that are perfectly satisfactory as they are. This pristine forest floor, is flat, and suitable for all ages. I have been in there, after rain in Winter - the flooding is minor, and has disappeared after a day or two. At the inaugural Public meeting, Aug. 19th, 2013, the local community stated: a) to retain the unique, wild character of the forest. b) t o upgrade existing track, whilst retaining its NATURAL character. Surely, the Selwyn District Council, and the Committee, had a duty to inform the

people, of this grandiose upgrade, before it went for tender. Why was this decision, of such magnitude, made behind closed doors? Where is the democracy? Have your say - what a joke. A motor-car could fit on this Highway, with room to spare. Is there any possibility of the width being reduced, to say 1.5 metres? Footnote: There is a Reserve (C.C.C) in South Christchurch. It is named after my Father, Ernle Clark. Cashmere folk pour through in droves walkers, runners, bicycles, and prams. The width of this shingle path, is 1.3 metres.

Michael E. Clark Darfield

To the Editors: It was a shame to read the cricket report last week. As a parent of children who play sport I was very disappointed that a negative spin was put on it. Michael McCaughan is a talented player who has given a lot to the sport. People should be supporting these up and coming young players in our district and commending them for actually continuing to play sport. Might I suggest people stick to positive feedback in the future!

Selwyn residents are being invited to make submissions on a new policy which controls where legal highs can be sold in the district. The selling of psychoactive substances (commonly known as ‘legal highs’) is controlled by the Ministry of Health. The Ministry requires all retailers to have their products tested and approved as safe to be sold. The Ministry also issues licences to retailers to sell the product. Under new legislation, Councils have the option to develop a Local Approved Products Policy. The Psychoactive Substances Regulatory Authority have indicated that it is their intention to take these policies into consideration when deciding whether to approve a licence application. Council policies can only regulate locations where products can be sold and cannot prohibit the sale of legal highs in the District. John Christensen, Christensen Selwyn District Council’s Environmental Services Manager stated that, “the Council does not have the option to ban the sale of legal highs if these substances are approved for sale by the Ministry of Health. However the community have an opportunity to have input into where retailers may establish, through consultation on a Local Approved Products Policy.” The Council’s draft Local Approved Products Policy would only allow psychoactive substances to be sold within parts of the central shopping area of Rolleston. The permitted area for the sale of legal highs runs along Rolleston Drive between the New World and Countdown supermarkets and takes in the area around Countdown. A second permitted area in Rolleston is the vacant land to the north of the Council offices along Rolleston Drive between Norman Kirk Drive and the State Highway. The policy does not allow for products to be sold in any other areas in Selwyn. Consultation on the new policy is open until February 20th, 2015. Council staff will be available to answer questions about the draft policy at a public information session on February 11th, in Rolleston. The policy and a submission form is available online at www.selwyn.govt.nz/haveyoursay

FORRESTER CONTRACT HARVESTING Results: Saturday 31st January Kirwee - bye. Greendale v Sth Malvern This game was played at Greendale, again on grass. There was high cloud, with a cool breeze. E Dalley 2/18 Sth Malvern 152/9 S Edwards 42 D Beatty 27 n.o. B Hawkins 2/26 (NOT Brian) M Millar 2/15 W Lyons 53 n.o N Nayyor 2/19 Greendale 153/6 Greendale won by 4 wickets. Before the start of play, the players and the President, Peter Jenkins, held one minute of silence, in respect of, and memory of, Mr R.E (Rob) Gunn, the Malvern Patron, who has recently died. He had a remarkably long, uninterrupted tenure: 1978 - 2015. (Thirty seven years). Simon Edwards batted with class, and made it look easy, as he usually does. Michael Worsfold took a miraculous catch at slip, with a magnificent dive backwards and towards gully, taking it low down. The Greendale fielding was outstanding, in all departments ground, catching, and throwing. The Greendale innings was exciting. Again, like last week, it was close most of the way. Willie Lyons is an accomplished batsman, producing attractive strokes both sides of the wicket. He has a good eye, and hits the ball hard. He must have studied Bradman on film, as his footwork is amazing - quick, and sure. I much enjoy watching him. Sadly, he won’t be playing in the final. N Nayyor bowled well (spin). He claimed a wicket with his first ball. He walks to the crease, like S. Warne. J. Ferris bowled well, but sent down too many balls well wide of the off-stump. Feb. 7th - FINAL of Judd Cup Sth Malvern v Greendale at Glentunnel.

Fish & Game staffer Scott Pearson displays a salmon caught on the Waimakariri River, Jan 17 2015 A co-ordinated compliance operation on the region’s waterways recently, returned extremely positive results. More than 200 anglers were checked by the team of nineteen consisting of staff and honorary rangers, and only one fisherman was found to be fishing without a licence. Another angler was warned, as it could have been perceived he was targeting salmon without a licence, but he was given the benefit of the doubt on this occasion.

North Canterbury Fish & Game Head of Compliance, Dirk Barr, Barr said the onus is on the angler to prove that they are not targeting salmon or sports fish, which, “given the type of tackle being used and the locations some of these unlicensed anglers are fishing, could be very hard for them to do. “The argument that, ‘I was only fishing for Kahawai’ doesn’t really stack up when you’re in a boat with a licenced fisherman who is fishing for salmon and you are using the same lure,”

Dirk commented. The decision to check anglers on the regions ‘big’ rivers and lakes coincided with an increase in angling pressure, as the peak of the salmon and trout seasons approach. John pointed out that, “the majority of salmon anglers are doing it right, and given the capital outlay on equipment, they realise that a few extra dollars for a licence is a whole lot better than losing all their gear.” Along with the one unlicensed angler, a further twelve received notices for ‘failing to produce’ their licence when asked. It is a requirement of the Fresh Water Fishing Regulations that an angler carries their licence on their person at all times while fishing, and those who fail to do so are issued with a notice, requiring them to provide their licence to a Fish & Game office within seven days. John added, “this is a particularly ‘niggly’ offence as it just causes everyone an inconvenience and can so easily be avoided by carrying your licence in your jacket or tackle box.” “Most anglers were very happy to see the rangers and were often keen for a chat about the state of the fishery, or what’s been caught and where. This can make it quite timeconsuming to check only a few licences, but it’s also a very rewarding opportunity to engage with our stakeholders,” John concluded. With the main salmon run just beginning, further compliance monitoring is planned over the coming weeks.

MALVERN NEWS DEADLINES: Editorial 5pm Monday Preparations for the South Island Agricultural Field Days in March are well underway, with an increase in both exhibitor and visitor numbers expected at the event’s new site in Kirwee. The Field Days will take place from March 25th to 27th, Courtenay Road, Kirwee, on forty hectares of land South Island Agricultural Field Days (SIAFD) purchased after it outgrew its previous leased site near Lincoln University - where it had been based for the past 32 years. Organising committee chairman Alastair Robinson commented that while there is still a lot to do, the event has a good committee, and they are confident everything will get done on time. SIAFD usually attracts about 25,000 visitors over the three days, although the committee is hoping the larger site and new location will result in even more coming through. “We have registered 450 exhibitors, which is 150 more than our previous event. We’re hopeful that we’ll have more people through the gate than previously also, but time will tell,” Alastair added. The new rectangle block at Kirwee is a better shape than the former site in Lincoln and should be easier for exhibitors

Visitors view an equipment demonstration at a previous South Island Field Days event. to work with. Entry into the event will also be easier and more logical. The previous site was a triangle, which meant exhibitors in the far corners were sometimes overlooked by visitors. A feature of this year’s Field Days is a half-circle centre-pivot irrigator, which will operate at the front of the site. The irrigator is up and running to ensure a good crop of grass for harvest equipment demonstrations. SIAFD organising committee member Daniel Schat added that crops for demonstrations have been drilled and sites allocated.

YES WE CAN BE IN TWO PLACES!

The increase in exhibitor numbers this year shows the community is continuing to support the Field Days and wants to be a part of it. “It’s only a $15 entry fee so it’s very minimal,” Daniel stressed. “South Island Field Days are all about checking out that bit of equipment that you’re interested in buying and seeing it working,” he said. About 100 pieces of machinery, including tractors, headers, mowers and seed drills, are put through their paces throughout the event. Daniel concluded by saying that the Field Days couldn’t be possible without the huge number of volunteers who help with setting up, running the event on the day, and the clean up afterwards.”

Your local & reliable trades-

Russ and Fred, two friends, met in the park every day to feed the pigeons, watch the squirrels and discuss world problems. One day Russ didn't show up. Fred didn't think much about it and figured maybe he had a cold or something. But after Russ hadn't shown up for a week or so, Fred really got worried. However, since the only time they ever got together was at the park, Fred didn't know where Russ lived, so he was unable to find out what had happened to him. A month had passed, and Fred figured he had seen the last of Russ, but one day, Fred approached the park and, lo and behold, there sat Russ! Fred was very excited and happy to see him and told him so. Then he said, “for crying out loud Russ, what in the world happened to you?” Russ replied, “I have been in jail.” “Jail!” cried Fred. “What in the world for?” “Well,” Russ said, “you know Sue, that cute little blonde waitress at the coffee shop where I sometimes go?” “Yeah,” said Fred, “I remember her. What about her?” “Well, the little gold-digging witch figured I was rich and she filed rape charges against me; and, at 89 years old, I was so proud that when I got into court, I pleaded 'guilty'.” “The judge gave me thirty days for perjury!”
