Hard work has opened doors to a world most only dream of for Hororata’s Nicole HamiltonHamiltonCross - a life travelling the USA playing a sport. Steve Adams (NBA) and Scott Dixon (Nascar) have made it happen, but is this local Hororata girl about to take her first steps toward doing the same? Is Nicole’s dream about to become reality? Over a year ago Nicole Hamilton -Cross signed with college recruiting company USA Sports Connect, a specialist company who guide New Zealand High School students through the process of obtaining a US college scholarship to play sport, while studying for a degree. Since then, with the aid of USA Sport Connect, Nicole has been contacted by USA universities and their college golf coaches all keen to get her enrolled and playing on their college golf team. Nicole has just accepted a four year scholarship to study and play golf at Western Illinois University, a Division 1 college, ranked in the top fifty of colleges out of 1,000 plus universities in the USA. Nicole’s level of golf has helped in getting a scholarship, but it has been her academic results which have opened most doors. Good NCEA Level 1 and 2 results, plus a great US

Nicole’s next move on the road to success has been carefully considered. Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) score have Nicole at a level where the top colleges were looking to sign her. At one point Nicole had twelve colleges, including Harvard and Yale, emailing and skyping her because they knew academically she would be granted entry into their university. Nicole learnt quickly through these contacts, regardless of how good you are at sport all colleges firstly look at how well you have been doing at school (Nicole was a student at

Hororata Primary School, then Darfield High School). Nicole said, “an university is there to have people gain degrees and graduate. If they decide you wouldn’t be able to achieve this it makes it very hard to get a scholarship, based solely on your sport. After considering all approaches,

it was Western Illinois University’s scholarship Nicole chose to accept, as she felt it was the best fit for her. This college allows Nicole to obtain a Forensic Science Degree, plus travel the US playing golf with a very strong, college, golf team.

The scholarship also offered the best financial package, being worth over $115,000NZ for the four years she is studying. Nicole added, “Mum and Dad have a lot less to pay for my tuition and books and I should hopefully graduate with no student loan.” Another reason to choose this particular university is that Nicole would also like to work toward becoming a professional golfer. Her Western Illinois college coach, Luke, Luke has been a golf pro on the US circuit and has offered to assist Nicole with her transition from amateur to professional in four years’ time, and she believes she is in the right hands to achieve this. And the plan B - if Nicole doesn’t become a professional golfer she jokes she might join the FBI as a forensic scientist. “I’d look pretty flash with a FBI jacket on,” she laughed. So at the end of this year when most teenagers will be looking to take a long summer break, Nicole will be sorting out last minute things before she leaves early in January 2016 to start living her USA dream. And

Nicole’s advice to other teenagers looking to do the same; “if you work hard, your dreams may one day come true.”

The News wishes Nicole all the best success for her future and we look forward to being able to report on her progress.

While it was pretty in its early stages as this garden in Darfield will attest - the eventual depth of snow cover caused massive damage to plants, trees and shrubs - as well as guttering. It may have been pretty while falling, but the snow definitely wasn’t so a few days later when the thaw set in and many in the area still had to deal with no power. Lines’ repair staff battled appalling conditions in their attempt to restore supply, which in many cases took days. While most folk living in the country have a Plan B with nonelectric cooking and heating options, plus a generator to drive water pumps etc - there were still a few who took to social media to vent their displeasure at the lack of power, lack of phone, lack of cellphone and snow covered roads! There were an equal number of those prepared to reply, and sometimes not very sympathetically! There were some fabulous snowmen, snow families and, snowpets constructed around the district - some showing a cons ider able degree of creativity. Gnomes Alpine Sports were rapt with the arrival of the snow as were the ski-fields - heralding a great season ahead.

2015 has seen a busy start to the year on the running calendar and Malvern’s Road Runners have been taking part in events all around the country. The Selwyn Sports Trust held their second annual Lake Crichton Series – Triathlon and Duathlon. This series was a fantastic opportunity to get a taste for these disciplines in a professional, yet encouraging, atmosphere. A well run and organised event, with various entry options, saw a range of age and ability levels get involved. Sarah Wright, Wright Hamish and Abby Thornley, Thornley Hannah Perkins, Perkins Holly, Holly Ben and Steph

Kimber, Kimber Harry, Harry Will, Will Lucy and Tim Cookson were all part of triathlon teams, while Shane Thornley, Thornley Jayde Mayberry, Mayberry Jo Steven and Anna Walsh took on the series individually. This was a perfect training ground for Tim and Lucy Cookson who competed in the half distance, team section at the Challenge Wanaka. Lucy managing a respectable time for her team in the half marathon run despite the heat. Harry and Will Cookson made it to the podium in the children’s section of the Challenge Wanaka Triathlon. Mt Oxford Odyssey and Lake Rotoiti had Lucy Cookson along with Shane and Susan Thornley

completing the big off road miles. Abby Kingston and Jayde Mayberry loved the Hanmer Four Square 10 kilometres, both finishing around their 55 minute goal times. “There’s an increasing number of trail events on offer and Road Runners is a good way to get some speed training in, to complement other training,” said Jayde Mayberry of Malvern Road Runners. You n g er Roa d Ru n n er participants are strongly representing Malvern in and around the country too; Matthew Ashworth, Ashworth Ethan Rose and Harry Cookson all qualified for the Canterbury Schools’ Cross Country in their respective age groups. Fellow Road Runners Julie Crequer and Jo Steven were participants in the Speights Coast to Coast this year. Julie was half of a two day team and Jo ran the mountain run. Jo has also gone on to complete the Motatapu Marathon in far less than favourable weather conditions, but enjoyed the event all the same. Michael Smith accepted the task of the St Clair half marathon achieving a great result of one hour 42 minutes with an overall placing of eightieth out of 1,200 participants. Michael then went on to compete in the Christchurch Half Marathon, while wife Julie and fellow Malvern Road Runner Roz Sleight did the ten kilometres. There’s a lot going on in the Malvern running community with people already setting their sights on their next mission, be it a five kilometre run, a full marathon or something in between. For anyone thinking about entering a race, have already entered one and need some jollying along, or in need of some extra fitness for winter sport, then the Malvern Road Runners is perfect! The fifth Equestrian Rogaine to be held in Canterbury, raised over $2,500 for the GRACI Foundation (Gynaecology Cancer Research Trust). Held on hill farmland at Brooksdale near Springfield on June 14th, riders were fortunate to have a perfect day for the event. Teams of two to four on horseback, navigated with a map to score checkpoints marked on it. The teams had three hours to score as many

points as possible, with each checkpoint having a different points value. The winning team of Heath Macfarlane, Macfarlane Sandra Tarrant and John Murphy successfully scored all twenty nine checkpoints, within the three hours. Jodie Lockwood and Nicole Bulford (Rolleston) were the first women’s team and Sophia Roper and Chloe Bolingford (Governors Bay) were first junior women. Teams came from as far as

Oamaru for the event and the youngest rider was eight-yearold Trent Marshall of Leeston. N um erous local S elw yn businesses supported the event with prizes and this was much appreciated by organisers. Organisers are already looking forward to planning the next Rogaine event which is sure to be even more popular, as well as a great fundraising opportunity.

As people become increasingly health conscious and aware of the need to foster wellbeing, martial arts remains a popular choice for health and fitness. Proactive Templeton has been operating for ten years and is part of Christchurch's biggest network of Martial Arts’ schools. Opening in October 2004, they now have well over one hundred students ranging in age from four years old, to some students in their sixties. Proactive is a self defence based martial art suitable for all age groups, whether it is fitness, confidence, coordination or self defence it offers something for everyone. Rolleston resident Jacki Wollard has been involved with Proactive for seven years. Beginning as a white belt with no prior experience, she is now a 1st degree black belt. Along

Canterbury community groups are being called upon to provide project submissions for BNZ’s Closed for Good 2015. BNZ will once again shut up shop for a day and send its staff into Canterbury to work with community groups – and project submissions are now open. Closed for Good will see the bank shut each of its stores on September 2nd and up to 5,500 BNZ staff will get stuck i n, helpi ng comm uni ty organisations around New Zealand. BNZ CEO urged Canterbury community groups to make the most of the free labour and skills on offer. “Last year in Canterbury there were 53 separate groups helped, with 164 of our people putting in a good eight hour day. If community groups had to pay for that labour cost, you

could say we saved the region about $19,350 (and that’s at basic minimum wage rate), he said. “But it’s so much more than that. Our people love getting into the community, seeing their customers in a different light and making a difference, so please – tell us how we can help. Closed for Good for projects have included fence painting, planting trees or cleaning up public spaces, but he was quick to encourage Canterbury community groups to think broadly and make the most of how the BNZ team can help. “We want organisations to look at all the skills our people have and can share. We can help you by running a financial literary or scam savvy workshop, or writing a financial or marketing plan, he said. “This is the fifth time I have been part of Closed for Good,

Our mid Winter ou ng took us to the Christchurch Botanic Gardens and seventeen hardy members braved a very cold, but ďŹ ne, sunny, Canterbury day. We were amply rewarded with a guided tour by a lively chap called Brian who had a real passion for his job. His enthusiasm rubbed o on us and we were soon marching round and apprecia ng all we saw in these 150 year old gardens. Of the 22 full me sta only eight are actually gardeners and they do a wonderful job keeping everything in such pris ne condi on. We spoke with David the person in charge of the famous herbaceous border, and even on such a cold day he was busy working there, explaining how he goes about the job. A highlight was being allowed behind the scenes and being given a tour of the propaga ng area in the new visitors’ centre. Brian explained how it is climate controlled and blinds and shades respond to the weather condi ons, we found it quite fascina ng. A5er saying goodbye to Brian we were welcomed by Karen who took us on an extended tour of the gardens and the park on the Caterpillar. Being such a cold day she provided rugs for us and what with our scarves, gloves and hats, goodness knows what we looked like as we trundled through the gardens. Karen was also very informa ve and gave us the history of many trees and plants and with the sun shining on the trees it was magical. She stopped for us to visit the owering plant house and the display of Cyclamens was amazing and it was warm in there! By now it was well past 1pm so lunch was really welcome and a good hot drink was much appreciated. A quick stop at a certain garden centre on the way home rounded o another great day for us. Keep warm. Happy days.

Selwyn MP Amy Adams has welcomed figures from Chorus which show that the average internet speed in Selwyn’s rural areas has more than doubled thanks to the Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI). “The figures provided to me by Chorus show that the average copper line connection speed has increased from 3.9 Megabits per second (Mbps) in November 2011 to 8.9 Mbps in April this year,” Amy said. Amy, who is also the Minister for Communications, stated that some of the 3,360 broadband connections in the Selwyn RBI zones had achieved speeds of up to 71.0 Mbps. “That is an astonishing improvement when you consider that back in 2011, before the RBI

Page 11

was underway, the maximum connection speed was 8 Mbps,” she commented. Unlike Ultrafast broadband in towns such as Lincoln and Rolleston, which is delivered via fibre, the Chorus part of RBI is delivered by copper phone lines which have been upgraded to provide significantly faster broadband. “41 out of 46 cabinets around Selwyn have been upgraded already under the RBI,” Amy advised. The five remaining upgrades and their timeframe for completion are as follows: • Windwhistle - due to be completed in August 2015 • Greendale - due to be completed in September 2015

• Bankside - due to be

completed in October 2015

Offering New Ploughing Service

• Southbridge - due to be

completed in November 2015 • Springfield - due to be

completed in May 2016 Despite all of the work being carried out under the RBI to upgrade rural networks, Amy noted that residents in some areas had not been taking advantage of the new level of service available. “I would encourage residents and businesses in our smaller towns that are looking to improve their internet service to talk directly with their Internet Service Provider to find out how they can be connected to the upgraded network,” Amy concluded.

Selwyn residents will soon have a new cycleway to enjoy as construction has started on the Rolleston to Lincoln Cycleway. The nine kilometre cycleway will run along Lowes Road, Lincoln Rolleston Road and Boundary Road. From there, cyclists will be able to connect up to the existing Rail trail path which runs north from Lincoln to Christchurch through Prebbleton, and south to Little River. The off-road track will form part of a wider mainly off road cycling network connecting the main townships together in eastern Selwyn. This includes a planned R o l l e s t o n t o Te m p l et o n connection, the recently opened Springston-Lincoln cycleway and proposed future plans to upgrade Gerald Street through Lincoln to include separate cycling facilities. Other cycleways are also planned between Leeston to Doyleston and Glentunnel to Coalgate. Construction of the Rolleston to Lincoln cycleway started in late April with works advancing from each end. Asset Transportation M a n a ge r A n d r e w M az e y commented that the construction process has been good so far. “The section from Lincoln through to Springs Road has now been sealed. Between Springs and Shands Road the track is in the process of being excavated, boxed and filled, with around half of this work now complete. At Rolleston the urban section of

cycleway along Lowes Road and between Lincoln Rolleston Road and Goulds Road is progressing, with the installation of kerb and channel prior to the pathway, being installed alongside it.” Minister of Transport Simon Bridges announced earlier this year that Selwyn was one of thirteen areas to receive funding from a new Urban Cycleway Fund. The development of the $1 million cycleway is being jointly funded; $700,000 being

provided by the New Zealand Transport Agency (of which $300,000 is coming from the government’s Urban Cycleway Fund) and the remainder by the Selwyn District Council. This funding assistance has enabled Council to bring forward the project by eight years from that originally planned. The Rolleston to Lincoln cycleway is expected to be completed in time to be ready to use in spring.

Chamberlain Agriculture Ltd has just purchased a minimum pass Horsch Terrano MT deep cultivator to provide farmers with a new service to the area and which solves the problem of soil compaction, breaking up any plough pan and crop stubble incorporation in a cost effective way. This Horsch cultivator gives a deep loosening of the soil up to 400mm, with minimal vertical mixing to help prevent stones from coming to the surface and 510mm discs and steel disc packer for rolling rough soils. Being 4.4m wide, it leaves a level surface suitable for drilling.

This machine can

perform these tasks in one pass, making it very efficient in time and cost. Soil compaction There has been an increase in the amount of green feed crops being grown in Malvern with many farmers offering dairy support.

With this comes a

high level of soil compaction as stock are often break fenced and feed from the same area for a longer period of time. The Horsch Terrano MT has 11 ripping tines which make an excellent job of breaking up the soil without leaving a ridging effect as some sub-soiling machines do. Plough pan This is a level of soil that becomes hard after repeated years of ploughing to the same depth which can stunt deep root growth and inhibit the movement of water to deeper soil levels in drought years. The deep cultivation method of the Horsch Terrano MT allows better

nutrient absorption, aeration and less run off when conditions become wet. It helps moisture move throughout the full soil profile and encourages roots to grow deeper, leading to improved yields.

This is especially

important when establishing deep rooting crops such as lucerne and fodder beet. Stubble incorporation Chamberlain Agriculture conducted some trials on high standing stubble, which resulted in the stubble being mixed evenly throughout the whole working depth (350mm). In the trial after just one pass, the machine left a broken up plough pan, well incorporated stubble and a seed bed. Leading them to come to the conclusion that the Horsch Terrano MT was excellent in the way it incorporated stubble.

Why Have Chamberlain Agriculture Chosen This Machine? Three different minimum pass deep cultivating machines were trialled with each brand having a different configuration and number of discs, tines/legs and rollers. A few interested local farmers were contacted and trials were held on different soil types and conditions in order to observe each machine’s capabilities. The results from each brand were discussed with the farmers involved and after considering their requirements, the Horsch Terrano MT was chosen.

Dean Chamberlain from Chamberlain Agriculture is offering to demonstrate the machine to interested farmers on their land. He suggests perhaps getting a few neighbours together and seeing the benefits the machine offers. “Please don’t hesitate to call for further information,” Dean added.

The inaugural McIlroy and Sheat Brothers’ Trophy was played for on Saturday with a result that unfortunately didn’t favour Darfield Div 1. The game, planned for the Darfield grounds, had to be transferred to Southbridge at the last minute, as Darfield was well and truly covered in snow. The trophy has been donated by Darfield’s Scott and Blair McIlroy and Southbridge’s Michael, Jarrod and Cameron Sheat. Sheat Both sets of brothers

have completed one hundred plus games for their respective Clubs and this trophy also acknowledges their long term support and commitment. Contested annually by Darfield and Southbridge Div 1 rugby teams, in round robin matches only, the Cup is not up for grabs in knockout finals matches. Should a match be drawn, the previous year’s winner retains the Trophy. “We all feel that games in the past between the two sides

h ave been ex tr em ely competitive contests,” said both groups of bothers, “but more importantly the matches have been played in good spirit and enjoyed by both players and spectators.” The Clubs involved feel that the addition of the McIlroy and Sheat Brothers’ cup to will only add to the occasion of the participating games and ensure that the contribution of both sets of brothers will be remembered in years to come.

Selwyn Aquatic Centre in Rolleston marks two years in operation this week, and is celebrating with a birthday party on Sunday. On Sunday, June 28th there'll be a range of birthday activities for all ages running at the centre. The pool foyer will be decorated to mark the occasion, there will be a giant birthday cake and a special giveaway to all two-year olds as they arrive at the pool. For younger families, the movie Winnie the Pooh will screen, so families can relax and enjoy this family favourite from the comfort of the heated pools. A pool party – complete with inflatables, water rollers (inflatable walking wheels on water), music, games and giveaways has also been planned. Selwyn Youth Council will be running their pop-up café and

the Rolleston Lions will provide a sausage sizzle outside. The Selwyn Aquatic Centre was opened on June 24th, 2013 and in its first year the had 258,000 admissions, exceeding its target of 250,000. Centre manager Kathy Moore commented that the second year has been equally successful. “Our admission target for this year is 270,000, and to date we have had just over 278,000 people through the doors,” she added. “Overall we expect to achieve 280,000 by the end of June.” Kathy said the range of events held at the facility continues to expand including Swim Canterbury swim meets which have attracted swimmers from all over the South Island. “We have also held bug polo, flipperball competitions, race nights for our swim school and

squad members, adult learn to swim sessions and a variety of aquarobics classes,” Kathy added. “In addition we provide space for scuba diving clubs, sports clubs and teams, physiotherapists and their clients, and Burwood hospital patients. Recently we hosted New Zealand Cricket’s high performance unit for some pool training.” Kathy confirmed that the Centre’s swim school continues to be at capacity with around 1,400 children enrolled in lessons each term. “We’re delighted at the way the Aquatic Centre is continuing to grow, and at how well used it is by people from right across the district.”

Check the SDC website for further details of the Centre’s birthday bash.

A Scottish woman went to the local newspaper office to publish the obituary for her recently deceased husband. The obits editor informed her that there is a charge of 50 cents per word. She paused, reflected and then said, "Aye, well then, let it read, 'Angus MacPherson died'." Amused at the woman's thrift, the editor told her that there is a six word minimum for all obituaries. She thought it over for a while and that said, "Ach, in that case, let it read... 'Angus MacPherson died. Bagpipes for sale'."
