Championships. The three Darfield High School students were selected from riders throughout Canterbury at trials held in October last year and February this year. Katherine Hadler (another DHS student) was also selected as a reserve for the team. There were thirteen areas from throughout New Zealand represented at the Championships. The event consisted of three phases dressage, cross country and show jumping held over three days. The cross country course proved challenging and rain

leading up to the event meant the ground conditions were soft. However, the Canterbury riders stepped up to the challenge and won the event. The first time Canterbury have done so in ten years. It came down to a close finish with only 1.4 faults separating Canterbury from the second placed team from the West Coast. The Canterbury girls had some excellent individual results with Niamh also placing third and Charlotte fourth in the DC division (18 years and under), and Sophie seventh in the MT division (14 years and under).

Sadly when the judging was over and the winner was announced the Hororata Village Bar and Café’s Sausage Roll wasn’t named as the ‘Best’ in New Zealand - it was however named as the ‘Best’ in Canterbury and in the top five in New Zealand fighting off fierce competition for the spot. The quest to find the best NZ iconic ‘Sausage Roll’ was undertaken over a six week period in a competition run by the Coast radio station.

Masterchef Brett McGregor and Brian Kelly of the Coast had a job most folk just wouldn’t want to undertake (yeah right!) that of finding the best Sausage Roll in New Zealand. The overwhelming quantity (and quality) of contestants was

narrowed down to just five for final consideration and here’s where Hororata Village Bar and Café came into their own. They were alerted to their finals status at the end of April and told their Butcher’s Beef Roll (a massive Sausage Roll!) was one of only five being considered for the top slot. Then came the wait for the judges’ decision (which went deservedly to Ward Street

Depot, Dunedin - understandably they were a tad disappointed, but for those of us in Malvern we can still partake of Canterbury’s best. “Since making the finals everyone is keen to try our Butcher’s Beef Roll,” said Hororata Village Bar and Café’s co-owner Jarnia Kupe. “We’re selling out every day,” she concluded.

Brett McGregor & Brian Kelly discuss the obvious merits of the Hororata Bar & Café’s Butcher's Beef Roll.

On August 26th, and for the fifth time, organisers of Oxford’s Wearable Arts event will again present an outstanding evening of entertainment. But before the audience get to see the creativity of those who are competing there’s a lot of hard work going on in the background, and not the least of it is the attraction of more entries. Prizes for the first placegetters in both the adult and the student sections are outstanding, consisting of not only the kudos of taking the win but also flights and tickets to WOW in Wellington. This biennial event now has a firm place in the district’s arts’ calendar with entries coming from far and wide. “Last show we had a total of thirty entries from students and adults,” commented one of the organisers, “and this year we would love to see even more entries from surrounding Canterbury schools. We would really like to encourage local schools to get involved. It is a huge learning curve and confidence builder for a young student beg inn ing with designing a costume, before implementing that design, and then in most cases, showcasing it themselves on a stage, in front of an audience.” The Wearable Arts evening takes place in the Oxford School Hall - which has the capacity to hold 400 people. by Oxford Farmers Market) - all first place-getters will have their costumes displayed in the Oxford Art Gallery. “It is always exciting to see what students come up with,” commented one of the event’s organising committee, Jane Anderson of Oxford School. “There are some very talented young people out there who have a natural flair for creating something special. I always say to both students and adults contemplating entering to ‘give it a go’,” she added. “The emphasis is always on encouraging them to take that next step to enter and then enjoy the experience. It is a lovely, friendly atmosphere during the night and everyone in past shows has enjoyed themselves enormously,” Jane ended.

Adults: • Open (see above) • Market Day Add to this high quality entertainment and the whole being presented with the benefit of professional lighting and sound system it’s adding up to being a great night of outstanding performance. Anyone passing the Darfield Library over the next week or so - shouldn’t! They should take the time to call in and check out the quilt on display in front of the Library’s noticeboard. The quilt top was put together under the direction of the ‘Malvern Material Girls’ at the Community Picnic, held on Waitangi Day, in the Darfield Reserve. Picnickers were invited to have a go on a sewing machine, joining the pieces which eventually made up the quilt top. People aged from four to well into their eighties all had a go and the top was completed on the day. “Bronwyn Bronwyn Hamilton of 'Quilts and Quilting' donated the batting and backing, as well as doing an excellent job of quilting to produce a first class quilt,” reported one of the ‘Malvern Material Girls’, Sharon Kellock. Kellock “The quilt is on display so that those members of the public who helped create it can check out their work! “The quilt will be given away to a deserving member of the Malvern Community, and we are asking for nominations (they can be put in the box in front of the quilt until May 20th) to suggest someone worthy. It may be someone who's having a hard time, someone who has helped out in the Community, or

nothing more than, just because!” ‘Malvern Material Girls’ meet at the library three times a month and welcome anyone who enjoys ‘stitching’ of any kind (“sorry no children though,”

Sharon added). Community Librarian Isobel Milward is keen to see more Community Groups using the Library facility and commented that rooms are available for a reasonable charge.

What the hell is an SSD? That’s the ques on An SSD drive (Solid State Drive) is like a big USB s ck or USB flash drive - which are the same things. Why do we use them? Well some basic maths: Your usual spinning hard drive has pi ful informa on seek mes when compared to the non-spinning, non-moving SSD. How much quicker? Well that’s complicated and technical but think of it like the difference between dial up and ADSL broadband. Vastly different. OK why aren’t we using them? Well they are expensive, but are coming down in price rapidly. At the moment a Seagate 1000Gb (1Tb) spinning hard drive is $91. whereas the 1TB SSD drive is $138. Last year it was between $400. and $600. while the year before it was $1000. or more; so you can see the rapid con nuing price drop. You can get one to replace the slower one in your PC or laptop as they have adapters to fit all machines. On the new machines I sell, it is about a 50/50 split - regular hard drive against SSD. The con nuing story of compu ng is the rapid pace of its evolu on. Changing mes - and you know we are only in the ‘Valve Radio Days’ of compu ng! Hold on because things are only going to escalate even further!

May 1st was the first day of Pink Ribbon Breakfast month and over the course of the month, more than 3000 Kiwis will invite their friends or colleagues for breakfast, to raise funds for Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand (BCFNZ). BCFNZ hopes to top last year’s total of over 3,200 breakfasts across New Zealand, which were attended by 90,000 people and raised $1.7 million. Proceeds from this year’s Pink Ribbon Breakfasts will go towards breast cancer research, with a focus on support for clinical tr i al s, i m mu no th er a p ie s, preventing the spread of cancer, improved clinical practice for better patient outcomes, and treatments for advanced breast cancer. They will also help provide breast awareness education, as well as support for patients. With more than 3,000 Kiwis diagnosed and 600 a year still dying of breast cancer, New Zealand doctors and researchers have a vital role to play. BCFNZ helps fund clinical trials and studies, as well as the development of new medicines here in New Zealand. 90-95% of women who are diagnosed have no family history of the disease. An unique Pink Ribbon Breakfast will take place on Sunday, May 28th in the West Melton Community Hall - not only to raise much needed funds for this cause, but also to give those attending the opportunity of learning and enjoying the art of scrapbooking/card making. The event is organised by Karen

Page 7

Jones who moved to West Melton and on to a lifestyle block just over three years ago. Having left her job in women’s fashion, the move gave Karen more time for her scrapbooking - something she had been involved with for twelve years. After doing some research Karen found American Scrapbooking company ‘Close To My Heart’ was establishing itself in both Australia and New Zealand. The move to West Melton seemed like the ideal opportunity to join them and so began a worthwhile association between the two. “I was able to enjoy my craft and at the same time get out into the community and meet new people by offering card and scrapbooking classes,” Karen said. “I love to share and show people how easy the craft of memory keeping is and how important it is. I can inspire people to work on their family album and ‘Close To My Heart’ have beautiful kits that are so easy to put together - just like following a sewing pattern. “We have a group that gets together once a month to work on our scrapbooking - which is awesome as we laugh and go down memory lane, while we work on our layouts,” Karen added. Karen’s Pink Ribbon breakfast has been well supported by local businesses and it’s an opportunity for those attending to not only donate to the cause, but to also try their hand at the art of card making or scrapbooking. When the New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards were announced last Saturday, local Hororata farmer, Kerry Higgins, was not only placed Runner Up in the ‘2017 Dairy Manager of the Year’, but was also named as the winner of the Fonterra Farm Source Dairy Management Award, and the Westpac Financial Management and Planning Award. This resulted in Kerry taking home $11,000 in prizes. The judges noted that as a career changer Kerry had brought a high level of professionalism with him to the dairy industry. The Awards event took place at the Auckland Sky City Convention Centre in front of more than 500 attendees. The winners and finalists represent a group of people who are acutely aware of environmental issues and the dairy industry’s role in farming responsibly, it was reported. The Dairy Manager of the Year category consisted of eleven finalists, made up of three females and eight males, aged between 23 and 38 years.

Kerry Higgins from Hororata with his Westpac Financial Management and Planning Award. These finalists all work on farms with herds ranging from 325 to 1340 cows (32 year old Kerry, manages a 1340 herd). Contestants have a one and a half hour’s presentation time with the judges, and judging criteria covers five main topics of everyday farming life: farm overview, power play topic, personal, feed and stock. The finalists represented eleven regions and competed for prizes worth more than $190,000 in total, as well as the honour of winning either the 2017 New Zealand Share Farmer of the Year, New

Zealand Dairy Manager of the Year or the New Zealand Dairy Trainee of the year title. NZ Dairy Industry Awards General Manager Chris Keeping said the 33 finalists are the cream of the crop from the 424 entries received, and it was a hard-fought battle. “The feedback was that the calibre of entrants in all regions was outstanding, making the judges’ job very difficult. It is clear that the New Zealand dairy industry is in good health with passionate farmers, managers and trainees with positive attitudes, leading the way,” commented Chris. “The finalists were acutely aware of the importance of farming responsibly, with regards to both environmental issues and animal management. It’s extremely positive to see such dedication to these issues within the industry. “It was fantastic to attend all eleven regional finals and feel the excitement of the wins and see the journey each finalist has taken, both professionally and personally. There is a real mix of age, farming experience and career backgrounds but all had the confidence to handle that next level of judging before these finals.”

Many descendants of the Marshall family live in the Malvern area and will no doubt be planning to attend the forthcoming family reunion to be held in Leeston, February 9th to the 11th, 2018. These descendants hail from Robert and David Marshall who were born in Perthshire, Scotland, and came to New Zealand in the 1860s. Robert arrived in New Zealand in 1861 and managed a farm at Halswell for John Miln before buying land at Lakeside. He married Elizabeth Tod in 1862. Her parents, William and Mary came to New Zealand in 1841 and she was born in Wellington in 1842. They had a family of nine daughters and one son. The farm on the north side of Harts Creek on The Lake Road was called Lochend. After Robert died in 1884 Elizabeth and their son Robert James, James who married Katherine Dixon, Dixon carried on the farm. Of the daughters Mary Jane married John Wilson of Southbridge, Elizabeth married John Oliver Howson from Sedgemere, Janet married Hamilton Winchester of Sedgemere and Alison married Leonard Shearman of Southbridge. T he other daughters did not marry.

‘Blairnathort’ the Marshall home in Scotland. Elizabeth died in 1919 aged 76 years. David and his wife Ann, Ann nee Gibson, Gibson arrived at Lyttelton in 1865 with their family of five. They bought land on The Lake Road about three kilometres south of Robert’s farm and called their farm Lochrin. Both were very involved with the establishment of the first Presbyterian Church in Leeston. Their eldest son James farmed at Doyleston before buying a farm near Ashburton. William Gibson their second son farmed in the Leeston-Killinchy area and their youngest son, David, David farmed at Springston. Synlait Milk has been given the green light to export its Lactoferrin to the United States for use in infant formula and toddler formula. Synlait is the second company in the world to receive a GRAS (Generally Recognised As Safe) notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to use lactoferrin in these applications. A GRAS notice is added to the FDA Register once a food ingredient is scientifically proven to be safe for its intended use. “In time this may open up further opportunities for us and we’re pleased one of our high value, specialty ingredients is now available to infant nutrition companies in the U.S.,” said John Penno, Penno Synlait’s Managing Director and CEO. “The FDA registration process is rigorous and designed with public safety in mind. We fully support any measure aimed at ensuring the safety, quality and

integrity of a nutritional product is genuinely present”. The process took more than six months to complete. A key requirement was a panel of qualified, independent experts concluding, based on the scientific evidence submitted, that Synlait’s Lactoferrin would be safe under the conditions of its intended use. Lactoferrin is an iron-binding protein recognised for its a n t i b ac t er i a l a n d a n t i inflammatory properties. As a naturally occurring milk protein, it is commonly used in infant formula products throughout the world.

The annual Duck Shooting Competition organised by Darfield Hotel continues to be popular, with many teams now ‘regular’ competitors. The Hotel’s publicans, Ray and Debbie O’Connell, sponsored a great line up of prizes which were presented at the nowtraditional opening weekend, Sunday prize giving, at the Hotel.

Rolleston Reserve has come to life with animated dinosaurs, kittens and alien invaders. The reserve is the first park in Selwyn to become a ‘Magical Park’ where children are guided by an app that allows them to herd cats, see dinosaurs brought back to life, and witness what an alien invasion would look like. “The app involves children in a number of fun tasks at parks including finding dinosaur eggs, and herding kittens which provides a great workout,” commented Selwyn

District Council Senior Events and Recreation Advisor Dave Tippett. Tippett “The app combines technology and physical activity in a free engaging activity for families to try out.” The ‘Magical Park’ app is designed for children aged 611. It can be downloaded for free from Google Play or the ITunes App Store. It is compatible with iPhone 5+, iPad 3+, or android devices with a compass, gyroscope, accelerometer and GPS. The average playing time for

kids using the app is 30-60 minutes and in this time youngsters typically cover between 700 metres and two kilometres. “Magical Park is being trialled at Rolleston Reserve and if it proves popular we will look at introducing it at some other parks across Selwyn,” Dave added. Signage has been installed at Rolleston Reserve near the skate area with information on how to participate in Magical Park.

Agstaff are proud to partner with Federated Farmers to manage and implement, the Kaikoura skilled worker and volunteer initiative. The initiative was established in January 2017 and matches the requirements of earthquake damaged farms with the bestskilled workers to complete repair work. Agstaff have built a strong reputation for sourcing high quality, reliable employees for every type of farming operation in Canterbury for over fifteen years, and as such, they were an obvious choice to take charge of the Government funded project. As of April 13th, 2017, Agstaff had provided over fifty skilled workers and volunteers to 47 farms and organised in excess of 6,000 labour hours over the past ten weeks. There has been an outs ta ndi ng amo unt of progress made so far, however, the initiative is far from complete. The recent adverse weather caused landslides, flooding, and exacerbation of existing damage and more skilled workers are now needed to assist with recovery work. “The initiative has been well received by local farmers and they have been impressed, not only with the high level of workmanship, but the sheer dedication of skilled workers and volunteers. Complete strangers from all over the country and beyond have been banding together with the same goal in mind, which is to get farms up and running again. We are now looking for skilled workers for the more technical

jobs: fencing, dairy, and water reticulation to name but a few. Fencing staff are particularly in short supply. We are working with Rural Support to prioritise and are having to split the available staff by having work done in two day, rotational increments to keep it fair to all,” said Vaughn Beazer, Beazer Agstaff Supervisor for the Blenheim/ Clarence area. The initiative is funded with $600,000 from the Government through the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), Federated Farmers, and Agstaff. The first point of contact for farmers seeking to register their needs, and for volunteers and skilled workers to register their interest, is via the ‘0800

farming’ number. This centralised resource is still active and has been critical to collecting data to assess and match farmers needs with the best skilled workers for the job. “This truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity to gain valuable experience in some truly spectacular back country. The progress so far has been remarkable, however, there is still so much more to do during this recovery period. The most rewarding thing for me, and the people I place, is a huge amount of satisfaction from seeing the weight being lifted from a farmer’s shoulders and leaving them with a beaming smile and a lot less to worry about,” added Vaughn.

Skilled workers and volunteers help to get farms up and running again.

A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and inquired of his father as to when they could discuss his use of the car. His father said he'd make a deal with his son, "You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible a li9le, and get a haircut… Then we'll talk about the car." The boy thought about that for a moment, decided, he'd se9le for the offer, and they agreed on it. A]er about six weeks his father said, "Son, you've brought your grades up and I've observed that you have been studying your Bible, but I'm annoyed that you haven't had your hair cut." The boy said, "You know, Dad, I've been thinking about that, and I've no ced in my studies of the Bible that Samson had long hair, John the Bap st had long hair, Moses had long hair, and there's even strong evidence that Jesus had long hair." The father replied, "Did you also no ce they all walked everywhere they went?!"
