LOCALS TAKE ON TARGA NZ

Phil and John in action on Special Stage 4 on the outskirts of Timaru The NZ Targa Rally is the Ultimate Road Race, a 6 day motorsport event held on sealed roads. On 27 October it came to the South Island for the first time in its history. Not wanting to pass up the opportunity to be part of What’s coming up Nov.29-Leeston Market. Nov.29-Onwards Southbridge Enchanted Village. Nov.29-St Mark’s Christmas Fair. Nov.30-Ellesmere Historical houses tour. Dec.1-Irwell Rugby club AGM. Dec.5-Leeston Christmas Parade and Market. this prestigious event on their doorstep, Phil Sloan (driver) and John Ferguson (co-driver) competed in in Phil’s Subaru Impreza WRX RA. The rally contained 34 Special Stages covering approximately 750km with

an additional 2,000km of touring stages. The Special Stages included some of the most iconic South Island roads such as the Crown Range, the Catlins, the Queenstown – Glenorchy Road and 3 race tracks, Mike Pero Motorsport Park (Christchurch), Teretonga Park Raceway (Invercargill) and Highlands Motorsport Park (Cromwell). Phil and John placed 35th out of a field of 118 race competitors, which included national and international motorsport competitors. The fast flowing nature of the roads meant that a lot of time was spent trying to stay under the 200 km/h Targa speed limit. Their favourite stage was undoubtedly the Crown Range, with its stunning scenery and tight, fast corners. They completed the 23.7km stage from the bottom of the Queenstown side to the Cardrona Hotel in 12 minutes and 6 seconds; marginally quicker than the 35 minutes it usually takes to cover that distance. The event went without mechanical mishap, thanks to the help of their Leeston Service Crew (James McKay, Jason McMillan and Jeremy Stephens). There was one particularly hair-raising moment on SS34 (GlenorchyQueenstown) when they flew over a brow doing 150km per hour and landed on a loose sealed surface with a sharp corner directly afterwards. Another two cars had already crashed in front, but Phil’s extensive experience on gravel enabled them to take the corner (sideways) and avoid the other crashed cars. Due to

the accident rate, race officials later cancelled this leg of the rally. Phil and John hope to compete in another Targa in either 2015 or 2016. These events can only be attended with the help of sponsors, so they are looking for anyone who can help them attend another Ultimate Road

Race. There are sponsor positions available on the car in varying sizes, and all major sponsors will have their details signwritten on the car for a calendar year. If you wish to become a major or minor sponsor, please contact Phil and John at targa@baselinegroup.co.nz

FRED IS BACK!!!! FRED’S BACK painting Christmas windows again. I have been painting these Christmas images for 30 years and last year was the first year I missed due to weather and commitments. I have enjoyed the reaction and appreciation from the community in general and find people from all ages like them so am glad I can do them this year. I am probably the last man standing when it comes to this hand painted street art.

I have developed two main styles , traditional and comical cartooning, which I often combine in the same job. It has taken me a long time to become fluent and learn to control thin acrylic paint on glass. Confidence and speed are everything: demanding, but a lot of fun. I paint about 25 windows around Selwyn and as far as Darfield and Akaroa. You can contact Fred on either 0272607628 or 3297371.

These photos are examples of Fred’s work. Above the painting on Leeston Pharmacy’s window and below the painting on Leeston Post Shop’s window.

MEETING THE NEW VICAR It was my pleasure to meet with and get to know the Rev’d Lynne Horwood a bit better last week. After Lynne was ordained as an Anglican priest in 1996 she continued to be self-supporting, working as a teacher in Special Education and mainstream settings while ministering as part of the Local Shared Ministry Team in North New Brighton. With looking after two young sons, both of whom are now grown and living independently, (one in Wellington and one in Boston), completing a Master of Education, and supporting husband, John, who works at the Christchurch School of Medicine, life was considerably busy. Later Lynne moved to St Michael's Church School as Deputy Principal and became Priest Assistant in the Parish of St Michael and All Angels. In 2010 Lynne left teaching in order to complete her theological degree and to work for the church full-time. Recently Lynne had a temporary move to Kaiapoi Parish where she had a small taste of a rural flavoured community church. Even though it has been

just a short time, Lynne and John feel that Leeston is a fabulous place to live. Lynne is keen to see the parish grow and all the churches kept in use. She is looking forward to engaging with people and feels it is important to honour the traditions of the past while making the church more accessible and welcoming to the wider community. She is keen to see the Sunday School and All-age Service worship grow. She states that people need to know that God loves them and the church is there for them. Lynne feels a very strong sense of calling to her ministry here with each day bringing a fresh blessing and a renewed sense of privilege at being in this community. She also states that the positive attitude of her congregation has made the transition into Leeston a very smooth one. She says the people have been magnificent - very welcoming and caring, and it has been a delight to come to such a vibrant community in which so many people are actively involved in sharing Christ's love.

THE ELLESMERE DISTRICT HONOURS A GREAT LADY On the 19th October 2014 in Christchurch, the Ellesmere District saw the passing of a very loved lady. Dr Molly Moorhead died at the age of 85. She has been warmly remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, friend, colleague. She was a pioneer in the Selwyn district and something of an anomaly in the farming district. Dr Molly, as she is fondly remembered, began life in the English town of Todmorden near Manchester where, as a child, she enjoyed the freedom of playing on the moors and biking holidays with friends. Training as a doctor meant a 30 minute walk to Todmorden Station every day for 7 years and a walk through the World War 2 bomb-damaged city to medical school. She graduated and married fellow doctor Brian Prendergast and by the time he became the GP in Southbridge they had 2 children. She helped in the medical practise while adjusting to life in a

different country. Three more children were to follow before the couple divorced. It was then that Dr Molly took over the medical practise. It was a challenging time with daily surgery, house calls, emergencies and caring for her family. Locals still talk of her turning up to road accidents with a rain coat buttoned over her nightie and carrying a basket of medical equipment. Her job as the community’s doctor also saw her as district nurse and social worker. Dr Molly became an integral member of the Southbridge and Ellesmere communities, taking her children to rugby,

netball, tennis, guides and scouts. Her children claim that she embraced the 70s and launched herself into activities such as macramé, fondue, and tramping, often setting up her base camp from a pop -up camper. One of her passions, along with music, was travel. She was to take her children on ski holidays and skating trips. She also journeyed to Rarotonga, Italy, China and Zimbabwee. Her involvement with St John deepened when the community fundraised for its first ambulance, a refurbished butcher’s van. Her 20 years of service included intense training for ambulance staff in real-life dramas. The training room at Leeston is still known as the “Dr Molly room”. In 1996 she married local man Geordie Moorehead and together they enjoyed several overseas trip together until Geordie died in 2009. The family state that their Mum’s health was never quite the same after Geordie died and, after a fall in 2011, Dr Molly took up residence in an apartment at the Anthony Wilding Village. At her funeral the St John’s members formed a guard of honour as a tribute to Dr Molly’s involvement and contributions to the Ellesmere district.

LEESTON HISTORIC HOUSES TOUR The Ellesmere Historical Society’s annual local tour will this year visit some of Leeston’s historic homes. It will start at the RSA carpark on the corner of High Street and Leeston Lake Road at 130pm on Sunday 30 November. It will be a walking tour but cars will be provided for those who would find it difficult to walk all the way. Please phone Wendy Dalley, 3291 877, if you would like a seat or for any other enquiries. Houses on High, Gallipoli and Selwyn Streets will be viewed. The former BNZ house was built about 1970 and included a bank vault. The two storied house on Gallipoli Street was owned by the Springs-Ellesmere Electric Power Board and then by the Ellesmere County Council. At the back of the house is a barn which was the first ‘home’ for the

Brownies. The vicarage on the corner of Gallipoli and Selwyn Streets was built in 1924. The Parish Hall next door was built in the early 1900s. It was extended on both sides in 1961 after the creek was diverted to give sufficient room for the larger building. The old parsonage at 9 Selwyn Street was built about 1883. F.J. Smith sold the land from Market Street to the school to the Wesleyan (Methodist) Church for a nominal sum as he had previously done with the church section across the street. The new parsonage on the church section was built in 1941 and later became Ellesby House. The Ionic Lodge (Masonic) built the hall which is now the Pottery Club’s. After the Ionic Lodge closed the Oddfellows Lodge bought the

building. On the corner of Market and Selwyn Streets is the brick building, now a house, which was built by the Masonic Lodge in 1928. Two significant houses are at 3 and 5 Selwyn Street. Number 3 was built for Val and Betty Mason in 1934. Val worked for the SpringsEllesmere Electric Power Board and was Secretary Manager of the Central Canterbury Electric Power Board when he retired in 1969. The house next door was built for Jack and Lesley Purser. Jack was the Manager of the Canterbury Seed Co. in Leeston and was for many years Secretary for the Ellesmere A&P Association. If readers have information about the houses on Gallipoli and Selwyn Streets could they please phone Roger Gilbert on 3243 648. All are welcome to join

the tour which will conclude with afternoon tea at the RSA.

Summer - it’s just a weekend away - whoop whoop!!. The seasons have a huge impact on how we lead our daily lives. This ranges from the food we eat, the drinks we drink, the clothes we wear and the activities we take part in. We even listen to different music: bring on the Christmas carols, I love them. Weather wise it’s still a little precarious at the moment: a frost yesterday and 26 Degrees today, but I’m still crossing my fingers and toes for a white Christmas…… The Summer season also affects the Leeston Market and brings out our green fingered Marketeers in full force. We’ve got bedding plants, vege plants, and even new season potatoes. There are cut flowers gorgeous alstroemeria; all grown locally so don’t delay in brightening up your home, inside and out. How are the letters to Santa going? It’s not far away now, and if you don’t get them posted, you may

miss out on that special something you have asked for. Get the letters written and drop them into the Christmas mailbox at the Leeston Market so they can be sent off to the North Pole. Put pen to paper, write Santa a letter using your favourite stationery, put it in an envelope, stamp it and address it to:

On Friday night 5th December it will be a special evening in Leeston - it’s the Leeston Christmas Parade and not one to be missed: Floats, stalls, SANTA, and loads of fun. The Leeston Marketeers will be onsite at the Christmas Parade so remember to catch up with them too. As the Leeston Market will be held as part of the Christmas Parade festivities, there will not be

VISIT THE ENCHANTED VILLAGE IN SOUTHBRIDGE Come visit Southbridge’s Enchanted Christmas Display! Walk in the door to a delightful display of lights and movement with a miniature village, animated Santas with friends and Christmas trees galore. 15 Years ago, Suzanne discovered a Christmas shop in Australia, and found she quite liked collecting Christmas pieces. 5 Years later Ronnie (her daughter) decided she liked collecting the miniature houses and enjoyed putting them together to make a miniature village. Combining their love of Christmas pieces, Suzanne and Ronnie have built their first display for public viewing in an old shed on Suzanne’s property. “Since our collection grew so big, we decided we wanted to share it with other people” says Suzanne. A f ter 3 months of busy work, it is ready for viewing. Part of the display features the popular lemax collection of musical and lighted miniature

buildings with an assortment of accessories that compliment the village. Ronnie’s newest piece to join the lemax collection is an animated Brewery which bottles spin and barrels nearly fall off an edge. A new thing this year as well is the taxi and police car that run around a track. In another part of the shed are animated Santas and his friends, some of which kids allow kids to get involved with by pushing buttons to get them moving. My granddaughter’s favourite piece is the Santa which wiggles his hips, swings his bells and sings.

The display will be available for viewing from 29 November to 21 December: Open on Fridays 4-9 and Saturday/Sunday 2 – 8. Admission is $2 for adults, children 2-15- $1. 185 Jollies Road Southbridge. 10 minutes from Leeston

CAMPAIGN TARGETS RURAL ROADS Canterbury Road Safety Coordinators have combined resources to run a campaign aimed at making Canterbury roads safer by reducing rural drink driving. Hurunui, Waimakariri, Selwyn, Ashburton, Timaru, Mackenzie and Waimate District Councils are participating in this campaign, which encourages motorists to plan a safe ride home if they drink this summer. “Many people believe drivers who have been drinking have a lower chance of being stopped by police when they drive on rural back roads and in some cases people think they can get away with drink driving in rural areas,” says Selwyn Road Safety Coordinator Ngaire Tinning. “Drink driving is never acceptable. It puts everyone at risk and is one of the leading causes of crashes in Selwyn,” she says. In Selwyn District between 2009 and 2013, there were 153 crashes where alcohol was involved. These crashes resulted in 14 fatalities and 37 serious inju-

ries. Most drink driving crashes occur between Friday evening and Sunday morning. “In many cases when drivers are affected by alcohol, they tend to drive faster and don’t wear seat belts,” says Mrs Tinning. “This mix often results in tragedy.” This is the second year the drink driving road safety campaign has run. It encourages drivers to think about having a sober driver, using the courtesy van, sharing designated driver duties or sleeping over so that people avoid driving when drunk. As part of the campaign, posters, coasters, stickers, bar mats and pens will be given out to hotels and taverns in Selwyn in early December. “Our local hotels and taverns already do a great job with host responsibility, with almost all having courtesy vans,” says Mrs Tinning. “Each year as part of our road safety campaign, we distribute free resources to licenced premises to support their host responsibility activities,” says Mrs

Tinning. Mrs Tinning says that many sports clubs and local business have also wanted to support the campaign and will be distributing the promotional items. “The design is quite humorous and we have found that this approach has worked well across Selwyn District and other parts of Canterbury,” says Mrs Tinning. “The safety campaign ran last year in December and January and was popular then and we are pleased to be able to continue to provide these free resources again this year.” Canterbury Police will be carrying out more random patrols on rural roads over summer to support the road safety campaign. The booze bus will be deployed in rural areas as well as urban areas. Changes to the alcohol limit for drivers over 20 years old will be introduced from 1 December. It is expected that this will result in a reduction in alcohol related crashes in the future.

SOUTHBRIDGE GARDEN CLUB REPORT

The November gathering for the Southbridge Garden Club was a bus trip to the Ashburton area. The first visit was to Janet and David Askin’s garden with its numerous varieties of trees and plants. The garden caused many requests for plant names and David was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic with information. Double and single Azaleas of a wide range of colours and an amazing collection of maples were admired. Members were treated to a refreshing lime and elderberry cordial and biscuits in the pavilion. After a short relax it was back on the bus. Next visit was to Akauni, Dianne and Iain MacKenzie’s beautiful garden. Dianne spoke to members on the history of Akaunui from 1900 to the present day and some of the original plantings of trees made a lovely background to the house

and spacious lawns. Colourful rambling roses, unusual shrubs, wetland plants and woodland areas were enjoyed. After a leisurely lunch, raffles were drawn and more exploring of the garden before boarding the bus. The last visit was to Lakeway Nursery and Garden. The well stocked nursery was tempting and many purchased the attractive plants. A quick visit round the garden presented Rhododendrons, varieties of Maples and Clematis with spacious lawns. December’s gathering is a Christmas lunch at the home of the president, Isabel Cooper and her husband George. Remember to bring a plant for exchange and a plate of finger food goodies. There will be a raffle, a Christmas fun quiz and a sales table.

A LEGEND RETIRES

Turning 65 recently, Kevin Stephens reckons it's a good time to retire from competitive cycling. Kevin is a bit of a legend in Leeston Cycling - he was one of the key people involved in the re-forming of the Club back in 1983, and has ridden every year since. The Club was reborn after Kevin and other locals, who competed in races around Canterbury, got together to set up the Club and "promote cycling in the Leeston area". Since then it has stuck to the same formula that the initial Committee set up low cost handicap racing on a Thursday night over distances which cater for all ages and abilities, and with the handicap nature being the leveller to ensure competitiveness for all participants. The Club also runs its one big race of the year, the Leeston Classic, also on the handicap format but over approx 50km. The Stephens name with the Club has been a bit more than just Kevin - Stan, Bill, Nadine and others were also involved in the Club. His brother Roger and nephew Jaron are still regular riders. Kevin in his younger years was a regular on the Scratch mark (for the fastest riders) and was seen as one of the hardest to beat. Even though he may not be as

quick nowadays, his strength still shows through and it is very rare that he gets dropped from his bunch. It's not only on the road that Kevin has served the Club - he was on the Committee in its inaugural year, then Vice President before taking over the top job from Ron Angland in 1985/1986 plus a couple of other spells in later years, as well as having being on the Committee throughout most of the years as well. In those early days the Club used to also hold racing on the grass track around the Leeston rugby ground. It was seen as one of the best grass tracks in the country, but did need a good deal of work, a lot provided by Kevin. There was also a time spent as handicapper one of those jobs where it is hard to please everyone. On the road, Kevin has his name on most of the Leeston Club trophies somewhere - the main ones that have escaped him understandably relate to the Junior and Development riders. The Club runs a points series and Kevin's name is on the various cups relating to them (they used to be raced over different distances) 10 times, including a three year run over 1996, 97 & 98. He won the Leeston Classic overall in 1987, and

won the cup in memory of his good friend Ron Angland for the first Leeston Club rider to finish the Classic in the years 1995, 98, 99 & 01. Interestingly the Stephens name is also on that Cup another 4 times with Roger and Jaron having won it twice each. With Kevin's racing in the Canterbury and NZ Club scene, he was also awarded the Sportsman of the Year Cup in 1987 from the NZ Professional Cycling Assn (one of the forerunners to what is now Bike NZ). In recognition of his long time with the Club, and being involved both on and off the bike, Kevin was elected as Life Member in 2003 (along with Syd Glasson), and then in 2006 as the Club Patron, a position which he continues to hold. To fittingly finish off his racing career, Kevin won his last two races at Leeston,

the first two of the current season. Riding off the "Go" mark, and with plenty of experience to match his fitness, he was too strong in the final sprints to the line in both. But it was not Kevin's final race. He was talked into riding in the "Source to Sea" race on 8th November, which goes from St Arnaud (Lake Rotoiti) to Westport, doing the Team Relay option with Southbridge's Sandy Harper. Sandy rode the first 60km to Murchison, with Kevin taking over for the 100km down to Carters Beach. It was a hard ride for him as the field had broken up considerably by the time he took over so it was largely by himself. To compound it there was a strengthening headwind over the last 40km. It was a good result however they were the 4th team overall in a time of 5hr36m, and the 1st Mixed team,

so they won their section. There is one of the Club's Cup's that Kevin has not won, the "Plains Express Trophy for the oldest rider in the Leeston Classic". Perhaps there's one for Kevin if he decides to come out of retirement!!! As a footnote, five other Leeston riders did the Source to Sea in the solo sections - Steve Caldwell recorded 4h27m for 18th overall and 5th in his age group, Jim Thomson 5hr16m for 4th in his age group, Mike Jones 5hr29m & Albie Anderson 5hr46m. Matt Caldwell did the 50km course option and was first overall for it in 1hr39m. It was a good effort and weekend for the Leeston crew!

THE ELLESMERE ECHO

TENNIS TALK WITH WILTON ATKINS Canterbury Primary and Intermediate Champs There was a strong Ellesmere contingent at the Canterbury Primary and Intermediate Champs held at Wilding Park November 14th-16th. In the Year 6 grade, Killinchy’s Nathan McKenzie had a good win in his quarter final again defeating Canterbury rep player Liam Barrett. In his semi-final versus Charlie Morrison of St Patricks Bryndwr, McKenzie went down fighting after a sluggish first set to force a tiebreaker in the 2nd set. In the 3rd and 4th playoff against child prodigy Diego Quispe-Kim,McKenzie played some great tennis in what was a high quality encounter, but was unable to get the win. In the year 8 boys Division 2 grade, Irwell’s Will McCorkindale won 4 out of his 5 matches to finish a worthy runner-up. Another runner up place was gained by Ben Smith and Nathan McKenzie in the main draw of the year 6 boys. Playing in the Spring Winds I played an evening of interclub doubles against Killinchy last Tuesday in what seemed like 100km/ hour winds. During the change of ends after losing my service game due to appalling play, my opponent

ELLESMERE CYCLING CLUB The first (moderate) SW'er of the season was something new for riders to contend with in the Leeston race on 6th of November. It was another big bunch finish in the Senior race, with the Scratch riders getting to the front only in the final 200m. In the Development race, Tom Harvey, riding with his arm in plaster rode well to win by a minute from his father Mike (who is also in recovery mode from a badly broken leg).
