THE CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN So it’s that time of year again when we all have to start thinking about Christmas whether we like it or not. For some people this brings excitement and anticipation, for others stress and dread. For me the dread is because of the pressure to not only find the right present for everyone, but also the stress of having to brave the crowds. Just thinking about Christmas shopping gives me a headache! You spend the first hour driving into Christchurch, the second hour looping around stalking people looking for a park. The third, fourth, fifth and sixth hour you’re like a drone, stumbling along with the masses looking like a scene from a zombie apocalypse movie. You finally pick a gift that, let’s face it, someone else has probably bought them as every thing looks the same. You choose your friends’ and family’s

gifts in a haze as you want to get out of the claustrophobia that is a shopping mall. Well personally I am not going through that living hell again! I have decided to buy my gifts locally. This means I will not only save a lot of time, but there will be no crowds or lack of parking. I will also find unique gifts that will not be the same as everybody else’s on Christmas Day. I will be supporting our local community and encouraging sustainability. So what is there on the high street of Leeston to wrap-up for under the Christmas tree, or put in a stocking? Do you want to get your loved one some new clothes? Head on into Ellesmere Drapery for something fashionable, Little Boutique for the wee ones or Flirty Girties for something unique for the ladies. FIRE RESTRICTIONS FOR SELWYN A restricted fire season will be introduced in Selwyn district from 12 noon on Wednesday 5 November. “The fire risk in Selwyn has increased over the past two weeks as weather conditions have become drier so it is now appropriate to introduce a restricted fire season to reduce the fire danger,” says Deputy Principal Rural Fire Officer Douglas Marshall. Under a restricted fire season, only gas barbeques, crop residue and rubbish fires inside contained drums are allowed in rural areas of Selwyn. There are a number of conditions which must be met before fires can be lit (see ‘What’s allowed in a restricted fire season’ below). Any other fires can only be lit if a permit has been obtained from Selwyn District Council. “Although paddocks in the district look green, the soil and vegetation close to the soil is much dryer than normally experienced at this time of year. We have also experienced many strong Northwest winds recently which further dry out the soil and vegetation. These winds also cause fires to spread quickly. With fire restrictions in place people must not light bonfires as part of their firework celebrations. We would encourage people to attend public fireworks displays instead,” says Mr Marshall. Mr Marshall says that if people are thinking of lighting a fire, they should always check whether they can do so and what safety guidelines they must meet by visiting the Council website, www.selwyn.govt.nz/ fire. “Over summer people may see crop residue fires burning. Fire services are often called out to attend rural fires that are being supervised and managed appropriately,” he says. “It’s expensive and time consuming for volunteer fire fighters to attend false call outs so we encourage people to consider whether a fire is an emergency before they dial 111. If there are people on site supervising

the fire, a fire break and water on hand it is probably a controlled operation – however if there is no one present people should report this by dialing 111.” What’s allowed in a restricted fire season: In residential areas the only type of fire permitted throughout the year is a gas barbeque. Other fires need a resource consent from Environment Canterbury. In rural areas in Selwyn in a restricted fire season the following rules apply:  Gas barbeques are allowed if a water source is nearby. In residential areas gas barbeques are the only type of outdoor fire allowed unless a resource consent has been granted from Environment Canterbury for the fire  Fires inside properly constructed drums are allowed. Only vegetation, paper, cardboard and untreated wood can be burned and the fire must be during daylight hours and attended at all times. A water source must be nearby to extinguish the fire if needed and the fire may not be lit when strong winds are blowing or forecast  The burning of crop residue is allowed but only during daylight hours and must be attended at all times. Fires may not be lit when strong winds are blowing or forecast, fire-fighting equipment and an adequate water source must be nearby and a 10 metre firebreak must be cleared around the edge of the area to be burnt  Fire may be lit if a specific permit has been issued by Selwyn District Council and the conditions of the permit are followed What’s not allowed:  Any type of fire not listed as permitted above – note that bonfires are not permitted  Fire cannot be lit on Council reserves - including Coes and Chamberlains Fords and Whitecliffs Reserve In the high country and hill areas of Selwyn, a restricted fire season is permanently in place.

RESTORING BIODIVERSITY AROUND ELLESMERE Three local organisations came together at the recent Ellesmere A&P Show to promote native plants, riparian restoration and ‘weedbusting’. Waihora Ellesmere Trust, Te Ara Kākāriki Greenway Canterbury and the Environment Canterbury Biosecurity Team (in support of Weedbusters) set up their displays at the show, with children’s

games, information and giveaways. Visitors were able to find out more about funding options, dealing with problem weeds, managing drains, and getting involved in volunteer planting days around Selwyn District. The three groups held a prize draw and local MP, and current Minister of Justice, the Hon. Amy

Adams drew out the winners. The prize pool included some great books, t-shirts and beanies. Congratulations to the prize winners: Hamish Rennie, Mrs S. Holmes, Dean Chapman, Jack Carruthers, Mikayla Field, Isaiah Fortune, Charlotte Cathcart and Ben Fortune. Photo left: Brian Reid (WET Trustee), Hon. Amy Adams MP, & Brook Turner (TAK Coordinator). Below the WET, TAK & Weedbusters tent at the Ellesmere Show.

FUNDING SUPPORTS COMMUNITY EVENTS $39,000 has been allocated to 18 community events by Selwyn District Council through its Events Fund. A wide range of local events received funding, including the Hororata Highland Games, Rolleston Fireworks Night, Children’s Day, the Lincoln University Dairy Farm Open Day and the Lincoln Multicultural Festival. The fund was established last year to support events held in Selwyn which are open to the public; attract local, regional and international visitors; and benefit and promote the district. “We established the fund as there are an increasing number of

events happening which help make our district a great place to live in and attract people to come and visit Selwyn,” says Mayor Kelvin Coe. “Events are usually organised by community organisations and the Council is pleased to be able to support their work through grants from our Events Fund.” The next events funding round will open in July 2015.

What crazy weather we’ve been having lately. With the unexpected snow at Mt Hutt this week, I was starting to think that a white Christmas in Canterbury may not be such a bizarre thought after-all. Hard to believe it’s only two weeks until Summer. I’m already planning the holidays - unlike Santa. At the North Pole, the Elves are flat out getting the toys ready and checking the lists. Now is the time to get the letters away to make sure Santa knows what you’d like for Christmas, but remember Christmas is also for giving and that is where the Leeston Market comes in. Get the letters written and drop them into the Christmas mailbox at the Leeston Market so they can be sent off to the North Pole. Put pen to paper, write Santa a letter using your favourite stationery, put it in an envelope, stamp it and address it to: Santa Claus Santa's Workshop North Pole 0001 Remember: to include your name and full postal address! Once your letter has been posted off safely in the Leeston Market Christmas mailbox, you can spend some time looking for gifts for the family. Plants make excellent gifts and you can create the most beautiful gift of potted colour by getting your seedlings now and growing them on yourself. Before you leave the market, grab a drink and something yummy to eat for lunch and you’ve had a great Saturday morning. There are two special markets coming up in December

that you need to put in your diaries; on Friday night the 5th December is the Leeston Christmas Parade and the Marketeers join in all the fun of this exciting community event (NOTE: there will be NO market on Saturday the 6th December). Then on the evening of the 20th December, the Leeston Market is joining with some of our wonderful local retailers for a twilight market. From 5pm till 8pm there will be a very special market that will give you a unique opportunity to catch up with friends and get those last minute gifts for family. Keep an eye out in the stores for the posters and join us for our Christmas twilight market, the last one for 2014. There are two more markets left in November, the 15th and the 29th and then three in December, Friday night, the 5th - Santa Parade, and then Saturday the 13th, and of course the Saturday Twilight market on December 20th. So mark the calendar and join us at the Leeston Market and if you make it or grow it please give us a call. Drop us a line by email at leeston.farmersmarket@gmail.com or speak to any of the Marketeers for more information See you at the Leeston Market on the 15th November ~ whatever the weather! FEED BACK NEEDED ON DRAFT GAMBLING POLICY Selwyn District Council is seeking public feedback on its draft Gambling Venue Policy. The draft policy, which has been released for consultation, would replace the Council’s existing Gambling Policy adopted in 2004. Selwyn District Council Research and Policy Advisor Melissa Renganathan says the draft policy provides controls on the number and location of “pokie” machines in the district. “The revised policy proposes a cap of one machine to 450 people. The new policy would prohibit new pokie machines and Racing Board venues from operating in residential areas which our existing policy also does,” says Ms Renganathan. In the existing policy, there is a cap of one machine to every 300 people. This cap was set ten years ago when the district had a population of around 30,000 but latest figures show Selwyn’s populations has increased to around 50,000. There are currently 82 pokie machines operating in Selwyn. An additional seven machines are licensed to operate in Selwyn but are not currently in use. The number of machines to population proposed in Selwyn of 1 to 450 people is very low compared to the national average of one machine for 260 people. “The proposed cap would allow around 111 machines to operate in Selwyn, based on our current population. Pokie machine numbers could increase in the future in proportion with the district’s population growth,” says Ms Renganathan. Council staff will explain the policy and be available to answer questions from the public at the Selwyn Central Community Board meeting at 4.30pm on Wednesday 19 November at Selwyn District Council offices in Rolleston, and at the Malvern Community Board meeting at 4pm on Monday 24 November at the Darfield Library and Service Centre. Consultation on the draft Gambling Venue Policy is open until 5pm on Friday 12 December 2014. The policy and a submission form is available online at www.selwyn.govt.nz/haveyoursay. These documents are also available from Council libraries and services centres. For more information, contact Mel Renganathan, Research and Policy Advisor, on 03 347 2712 or emailMelissa.renganathan@selwyn.govt.nz.

RECORD BREAKING RESPONSIBLE BUSINESSES IN ELLESMERE A record-breaking forty-four organisations from Dunsandel, Leeston and Southbridge took part in the Ellesmere Responsible Business Awards (RBA) this year. Each year the organisations raise the bar by doing more to minimise their impact on the environment and this is demonstrated in the number of organisations receiving platinum awards this year – eight organisations, up from three in 2013. The 2014 joint winners of the Ravensdown Trophy for the Ellesmere Responsible Business Awards are two small businesses who are passionate about sustainability and their community: Poppita’s Café and The Matariki Practice. Bianca Woyak the owner of Poppita’s said she was determined to improve their rating, which was Gold last year. “I thought we did well but I knew there were so many things we could improve on so we decided to focus on sourcing our produce locally and using recyclable and biodegradable packaging”. While the Matariki Practice received a Platinum award last year they managed to improve their rating to become the joint overall winner this year by making use of social media to promote positive health and sustainability messages. Alison Donley, who runs the practice with her husband Stephen Harris says ”By using Facebook for professional reasons I can give my clients the constant reminders they need and also cut down on the need for people to come and see me in person, thus cutting down on transport” The Ellesmere Responsible Business Awards presentations night was held at the Leeston Library on Saturday the 1st November. Guest speaker Hamish Rennie, the outgoing Chair of the Waihora Ellesmere Trust (WET), spoke about the efforts of the WET to improve the state of Lake Ellesmere / Te Waihora and how businesses that choose to be responsible are helping to further this aim.

“It takes more effort to be a responsible business but in doing so you are improving the health of Lake Ellesmere / Te Waihora through practices such as ensuring your waste water is clean”. Hamish also spoke about how organisations such as local schools and businesses help WET with their efforts through sponsorship and helping out at planting days. The awards were presented by the Mayor Kelvin Coe and the supper was sponsored by Synlait. The award scheme is coordinated by the Lincoln Envirotown Trust and sponsored by the Selwyn District Council with the printing costs covered by Lincoln University. It is also held in Lincoln, Prebbleton, Rolleston and Tai Tapu areas, with the possibility of Darfield next year. The aims of the RBA are to encourage businesses to reduce their impact on the environment, to congratulate them on the steps they are taking to do this, and to promote local businesses and services. Businesses are awarded a bronze, silver , gold or platinum award. Businesses that earn a Silver Award or above can list their business on the Lincoln Envirotown website for free advertising. To take part in the awards businesses complete a survey about their efforts to reduce waste, water and energy use and to enhance the environment through planting native trees or supporting local environmental initiatives. Because of the high number of businesses reaching Platinum, and the number of businesses receiving a perfect score a new challenge will be set through the RBAs next year. This may take the form of a Diamond challenge. Criteria for this new category will be revealed soon. Thanks to the work done by our dedicated assessors: Marsha Jordyn-Mullins and Annie Stuart and our RBA coordinator Sarah Pritchett The RBAs will take place again next year. For more information

TENNIS TALK WITH WILTON ATKINS Nathan McKenzie of Killinchy Tennis club continued his good run of form taking out the 10’s boy’s event at the Ashburton Trust Junior Open. Held over Labour weekend, there were 14 entries in the 10`s age group which included the top 10’s boys from all over Canterbury. Top seeded McKenzie met a stern challenge in his semifinal against Hagley Park’s Liam Barrett. Barrett took out the first set 4/0 with his consistent depth of shot and lack of errors, while McKenzie struggled with umpiring foot fault calls. However showing good maturity, McKenzie made the decision to play a more aggressive attacking style, and he turned the tables around and went on to win the match in 3 sets. The final was more straight forward against the number 2 seed Harry Dargue, winning 5-3, 4-1 to claim the title. Ben Smith, also of Killinchy, teamed up with McKenzie to take out the doubles title in convincing fashion. Ellesmere tennis also held their rep trials for the 12, 14 and 16 age groups last Sunday. They will play 3 rep matches against North Canterbury, Malvern and Mid Canterbury. Wilton’s Tip of the week Tennis is not just about hitting great shots: the best players are the best problem solvers. Next time you hit the court, think about how you can change a losing pattern of play, or maintain a desirable pattern of play. Shot selection is crucial. There are times when you need to defend and there are times when you need to attack.

ELLESMERE CYCLING CLUB A moderate NW'er was a mixed blessing for the riders in the Leeston race on 23rd October. The first half of the race was very quick, but up the home straight it was hard with the legs tiring. It did not stop the Scratch mark however who rode strongly and recorded one of the rare sub-20 minute times. Up the home straight the bunches had all started to form up, and it ended up with 41 riders all given the same clock time at the finish. The Scratch bunch just managed to get in amongst that bunch on the line. In the Development race, a first time rider Josh Ocop-Coursey was an unknown quantity, and he made the most of his handicap to ride by himself and stay away by 2 minutes on the chasers. Results Race 4, 23rd October (with net times) :Development Race 1st 10 of 15 starters - 1st Josh Ocup-Coursey (U17) 32:10, 2nd & fastest time Michael Harvey 29:26, 3rd Simon Dunlop st, 4th Nigel Thomas st, 5th Andrew Lambie st, 6th Freddie Gash (U17) 32:26, 7th Mike Morley-Bunker

29:26, 8th Sandy Harper st, 9th Ruth Brennan (U17) 32:26, 10th Geoff Allan 30:25. Senior race - 1st 10 of 58 starters - 1st Brent Marryatt 22:06, 2nd Andy Timmings st, 3rd Jared Pidcock (U17) 22:51, 4th Derek Smith st, 5th Gary Fulham st, 6th Robbie Risdon 23:26, 7th Andrew Jones 22:51, 8th Stuart Ford 22:06, 9th Robert McIntyre 22:51, 10th Kate Smith (U17) 23:36, 33rd & fastest time Lee Johnstone 19:51. For the following week's race, this time that it was a strong NE'er up the home straight making it hard on the run in. The senior field saw one of the strongest Scratch bunches ever, with a number looking for a final hit out before the Tour of Southland. It wa s b o o s te d by Hayden McCormick from the North Island who rides in a European Pro team & is the NZ U23 champ, but there were also a number of other former and current NZ reps & Champs as well. While they made up a

lot of ground, catching and leaving behind a number of riders in the process, they ran out of road to catch the front markers who made the most of their own numbers. Unfortunately the results for the senior race are not yet available. In the Development race the adults had the strength in the wind to catch and pass the younger riders, with Mark Maddren breaking away at the finish to take the win.
