THE BUTTON BOX - 150 YEARS OF LEESTON: Production by Leeston Consolidated School School presented an exciting whole school production recently, based on the play “The Button Box” by John Glendall. The goal of the production was to draw on the distinct history and cultural heritages of the local area, including traditional Māori perspectives and the experiences of new settlers. Classes worked with community representatives as part of their inquiry process and audiences were enchanted with acting, singing, dancing and rapping as the sixteen classes presented eleven recreated events from Leeston’s past, in their own special way. Serving the Ellesmere district for over 50 years

The show bought back many memories for the audience, with Doctor Volkman’s ‘magic medicine’ bringing lots of laughs, and the pipe band scene rousing the audience. Principal Lynda Taylor was extremely proud of the children who performed so professionally. It was no mean feat, and it couldn’t have been done without the wonderfully talented staff and children, and the many parents and community represent-

atives who helped make the show such a success.

NEW ICON FOR LEESTON The Ellesmere Heritage Park Trust has released its design for a new façade to be built on the wall of the main building fronting Leeston Road. This façade shows the vision the Trust is working towards and demonstrates to the Leeston community and wider Selwyn district the size of this project. Designed by Richard McNeill of Architect Studio Christchurch, the façade will be an integral part of fully enclosing of the main building and securing a bird proof interior. Once secured, the starlings will have to move elsewhere and work can begin to build an internal area for the Ellesmere Historical Society and the initial displays. The Trust has been leading up to this vision as it works its way through the various consent processes. Members are keen for people to know and understand

the nature of this heritage project. “We want the community to know this is not a small museum but a facility based in Leeston which will, in time, be a significant destination. People can research their own past, learn about things that no longer exist, or activities that have contributed to where and how we live today: a centre for the history of the Selwyn district.” said Trust Chairman John Winchester. Once approval of the resource consent has been received, work will begin on the alterations to the toilet block and the façade. The Trust’s Annual General Meeting will be held at 7.30 pm on September 4th in the Leeston Community Room. All are welcome to hear Thérèse Angelo – Director, Air Force Museum of New Zealand share her experience of developing museums.

ELLESMERE COMMUNITY VEHICLE TRUST In 2012 after Community consultation, and a trial using a loaned Minibus, the Ellesmere Community Vehicle Trust was established. The purpose is to provide an affordable transport service for our Community especially to those without private cars, the disadvantaged and disabled, and for the public of all ages. This has been done by fundraising and receiving grants and donations from various sources, and

the purchase of a 10 seater Toyota HiAce Minibus. This is being used regularly for outings from the area ‘ to wherever’ as there is no public transport or taxi service in the area. To newcomers in the district – this service is for your use. Get a group together and enjoy the fun of travelling together and being driven for a change. The Trust will supply an approved driver for your outing. Or to join

one of the regular day trips contact details below. To date there has been various uses for the minibus – Garden tours and Fetes, Orana Park, concerts, movies, night trots, dinner parties, children’s events and to places including Ashburton, Geraldine, Rangiora, Methven, Timaru, Kaiapoi, Oxford and Darfield. These are great days out. It may be a children’s birthday group, or just a sightseeing fun day. Think

outside the square and make use of this affordable service. The AGM of the ECVT is to be held on 11th September. Come along and find out more about this service available in our Ellesmere District. All welcome. For bookings or enquiries contact Judith May 324 8227; or Lois Birkett 324 3884

PLAYCENTRE HOUSIE EVENING This year Southbridge Playcentre’s annual housie night will be on Friday September 19th at the Southbridge Town Hall. Doors will be open from 7 pm for a 7.30pm start. Supper will be provided. In 2000, when the committee came up with the idea of having a housie evening as a fundraising event, no one would have thought it would still be going strong 14 years later as one of the main fundraisers for our local Playcentre. But thanks to the generous support from our local businesses and the public we continue to hold this very successful event annually.

Playcentre relies heavily on fundraising and donations to keep the centre running to the highest possible standard on a weekly basis for all our local children and their families. If you are keen for a fun night out and would like to be in the chance to win some great prizes, get some friends together and come down to support the local kids. The supper is always a hit with lots of homemade goodies. Thank you for your continuous support from the families at Southbridge Playcentre.

Have you ever moved to a new community? It can take several years to feel part of that community and find out what is going on. “The New Zealand Newcomers’ Network is a network of groups throughout New Zealand welcoming newcomers.” (www.newcomers.co .nz) The aim of the network is to help new people engage in the local community and meet other people. It is a great way to find out what is happening in the local community and make ties and connections with people, instead of feeling isolated and alone. Leeston has just been added to the list of New Zea-

land communities that have a newcomers’ group. I am going to be coordinating the Leeston Newcomers’ Network and will be helping organize monthly events that welcome new people into the area. I will be holding a coffee chat group starting soon, and also I organize the Leeston Women’s Group which meets every 2nd Tuesday of the month 7pm at Poppita’s Café and Pizzeria. If you would like to join

the Leeston group or help organize events please email: leeston@newcomers.co. nz . It would also be great to have a list of events and activities that are going on in Leeston to share with newcomers. Therefore if you help organize an event/ activity and would like it added to the list please email me, including a contact name and email or phone number as well as the address, time and date of the event.

ENVIRO ELLESMERE 2014 SCULPTURE COMPETITION Fifty contestants and supporters attended the award ceremony for the 2014 outdoor recycled sculpture competition in early May. Overall winning sculptor, for "Church Gate," Peter Lemon, inspired us all with his art and his message "I hate waste." Many of Peter's sculptures make use of hours of demolition to rescue reinforcing steel from inside structural concrete, including power poles. Peter says "A lot of my ideas come about through thinking up ideas to use the materials I have at hand. Most of the articles are made entirely from what I have collected and are usually things I need or can use myself. A lot of my workshop equipment I have also made myself." Peter Lemon also took away the best senior entry prize, as well, for "Hoop Iron and Harrows". Peter provided this description for his sculpture, "Church Gate was made predominantly from recycled reinforcing steel from power poles. The 8m steel lengths were recovered by bashing the concrete to pieces with a sledgehammer.

Various sizes and shapes can be found within these poles including the beautiful twisted square steel used in the cross. I was initially asked to make a simple wooden gate with trellis (same as the fence). We then discovered that children could climb over the gate. My suggestion was a steel design with vertical bars and perhaps a rounded top. A gesture was made to the church door and windows which I think was responsible for the eventual design. The arch and hinge design came later". The goal of the initiative was to get innovative and creative ideas out in the open. Our area is rich with super-creative and clever people and an abundance of resources. Enviro Ellesmere wanted to see what people would come up with if encouraged. Enviro Ellesmere were very grateful to receive support from a Creative Communities Arts grant. Many local businesses also donated prizes and support including RD1, Hornby Warehouse, Prebbleton Vege Fresh, Farmland Co-op Leeston, Curly's Last Post, John Summers, Leeston Hire Centre, Hammer Hardware, Baylis Bros Service Station and Subway Rolleston m a n y thanks to these generous supporters. Thanks also to the Leeston Library for their assistance.

INTRODUCTION OF FISHING LICENCES FOR ‘NON-RESIDENTS’ Fish & Game New Zealand is launching new licences for overseas anglers who visit the country to fish for longer than a day or so. The non-resident season licence (NRL) will cost $160 – a third more than Kiwis pay. The new licence is aimed in particular at the dedicated overseas angler who comes to New Zealand to fish for trout intensively for days, if not weeks. Non-resident licences will be on sale for the new fishing season which begins October 1,2014, and must be purchased by any visitor from another country who wants to fish for trout for an extended period. 24hour licences will still be available to them, but they’ll no longer be eligible for NZ adult whole season, family or winter licences. If a non-resident is caught angling using anything other than an NRL or a 24-hour licence, they will be treated in the same way as an un-licenced angler. Prosecution could follow. Fish & Game CEO Bryce Johnson says the nonresident licence has been introduced to ensure that such anglers pay their “fair share” towards the management of our fisheries. “Non-residents have been getting a bargain - the benefit of a fishery they haven’t really paid for – compared with the Kiwi angler who has contributed to the ongoing management of fisheries both through fishing licence fees and taxes. “Resident anglers who’ve bought licences over a number of years feel they’ve made a substantial and consistent contribution to the management of the fishery.

“They also make contributions over time through taxes and council rates to environmental research, freshwater ecosystem management, monitoring and public access.” Mr Johnson says that up until now overseas anglers, who put pressure on New Zealand’s fragile back country fisheries, have had access to our world-class fisheries without really contributing to fishery management, or habitat protection such as Water Conservation Orders. “So it’s not surprising that New Zealand anglers are really supportive of the increased fee for nonresident anglers.” The additional revenue gained from the nonresident licence is ringfenced to be used on back country fisheries – which are favoured by nonresident anglers. Mr Johnson says the management of world-class back country fisheries is expensive, and issues such as crowding on some of these waters needs to be managed carefully to maintain the experience and the country’s reputation as an angling destination. “All we’re doing now is bringing New Zealand in line with countries like the U.S. We are not penalising this group – we’re certain they’ll still find our trout fishing and outdoor experience excellent value for money.” Mr Johnson notes that the new licences won’t impact on the tourist who plans a casual day’s fishing – as noted they will still be able to buy a 24-hour licence at no extra cost.

ELLESMERE REMEMBERS OUR WORLD WAR ONE SOLDIERS A large number of men from the Ellesmere district left New Zealand to fight in the First World War. There are seventy five names on the war memorial in Anderson Square, Leeston, of those that were killed, died of injuries or disease. It created a large gap in the local community and many of those that did return were affected by their experiences for the remainder of their lives. A few local women served as nurses and doctors. The women at home played an important part through their parcels, letter writing and fundraising. The Ellesmere Historical Society’s evening on Monday 1 September will feature four soldiers from the Taumutu-Sedgemere-Lakeside area. The venue is the Leeston Community Room in Messines Street, starting at 7-30 pm. All interested in World War 1 are welcome to attend. Tania Simpson will speak about Wiremu (Bill) Maopo. Tania has recently written a book, “The Last Maopo”, about him based around letters he wrote from the battlefields to the Sedgemere postmistress Virgie Fincham. The book was launched at Te Taumutu Marae on Anzac Day. The history of Henry Pohio has been written by his granddaughter, Carol Hook of Wairoa, and will be presented during the evening. Pohio fought at Gallipoli and after being commissioned as an officer returned to New Zealand twice, to train recruits and accompanied them to the Western Front. Carol is the daughter of Maurice and Phyllis Pohio. Hohepa (Joseph) Teihoka sailed with the 1st Maori Contingent on 14 February 1915 and served at Gallipoli. After being evacuated from the Peninsula he returned to New Zealand because of TB. Fiona Sloan his great granddaughter will tell Joe’s story

which is based on his diaries. Colin Patterson will speak about John R. Patterson who was wounded at Gallipoli. He was evacuated to Egypt and returned to the front when he had recovered. Jock was again evacuated

and died from disease on the troopship “Willochra” on 30 September 1915. The evening will show some of the New Zealand Memorials and cemeteries at the Somme in France and at Gallipoli.

How quickly things change in a matter of months and weeks. A couple of months ago we had new lambs on the farm, and now they are half as big as their mums. Down the road, lambing at a neighbouring farm has just begun. The newborns are soooooooo tiny. Calves are big enough now that the first have left the sheds and are out in the paddocks, and the best of all, Spring is officially only days away. Can’t wait to plant out and to see what our green fingered stall holders will bring along to tempt the gardening bug in us all. The next exciting ‘Community’ event is our birthday market on the 4th October when the Leeston Market will be seven years old. Put October 4th in your calendars to join the Leeston ‘Birthday Box’ Market. This will be an opportunity for the kids, or anyone, to come along with their ‘Box’ to sell out of …… anything There will also be a

competition for the best ‘Birthday present Box’ but you need to register your interest as space will be of a premium. Email us atleeston.farmersmarket@g mail.com to save your spot. Get the kids decorating their boxes now as it’s only a month away. Clean out the toy cupboard, the linen cupboard, the kitchen cupboard, the garage; one man’s recycling is another’s treasure so reuse and recycle and enjoy a day at the Leeston Market in the process. The sidewalk presentation of the stalls is proving very popular so we’ll keep the set up this way during the Spring months. We’ve had lots of positive feedback from the community which always goes down a treat. Keep in mind that we can cater for you if you need power but these sites are very limited so you will need to apply. It’s been great to get interest from new stall holders and it’s awesome to have variety at

1 Southbridge Tennis Club’s season will be into the swing of things again during Open Day on Saturday 13th September. Interested tennis players are welcome to dust off the racquet and come along for a friendly hit, and to see some of the Club’s top guns in action, including new life member Simon McCormick. At the AGM held last week, McCormick was recognised for his long-standing dedication to the Southbridge Club, which includes his annual dare-devil antics to get the large hedge trimmed. Registration for mid-week and Saturday tennis occurs on Open Day. Club games, rained off at the end of last season, will also be played. Club trophies to be competed for include the Christey Cup Men’s singles, Alan Tray Women’s singles, Inwood Cup and Women’s singles. Some entertaining tennis will be played, so locals are invited to come and cheer on the players. Junior registration will occur in the week preceding Open Day. Southbridge Tennis Club offers coaching, mini-tennis, and Saturday competition - for beginners, primary, and secondary students. Repairs to the tennis courts are a focus this season. This makes the annual fundraiser, the phone book delivery, particularly important. The Club hopes that senior and junior players, and their families, will volunteer to help with this event. LIVE TO RIDE TRAINING COMING SOON Selwyn motorcyclists are being offered the opportunity to develop their skills so they can be safer on the road. Selwyn District Council is offering a subsidised ‘Live to Ride’ motorcycle skills coaching programme which aims to help reduce the number of motorcycle crashes in the district. The next sessions are being held on the weekends of 27-28 September and 18-19 Octo-

ber at Lincoln. Riding a motorcycle is much more dangerous than driving a car. In New Zealand, the risk of being involved in a fatal or injury crash is 20 times higher for a motorcyclist than for a car driver. From 2009 - 2013, there were 57 motorcycle crashes in Selwyn District resulting in three fatalities, 34 serious injuries, 31 minor injuries. There were also eight non-injury crashes. Selwyn District Road Safety Coordinator, Ngaire Tinning, says the number of motorcycle crashes is concerning and the Council started offering the ‘Live to Ride’ training late last year to try to reduce the number and severity of crashes in Selwyn. Live to Ride provides subsidised motorcycle skills coaching where people can refresh their skills, and learn and practice new techniques. The courses are delivered by New Zealand Transport Agency qualified trainers and include training to

develop braking, handling and safe driving skills. Since the Live to Ride programme started 30 motorcyclists have taken part in the coaching sessions. Course evaluations by participants show the training is highly rated and has helped them improve their skills in a range of areas like turning on corners, coping with bad weather and hazards, braking and steering. Mrs Tinning says the course offers motorcyclists the opportunity to learn how to assess risks and avoid problems that may cause crashes while driving. “The course provides a hands-on experience where people can learn in a team environment. REVIEW FINDS FLUORIDATION SAFE AND EFFECTIVE A review of the scientific evidence for and against the efficacy and safety of fluoridation of public water supplies has found that the levels of fluoridation used in New Zealand create no health risks and provide protection against tooth decay. Councils currently implementing this measure can be confident about its public health benefits, while those not currently fluoridating water can consider it a safe and effective option. The review, entitled Health Effects of Water Fluoridation: a Review of the Scientific Evidence, was commissioned by Sir Peter Gluckman, the New Zealand Prime Minister’s Chief Science Advisor, and Sir David Skegg, President of the Royal Society of New Zealand, at the request of Auckland City on behalf of several local Councils. “The process for the review was rigorous,”

said Sir David Skegg. “It included an extensive evaluation of the scientific literature by a panel of five experts, as well as one lay observer with local body experience. The resulting report was reviewed by three international experts and by the Director of the National Poisons Centre,” he said. According to Skegg, the panel paid particularly close attention to the claims that fluoride contributes to the risks of cancer, musculoskeletal and hormonal disorders, as well as to claims that it has adverse effects on brain development – these being the major contentions about potential harms that have been made. “The panel concluded that the concerns raised by those opposed to fluoridation are not supported by the scientific evidence,” said Skegg. According to the report, the only side effect of fluoridation at the levels used in New Zealand is mild dental fluorosis, which can cause opaque white areas in the tooth enamel that is usually of no cosmetic significance. This is found to be as common in nonfluoridated areas as it is in fluoridated areas, which is probably a reflection

of behaviour such as swallowing of fluoridated toothpaste by young children. “The review finds compelling evidence that fluoridation of the water at the established and recommended levels produces broad and continuing benefits for the dental health of New Zealanders,” said Sir Peter Gluckman. “The public can be reassured on the basis of robust scientific data, that the implementation of this public health measure poses no risk of adverse health effects,” he said. “It is worth noting that dental health remains a major issue for much of the New Zealand population, particularly in communities of low socioeconomic status.” From a scientific perspective, the report finds that community water fluoridation provides a cost-effective and equitable way of improving public health. However, it should be noted that the review does not address the broader philosophical issues that have surrounded fluoridation.

RELATIONSHIP PROPERTY & CONTRACTING OUT AGREEMENTS The Property Relationships) Act 1976 is a statutory scheme designed to determine the interests in property of people who are, or have been, in relationships where the property was, or is to be, used collectively. It is largely used by couples following separation to achieve a just division as to each spouse or partner’s interest and entitlement, though the scheme can also be used by existing couples for financial planning purposes. The scheme was extended by amendment in 2001, so now deals with de facto couples and same sex couples as well as married couples. Some relationships of short duration or poor quality are not covered by the scheme, as the scheme takes a practical and principled approach to relationship property and family finance interests. Generally speaking, the presumption of the scheme is that most property put to the common use or benefit of the relationship by the couple during the relationship is relationship property and is owned in equal shares by each spouse or partner. However, there is some-

thing of a deferred approach in so far as each spouse or partner is able to deal with the property on their own account during the relationship and it is only when the relationship fails that the equal share interest expressly comes into effect. The notion of equal sharing comes about from a legal recognition that people make different kinds of contributions to sustain and foster a relationship and it would be unfair that, should that relationship fail, the quality of the relationship was not taken into account in the round and everything was assessed from a purely financial paradigm. Some kinds of property are excluded from the scheme as separate property – for example inheritances or benefits from a trust – as they were intended from the outset to be for the benefit of only one person. Separate property can still come within the scheme of equal sharing if it is put to the common use or benefit of the relationship, so it is imperative that any property a person wishes to retain as their separate property is earmarked as such from the outset and is kept from having an influ-

ence on the domestic economy of the relationship. While the law’s efforts to recognise individual property rights following the highly personal circumstances of a separation is soundly principled it is often in the practical aspects of giving effect to the scheme that the spouses or partners will need legal assistance. If, as is most commonly the case, there was one family home during the relationship, issues will arise as to whether that home should be sold and the equity divided or whether it is better that one person remain in occupation. Other issues can arise in respect of circumstances where there are multiple homes or a homestead on a lifestyle block or small farm. If there are children to the failed relationship issues will inevitably arise regarding child support along with broader matters concerning the care and welfare of the children. A measure of goodwill will be required by each spouse or partner to resolve property issues following a separation and there will need to be some give and take to make things work in practical terms. It is important that each spouse or partner consult a legal advisor during this process so each is aware of their rights and entitlements in respect of the relationship property. Your legal advisor may be able to assist in negotiating and preparing a contractual agreement about division of the relationship property which prevents the matter from going through a costly and protracted process in the courts. Contractual agreements can also be made during or

at the beginning of a relationship where either spouse or partner has concerns that some of their property, which they wish to keep separate, for whatever reason, may become vested in the relationship. It can prevent a lot of hassle and expense later on down the line, should your relationship fail, if you consult a legal advisor about contracting out of the statutory scheme. Whether you have property from a family inheritance or have received gifts that you are concerned will become intermingled in the relationship, or you and your partner have made significantly disparate contributions in establishing your home environment, or you and your partner simply want clarity from the outset as to what contributions you can expect to make to the relationship and what you would like your entitlements to be, your lawyer can assist you in tailoring an agreement to suit your circumstances. The law recognises the validity of such agreements provided you have had your statutory entitlements explained to you and you have subsequently elected to vary them to suit your situation. Such agreements can be part of a broader approach to asset planning.

NATIONAL CHAMPION SETS SIGHTS ON WORLD CHALLENGE When Steven Maw returns to compete in the World Firefighter Combat Challenge at Phoenix, Arizona in November, two things will be different. Firstly he will be representing his Country as National Champion, after his sensational win at Wellington in March, and, secondly, he will have his father, Wayne, as a teammate. They will be part of a 5 man New Zealand Team gearing up to take on the World's best. Steven will first take part in the US Nationals at Tyler, Texas from 23rd-25th October before joining the rest of the Team for the World Challenge from the 3rd-9th November. The 2 Finals Days will be held in conjunction with the NASCAR Sprint Cup series at Phoenix International Raceway. Steven and Wayne have started fundraising for the trip and also hope to attract some sponsorship through local business. They are

encouraged by the response so far, with the knowledge they have the support of the Community behind them. Last year Steven was one of the very few Volunteer Firefighters who competed in the World Challenge, the large majority being career/ paid firefighters "We are very proud to represent the Southbridge Brigade and our Country at the World Challenge. Steven’s had a taste and can't wait to go back and I just can't wait" said Wayne. "The biggest "challenge'' for Steven at the moment is maintaining his training around his work, while our goal is to go faster than we ever have before.” We set the bar fairly high this year. The Nationals produced top results but you’re only as good as your next run, hopefully all the preparation will see us achieve our gaols! You can follow their progress through "Steven Maw's Fundraising Page" on Facebook.

2014 WORLD FIREFIGHTER COMBAT CHALLENGE And US Nationals The firefighter Combat Challenge is back for 2014. This year the Southbridge Fire Brigade will be represented by Steven and Wayne Maw. Steven will be heading over as the New Zealand National Champion. He will be competing at the US Nationals from the 23-25 October in Tyler, Texas. Then he will be joining his father Wayne to compete at the World Championship from 3-9 November in Phoenix, Arizona.
