A Message from the Dean Welcome! The University of Toronto and Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education welcome you to a special celebration to recognize the donors and volunteers who have made the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport possible. This architectural jewel, designed by Patkau and Associates and MJM Architects, and built by EllisDon, opened in 2014 and immediately started receiving awards and accolades for its unique design, innovative engineering, multiple usage and seamless fit within the community. These awards are a tremendous honour for U of T, our Faculty, the architectural firms and builders, and you - the benefactors of the building. Thanks to you: • U of T students of all interests and abilities can now work out and train side by side in a state-of-the-art fitness, strength and conditioning centre. • The spectacular 2,000 seat Kimel Family Field House is now host not only to Varsity Blues games and practices, but to some of the most exciting events happening in our city, from the Bell NBA All Star Challenge to Midnight Madness Basketball, born out of a partnership with Toronto Community Housing to help keep vulnerable youth off the streets. • New sport courts were added on the St. George campus for the first time since 1979, an interval which saw the student population more than double. • Sport medicine specialists, exercise scientists, graduate students, coaches and trainers have labs and offices in which to share ideas, test theories and translate breakthroughs that will further advance the health care, sports science support, training and coaching of our students and athletes. And all this under one roof! At the opening ceremony for the building two years ago, I said the future users of this complex will owe you big time and that I hoped you would take great pride in their feeling that way. Well, the future is here and you deserve to feel proud! As we conclude our $58 million capital fundraising campaign, I am excited to have you join us for an evening of celebration and recognition with some of Canada’s most decorated Olympic and Paralympic athletes and staff, who are also U of T students and alumni. A Message from the Campaign Chair Dear supporters and friends of the Goldring Centre, The Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport is like no other facility in the province of Ontario with its state-of-the-art research, training, competition and treatment facilities for athletes, students, sport scientists and the community. The generosity and commitment of many individuals, families and corporations combined with a transformative $22.5 million contribution by the Province of Ontario has enabled us to raise almost all of the $58 million required for the capital funding and I am confident that together, we can reach this goal tonight. On behalf of the Campaign Advisory Committee, I am grateful for the commitment to this project that has come from so many donors, staff and more than 100 volunteers. I would especially like to mention my fellow advisors with whom I had the pleasure of working as the Campaign Chair: Mike Dyon, Victor Harding, John MacLennan, Michael Nobrega, Karen Pitre, Kevin Reed, Alex Squires, Cailey Stollery, Lindsay Stollery, David Watt and Neil Wright. I am very proud of our committee and the incredible effort they have made since the campaign began in 2006. Congratulations to each of you and I hope you feel pride in the role you have played in creating this magnificent facility - one that is being enjoyed now and will be decades to come. Remarks: 7:15pm – 7:45pm Speakers: Ira Jacobs, Dean of the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education at the University of Toronto, is an expert on adaptations of human physiological systems to exercise and environmental stressors. Eleanor McMahon serves as Ontario’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport and the member of the Legislative Assembly for the riding of Burlington. The Province of Ontario made a transformational $22.5 million contribution to the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport and therefore played a central role in bringing this facility to our communities. David Palmer, U of T’s Vice-President of Advancement is leading the University through its groundbreaking $2 billion BOUNDLESS Campaign, which is the largest fundraising and alumni engagement campaign in Canadian university history. Patrick O’Hanlon, co-founder of Kylemore Communities/Angus Glen Development, is the Chair of the Goldring Centre Campaign Advisory Board. Rosie MacLennan, U of T alumna and graduate student in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education (KPE), is Canada’s double-gold medalist in trampoline. MacLennan was Canada’s flag bearer at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Ira Jacobs will deliver closing remarks The event concludes at 9:00pm. 3
Accolades for the Goldring Centre Not only an outstanding facility for physical activity and research, the Goldring Centre also stands out as an architectural gem having received the following awards to date: • 2015 Toronto Urban Design Award by the City of Toronto. The jury named Goldring the winner of an Award of Excellence in the Public Building in Context category • 2015 Design Excellence Award from the Ontario Association of Architects, recognizing the innovative skills of Ontario architects in creating spaces, buildings and communities that respect and enhance the environment and enrich human activity • 2015 Canadian Consulting Engineering Award of Excellence, in recognition of the unusual and complex top-down build in which the lower floors were suspended from a large truss • 2015 Facility of Merit Award from Athletic Business magazine which wrote that “The Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport forms a new and vital hub for sports, research and therapy, serving both varsity athletes and the wider campus community” • A Citation by the American School and University Architecture Portfolio 2015, for an ingenious solution to a difficult urban context • 2016 feature in Architect Magazine, one of the premiere international publications by architects which called the building a “visual showcase [that] theatrically fulfills the objective of promoting health and wellness on campus.” • 2016 feature in Canadian Architect Magazine to celebrate the building as an exemplary model for design excellence on campus
