Q: Gibbs and the “NCIS” team recently went to New Orleans on a case. Is there any chance a spinoff, “NCIS” in New Orleans, may be coming? I really liked that episode and think Scott Bakula and his team would be a great show. A: It would seem that the executives at CBS agree with you. They liked the New Orleans episodes enough to order a full series of them, which was the plan all along. The two-episode arc of “NCIS” which took place in New Orleans was, in fact, intended as a so-called “back-door pilot” for a full series. Back-door pilots are episodes of TV shows made specifically as launch pads for new shows, intended to give network execs a sense of what the new series would be like. The show’s previous successful spinoff, “NCIS: Los Angeles,” started the same way: Chris O’Donnell’s character, G. Callen, appeared in a two-episode arc of the original series in the spring before the new show was launched. In this case, the star of “NCIS: New Orleans” would be former “Quantum Leap” star Scott Bakula. He appeared in the original series earlier in the spring as Dwayne Pride, the head of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service’s New Orleans office. These things generally happen in early spring because late spring is when the networks review all of the pilots of proposed series and decide which ones they want to put on the air. Of course, the decision wasn’t particularly tough in this case. The other two “NCIS” shows have been huge hits for CBS, and the network’s other procedural-style franchise, “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” has made hits out of reproducing the same show in different cities. “NCIS: New Orleans” will also star CCH Pounder (who previously starred in “The Shield” and the last season of “Sons of Anarchy”), film star Lucas Black (who starred in 2006’s “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift” and will star in the upcoming sequel, tentatively titled “Fast & Furious 7”) and Zoe McLellan (who is an interesting addition, since she played a different role in “JAG,” the show that spun off the original “NCIS” series).
