Library displays Ashby paintings

Nine booked into Noble County Jail

KENDALLVILLE — A collection of paintings by Paul Ashby is on display at the Kendallville Public Library Art Gallery. Ashby, who lived in Kendallville from 1944-1989, was an artist whose watercolors and block prints were shown through the United States and won more than 80 prizes during his lifetime. Before his death in 1993, Ashby donated a portion of his work to Kendallville Public Library. The display will run through October.

ALBION — Nine people were booked into the Noble County Jail Tuesday and Wednesday, the county sheriff’s department said. • Tyler Hughes Ashbrook, 20, of Angola was booked on a warrant for three counts of alleged theft-receiving stolen property. • Amber Marie Barr, 24, of Columbia city was booked on a warrant for five counts of alleged check deception. • Aldon Keith Cleveland II, 48, of Kendallville was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a blood-alcohol content equal to or greater than 0.15 percent. • Kristan Marie DeCamp, 24, of Brimfield was booked on a warrant for alleged possession of a controlled substance. • Mark Edward Hammel, 48, of Kendallville was charged with possession of a legend drug or precursor. • Nathan James Lyons, 40, of Huntington was booked on a warrant for alleged trafficking with an inmate and possession of marijuana, hash oil or hashish. • Michael McDavid, 18, of Kendallville was booked on a DeKalb County warrant and held for its authorities. • Nicholas Alan Watson, 34, of Ligonier was booked on a possession of methamphetamine warrant. • Serena Marie Wheeler, 22, of Bendallville was booked on a battery warrant.

Vaccinations for school offered today, Monday ALBION — The Noble County Health Department will offer clinics for school vaccinations today from noon to 3 p.m. and Monday from 8:15-11 a.m. Walk-ins will be accommodated on a first come, first served basis. The clinics are in addition to regularly scheduled clinics that take place every Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Wednesday clinics are by appointment only. If a student has private insurance, parents should call the clinic to ensure the health department accepts that insurance. To schedule an appointment, call the clinic at 636-2978.

KENDALLVILLE — Two downtown businesses will receive financial help to enhance their building exteriors. Wednesday morning the Redevelopment Commission approved a $15,000 facade program matching grant for Kendallville Auto Parts, 101 S. Main St. The owner plans to paint the front of the building, repair the overhang and upgrade the roof for a total cost of $33,552. The RDC can match 50 percent of the project costs up to $15,000.

The grant application said King Decorating and Roberts Construction are the project’s contractors. Commissioners also approved a matching grant of $4,470 for Compliance Advantage, 116 S. Main St. to resurface the building’s roof. The total cost of the project is $8,948. Five-Star Roofing is the contractor. In other business, commissioners: • approved contributing $505 to the cost of materials for three sets of benches and bike posts for East Dowling Street. Activate Noble County donated the

items, and Kendallville Park and Recreation Department employees are installing them. • heard a report from Mike Bodenhafer of Bontrager Security Solutions about the WiFi system he installed in the downtown business district. Since Nov. 30, 2012 a total of 442 new users have logged online using the system for a monthly average of 44. The RDC paid for the system to encourage more visitors to come to the downtown area for WiFi access.

KENDALLVILLE — API Construction Inc. has been awarded a contract for $207,822 to reconstruct Granada Drive from south of Pueblo Drive to Cortez Drive in

the Arvada Hills residential community. Tuesday morning, the Board of Public Works voted to accept city engineering department administrator Scott Derby’s recommendation that API be awarded

the contract. API had the lowest of five bids. Other bids received were: Brooks Construction, $226,077; Wayne Asphalt, $245,207; Niblock Excavating, $246,916; and E & B Paving, $322,462. The city has approximately $275,000 for its 2013 street improvements program, said Derby. The work is expected to be completed this fall. Derby and the contractor will meet with affected Granada Drive residents before the project starts. In other business, the board: • approved the use of Bixler Lake Park for the Kendallville Park and Recreation Department Kids Triathlon on Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to noon. • approved the East Noble Football Boosters’ request to fire a cannon for touchdowns during East Noble home football games. • approved Light the Night cancer walk organizers’ request to temporarily close city streets for the walk on Sept. 24 from 7-9 p.m. • approved wage adjustments for new police officers Steven Hus, Joel Otis and Nathaniel Stahl after their completion of a probationary period with the police department and certification through the Law Enforcement Training Board. • renewed a software agreement with Keystone Software Systems for $7,925, a $1,665 increase over the 2012 bill.

18 booked into LaGrange jail LAGRANGE — Local police arrested 18 people from Friday through Tuesday, according to LaGrange County Jail records. • Saria Sanders, 31, of the 1200 block of South Bend Avenue, South Bend, was arrested Tuesday by LaGrange County police on a warrant charging her with failure to appear for court on an original charge of driving while suspended. • Kara Fergison, 34, of the 500 block of Berry Street, Middlebury, was arrested Tuesday on a warrant charging her with assisting a criminal, possession of methamphetamine, possession of of paraphernalia and visiting a common nuisance. • David Miller, 39, of the 15000 block of South State Avenue, Middlefield, Ohio, was arrested Monday by LaGrange County police on a body attachment. No further information was provided.
