SPORTS BRIEFS • Player who scored first basket in NBA history dies at age 94 BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Oscar “Ossie” Schectman, the former New York Knicks guard who scored the first basket in NBA history, died Tuesday. He was 94. Schectman’s son Peter confirmed his father’s death, which was also announced by the Knicks. Peter says his dad died of complications from respiratory failure. Schectman scored the opening basket of a game in what was then known as the BAA on Nov. 1, 1946 for the Knicks against the Toronto Huskies. Commissioner David Stern said Tuesday in a statement that Schectman was a “pioneer.” The commissioner says, “Playing for the New York Knickerbockers in the 1946-47 season, Ossie scored the league’s first basket, which placed him permanently in the annals of NBA history. On behalf of the entire NBA family, our condolences go out to Ossie’s family.”

French Lick named host for 2015 Senior PGA Championship FRENCH LICK (AP) — French Lick Resort in southern Indiana will host the 2015 Senior PGA Championship on its Pete Dye Course. The PGA announced the decision Tuesday. The par-72, 7,400-yard course opened in 2009 and was designed by Dye, the legendary Indiana golf architect. The tournament will be held May 21-24, 2015, with an expected field of 156 players. This will be the fourth major at the resort. The 1924 PGA Championship was played on the Donald Ross Course and won by Walter Hagen. French Lick also held the 1959 and 1960 LPGA Championships.

Cards deal southpaw to Tribe CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians have acquired left-handed reliever Marc Rzepczynski from the St. Louis Cardinals. The Indians sent minor league infielder Juan Herrera to St. Louis on Tuesday in exchange for Rzepczynski, who Cleveland hopes will help them get out left-handed hitters. The 27-year-old is 9-17 with a 4.20 ERA in 177 career games for Toronto and St. Louis. Lefties have batted .224 against Rzepczynski, who pitched 2 2-3 scoreless innings for the Cardinals in the 2011 World Series. Rzepczynski has split this season between St. Louis and Triple-A Memphis. In two stints with the Cardinals, he posted a 7.84 ERA in 11 games. He has limited lefties to a .185 average in the minors. Cleveland’s only other left-handed reliever is Rich Hill. Herrera batted .275 in 39 games for Class A Mahoning Valley.

Sharks lock up Pavelski with five-year extension SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — The San Jose Sharks signed center Joe Pavelski to a $30 million, five-year contract extension Tuesday that will keep him off the free-agent market next summer. “It’s always exciting when a franchise puts that responsibility on you a little bit,” Pavelski said. “It’s important to continue to play at a high level in that regard. It’s a position I wanted to be in, and it’s exciting to have this opportunity.” Pavelski is the second key player signed to an extension this offseason by general manager Doug Wilson. Center Logan Couture also signed a $30 million, five-year extension earlier this month, a year before he could become a free agent. The deals keep both players under contract through the 2018-19 season. Pavelski, a seventh-round pick in 2003, has become a cornerstone of the franchise that has long been led by Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau. “He is one of our core players, the way he plays,” general manager Doug Wilson. “To me it was just an important contract to get done on the heels of Logan’s contract also. He fits for now and the future the way he plays the game.” He was tied for third on the team in points last season when he had 16 goals and 15 assists in 48 games.

Pistons acquire point guard Jennings in deal with Bucks DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Pistons have made another move in their busy offseason, acquiring Brandon Jennings as they desperately try to end their four-year postseason drought. Detroit landed the point guard from the Milwaukee Bucks for point guard Brandon Knight and two prospects, according to a person familiar with the deal. The person, who spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the trade hasn’t been announced, said Jennings has agreed to a $24 million, three-year contract with the Pistons. The person said Detroit will also give up seldom-used Ukrainian center Viacheslav Kravtsov and forward Khris Middleton in the deal. Detroit has been active this offseason, signing free agents Josh Smith, Chauncey Billups and Luigi Datome along with bringing back Will Bynum.
