Handshoe honored Kendallville Mayor Suzanne Handshoe, left, is presented the Distinguished Republican honor by Republican Shelley Mawhorter at the Noble County Republican Central Committee Lincoln Day Dinner Saturday at Cobblestone Golf Course in Kendallville. Handshoe was selected for her hard work for the city, which reflects well on the town and the party, Mawhorter said.
Smoldering insulation causes evacuation at Albion Elementary BY BOB BRALEY bobb@kpcnews.net
ALBION — Smoldering insulation prompted the evacuation of Albion Elementary School for a time Friday, the Central Noble schools superintendent said. Insulation in the former cafeteria at the school, which is being partially demolished for a new cafeteria, apparently started smoldering Thursday, Central Noble
Superintendent Chris Daughtry said. Smoke from the insulation was noticed Friday, prompting the school to evacuate the students into the cafeteria at Central Noble High School, Daughtry said. The fire was put out by the Albion Fire Department within five to 10 minutes, and the students were returned to Albion Elementary a short time later, Daughtry said.

I’ve joined the war against garlic mustard. Introduced from Europe, this spring-blossoming wildflower, in bloom now, grows beneath the trees of many deciduous woods of the eastern United States and southeastern Canada. Like large-flowered trillium, it grows in patches. Other wildflowers grow with it, but where it is common it dominates the woodland floor, and the other flowers are frequently sparse. Each plant of garlic mustard grows with a single stem, rather large, PHOTO CONTRIBUTED somewhat Each plant of garlic mustard can grow 1 to 3 feet tall, triangularand its leaves are large enough to shade plants that shaped succeed in growing beneath it. leaves with roughwas introduced deliberately eat its berries. toothed or whether its seeds were edges and a Darn dandelions brought by accident, perhaps cluster of When I was a boy, I small, white, OUTDOOR with seeds of another plant. helped one grandfather dig don’t know how it is four-petaled NOTES Ispread, though I assume it is dandelions out of our yard. blossoms at As a teenager living in Iowa, spread by its seeds, perhaps the top. FORT WAYNE (AP) — The Fort Wayne-South Bend Catholic Diocese is reevaluating plans to buy a closed elementary school after a charter school group charged the deal violates state law. The diocese had planned to buy Monroeville Elementary School, which East Allen County Schools closed last year, and use it to house students from a Monroeville school that’s in need of repair. St. Rose of Lima Church, which manages St. Joseph Elementary, the school in disrepair, helped raise $189,000 to purchase the building, and the East Allen school board approved the purchase in mid-April. The deal hasn’t closed, though, because the Indiana Public Charter Schools Association
Garden Center • Bulk Stone & Mulch We Install Landscaping
sent the district and the diocese a cease-and-desist letter. Russ Simnick, president of the association, said the sale violates a 2011 law that requires school districts to place unused buildings on an Indiana Department of Education list, where they must stay for 48 months unless the district plans to reclaim the schools for academic purposes. During that time, approved charter schools can buy or lease the school for $1. The district can sell the building to another entity once the four-year span elapses. Simnick said his group wants the district and the diocese to abide by state statute so that current or
future charter schools have a chance to use the building. Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma, who authored the legislation, said the intent was to address situations in which districts were purposely refusing to sell buildings to charter schools to avoid competition. In Monroeville, no charter school has expressed interest in the rural Allen County town of 1,235. Town Council President Don Gerardot said he reached out to local and national charter groups after East Allen closed the school in hopes of finding one interested in relocating to the school but found no takers. “That’s got to be the dumbest law I’ve ever heard of, he said.

Parishioner Lori Wagner said residents are disappointed the deal might fall through. “The school has been empty for a year and nobody has put forth any interest. We’re pretty upset they are trying to do this on a technicality and not on a practicality, she said. Bosma said he wasn’t aware of all the details in the East Allen County Schools case but focused on the spirit of the law. “It would seem under these circumstances that people should be able to get together and come to a reasonable conclusion that serves children, he said.

I’m one of many volunteers destroying garlic mustard. But we’re in a war we’ll never win. Think of the fights people have fought against other plants, fights in which they used, and still use chemical sprays and introduced insects and fungi that feed on plants we want to eliminate. Plants have been reduced, sometimes greatly, but has a pest species ever been eradicated? I don’t even expect to eliminate garlic mustard from the nature preserve where I fight it. Somehow it will come back, perhaps from seeds, perhaps from roots of plants I break off at the surface of the ground. I’ve gone to war in a war I cannot win.

planted in our garden. Now dandelions are numerous in our yard, and they are untouched except when the grass is mowed. Queen Anne’s lace, thistles, sow-thistles, multiflora rose, Japanese honeysuckle, poison ivy, I’m selective in my fight against certain plants. I’m even selective in where I fight my battles with plants. I pull garlic mustard in a nature preserve, a property of ACRES Land Trust. The property is a native preserve as well as a nature preserve, a place of native plants and animals. Garlic mustard is an intruder, a non-native. And I’m a volunteer, walking the trails, enjoying seeing native plants and birds and occasionally a squirrel or a deer or raccoon, and pulling garlic mustard.
