Briefs • New cockroach tough enough to take winter cold NEW YORK (AP) — The High Line, a park that turned a dilapidated stretch of elevated railway on Manhattan’s West Side into one of New York’s newest tourist attractions, may have brought a different kind of visitor: a cockroach that can withstand harsh winter cold and never seen before in the U.S. Rutgers University insect biologists Jessica Ware and Dominic Evangelista said the species Periplaneta japonica is well documented in Asia but was never confirmed in the United States until now. The scientists, whose findings were published in the Journal of Economic Entomology, say it is too soon to predict the impact but that there is probably little cause for concern. “Because this species is very similar to cockroach species that already exist in the urban environment,” Evangelista said, “they likely will compete with each other for space and for food.” That competition, Ware said, will likely keep the population low, “because more time and energy spent competing means less time and energy to devote to reproduction.” Michael Scharf, a professor of urban entomology at Purdue University, said the discovery is something to monitor. “To be truly invasive, a species has to move in and take over and out-compete a native species,” he said. “There’s no evidence of that, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be concerned about it.”
UN team to inspect uranium in Libya UNITED NATIONS (AP) — An inspection team from the U.N.’s nuclear agency will visit Libya to assess the thousands of barrels of yellowcake uranium that reportedly are being stored in a former military facility amid a “precarious” security situation in the country. The International Atomic Energy Agency team will arrive in the North African country this month to “verify existing stockpiles and conditions of storage,” the U.N. secretary-general’s special representative to Libya told the Security Council on Monday. Tarek Mitri said U.N. authorities have received information “indicating that 6,400 barrels are stored” under the control of an army battalion in a facility near Sabha, in the country’s unstable desert south, where militants and traffickers have roamed since the ouster of dictator Moammar Gadhafi in 2011. “Yellowcake” is concentrated natural uranium and the foundation material in the process to make nuclear fuel.
People • Former ‘Nanny’ to play Cinderella’s evil stepmother NEW YORK (AP) — Cinderella’s evil stepmom is about to be replaced by “The Nanny.” Producers of “Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella” said Monday that Fran Drescher will make her Broadway debut Feb. 4 in the show, playing Drescher Cinderella’s stepmother. Drescher’s 10-week run ends April 13. Drescher, an Emmy Award winner for “The Nanny” and whose film credits include “The Cadillac Man” and “This is Spinal Tap,” takes over the role created by Harriet Harris.

Rainbow Nation mourners share pain JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Along a street lined with walled mansions shaded by graceful jacaranda trees, mourners, black and white, by the thousands rubbed shoulders Monday outside the villa where Nelson Mandela died, placing flower bouquets and condolence notes on top of piles already knee-high. Others danced while singing praise for the anti-apartheid leader — a vivid example of the “Rainbow Nation” unity of race-blind multiculturalism championed by Mandela for South Africa. As players for the nation’s top Kaizer Chiefs soccer team were escorted inside the villa in one of the city’s most exclusive neighborhoods to grieve with Mandela’s relatives, hospital receptionist Nelson Jabulani Dube said the crowd of black, white and mixed race mourners transforming a street corner into a makeshift shrine was evidence that Mandela succeeded in breaking down barriers in a country defined for generations by race-based hate. “It’s all because of him, because he forgave the enemies at that time, they no longer are the enemies,”
said Dube, 33. “For me the outcome is really stunning and unites us, and what you see here is a reflection of that.” Michele Marija, an elderly white Johannesburg resident, spontaneously hugged a black woman, calling her “my sister,” after the woman made space for her so she could get a better view of the shrine. Then Marija’s daughters also hugged the woman. Marija insisted that her daughters and granddaughters visit Mandela’s house, saying his decision to forgive his white oppressors after being released from 27 years in jail saved South Africa from brutal bloodshed. “We could easily have had a revolution and here we are now all living happily together which is something like a miracle and it’s all due to Madiba,” Marija said, referring to Mandela by his clan name. Diane Mathabatha, a 60-year-old member of Mandela’s Xhosa tribe visiting Mandela’s house with her grandsons, remembered in the 1990s being bent on revenge along with much of her generation until Mandela got out of prison and said that would
Syrian troops seize town, road DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Syrian troops seized a key opposition-held town Monday along a major north-south highway critical for transporting the government’s chemical weapons stocks to a port where they could be shipped out for destruction by the international community. The government has been cooperating with chemical weapons inspectors, and the capture of the town of Nabek may make the transfer of the stocks go more smoothly. But the head of the global chemical arms watchdog warned that worsening security may make it difficult to meet a Dec. 31 deadline to remove the toxic chemicals from the country. The Syrian army has been on a crushing offensive in the mountainous Qalamoun region near the Lebanese border and has seized a string of towns and villages in the area near
the highway that connects Damascus with the city of Homs to the north. That road serves as a crucial link between the capital and northern Syria as well as government strongholds in the northwest along the Mediterranean. The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons said last week it would consider using the road to transport the chemical weapons to the port of Latakia from where the arms would be shipped for destruction abroad or at sea. Troops reopened the highway Sunday, nearly 20 days after it was closed because of the fighting. On Monday, state media said President Bashar Assad’s forces took full control of Nabek, which lies on the edge of the road. Lebanese fighters from the Iranian-backed Hezbollah group have aided the troops.
Tech companies pressure Obama WASHINGTON (AP) — Silicon Valley is escalating pressure on President Barack Obama to curb the U.S. government surveillance programs that vacuum personal information off the Internet and threaten the technology industry’s financial livelihood. A coalition that includes Google, Apple, Yahoo, Facebook and Microsoft lashed out in an open letter printed Monday in major newspapers and a new website, http://reformgovernmentsurveillance.com . The crusade united eight companies that often compete fiercely against each other, but now find themselves banding together to limit the potential damage from revelations about the National Security Agency’s snooping on Web surfers. Twitter Inc., LinkedIn Corp. and AOL Inc. joined Google Inc., Apple Inc., Yahoo Inc., Facebook Inc. and Microsoft Corp. in the push for tighter controls over electronic espionage. The group is immersed in the lives of just about everyone who uses the Internet or a computing device. As the companies’ services and products have become more deeply ingrained in society, they have become integral cogs
in the economy. Their prosperity also provides them with the cash to pay for lobbyists and fund campaign contributions that sway public policy. Monday’s public relations offensive is a by-product of documents leaked over the past six months by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. The records reveal that the NSA has been obtaining emails and other personal data from major tech companies under secret court orders for the past five years and scooping up other data through unauthorized hacking into data centers. Silicon Valley has been fighting back in the courts and in Congress as they seek reforms that would allow them to disclose more information about secret court orders. Several of the companies are also introducing more encryption technology to shield their users’ data from government spies and other prying eyes. Monday’s letter and the new anti-snooping website represent the technology industry’s latest salvo in an attempt to counter any perception that they voluntarily give the government access to users’ email and other sensitive information.
