Mutants may be lurking amongst us Hearthside Dinner October is upon us, and maybe I’m showing my age here, but I really like old movies from the ’80s. Growing up, my neighbor friend and I would make regular trips to the library to rent any horror movies we could find. Werewolves were a popular subject back then, no doubt because of Michael Jackson, but there were other more obscure films like “Little Shop of Horrors” that for some reason drew my attention. In this film, Seymour, the protagonist, works in a flower shop and happens upon a strange, yet beautiful plant that he names Audrey II after the woman he is in love with. The story consists of Seymour discovering that Audrey II is actually a mutant plant that grows larger than a man by feeding on blood and manipulating his “human” (Seymour) to get him this blood. Talk about adaptation and mutation.

This got me curious about real plants that mutate. I’ve lately been without Internet at my house, so I had to rely on my actual books to determine what TREES mutation AND is (sorry, TRAILS Google). I looked in index Brandy DePriest the of my Audubon Nature Encyclopedia and found that the only reference to mutation is under the entry for chestnuts. Here’s what it says: In the nature of all growth, which results from the multiplication of cells through cell division, there sometimes occurs an irregularity in the division of a

cell’s chromosomes. This is a mutation. With subsequent cells continuing to split in the same irregular manner, something new appears in nature. The entry comes from the American Chestnut, which has suffered from a blight (Endothia parasitica), beginning in 1904, that threatened the tree with extinction. The blight, apparently brought over by the Chinese Chestnut, ravaged the tree throughout the 20th century. However, the Chinese Chestnut holds an immunity to this disease, which is the result of a genetic mutation. The Chinese version thrives while the American version suffers on its own native soil. There are national groups that support the perpetuation of this species of tree. These groups spend a tremendous amount of time and energy thwarting the blight that another strain of this tree has mutated

itself against. Maybe mutant trees don’t drink blood and sing and manipulate like Audrey II does, but it still makes me wonder about what other mutations might be out there, seeming like normal vegetation, looking for the next wayward imagination to “feed” on. As we approach this spooky time of year, let’s be on the lookout for mutant species that threaten our native lands.
