Deaths & Funerals • ‘Bud’ Pfafman AVILLA — Byron John “Bud” Pfafman, age 83, of Avilla, died on Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at Parkview Noble Hospital, Kendallville, Indiana. Mr. Pfafman was born in York Township, Mr. Pfafman Albion, Indiana on November 27, 1930, to the late Royal Russell and Ethel Audra (Harlan) Pfafman. He graduated from Avilla High School in May of 1950 and married Wanda Lou Robart on August 16, 1950. In his early working days, Bud hauled milk for Allen Dairy. He retired from International Harvester in Fort Wayne. He was a lifetime Noble County farmer and raised and showed Belgium and Percheron draft horses for many years. He was a lifetime member of the DeKalb County Horseman’s Association. Bud showed his draft horses at the Noble County Fair and the DeKalb County Fair every year. He won the farmer’s draft horse show for seven years in a row. He was also an avid fan and supporter of Big Blue basketball. Bud was always on the front row at center court for the East Noble boys basketball games for many years. He was also an active and dedicated member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Avilla. Most importantly, Bud was a loving and dedicated husband, father and grandfather. Survivors include: his wife of 63 years, Wanda Pfafman of Avilla; daughter, Vicki and Rick James of Fort Wayne; daughter, Kathy and Todd Hile of Kendallville; son, Gary and Elizabeth Pfafman of rural Kendallville; son, Gregg and Mary Pfafman of Auburn. He was blessed with 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; brother, Kenny and Jane Pfafman of Bradenton, Florida; brother, Max and Pat Pfafman of Kendallville; sister, Donna Kurtz of Albion. He was also preceded in death by an infant brother and his brothers-in-law, Jack Kurtz and Robert Smurr. Visitation will be Friday, January 3, 2014, from 3:00-8:00 p.m. at Hite Funeral Home in Kendallville. Funeral services will be Saturday, January 4, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Calvary United Methodist Church in Avilla. There will be an hour of visitation before
the funeral service at the church. Officiating the funeral service will be Rev. Dr. Leonard King. Burial will be at Avilla Cemetery. Preferred memorials may be made to Calvary United Methodist Church, DeKalb County Horseman’s Association, or Parkview Noble Hospice. Casketbearers will be Matt Fetter, Nathan Immel, Bailey Parks, Joel Pfafman, Heath Pfafman, Zachery Pfafman and Trent Hile. WAWAKA — Mary Frances “Frannie” Myers, 86, passed away early Tuesday morning, December 31, 2013, at Northridge Village Nursing Home in Albion. She had been declining Mrs. Myers in health for the past three weeks. She was born on September 1, 1927, in Ligonier to Clyde and Vivian (Fought) Bish. She was a lifetime Noble County resident and graduated from Wawaka High School. After high school she married Carl Myers on June 9, 1946, and became a homemaker for her life’s work. Carl passed away on August 11, 2008. Frannie loved being surrounded by her family. WAWAKA — Don Arthur Bish, age 84, of Wawaka, IN passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at his home. He was born on March 26, 1929 to Clyde and Vivian (Fought) Bish in Topeka, Indiana. On August Mr. Bish 4, 1956 he married Mary Ellizabeth Tredway, she survives. He graduated from Wawaka High School in 1947 as Valedictorian of his class. He had worked as a dispatcher and truck driver at Frick Services in Wawaka, IN. He attended Wawaka Church of the Brethren. He enjoyed mowing grass and worked for the Elkhart Township taking care of the cemeteries and ball diamonds. Mr. Bish enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Surviving are his wife, Mary of Wawaka; four children, Pamela Whitford of Houston Texas, Michael Bish of Goshen, Donald Bish of Brimfield, Cindy McGill of Albion; 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Mr. Bish is also survived by a brother, Robert Bish of Wawaka, and a sister, Frances Myers of Albion. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother George from Syracuse, a sister Elizabeth from LaGrange, and a grandson Andrew Michael. There is a time of visitation today from 2-6 p.m. at Yeager Funeral Home, 1585 Lincolnway South, Ligonier IN 46767. A private cremation committal will take place at a later date. ANGOLA — Charles Daniel “Chuck” Skove, 97, of Angola, Indiana passed away Monday, December 30, 2013, at Lakeland Nursing Center. He was born September 26, 1916, in Cleveland, Ohio, to John Mr. Skove and Louise (Meyer) Skove. He married Irene B. Bodley on October 9, 1937. Chuck graduated from Tri-State College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1937. He worked at Butler Brown Mining, Nashwauk, Minn., in 1937; Richard’s Grocery Store, Angola; Sunrise Dairy, Angola and Golden Auto Parts, Angola between the years 1938-1939. From 1940-1945 he worked for GE in Fort Wayne, and from 1946 to when he retired in 1978 he was a purchasing agent for Dana Weatherhead in Angola, Ind. He was a founding member of the Pleasant View Church of Christ, Angola, Ind.; instrumental in the Historic Power Church Restoration; he was involved with the Angola Youth Center; Junior Chamber of Commerce and Tri-State Alumni Association. He was a member of the Associated Churches and the Steuben County Historical Society where he was County Historian for several years. Upon retirement he and his wife wintered in Pine Island, Florida, from 1978-2001. He was able to take a dream of a lifetime trip in 1995 to Denmark with his granddaughter Yvonne to visit the home of his ancestors. He was always interested in history and family lineage. Chuck never knew a stranger and always remembered everyone. He is survived by his two granddaughters, Marie Diane Warmbier-Smith of Pleasant Lake, Ind., and Beth Yvonne Warmbier-Ramp of Northville, Mich.; his son-in-law, Daniel Warmbier of Three Oaks, Mich.; his brother, Robert John Skove of Houston, TX; three great-grandchildren, Arianna Ramp, Isabella Ramp and Simon Whalls Warmbier. He was fond of his companion, Dexter, his cat. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Irene B. Skove on October 15, 2002; his daughter, Carol Warmbier on Nov. 11, 2013; his grandson, Jason Skove Warmbier in 2008; and his sister, Janet Louise Pumphrey. Services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 4, 2014, at the Pleasant View Church of Christ in Angola, Indiana. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. AVILLA — Dutch Kostielney, 87, lifetime Avilla resident, community civic leader and distinguished U.S. Army veteran, died on Monday, December 30, 2013, at 8:55 a.m. at his residence in Avilla. He had been Mr. Kostielney in declining health with congestive heart failure for the last two months. Dutch was born on July 18, 1926, in Avilla, the only son of Martin and Laura (Fulk) Kostielney. He graduated from Avilla High School in the Class of 1944. On January 15, 1954, he married Emma Jean “Emmy” Weeks. She passed away on November 5, 2008. Mr. Kostielney retired as the Postmaster at the Avilla Post Office after 25 years of service. He was a decorated war veteran, serving as a corporal in the United States Army during World War II. He fought in the European Theater and received a Purple Heart after being wounded. Dutch was the Allen Township Trustee and Assessor, was on the Allen Townsip Advisory Board, and an avid Cubs and IU fan. He was a member of the Avilla American Legion Post #240. He helped establish Avilla Youth Baseball in the 1960s, and served on the Community State Bank Board of Directors. He and Emmy were very involved with youth sports in Avilla. Dutch enjoyed hunting, but his greatest love was gardening. Surviving are his son and daughter in law, Stanley and Janet Kostielney of Lake of the Woods; grandchildren, Matthew (Rebecca) Kostielney and Nathan Kostielney, all of Avilla; a sister, Mary Lou Kostielney of Phoenix, Arizona. His buddy was Hobo the Cat. Funeral services will be on Friday, January 3, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Brazzell Funeral Home, Avilla Chapel. The Rev. Dr. Leonard King of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Avilla will officiate. Burial will follow at the Hooper King Cemetery near Avilla. The Avilla American Legion Post #240 will conduct military graveside rites. Serving as pallbearers will be Nathan Kostielney, Bill Weeks, Don Weeks, Ray Grocock, Judy Grocock, Carla Jo Kanney and Jackie Henry. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Bianski, Dyke Grate, Bob Weeks, Kenny Conkling, Anthony Henry and Caleb Henry.
