Railroaders roll in home finale BUTLER — The Garrett boys soccer team closed out its regular season with a 6-0 victory over county rival Eastside Wednesday. Dayton Sweet got the ball rolling with an early score off a double assist from Kaleb Sweet Hoover and Carlos Jimenez. Hoover and Karsten Cooper then assisted on a goal by Blake Western to Cooper make it 2-0. Cooper then put the Railroaders up 3-0. Garrett goalie Reiley Pugh made two saves in the first half to keep the score 3-0. Sweet scored again and Erik Savage scored on a crossing pass from Sam Waterhouse to make the score 5-0 at the half. Cooper scored his second just six minutes into the second half off a pass from Sweet.

Railroader girls improve in ACAC PONETO — The Garrett girls cross country team won a three-way meet Tuesday at Southern Wells High School. The Railroaders improved to 4-1 in the Allen County Athletic Conference with the wins. Garrett defeated Southern Wells 27-28 and Bluffton 17-38. Maranda Malcom was the overall winner for Garrett, finishing in 20:43. Amanda Stump was third in 21:12. Danielle Stump was sixth, Rachel Hood eighth and Raistlyn Lehman 11th. The Garrett boys team split in its competition, defeating Southern Wells 24-31 and falling to Bluffton, 19-36. The Railroaders are now 3-2

Barons handle Garrett, 9-0 WATERLOO — The DeKalb girls soccer team defeated Garrett Tuesday, 9-0. The Barons raced out to a 5-0 lead by halftime and never looked back. Taya Poynter scored three goals in the victory. Maddie VanWye added two goals.
Girls 9th, boys 13th at New Haven FORT WAYNE — Garrett girls placed ninth and boys 13th in Class AA at Saturday’s New Haven Invitational. Miranda Malcolm lead the girls Malcolm at 12th in 20:16.09. Teammate Amanda Stump was 28th in 21:34.11. Angola was 12th in the class, with Josey Foster Korte running to seventh in 19:53.85. Alexis Buck placed 39th. Lakeland followed in 14th, with Massie Maskow taking 30th in 21:38.52. Fremont’s Abby Hostetler placed second in the girls Class AA run, helping the 22nd-ranked Eagles to first place in their class. Teammate Katie Culler followed in sixth in a time of 19:38.26. Courtney Woosley was 13th in 20:39.32, Riley Welch claimed 15th in 20:44.82, Makenna Cade placed 17th in 20:49.66 and Riley McCrea took 94th in 25:51.53. Youth basketball, God’s MVP merge GARRETT — The Garrett Youth League and God’s MVP basketball programs for boys in grades 3-6 have teamed up this year. The season begins Nov. 2 with eight games to be played Saturday mornings in the middle school gym, with one practice night per week. The season continues through Dec. 21. The program will add the use of a scoreboard and referees, and will be led by volunteer coaches. Those interested in coaching must attend a coaches’ clinic on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. to be part of the program. Enter door 20. Potential coaches will hear expectations, behavior, drills and offensive and defensive drills during the session. The $30 registration fee includes T-shirt, jersey and shorts. Evaluation and uniform sizing will be from 1-2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6 in the middle school gym. Those unable to register in advance can sign up on try-out day. Information was handed out at Garrett and St. Joseph schools last week, and will be available at the school offices. Fifer also was honored as the intermediate dairy beef showman. Cole Kelham’s grand champion market lamb sold for $1,600, and Vince Marshall’s reserve grand champion market lamb attracted a high bid of $2,000. “Friends and Family of Taylor Rowe” bid $2,600 for Rowe’s swine, which was the reserve grand champion barrow. Rowe is a 10-year 4-H’er and attends Purdue University. Grand champion dairy winner Matthew Jacobs received a bid of $1,300, with the buyer taking home a horn of cheese. Milan Center Feed and Grain bid $1,100 for a number of items, including a miniature model of a horse, homemade pies, apples and a gift card auctioned by the 4-H Horse and Pony Club. Ariel McCoy leads Trine at jamboree ADRIAN, Mich. — Freshman Austin Ganger and Garrett’s Ariel McCoy led Trine’s cross country teams in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Jamboree Saturday at Lenawee Christian High School.
