Fire destroys garage, damages home By Sue Carpenter scarpenter@kpcmedia.com GARRETT — No one was injured by a fire early morning Monday that destroyed a garage and vehicle and heavily damaged a home in the 700 block of East King Street. The Garrett Fire Department responded to a call from a neighbor at 1:01 a.m., said Assistant Fire Chief Chad Werkheiser. Firefighters arrived four minutes later and found a car and detached garage fully involved in flames, which extended to the residence. They brought the fire under control in about 20 minutes. The home’s occupants, Ben Rollins and family, were awakened by a

neighbor and exited the structure safely. The family pets also were uninjured. The garage and vehicle were total losses. Werkheiser estimated damage at $60,000 to structures, $10,000 to contents and $15,000 to the vehicle. A neighboring home sustained heat damage to its siding. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Werkheiser said. Firefighters remained at the scene until 4:30 a.m. The Garrett Fire Department was assisted at the scene by Garrett Police Department, DeKalb EMS and Auburn Fire Department. The Corunna Fire Department provided stand-by coverage.

Railroad offers to pay for removing rusty bridge By Aaron Organ aorgan@kpcmedia.com AUBURN — CSX Railroad has offered to pay for removing a corroded, historic iron-truss bridge on C.R. 75 over the railroad tracks, east of St. Joe. The railroad’s propsed agreement was presented to the DeKalb County Commissioners late last week. Just days earlier, the DeKalb County Council voted down a request from the commissioners to pay $72,725 for a design and engineering plan for removing the bridge. Considered a “select” bridge on the Indiana Historic Bridge inventory list, the bridge is in “very poor condition,” according to a consultant. Monday, representatives of USI Consultants told the commissioners that railroad officials see the bridge as a safety concern. The CSX proposal lays out plans for the railroad to handle dismantling the bridge and to reimburse the county for creating cul-desacs in the road on either side of the span. The project that would cost upward of $300,000, according to the consultants.

The bridge would be stored on county property and potentially placed on a trail system just south of St. Joe when federal funding comes through, the plan says. Monday, commissioners expressed concern with the bridge and the liability the county takes on by keeping it open. They cited fears of a section or the entirety of the bridge falling onto a passing train. Commissioners also raised questions about how residents in the area would travel without the bridge. Building a bridge on the site or nearby could run nearly $3 million, the consultants said. The existing bridge cannot support more than the weight of a pickup truck, the consultants said, and residents must travel some six miles to find a suitable bridge to cross the tracks. A traffic study has shown 43 vehicles a day use the span. The commissioners will present another request to the council for funding the $72,000 design plan, with the railroad paying for the project. The railroad’s proposed agreement calls for a contract to be adopted

before the end of the year. Also Monday, commissioners said they will consider a request from the county Plan Commission to change the addresses of select homes on C.R. 40-A, or Wesley Road, inside the Auburn city limits. Plan director Clint Knauer said sections of the road change from Wesley Road to C.R. 40-A and back again several times, and addresses have both odd and even numbers on the same side of the road. The mix-up results from annexations to the city, Knauer explained. The commissioners tabled the request under the assumption that at some point in the future, the remaining county land will be annexed into the city, and readdressing will be handled then. Commissioners approved a request from the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival to use county property for a Kiddie Cruiser Activity event Aug. 30 and 31. The festival will stage the event on a lawn west of the jail. It will include a bungee activity, rock wall and other games in conjunction with the ACD Festival.
