DESIGN

This portfolio exhibits work from my three years of interior design practice at the University of North Texas including commercial design, hospitality design, and residential design. Each project highlights the design process, space planning, construction documents, renderings, and material and furnishing selection. These are thoughtful environments that consider both style and place, people and the planet. I believe that the most beautiful designs are those that work effortlessly for the people who inhabit them.

CONDO

Project overview:

This residential condo was located in a high-rise building in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Starting with a completely blank floor plan, we needed to design a space for 2 clients while paying careful attention to a specific medical condition one of our clients had.

Project concept statement:

I will create an environment that captures the individuality of my clients by designing a space that not only accommodates a specific birth defect but also highlights its uniqueness. This condo will transform into a place of emotional connection and will become an area where my clients will feel celebrated for being themselves. Along with the use of texture, I will use the element of line to enhance the visual appeal of the space. With the combination of these principles, this condo will be an excellent environment for my clients to start a new chapter of life.

Medical condition:

One of my clients was born with a birth defect called “morning glory syndrome”, named after the morning glory flower, that makes them completely blind in their right eye with limited sight in their left eye. The inspiration behind my client’s medical condition was myself because I was born with this birth defect. This was a good opportunity for me because I’ve never seen a design that accommodates my rare birth defect before.

LIVING SPACE DINING SPACE LONG VIEW 5

Floor plan- Because my client is blind in their right eye, and can only see out of their left eye, I made the right side of the condo private and the left side of the condo public from where you enter the space. I made the left side of their home, the side of the eye they can see out of, completely open for a clear line of sight so they can see and be a part of anything that takes place in those key spaces.

Use of line-Throughout the condo I used a lot of horizontal lines such as the ceiling beams, the flooring, the use of an L-shaped kitchen, and the dining space to give the illusion of a wider area.

Materials-The colors black and white I used throughout the condo represent the darkness of the blind eye and the light of the working eye. I used natural materials such as wood to create a relaxing environment in addition to the wallcovering with morning glory flowers on it to remind the client of their uniqueness.

KITCHEN

Project overview:

The objective of this project was to remodel a residential kitchen. The requirements included a walk-in pantry, barstool seating, a plentiful amount of storage, and good circulation.

Design choices:

My clients wanted the kitchen to be the heart of their home. They needed a space that allowed them to entertain while also being functional. My clients said they spend a good amount of time in their kitchen so I chose colors and materials that were elegant but also created a sense of belonging and relaxation. The contrast between the dark and light materials creates balance and unity. I made sure to choose materials that were sustainable, durable, and most importantly, we’re easy to clean. I added some warmth into the space with the runner because it provides color and a new texture. Lastly, the addition of living plants boosts creativty and promotes recovery.

2-STORY HOME

Project overview:

This was the project we learned the BIM software, Revit. We learned how to create a project from start to finish. The final construction document set included the title sheet, renderings, site plans, floor, and reflected ceiling plans, exterior and interior elevations, sections and cross sections, and door and window schedules. We went into careful detail in order to grasp what a real project would look like and consist of. Rather than focusing on material and furniture selection, we spent more time learning how to construct official documents in addition to how to make walls, stairs, ceilings, windows, and more structural elements. We went as far as creating our own project title blocks, symbols, and dimensions we would use for projects to come.

Project overview: This project was a part of a presentation techniques class. We took one of our previous projects and photoshopped all new materials into it after we finished learning about the best materials to use for flooring, walls, ceilings, furniture, and more. In the photo you see above, every material in it is photoshopped as I started with a blank, black and white line drawing.

RESTAURANT

Project overview:

This project was a bar and restaurant located in Dallas, Texas around 9,700 square feet including a 7,000 square foot kitchen. Concept development, schematic design, design development, construction documents, and design reviews/presentations made up the project timeline. Requirements for seating capacity were 200 total seats for the restaurant and 60 total seats for the bar area, not including the outdoor patio. Using code requirements, I designed to accommodate American Disabilities Accessibility Guidelines, occupant load, circulation, aisles, and clearances. My restaurant had a Mediterranean cuisine while displaying the prospect and refuge theory as I used evidence-based design to create my project.

3-LEVEL OFFICE

Project overview:

This project introduced commercial and office design. We were required to create an office building that had private offices for entry, manager, and CEO level workers, a reception area, a break area, and a conference room that held 12 people. The importance of ADA codes, building standards, material selection, and space planning was illustrated throughout the 3 levels of this building.

Project overview:

This project consisted of designing an office space for an interior design firm using an open office plan layout. The core concept of this office space was to create a productive environment based on the theory of flexible work. Using a variety of sit-stand desks, cubicles, and private and public spaces, I was able to make a workspace that encouraged better work performance and personal wellness.

Project overview:

This project was a semester-long project consisting of a full document set including 15 pages of floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, furniture plans, enlarged plans, and detailed plans. This was an office space for a non-profit organization for educational purposes in addition to events and gatherings. Throughout the project, we paid special attention to all of the details that go into a project starting from construction to the final product. Structural elements, material selection, space planning, and final documents were all included when developing this project.

Project overview:

This project was a semester-long project consisting of a full document set including the title sheet, life safety plan, construction plan, reflected ceiling plan, power and communication plan, furniture plan, finish plan, elevations, sections, details, and legends.

The project was a 44,000 square foot office space intended for the company pinterest. Throughout the concept development, design development, and construction documents the goal was to create an office space that highlighted the company’s core values and culture. Concept statements and design strategies helped highlight the way Pinterest opperates and functions as a company in addition to the way the FF&E selections helped encourage a healthy office environment.
