60 KVADRAT

RENOVATION OF A RESTAURANT IN UPPSALA in charge of the arch. presentation arch. team: Elephant Design client: Kostas Sapounas Uppsala, Sweeden 2020

60 Kvadrat’s new restaurant concept is “The Swedish Art of Balanced Living”. We explored the balance between familiarity and coziness, creating a modern atmosphere with a strong Nordic style. With its simple ultra-matte walls, the warm colours, and the wooden flooring, the interior hints references to the traditional Swedish architecture, which is matched beautifully with furniture by contemporary Danish designers. The result is a warm and inviting atmosphere, full of life and joy, yet calm and relaxing. Elephant design wanted to create an environment that locals can relate to, and feel at home.

BYOB

#BRING YOUR OWN BACKGROUD graphics for a series of online exhibitions creative team: Elephant Design Nea Erithrea, Athens & online 2020-

Bring-Your-Own-Background is an ongoing series of art exhibitions. BYOB was initially planed to take place in the physical space of Elephant Design studio. However, due to the recent lockdown, it went virtual. The artworks, thus, are presented, in relation to the space, in forms of archictural illustrations, gifs, 3d renders and videos. Bring-Your-Own-Background aims to give the viewers the opportunity to discover- either on their mobile phone or pc screen- works of art, artists, and their creative process, just like they would do if they visited an actual exhibition, a museum or a gallery.

HOUSING ARCH. DESIGN III

academic work course: Architectural Design III partner: Argyro Efstathiou prof: Nelly Marda Filopappou Hill, Athens autumn 2013

My partner and I began the designing process by imagining the people that were going to live in the house and their particular needs. We imagined a young family of four. The father, Aris, was a photographer. The mother, Maria, was a greek teacher. Together they had two children, Iasonas and Iris, 3 and 5 years old respectively. Aris would want a rather dark and quiet workshop. Maria would like a study, secluded from the rest of the house yet allowing visual contact with it, so that she can have an eye on the kids. Iasonas and Iris would like much space to run and play. Additionally, we imagined a house with big openings and views to the beautiful hill of Filopappou. These very first thoughts gradually shaped into architecture.

DANCE SCHOOL ARCH. DESIGN VIII

academic work course: Architectural Design VIII partners: Christina Salib, Anna Chatzigeorgiou prof: Stavros Gyftopoulos, Eirini Efesiou Gazi, Athens spring 2017

The main idea was to connect the school with the park across the street, expanding its limits to the public space and making the school, thus the art of dance, easily accessible to the public. The linear bridge became the central element of the composition, bringing together the movement of the public and the movement of the dancer. The ground floor (theater) and the first floor (cafeteria and bridge to the park) were completely open to the public. The rest of the building was to be used only by the dancers. Having resolved the general design and the function of the building, we focused on construction detailing.

SOCIAL HOUSING ARCH. DESIGN IX

academic work course: Architectural Design IX partner: Tatiana Zoumpoulaki prof: Kostas Moraitis Elaionas, Athens autumn 2016

Elaionas, a former olive grove of Athens, is now an urban wasteland just a few meters away from the centre of the city. A seemingly grey zone: vacant land, industries -most of them abandoned- and a refugee camp. In this huge unused land, we saw the opportunity to create a new living area based on the principles of permaculture. The garden became the center of each house (zone 0) and of each housing unit (zone 1 and 2). Cultivations and olive groves -both for domestic use and for trade purposes- were introduced in the greater area (zone 3). A commercial pedestrian street was also formed, giving to a square in the middle and creating the centre of the neighbourhood. Looking back at our project now, I see certain qualities, like the general concept, the design of the housing units and the spatial variety that is produced with their different combinations. I recognize though certain weaknesses as well, such as the lack of a more specific scenario and the lack of a more detailed design of the central square.

PARK FIX - CITIZENS PARK

PARTICIPATION / SELF-ADMINISTRATION / SELF-CONSTRUCTION diploma thesis individual project with the participation of people prof: Nicholaos Anastasopoulos Park Fix, Patisia, Athens autumn 2018

Subject of my diploma thesis was the re-activation of Fix Park as a public space of Kato Patisia -one of the most densely populated and constructed neighbourhoods of Athens- through the active participation and collaboration of its inhabitants. It was based on my research project, where bottom-up and participatory methods and processes for the production of public space were investigated. A main part of the project was the organisation and the realisation of a participatory design workshop, as well as the use of other methods for engaging citizens. My aim was to familiarise the local community with participatory practices and to open up architecture, out of the borders of the introvert architecture school. I consciously focused more on production processes, social processes and relationships, recycling and reusing materials and less on form or individual advancement. The park was imagined as a flexible space that would host different individual and group activities, administrated by the citizens and other stakeholders. Three kinds of mobile and easy-to-construct modules, combined to each other would allow the housing of a wide range of activities.

TAPE COCOON INSTALLATION

academic work course: Plastic Arts IV individual project prof: Kostas Daflos Architecture school of Athens, Greece spring 2014

The public space of the Architecture school of Athens is in its great majority abandoned, not taken proper care of and even vandalised- sometimes by the students themselves. On top of that, and surprisingly enough for being an architecture school, it is lacking any kind of furniture that would allow students to come together and relax between classes. These observations led me to make an installation at an unused space of the school, inviting people to rethink their space. I was inspired by the form of the cocoon, as in my mind it symbolized the growth of (social) life. To achieve this sculptural result, I chose tape as it is an affordable material with an extraordinary ability to produce space. The tape, a one-dimensional line, through the act of chaotic wrapping, slowly turned into a two-dimensional plane, which then finally curved into a volume. The moment that people entered the installation, what looked like a sculpture seamlessly morphed into architecture.

SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL MURAL

voluntary work for the Primary School of Nenita Chios, Greece summer 2017

In summer 2017, I got asked by the headteacher of the primary school of Nenita in Chios to paint a mural on the main façade of the school. I used geometric shapes and bright colours to create a fun composition, making it simple enough so that children could participate in the painting process. I was inspired by the windows, the staircase and the plant pots of the façade and I tried to incorporate them into the mural. The children, the teachers and other inhabitants of the village welcomed their freshly painted school with great excitement.

LA BIBLIOTECA DE BABEL CHARCOAL DRAWING

academic work - exchange student at ETSAB course: Architectural Representation I individual project prof: Judit Taberna Torres voted the best student work, exhibited during EGA 2016 spring 2016

“The universe (which others call the Library) is composed of an indefinite, perhaps infinite number of hexagonal galleries. From any hexagon one can see the floors above and below-one after another, endlessly. In the vestibule there is a mirror which faithfully duplicates appearances. Men often infer from this mirror that the Library is not infinite -if it were, what need would there be for that illusory replication? I prefer to dream that burnished surfaces are a figuration and promise of the infinite...” Jorge Luis Borges in his short story The library of Babel (1941) describes meticulously a space giving many hints of how the space could be, but leaving, at the same time, many issues open to interpretation, like the perception of a doubtful infinity. Trying to interpret the author’s words, I imagined the Library of Babel as an immersive kaleidoscopic space, endless, chaotic, and perhaps an illusion. My artwork was voted the best student work of the year and was exhibited during the XVI Architectural Graphic Expression International Conference (EGA 2016) at the University of Alcalá in Spain.
