Unique voice of Golden era

he Hindi film industry’s golden era cannot be discussed without taking Manna Dey’s exemplary contribution into account. Not only did he pioneer a new genre by infusing classical music in a pop framework, the legendary singer also epitomized the golden period of Hindi cinema with memorable songs like Puchho na kaise, Aye meri zoharajabi and Laga chunri mein daag. Along with Rafi, Mukesh, and Kishore Kumar, Dey was the last member of the famous quartet of singers who dominated the Hindi music industry from 1950s to 1970s. In a career spanning over five decades, Dey went on to sing over 3,500 songs in Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada and Assamese films before quitting movies in the ‘90s. His last song was Hamari hi mutthi mein for 1991 film Prahaar. While Rafi, Mukesh and Kishore were the favored voices when it came to the lead actors, Dey stood out for his unique voice. Adept also at singing Rabindra Sangeet, the multi-talented legendary singer’s experimentation with western music and qawwali produced many unforgettable melodies. Dey, who had made Bangalore his

gali and a Marathi film of the same name and storyline, Amar Bhupali, and established himself as a booming Bengali playback singer that in years to come took him to greater heights. Dey was much in demand for complicated raag-based songs and was once even pitted against his idol Bhimsen Joshi in 1956 movie Basant Bahar for Ketki, gulab, juhi song, something that he initially refused. While his mastery over classical numbers somewhat pigeonholed him, the uniqueness of his voice made it impossible for any singer to replicate him. A meticulous singer, Dey would often prepare extensively before rendering a song. The singer gave credit to Shankar-Jaikishan for understanding his depth as a singer. Dey started singing for showman Raj Kapoor in Aawara, Shri 420 and Chori Chori. “I am especially indebted to Shankerji, for had it not been for his patronage, I would certainly not have attained the heights of success I enjoyed in my career. Here was one man who knew how to bring out the best in me. In fact, he was the first music director who dared to experiment with my voice by making me sing romantic numbers,” Dey recalled in his autobiography Memories Come Alive.

riyanka Chopra’s younger brother recently got engaged, but she is not under any pressure to get married. “My brother wanted to do it and in my family we all support each other. Thankfully, I don’t have any pressure to get married from my family. My dad never put this pressure on me to settle down,” Priyanka, who lost her father to cancer, said in a group interview.

Bachchan M egastar Amitabh Bachchan and versatile Sridevi are likely to come together for the sequel of 1992 super-hit film, ‘Khuda Gawah’. Amitabh Bachchan has almost given his nod for the film. “The script is being written for the sequel. It (film) was one of the most loved films and we thought of bringing it back. We have given a one liner brief idea to Mr Bachchan. We have got a positive feedback from him. Once the script is complete we will meet him again and approach him for this film,” producer Manoj Desai said. “Once Mr Bachchan gives his nod for the sequel we may go and talk to Sridevi as well about the film,” he said. Sridevi has also showed keen interest for the sequel. ‘Khuda Gawah’ is about an Afghan lord caught between love and revenge. I am getting a lot more respect than I ever did, and this is what I had worked hard for. It is interesting to see the faith my directors have in me. They visualise me in drastically different roles — Tigmanshu Dhulia could see me as a dacoit from Chambal in Revolver Rani, Vikas Bahl thought of me as an average-looking girl who comes from a small town in Queen and Vishwas Patil, my Rajjo director, thinks I am very sensuous and therefore he cast me as a girl from Nagpada who dances for a living. So which one is the real Kangana most similar to – Rajjo, Queen or Revolver Rani? None. I relate a lot to my superwoman character in Krrish 3 (laughs). But you can’t expect me to jump from a building.

Revolver Rani has more action than I have ever done, and I have never been so brutal. Was it difficult to play a mutant with superhuman powers? I had to look very stylish and seductive in Krrish 3. The action was a bit difficult though. My hair would often get entangled in the cables. Playing a mutant was easier than doing the action in Revolver Rani for sure. Revolver Rani is a politician-dacoit and I am beating up people with belts in the movie. Every woman is going to love it (laughs). Revolver Rani has more action than I have ever done, and I have never been so brutal. My character is not at all good looking – I have used prosthetic scars and a crooked nose. Would you say you keep changing your style statement? While working with Milan Luthria in Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai, he paid me a compliment and called me a chameleon. I played an actress, who appears in many wigs and attires. Everyone was amazed at how I managed to look different every time. And now after Krrish 3, I am the official chameleon. I enjoy being unpredictable.

He does 1000 push-ups or 2000 sit-ups a day during intense workout sessions. He is against taking any kind of medicine and always believes in maintaining body naturally. Workout Routine: Jogging/cycling for an hour; Dead Lifts up to improve leg and back muscles; Bench Press, Shoulder Press. When he has less time, he does circuit with crunches, reverse crunches, back extensions and side planks for at least 25 minutes in different circuits. Diet Salman Khan sometimes gets up early morning during his movie shoots and drinks water. He likes to drink oxygenated water which helps to energise him. Morning: Eggs, bread and butter, mixed vegetables, chapatis, low fat milk. Sometimes he takes heavy breakfast when he is not busy shooting or he is spending time with his family. Akshay – The oneman-army

atyakant Shastri (Mithun Chakraborty) is an honest and upright teacher hailing from a small town in India. His son Shiv (Shiv Pandit) lands up in Delhi where he encounters the gorgeous Ankita (Aditi Rao Hydari). Standing in the way of their romance is a deadly trio – Ankita’s brother (a ruthless cop), the Home Minister and the Home Minister’s son (who wants Ankita for himself). A plan is hatched to target Shiv and the trio succeeds in framing him for something he hasn’t done. Satyakant’s world comes crashing down as he watches Shiv being punished and sent behind bars. Satyakant is left with only one option – to reach out to his elder son, who is now more popularly known as Boss (Surya, Akshay Kumar), to save Shiv. Boss is a one-man-army and a man everyone fears. When the father reaches out to the son he had once disowned for help, Boss leaves everything behind and makes that his mission.

ar Chhod Na Yaar casts a satirical eye on the hot-button issue of border relations between India and Pakistan, and turns the spotlight on the troops stationed either side of the barbed-wire fence. Those troops are led by Captain Rana (Sharman Joshi) of the Indian army, and Captain Qureshi (Javed Jaffrey) on the Pakistani side. When TV reporter Ruth Dutta (Soha Ali Khan) travels to the border to shoot a story about an oncoming war, she discovers that a warm friendship exists between the soldiers on both sides, who’re happier to face off in a round of antaakshri than open fire on the other. Writer-director Faraz Haider uses humour to make the point about China and America’s interests in exploiting Indo-Pak tension. He addresses the apathy of both governments towards their respective armies. There’s even a running joke about underfed Pakistani soldiers searching for the gosht in their daal. But the gratuitous romantic stirrings between army man and reporter feel just that: gratuitous. And how many times can you make the same joke about cheap unreliable Chinese products? 1300797012

am-Leela is a romantic-drama directed and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. It stars Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone as the eponymous leads. The film is said to be an adaptation of Shakespeare’s epic love story Romeo and Juliet, set in violent times. The story of the film is set in Gujarat. In Udaipur, Ranveer Singh shot a song sequence in freezing cold water for about 45 minutes. Padukone was injured on set, however had to continue shooting as an expensive set was put up at Film City for a song. A gym was set up in Filmcity Mumbai for lead actor Ranveer so that he should not be late for shooting. Singh, who is playing a Gujarati boy, had to learn some Gujarati abuses as well as gain muscle for his character in the film. The first look of the film shows Padukone sporting a 30 kg ghaghra with a 50 metre ‘ghera’. Richa Chadda of Gangs of Wasseypur fame is also signed on to play a significant role. Barkha Bisht plays a supporting role opposite Abhimanyu Shekhar Singh (of Gulaal fame).

Krrish 3 is a family drama, a story about a father and a son and the wife, and how the super-villain enters the scene. They don’t meet till the interval. How circumstances make them meet is the story, keeping emotion as the base.
