Key Interview Takeaways •

• Have visited sites that had no way to compare neighborhoods in a side by side view. They had to open up different windows/ tabs in their browser and switch back and • forth between them

Found it helpful to talk to residents and realtors who are already familiar with the neighborhoods

Wished there was an easier way to save searches.

USER INTERVIEWS

Interest in relocating to a location that has access to a stable & warm climate, healthcare access, and transportation Most sites had too much content & geared towards purchasing a home v.s. gaining information about a neighborhood

Livably | p.8

Too much nav, conflicts and takes away from the search feature. What happens if you want to enter more than one location? I have to put one location in order to get to the compare feature which is on the results page at the bottom of the screen. This is great and unique. Why can’t it be the main feature?

COMPETITIVE RESEARCH

Competitive Research: This section compares each sites appeal, look, and ease of use. This is subjective to the designer, and not the actual user.

This section compares each sites ability to search and to save favorites.

Project Brief: Livably is an app that allows users to compare three different locations simultaneously, allowing for better decision making. This is a unique opportunity and product that can set AARP apart, and position it and it’s research in a new market.

PROJECT BRIEF

Livably | p.11

BRUCE KNIGHT | MONTCLAIR, NJ “All the kids have moved on with their lives, and we’re slowly aging out of our house. I can’t keep up with all these steps and the weather anymore.”

Age: 62 Retired?: Yes Caregiver?: No Marital Status: Married Familial Status: Empty Nester

Bruce & his wife love their current neighborhood in Montclair, NJ but the weather is getting to uncomfortable for them. Also they live in a multi-story house that no longer has any beneficial function for the couple. They would like to move to a state that has a milder climate, a neighborhood similar to the one they’re in, and a home fit for aging adults. Pain Points: • Loves NJ but it’s winters are unbearable • Finds it difficult to compare multiple locations • Visited sites that were focused on purchasing a home but does not give neighborhood specifics • He noticed that some sites scores neighborhoods but he would also like to talk to the residents • Most real estate sites don’t specify 55 & over communities

USER PERSONAS

Ideal Location: • • • • •

Mild weather Access to transportation Close to hospitals Residents are close in age Entertainment options so when their kids come to visit they have something to do

Goals: • Move to a location that is similar to their current neighborhood • Make new friends • Live more comfortably

Livably | p.12

ROBYN SMITHLY | TULSA, OK “I want to help find the perfect neighborhood and home for my dad. He wants to feel more independent and the current city he lives in is very limiting for someone with a disability. ”

Age: 32 Retired?: No Caregiver?: Yes Marital Status: Married Familial Status: 1 Child

Robyn is a stay at home mom to her new born child, and a part time caregiver to her father. Her dad, for the most part can manage things on his own, but is wheel chair bound. He is frustrated that there are not a lot of things to do for people in his condition, or transportation options. Robyn wants to find a place thats fitting for her father to live comfortably and independently. Pain Points: • Most neighborhood ranking sites do not give the option to email. She would like to keep her husband and father in the loop when she’s finding possible places • She finds that most descriptions to neighborhoods are very vague • She wants an all in one website that reviews and informs a person about the neighborhood • Real estates sites don’t have an option to filter out 1 story homes

USER PERSONAS

Ideal Location: • Job opportunities as Robyn’s husband is the only one making income • Affordable • Close to parks, grocery stores, and entertainment venues • Close to hospitals for her father and her baby’s check ups

Goals: • Compare locations, save research, and email comparrisons to dad & husband • Find a neighborhood that’s perfect for their situation

Livably | p.13

BARBARA GREYSON | LOS ANGELES, CA “Eventually I want to slow down and live a quieter life when I retire. I want to explore possible options from coast to coast and see where my search takes me.”

Age: 58 Retired?: No Caregiver?: No Marital Status: Divorced Familial Status: No Kids

Barabara has a few more years before she retires. She’s planning ahead and wants to explore different neighborhoods in comparrison to Los Angeles. Barbara wants a quieter lifestyle compared to her LA life but still wants the options of entertainment, to make friends with people around her age, and to live somewhere affordable. Pain Points: • Visited sites that were focused on purchasing a home but does not give neighborhood specifics • She questions the authenticity of neighborhood review sites commentors • Frustrated that most sites lean towards the parents demographics with an emphasis on school ratings

USER PERSONAS

Ideal Location: • Keeping options open so any coast/region does not matter as long as it’s affordable. • Close to parks, grocery stores, and entertainment venues • Friendly neighborhood with residents close in age

Goals: • Compare locations and save her research to reference for a latter time • Make friends
