01 - INTERNSHIP AT WINGĂ…RDHS

WORKING AS AN INTERN To be apart of a tem of architects working on real projects is the best experience so far. Meeting challenges hard to simulate in University. Also for the first time really understand what all the time preparing in University means for our process, simply put working more efficiently. The team at WingĂĽrdhs are an inspiring team of young but experienced architects and engineers solving the challenges of modern architecture. Learning about regulations, economics, industry and society in general. If I thought architects played an important role in society before I have witnessed the need of good architects in our daily context.

02 - KÖHLER ARKITEKTUR AB

STARTING A COMPANY Since I signed my registration papers for the company “Köhler Arkitektur AB” I have been scouting for projects. Sending emails to people I´ve never met desperately looking for clients. One day I heard from a friend of a friend looking for an architect to plan an extension of his summerhouse by the sea in one of southern Swedens most beautiful places, Beddingestrand. I was eager to help him out. After completeing my first drawings and getting the project approved by the planning office another project appeared. A project involving an old desserted house getting demolished to make space for a new one.

www.kohlerarkitektur.se

Hopefully I can manage to keep clients happy and furthermore plan more houses.

PLANNING MY FIRST HOUSE My first project, almost a pilot, was to help a family fulfill their dream of a larger summerhouse in Beddingestrand, Sweden. This family, just like other modern family situation, involved two new kids and a summerhouse lacking both social spaces, storage spaces and two bedrooms. The extension is planned like a T, working with both the front and the back of the old house. Towards the sea the new volume makes space for a large terrace while making space for a more obvious entrance in the back. The extension creates a visibility axis between both of the volumes, making the building more open and connects to it´s surrounding nature.

WORKING WITH VARIANCE To create a new volume communicating with the old one without separating too much from it too much was my main goal. The pitched roof and wood cladding was something I took with me from the existing volume and developed further in the new, making the extension act a new layer of time. The two volumes are separated by a glass slit making both light and surroundings appear. Simply making the border between inside and outside fade away. Today Villa Karlsson is getting built and the foundation is alrady layed. It´s interesting and very educational to make drawings appear in scale, answer the challenges with an open mind.

04 - VILLA DAHLBERG YEAR PLANNED .................................... 2017 TYPE OF PROJECT ............................... Private TYPEOLOGY ....................................... Residence LOCATION .................. Beddingestrand, Sweden

SECOND IS THE CHARM After planning Villa Karlsson I got in touch with another client in Beddingestrand. This Client was planning a house for him and his wife at a site which he inherited as a youth. The existing building was abandonnend and full of mold. The Dahlberg family is looking for a house with all necessities needed to create a home for them during both summers and winter getaways. The main building is 120 squaremeters big and is planned with big social spaces but also a section for privacy. It´s complemented with a garage and sauna but also an orangery with afternoon sun light.

TAKING NATURE INSIDE This plot is surrounded by large trees and has a very intimate character. It was natural to work with a vertical direction in the wooden cladding to communicate with the tree trumks. The building is planned so that it in the future also can be used by the Dahlberg couple easliy even if they get older. That´s one of the reason to why it consists only of one level. The border between inside and outside is faded here as well. Making the surrounding trees apart of the furniture.

05 - THE CREMATORY YEAR PLANNED .................................... 2017 TYPE OF PROJECT ......................... University TYPEOLOGY ................................... Crematory LOCATION ........ Limhamns Kalkbrott, Sweden GROUP ............. Viktor Borg & Anton Kรถhler

DESIGNING FOR GRIEF The designprocess of a crematory became an interesting challenge. Understanding grief and routines regarding the process of death made me realise that there is a large paradox in a project like this. At one hand we are designing a crematory almost comparable with any sort of industry, demanding an order and a positive working environment for the staff. On the other side of the paradox we have to design emotional spaces for people in grieve, spaces which brings calm but in the same time show care.

05 - THE CREMATORY

WORKING WITH LANDSCAPE The site of the program is situated in the

southwestern part of Malmö. “Limhamns

Kalkbrott” is an old limestone quarry with a history beginning in the 19th century as the

industry in Malmö was developed. Malmö is a city which grew stronger as an industrial hub

in the southern part of Sweden. Today Malmö

is branding itself as a city of knowledge, rather than industry. Our site in the quarry has also gone through transformations, just like it´s

surrounding society. We had an initial idea to work with the landscape in full respect of it´s

character, we wanted to enhance the character of the site for visitors. This idea followed us throughout the whole design process.

05 - THE CREMATORY

SITE STRATEGY Working with a concept of making the land-

scape accessible with our building gave us the

chance to work with the emotional path all the

way through the building down into the landscape. A landscape which we use as a colum-

barium. Whilst working out our design concept of dissolved rooms we pictured the mourners

journey through the building. In this journey it was important for us to work with certain

effects to make this building almost sacred in it´s design. We worked with the form concepts based on the journey for the mourners.Frame land-

scape with continous walls, frame selected parts

of nature with paths and frame light with high windows. All of these create the rules that we play with in the structure.

05 - THE CREMATORY

THE PASSAGE The journey was something we worked hard to capture. Initially we discussed and sketched on

what feeling we wanted each room to represent. The overall concept of rooms fading into each other was something we could work with to

enhance different characters based on our form concept. The passage hall is a corridor creating

open rooms where light guides you towards the

ceremonial hall. Passages are rooms which normally just takes the visitors from A to B, this

corridor is different. Light and materiality is

supposed to represent carefulness towards both the context but also the feeling of grief. The

landscape is something that gets revieled step by step as the visitors walk through in their chosen pace.

05 - THE CREMATORY

THE FOYER As the final room before the path leads out into the landscape the ceremonial foyer is the room that connects both emotional and functional

spaces. After cremation and preparation of the urns this is where dependants get the ashes

delivered before the burial can take place in the columbarium. This foyer is also working as a

waiting room for people waiting to take apart in the ceremony in either the large ceremonial hall or the smaller ceremonial hall. Walking towards the ceremonial foyer the high brick

wall guides visitors as it is lit up by indirect

light from above. When the passage is dissolved the landscape unveils through large windows towards the columbarium.

05 - THE CREMATORY

THE CREMATION Emotional and functional spaces are separated but it´s important that none of them compro-

mise each other in terms of qualities as light and carefulness in materials. The decision of sepa-

rating functions is based on a program of which rooms needed to do what. By sanitary reasons,

due to technical equipment and waste but most importantly access with a herse the functional

spaces are along the back of the building. These

spaces have specific needs, such as turning radius for forklifts but also needs like cold storage for coffins. Cremation is the key moment of the

functions in this building and something that shouldn’t be done in a dark cellar. This room

shows the curved roof from the interior spaces

and how light and nature gets framed with the

help of high windows. Light and materiality of

brick, stainless steel, polished terazzo and bright plywood, is important in this space. It shows

how we pictured the functional spaces equally enjoyable as the emotional spaces. In the end

of the day the staff our the people spending the most time here.

CONCEPT & BRIEF Altona 9 is a project from a course called

“Sustainable design”. The brief was to create an office in central Lund with a strong sustainability horizon.

Today the plot is an abandoned parking area in a dense and beatifully planned block. We

wwnated this new office to communicate with

the surroundings through materiality but show how good sustainable design can look.

The concept is arranged from a large analysis

of context. We wanted to work with the court-

yards that each building in the block presented. The vision is a type of reinkarnation of the courtyard in smaller scale.

FUNCTIONS OF SPACES Sustainable urban design is not just about

environmentally friendly materials and methods but also about economy and social aspects. We worked hard with the social aspects to

develope something we believe is the future of

workspaces. A flexible office able to change and integrate in the context of the city.

The functions naturally engaged around the

courtyard as the source of light. In the darker part of the building the shaft and technical rooms were placed.

Plan 2 and 3 became the heart of the building

with offices, meeting rooms and social spaces. In the top of the building you find the rooms for

representation such as events but also being able to use as an office.

THE ATRIUM The courtyard becomes the heart of the building.

The heart which both acts as a peaceful place but also the source of light in Altona 9.

The courtyard is a tribute to the context. The

intimate character of the surrounding buildings depend on the variety in scale, soething we wanted our volume to embrace.

The courtyards in the surroundings at Stora

GrĂĽbrĂśdersgatan can not be seen from the street

but gets highlighted when you make an entry in one of the buildings.

06 - ALTONA 9

RICHNESS IN DETAIL The project has been formed around the context. At the same time the sustainability has been

a mayor focus. Our goal is a flexible building with spaces adabtable to future changes in occupations.

The buildings body is made out of wood and

cladded with brick. It was a key feature that the building should be able to get removed from the site easily, making the smallest ecological footprint as possible.

The walls have later got insulated with a cir-

cular cradle to cradle mindset. Materials have been chosen because of their environmental thinking. Se the detail on the right

THE MIXED CITY Planning a block was something new and ex-

iting for us. Thinking in a larger scale and not going in too much on the details was challenging.

Our own ideas about the city and how we used

it was part of the process. We wanted to build a

block that enhances the mix of usage in the city. How can one simply create integration? I believe throug a mix in usage between housing, Site plan

culture and activity. Making our site accessible and used a lot of the hours during the day to

enhance the feeling of a safe place to live, work and socialise. The place should represent a balance between peolp with different presumptions. 40

LAYERS OF TIME Sveaborg is an Island with a strong historical character in Finland. With a 15 minute boat

ride from central Helsinki you can experience this peaceful and natural island.

The breif was to plan for housing on the island and we pictured a new approach of

sustainability and inspiring people to move out of the city.

The architecture of the place is dominated by

stone, Granite to be more exact. The old walls are layed stone by stone. These walls was one

of our main inspiration and connection to the

surrroundings. We planned housing on the concept of gabion boxes with granite.

of the site. Mainly through the use of granite

and the roof being formed so the meadow of the surroundings can climb up.

The relationship with the sea is obvious in each

apartment. The apartments consist of sex apartments in two different sizes, 65 and 90 square

meters. The border between inside and outside is faded and nature reclaims the site through the meadow.

With a strong connection to the sea we hhave planned form a sailing club and a terrace for

sunbathing and swimming. This makes the site attractive for guests

BUILDING MODULES Skåne has a wondeful countryside and nature.

In this project we aimed to find a way for peo-

ple to addd a new dimension to their experience in nature.

Skåneleden is a walking path that guides

tourists and enthusiasts around Skåne. The

thougnt behind Skåneleden 2.0 was to give

shelter to these visitors and further develope the marketing of Skåne.

The shelter is sold as a module in pieces and gets transported out into the wild. Here you can

assemble it easily and adapt it to the nature below.

TRANSPARENCY AND LIGHT To get that extra dimension while visiting

nature we aimed for a transparency without compromising the feeling of safety.

The wooden structure is clad with polycarbonate sheets that sprad the light from soures inside the structure. This makes other visitors aware of the shelters being occupied or not.

The project is completely based on model making in scale 1:10 to se challenges and making the dimensions realistic.

EXPERIMENTING One of my favourit projects in Lund has been

to experiment with small buildings. We had an assignment to work with a plot in the size of 3x6 meters.

I have always found both theory and practise

very intresting and therefor I took the chance to apply a theory of a Swedish architect called Ola

Nylander. His theories are about what gives the user of spaces an extra sense of atmosphere.

I tried to work with his theories of axiality,

circulation and daylight but in a vertical way. I learned a lot about how to plan for the waste of space being at a minimum.

BUILDING TO SCALE My first encounter with Lund University was

through our first project in 2015. The brief was to get inspired by a Rebel and design a piece of furniture linked to this Rebel.

I choose to design a tribute to one of the strongest and most inspiring women of the world, Rosa Parks.

Modelmaking has always been one of my

largest passions and I took the chance to build a bench based on the seat of the bus that Rosa Parks claimed. The seat that everyone had a right to sit on.

3D MODELLING Modern architecture requires a lot of use of computers and 3D-modelling.

In Lund we have had unique opportunities to

take time and actually learn the programs from skratch. This is something that has helped me a lot in my use of 3D-tools and digital fabrication.

My Bachelor’s project was made in a studio

with a focus on computerized modern design with the use of both grasshopper and Rhino.

STUDY TRIPS Studying arcchitecture involves a lot of

viewing at precedents and taking inspiration

from around the world. The benefits from study trips are extremely important in my design process.

Seeing new places, cultures and buildings is very enlightning.

The art of photography is aslo something I love

and try to get better at. Every architect needs to know a bit about how to find the right angles

and therefor the art of photography helsps a lot in our design work.

Good documentation also makes portfolios easier to understand.
