Strings and knots problems Knots and strings were not only essential to sailors and pirates, but are still used in many industrial, occupational, recreational, and domestic settings!

Knot theory is also a branch of topology, and deals with the mathematical analysis of their structure and properties. Topological problems involving strings and knots may enhance your spatial reasoning and your sense of observation. In fact, the aim of this line of puzzles is to visually check every entangled ring of string (called ‘closed curve’ in mathematics) to find if it is linked/unlinked or even knotted/unknotted. The examples below demonstrate that it just is not so simple as it first appears!

This is a trivial ‘ring of string’

An unknotted ring of string (A)... and a knotted one (B) A.

B.

Two unlinked rings of string (C)... and two linked ones (D)

C.

Difficulty levels: from easy
