Sternberg, MD named new Chair of the Department of Medicine at MRMC

Milford regional’s Chief of Neurology Eliezer Sternberg, MD, has been named the hospital’s new Chair of the Department of Medicine. The Department of Medicine encompasses the divisions of hospital medicine, neurology, cardiology, pulmonology and gastrointestinal, among other specialties.

Michael C. Newstein, MD, PhD, who served as the Department of Medicine Chair for 12 years.

Sternberg joined Milford regional as a neurologist in 2020 and was named chief of the division the following year. In his new chairmanship role, he will support physician recruitment, structuring clinical services, overseeing department meetings and enhancing collaborations among clinicians in the hospital.

University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut, where he served as chief resident and was named resident of the Year. He fulfilled two fellowships at Mass. General Hospital; one in clinical neurophysiology and a second in epilepsy. At Milford regional, he grew the division of Neurology into a robust inpatient and outpatient service and established several new hospital programs such as the code stroke process and the long-term monitoring electroencephalography (EEG) system.

Sternberg holds other leadership positions within Milford regional, including cochair of the Stroke Committee and director of the neurodiagnostic laboratory. In addition to his clinical achievements, he is the author of several books on neurology, translated into six languages, and has written research articles, book chapters and popular articles featured in The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and Discover magazine. He is also a member of several professional affiliations including the American Academy of Neurology, American Epilepsy Society, American Medical Association and Massachusetts Medical Society.
