Set in the heart of elegant 1920’s Home-Smith Tudor and Georgian mansions on Toronto’s leafy Kingsway, the new residence at 43 Kingsway Crescent was designed for a young active family who entertain and appreciate art. These homeowners were attracted by the street façade’s design of impressive towers, dormers, steep roof, chimneys, stone detailing and rich architectural details.

However at the first meeting with

Peter Marzynski they revealed that they wanted to be taken out of their comfort zone. And so stepping to the rear of the property, a stunning ‘architectural sleight of hand’ takes place. As Peter says, “We wanted to open the house out.”

Choosing the finest aesthetics for the project, the clients accepted that the design would create harmony between the two iterations. The new house was designed to seamlessly fit into the traditional Kingsway neighborhood, while, privately, the rear of the house faces a ravine of oaks and maples with stunning views of the Humber River.

The Interior and exterior are luminously interconnected. As Peter says “Light brings joy and is a key component of good interiors.”

The house has large doors and windows, a second floor terrace and multi-level patio stepping down to a swimming pool. The exquisitely proportioned windows and glazed terrace doors bring sunshine to the spacious interior.

Noble limestone clads the exterior walls: its’ usage cleverly understated to avoid competing with the detailing around the front entrance and dormers. The black slate roof links to careful treatment of the zinc eaves and downspouts that give definition to the tall dormers.

The interior of the house with its’ Beaux Arts detailing is both impressive and highly functional. In all it is a masterful creation and gives to the proud home owners the best of both worlds.

Architecture is in Peter Marzynski’s blood. His father Stanislaw was one of the most respected architects in Poland. He followed in his father’s footsteps, first practising architecture in Europe. Since its’ founding in 1985, PhD Design has undertaken the design of some 600 projects in highly prestigious areas of Toronto and surrounding areas.

From Tudor through Georgian, Victorian and Craftsman styles, Peter is also highly adept at cutting-edge Modernist structures. He remarks: “My design philosophy seeks a harmonious balance while striving to be functional. Awareness of the environment and local culture are front of mind as I build to ensure a long-term investment for my clients.”

Project Lifesaver is a 501 (C) (3) community based, public safety, non-profit organization that provides law enforcement, fire/rescue and other first responders with a comprehensive program for the search and rescue of individuals with cognitive dis including those with Alzheimer’s disease and Autism.

I established Project Lifesaver International in 1999 when it became apparent that there was a void that needed to be filled in providing search, rescue and protection for “At Risk” individuals who are prone to the life-threatening behavior of wandering.

Project Lifesaver was the first organization to apply tracking technology for the search and rescue of individuals with cognitive disorders and have remained the leader, the Gold Standard, in this field for over two decades. Because of our extensive experience in search and rescue of wanderers, Project Lifesaver has provided valuable insight and information in the development of policy and sound practices for search, rescue, and safe recovery of at-risk wanders. We help in the development of materials and training programs to provide the necessary education of doctors, caregivers, school administrators, first responders/search personnel, and of course, the families with loved ones at risk. In fact, Project Lifesaver is a subject matter expert and advisor on the wandering issue for: Leaders Engaged on Alzheimer’s disease (LEAD), National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), Alzheimer’s Foundation, and the National Alzheimer’s Project Act (NAPA). The Project Lifesaver’s training program is recognized and approved by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and National Preparedness Institute of Indian River State College. What has made our approach unique is that we have created an entire education and training program that includes tracking techniques and technology, partnering with the local first responders, educating those public safety agencies on the latest health information related to the disorders they will be working with, and training those first responders to approach the “at risk” individual, gain their trust and put them at ease for their trip home once they have been located. Project Lifesaver program is more than just the latest and most effective protect and locate technology. The Project Lifesaver program also provides first responders with an understanding of the symptoms and behaviors of the individuals that they are recovering; they know how to approach the individual, gain their trust and put them at ease for the trip home. Project Lifesaver trained certified and equipped first responders have the tools and training to assess and effectively manage the safe and comfortable return of the “At Risk” individual.

Project Lifesaver trained emergency response teams have rescued nearly 4000 at risk individuals (and this number is growing with each passing day). The program is now in nearly 1,700 agencies covering all 50 states and throughout all the Canadian Provinces.

Given the weather in Galveston County, it is possible to swim for 10 months out of the year. Very mild winters are great for a pool business! One challenge that arises is the available space within the yard. Utility easements have been increased due to recent floods. Many cities now have storm pollution regulations that have caused the increase in easements, limiting the availability of space for pools and standing structures.
