Animal Charity of the Year 2023 - Paws2Rescue - UK

Paws2Rescue is a UK- registered charity, and every member of our 43-strong team is a volunteer dedicated to relieving the suffering of animals across the world.

Why Do We Do it? Nine o’clock in the morning and it was already -20C as we drove to the public shelter in a town in rural Romania. At least we knew that the 800 strays and abandoned pets caged in the most appalling conditions there would eat well today, thanks to the bags of food we had stashed in the boot. Our hearts broke as we passed dogs pitifully curled up against the biting wind; half-hidden inside holes they had dug in the snow just to survive. That's when we saw Ivy slowly walking along, silent in her pain, too cold to show fear when we approached. She was heavier than she looked, weighed down by heavy clumps of matted fur and her paws, frozen solid, made us cry. This is the everyday reality in Romania and Moldova where the lack of neutering has led to a huge stray population; where starving dogs scavenge before being cruelly rounded up by dog-catchers and taken to “shelters'' to be killed. Yet Ivy, and thousands like her, are now warm and fed because we refuse to drive by. For dogs like her, adopted into UK families, the days of frozen paws and empty bellies are over. Thousands, almost millions of pups have not been born into misery because we carry out neutering. Because we care. Our love for dogs does not recognise borders, and we cannot stand to see any dog in distress.

What do we do? Providing neutering services is at the heart of our mission as work towards our ultimate goal of ensuring every dog is a wanted dog. Currently, we neuter extensively in Ukraine, Peru, Columbia, and particularly the communities of rural Romania and we are grateful for the support of Battersea Dog’s Home in this. Each year, our vet scholarships enable young people to train in Veterinary Medicine at college or university in Romania. These student vets participate in neuter campaigns, in global research projects and will soon be staffing our new

Medical Center for Education and Animal Services in the south of the country. This unique project is the first of its kind in Romania where as well as providing medical care, we will expand the education programme we have already rolled out across seven counties in Romania. Additionally, our commitment to helping individual dogs in danger means that we are constantly facilitating the rescue of abused and injured dogs. Collectively, our rescuers have up to 3,000 animals in their care at any one time and we support them by fundraising to cover the cost of vet treatment, food, bedding and shelter. We also run an adoption scheme, enabling a number of animals to find a loving family in the UK. Sadly, some of our dogs are just too traumatised to be rehomed, and we provide a secure and comfortable environment for these animals through our Sponsor a Dog scheme and our new Sanctuary.

Every member of our team has a particular remit, from arranging home-checks to organising fundraising events and updating our social media channels. Our main efforts are focused on funding our projects, those areas where our input is most desperately needed and devise projects to meet those needs. Prepare for Winter is an annual campaign that starts in the summer. Donations raised are specifically held until the winter, when temperatures in Romania can drop below -25C and the snow drifts up to 8 feet or more. Every year, we are able to help up to fifty small rescuers and individuals who cry out for help for shelter, straw and food. This campaign is a real lifesaver for dogs, as our new Sanctuary will be. Working to architects’ plans, the build is of high quality, and of course, the costs are equally high and we are reliant on donations for each step of the project.

We are passionate about what we do, but we can’t do it alone. We rely on the kindness of supporters who are equally committed to alleviating suffering and who believe in our mission: ensuring every animal is a wanted animal.

The one person, to whom I ultimately owe my success is my Mother, giving me the foundations I needed to reach for the top. Teaching me the importance of self-reflection and allowing me to find the confidence and comfort in expressing myself, an invaluable lesson to learn.

My friend Anuradha, an accomplished public speaker inspired me and taught me that as women we have an important choice to find environments and people that will support us in our careers, something we all need in our life.

I had to learn to truly believe in myself, once you find that inner strength you can influence and promote change. But above it all you don’t have to always fail to win, it is not a zero-sum game, this has stuck with me throughout my career. Forever aspiring to be a proponent of investing in others and helping lift them up, showing them, they too can get ahead without having to do it at the expense of someone else, we are all in this together.

One word of advice, is move forward, move with conviction and believe in yourself, don’t underestimate who you are, we can all achieve greatness if we just believe.
