Norfolk’s most distinctive stone... An expert guide to the advantages of using Frimstone’s high quality carrstone aggregate ou can’t get much more local than carrstone; it’s the local name for the distinctive reddish-brown ‘iron stone’ most famously seen in the colourfully layered cliffs of Hunstanton. This sedimentary sandstone has been quarried locally since Roman times (when it was used for smelting iron) and FRIMSTONE operates the main carrstone quarry at Snettisham to this day. As an attractive building stone, carrstone can be seen throughout northwest Norfolk, from Sandringham House and St. Edmunds church in Downham Market (pictured above) to the picturesque cottages of villages such as Wolferton and Heacham. In addition to supplying block carrstone to

local craftsmen producing facing stones for renovation work, FRIMSTONE also crushes and screens carrstone to produce a high quality and versatile ‘clean’ or ‘down’ construction aggregate. While the ‘clean’ material is a good bulk fill material strong enough to keep footings open (with water draining into the voids), the ‘down’ carrstone compacts extremely well and is ideal for providing a sound foundation or base layer for a floor or path. If you’re looking for a cost-effective, high performing and very local material for your next project, contact FRIMSTONE today for more information and all the help and advice you need –from choosing the right aggregate to ordering the correct amount.

GOOD FOR... Carrstone is great for decorative brickwork, rockeries, walls and horse field gateways. It’s also an excellent value-formoney bulk fill material; it’s been used for the construction of the new Redgate Roundabout on the Hunstanton/Heacham road. ADVANTAGES... In addition to its historic value (its local use is often a planning requirement), carrstone is a cost-effective and attractive building material. Its local origins means that FRIMSTONE's carrstone is always readily available. DISADVANTAGES... Although carrstone can be used in much the same way as any other building stone, it does have the disadvantage of friability and is more difficult to cut by hand. It’s also unsuited for use around water, as the high level of oxides in the stone can change the water’s pH level. TOP TIP... To maximise the effectiveness of ‘down’ carrstone aggregate, FRIMSTONE recommendeds the use of a wacker plate or a Bomag roller to compact it properly. AVAILABILITY... Rockery stones, facing stones and graded 125mm, 75mm and 50mm carrstone aggregate is available from all FRIMSTONE centres. A handy aggregate calculator is available on the FRIMSTONE website, and our dedicated customer services team can give you all the help and advice you need on 01366 388900.
