It’s a family affair
In the lush Northern Suburbs of Cape Town, a remarkable family heritage thrives. Meet the De Villiers family of Klein Roosboom, 11th and 12th generation descendants of the French Huguenots who arrived in the Cape of Good Hope in 1689.
A timeless legacy of passion and dedication.
Their unwavering commitment to this region and their passion for change, community, and excellence has propelled the De Villiers family to the forefront of the luxury wine industry.
A heritage rooted in rich soil The De Villiers family traces their lineage back to Pierre de Villiers from La Rochelle, France. Through generations, they have nurtured their legacy in Bourgogne, Franschhoek, Picardie, and Laborie in Paarl, eventually settling in Doordekraal. Today, their vineyards flourish on the fertile grounds of Klein Roosboom, a testament to their deep connection to the land.
A journey fuelled by love and expertise Jéan and Karin, owners of Klein Roosboom, embarked on their winemaking adventure in 1984/5. Inspired by Jéan’s tireless work as a grape supplier to renowned brands, Karin pursued her dream of crafting exceptional champagne (MCC) and still wines. With her weekend winemaking course at Stellenbosch University and a pilgrimage to the family’s French roots, Karin’s dedication and expertise have yielded remarkable creations.
A family united in legacy Tragedy struck in 2017 when Jéan passed away, leaving behind a profound legacy and a family committed to honouring his memory. Nicol, the eldest son, joined the family business as the viticulturist. Johan Roual, the youngest son, returned after gaining valuable insights outside the family domain to oversee operations and financial matters. Marné, the only daughter, joined after a transformative journey abroad, becoming the Brand Manager and embracing her parents’ footsteps.

Nestled in the heart of the Durbanville Wine Valley, just 20km from Cape Town, 300 year-old Klein Roosboom offers the most unique wine tasting experience that Cape Town has to offer.
Honouring the Heart of Our Family
From daybreak to sunset our Mother watched as our Father tended his beloved vines. He lived and breathed his love and lifelong commitment to his vineyards. She decided that passion of this extent (along with her dream to make her own Cap Classique) simply had to be bottled.
She attended a weekend course in winemaking at Stellenbosch University and this ignited a hobby which in turn became a cellar, a tasting experience, a restaurant and a huge demand for our product – one with a personal approach and touch.
Klein Roosboom’s Estate Range is a heartfelt tribute to family, with each wine dedicated to a beloved family member. The back label of each bottle features a unique, hand-written letter that draws a personal comparison between the wine’s characteristics and the personality of the individual it honours. Every wine in this range reflects the
essence of a family member, capturing their traits in every sip. These wines offer not only a taste of our terroir but also a glimpse into the spirit and stories of those who inspire us.

Experience the art of innovation.
Our Limited Release wines embody a spirit of experimentation and creativity, allowing our winemaker the freedom to explore and innovate. These “barefoot wines” are crafted with minimal intervention, pushing the boundaries of traditional winemaking techniques.
We experiment with various types of wood, ageing periods, and yeast strains, alongside natural fermentation processes and extended time on the lees.
Each wine reflects the unique characteristics derived from different fermentation vessels and methods, creating a diverse and intriguing range that showcases the winemaker’s artistry and passion.
