Focus Your Passion
The Program Orchestral Study
T
he SSMF maintains two full student orchestras. Each rehearses daily and performs a program of challenging repertoire every week. The Festival Orchestra, comprised of faculty and select students, performs special concerts. The Sewanee Symphony, led each week by a renowned guest conductor, gives our most advanced students an introduction to the real world of orchestra life. Major works are selected to emphasize repertoire important to the young professional. The Cumberland Orchestra, led by Resident Conductor Octavio MรกsArocas, provides training in important orchestral skills while introducing exciting repertoire, from standard to contemporary. Chamber Music Study
All students participate in a chamber ensemble every week, receiving daily coaching from a faculty member. All groups perform weekly, and many ensembles are chosen for a variety of public chamber music concerts each week. Private Study
A
ll students receive a weekly private lesson with one of our artist-faculty. Our faculty work closely with their studios, providing personal attention and support to each student. Master classes are a frequent occurrence. Special Classes
Seminars and extra classes are presented during the Festival and cover a wide range of topics. Classes for 2013 will include some of the following, as
well as others based on student interest and faculty expertise: Conducting, Health and Wellness for Musicians, Composition, Music Theory, Audition Preparation, Practice Tools and Techniques, Career Management. Advanced Chamber Ensemble Fellowship Program
Students currently in a string quartet, piano quartet, wind or brass quintet are invited to apply to Sewanee as an ensemble. Scholarship award: $2,000 per student Piano Program
T
he SSMF Piano Program emphasizes collaborative piano and is designed for advance high school and college students. Piano students receive twice weekly lessons and daily piano repertoire/studio classes. Pianists spend significant time working in chamber ensembles, with frequent performing opportunities. Some perform piano parts with the orchestras. The piano program is highly individualized with a high level of personal attention for each student. 2013 Jacqueline Avent Concerto Competition
All students are invited to enter the Concerto Competition, held in the first week of the Festival. Competition winners are featured with the Festival Orchestra during the final week and are eligible for the Jacqueline Avent Music Scholarship awards for the following summer. A maximum of four credit hours may be earned through the University of the South in orchestra, chamber music, and applied music. www.sewaneemusicfestival.orG
Student Services Facilities
C
lassrooms, rehearsal rooms, and teaching studios are centrally located in buildings on the campus of the University of the South. Most concerts are held in the 1,000-seat auditorium at Guerry Hall. Outdoor concerts are held in a charming courtyard known as Guerry Garth. The annual Brass Concert and large choral-orchestral works are presented in All Saints’ Chapel, an imposing neo-Gothic space with cathedral acoustics. St. Luke’s Chapel, our 125-seat recital hall, is an ideal venue for master classes and small recital performances. Housing, Meals, and Health Service
Students are housed in university dormitories, arranged by age and gender, with close supervision by qualified adults assisted by college student proctors. Meals are served three times daily in the University’s splendid facility, McClurg Dining Hall. University Health Services, along with Emerald-Hodgson Hospital, on campus, provide needed health care. All students must be covered by health insurance. Recreation

everal special recreational outings are arranged each summer and include hiking, swimming, and caving. The Fowler Sports and Fitness center is a state-of-the-art athletic facility that houses basketball and volleyball courts, swimming pool, weight room; and handball, racquetball, and squash courts. Outdoor facilities include an all-weather track, 10 tennis courts, golf course, an equestrian center, and several fields for recreational sports.

Admission and Student Information Admission
S
tudents are selected for admission on the basis of background and performance ability. The minimum age is 12 years old with no strict maximum age limit, only the requirement that the student currently be a full-time student. Admission in each instrument is limited to those needed for the two orchestras. Anyone wishing to apply after the deadline should contact the SSMF office for information on place availability in their instrument. Financial Aid and Scholarships
All students wishing to be considered for assistance must submit a completed Financial Aid Application at the same time as their Admission Application. Awards are based on ability, financial need, and SSMF programmatic needs. Students are also encouraged to explore funding sources in their own communities. School music organizations, music education organizations, youth orchestras, service clubs (Rotary, Chambers of Commerce, etc), churches, businesses, and foundations have all assisted our students in past years.

ll Alumni and Pre-Accepted Students are exempt from submitting a musical audition file and recommendation letters: just record yourself saying your name, instrument, and what you love most about the SSMF and attach the file where the audition file goes. Application Deadline: March 15, 2013 ($60 fee) Early Application Deadline: February 1, 2013 ($15 fee)
Applicants will be notified of admission decisions within three weeks of receipt of all required materials. Live Auditions
Live auditions will be held in Sewanee on Saturday, March 2, 2013. Live auditions in other locations may be held by special arrangement. Fees

• $250 deposit (non-refundable), due within two weeks of acceptance • Balance of tuition due by May 15 Students withdrawing from the Festival after May 16, but before June 1, 2013, will receive a refund of 50% of the total paid fee. No refunds will be made after June 1, 2013.

Sewanee Choral Institute New for 2013!! June 22–July 6 The two-week Sewanee Choral Institute is open to high school vocalists, ages 14–18.
T
he SSMF Choral Institute is a two-week intensive for young singers looking to develop their potential in a close community of peers and faculty artists, with frequent opportunities to perform in a breathtakingly beautiful setting. As members of the SSMF, Choral Institute participants enjoy a full spectrum of concerts, special artists, and seminars offered to instrumentalists. Each day will include classes in music theory, literacy, and vocal health and technique as well as sectional and full rehearsals for the full choir and smaller ensembles. Individual voice lessons will be available for an additional fee. The repertory for the institute will be of the highest caliber include major works such as Vivaldi’s Gloria; Mozart’s Missa brevis in C Major, K220; madrigals, chansons, Renaissance and Baroque motets; and Romantic part-songs. Tuition – $1,250 Room and board – $700 A small number of partial scholarships are available, based on demonstrated ability and financial need.
